Deconstructed: The War Over Ukrainian History and Identity- podcast

“Ukraine is not just a neighboring country for us,” declared Russian President Vladimir Putin last week. “It is an inalienable part of our own history, culture, and spiritual space.” This conception of Ukrainian history forms the bedrock of Putin’s justification for invading the former Soviet republic, independent since 1991. On this week’s podcast, Ryan Grim talks with Ukrainian sociologist Volodymyr Ishchenko about his country’s history, from the Dark Ages up the current war. They discuss Ukraine’s history of anarchist politics, the 2014 Euromaidan Revolution that toppled pro-Moscow President Viktor Yanukovych, and the tangled question of modern Ukrainian identity.

Tucker Carlson Has a Hard Time Dealing with the Fact That His Second-favorite Dictator Is a Monster | The Smirking Chimp

“When you deal with such a dishonest propagandist—and that is what he is—there’s nothing you can take out of context, because none of it is real,” Stewart said. “He’s admitted when he’s cornered, he lies. It’s all a game and a performance. I mean, honestly, I have no idea what the fuck that guy believes, truly.” That goes for the whole network and its chairman Rupert Murdoch, who Stewart says is “trying to destroy the fabric of this country.” “I don’t know if it’s ideological or he just thinks, this is where the money is.

But how somebody can in good conscience put a shithead like that on television every night to say those types of things, that’s where the responsibility lies in my mind,” Stewart said. And now, for your edification, here’s Stewart telling Carlson who he was 18 years ago. The pinhead has only gotten worse since.

Major News Outlets Suspend Operations In Russia Following Anti-Journalist Law | HuffPost Latest News

Once a KGB thug always one, but one isolated, and on steroids who needs treatment not compromise. Poisonings, assassinations, incarcerations will continue if nothing is done. 40 million people could find themselves in a Russian version of Nth Korea or East Germany along with the already 144M Russians already living that experience. Putin is unable to trust anyone so he’s got his finger on the nuclear red button. Who in Russia will do away with him, save the Russian people and the wider universe?

Major international news outlets including the BBC, CNN and Bloomberg will suspend operations in Russia in response to a new law criminalizing news reports that contradict the Kremlin’s version of the war in Ukraine. On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a bill into law that criminalizes spreading what the government deems to be fake news, The Associated Press reported. Under the new measure, a statement as simple as referring to Putin’s invasion of Ukraine as a “war” rather than a “special military operation” could constitute criminal disinformation, according to The New York Times. Punishment could include fines or up to three years’ imprisonment, with 15 years possible if authorities decide a report had “severe consequences.” International news organizations that have announced they would be temporarily suspending operations in Russia include:

“If I do this, what do I have to lose?”: New documents show Trump feared no consequences for a coup | Salon.com

The Trump Principle ” Can I get away with it and at what cost ? ” Just think Atlantic City!!

There is one simple reason why Donald Trump orchestrated his coup — one which led to a violent insurrection on January 6, 2021: He didn’t think he’d ever face consequences for doing so. A document filed by the January 6 committee with a California federal court on Wednesday confirmed it. The document is filed on a narrow question about obtaining documents from likely Trump co-conspirator John Eastman, who is claiming attorney-client privilege. But that privilege doesn’t give lawyers the right to conspire to commit crimes with their clients, which is exactly what the committee alleges Eastman and Trump were doing. “The Select Committee also has a good-faith basis for concluding that the President and members of his Campaign engaged in a criminal conspiracy to defraud the United States.”

Strangely, Mr Frydenberg’s broken promise wasn’t the front page of “The Herald-Sun” in Melbourne today. No, there was a much bigger one. The Independent challenging him for the seat has a secret. She doesn’t like the government and, even worse, she once declared her love for some Labor politicians on Facebook. Now, given that it came out that she was once a member of the Labor Party a few months ago, I wouldn’t have considered this front page news, but I guess that’s why I’m not likely to ever be asked to edit any of the Murdoch propaganda sheets.

I would have presumed that the announcement that Josh doesn’t intend to demonstrate his commitment to recycling by using the same car park policy that he took to the previous election would be an indication that he feels completely safe. However, when the papers feel the need to do a hit job on his opponent and not some Labor person in a marginal electorate, the polling must be closer than I thought.

Ok, well, it’s only a matter of weeks before Morrison has to either call the election or else we’ll all know that it’s on May 21st. Unless he really is intending to have a half-Senate election and hold off the House of Representatives so long that all the newspapers running Clive Palmer’s ads become viable businesses again.

The demand for verifiable facts according to Kelly is a restriction on free speech. His freedom is to say anything he wants true, false or even insane is an individual’s right because Facebook has banned him but not the UAP. A vote for the UAP is a vote for the LNP and a vote for the LNP is a vote for the new coalition of the L-NP-UAP and there isn’t any love between them.

Although Kelly is banned from the platform, his party is not, and according to Facebook’s transparency report, the United Australia party has spent over $513,000 on ads in the last 90 days alone on Facebook – the largest political ad spend in Australia on the platform. Party founder Clive Palmer has separately spent over $161,000 in the same period. The Liberal party spent over $44,000 in the same period.

Guns still point to China: Ukraine a backdrop for national security panic merchants – Michael West Media

The Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) is busy not so much with a conflict on the other side of the globe but finding a way to spin the misery of the people of Ukraine into anti-China propaganda. It’s just the kind of propaganda Scott Morrison wants, and the prime minister clearly thinks he needs, in the run up to a likely May federal election. For years ASPI has suckled at the teat of the weapons industry; but far and away the most generous of ASPI’s benefactors is the Morrison government.

Stand with Ukraine march in Hamburg

Young climate campaigners with Fridays for Future took to the streets across the globe Thursday to stand with the people of Ukraine—whose country was invaded last week by Russian President Vladimir Putin—and call for a world that prioritizes peace and freedom from fossil fuels for all. As Ukrainian forces and civilians fought Russian invaders who have been accused of war crimes, members of the youth-led movement—who generally hold school strikes on Fridays, inspired by Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg—carried signs that said #StandWithUkraine and #NoMoreWars. Demonstrators also used the hashtags to share updates on social media.

The Ukraine War and the “Good” Refugee – » The Australian Independent Media Network

Scott Morrison shames Australia yet again

Distant Australia, whose participation in the illegal war against Iraq which produced refugees and asylum seekers that would eventually head towards the antipodes, is now offering to accept a higher intake of refugees from Ukraine and “fast track” their applications. The same politicians speak approvingly of a system that imprisons asylum seekers and refugees indefinitely in Pacific outposts, promising to never resettle them in Australia. The subtext here is that those sorts – the Behrouz Boochani-types – deserve it.

In the words of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC), “The Morrison Government has presided over the dismantling of Australia’s refugee intake, leaving Australia unable to adequately respond to emergencies,” with 2022 “marking the lowest refugee intake in nearly 50 years.” True, the global pandemic did not aid matters, but COVID-19 did little in terms of seeing a precipitous decline in refugee places. Australia’s refugee intake cap was lowered from 18,750 persons in 2018-2019 to 13,750 in 2020-2021.

The reduction of such places has taken place despite Canberra’s role in a range of conflicts that have fed the global refugee crisis. Australia’s failure in Afghanistan, and its imperiling of hundreds of local translators and security personnel, only saw a half-hearted effort in opening the doors. The effort was characterized by incompetence and poorly deployed resources.

The grim reality in refugee politics is that governments always make choices and show preferences. “Talk of moving some applications ‘to the top of the pile’ pits the most vulnerable against each other,” opines the critical founder of the ASRC, Kon Karapanagiotidis. “This is a moral aberration and completely out of step with the Australian public.”

The war in Ukraine has demonstrated the West’s Double Standards on Refugees

John Howard Tony Abbott and Scott Morrison didn’t have any sympathy let alone empathy for refugees and all used and politicized their difference from us. Scott Morrison was always know to be enthusiastic about the tactic of using Middle Easterners as political tools after the Cronulla riots. He still does holding innocent people for over 9 years “using them” as a deterrant rather than accepting the tragedy of their circumstance.

There are no benefits or advantages in war — any war — because it is always the poor, the innocent and the weak who pay the biggest price. However, war gives us the opportunity to study history, current affairs and future possibilities. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has, in just a few days, taught us some important lessons about how the West really views Arabs, Muslims and other Middle Easterners, including Arab Christians. It should also have taught us that it is necessary to sympathise with the victims, regardless of their race, gender or religion, while not forgetting our own victims, whether the guardians of the “universal values” myth like it or not.

Can Anyone Convince Vladimir Putin To Choose Peace In Ukraine? | HuffPost Latest News

Russia's President Vladimir Putin is seen during a meeting with members of Russian business community in the Moscow Kremlin on Feb. 24.

His over indulgence in steroids might have amplified his isolation, paranoia and what appears to be his Stalinist mentality. If the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree Putin hasn’t come very far from being the KGB officer he was trained to be. Perhaps we are witnessing the frog, the scorpion and it’s simply his nature. The view of Putin with his advisors seperated at the ends of a very, very long table suggests he didn’t come to listen.

“Right now, I frankly do not see how anybody can get through to Putin,” said Vaira Vike-Freiberga, a former president of Latvia who met with her Russian counterpart repeatedly. “He is so dead set on rewriting history … he has invented a parallel universe in which he lives mentally.”

Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine: Outing the Iraq War White Washers – » The Australian Independent Media Network

John Howard, Tony Blair and George Bush do have a lot to answer for and Putin has brought that into relief. Bullshit is bullshit and they were all a parties to it when they invaded Iraq “to save us”.

It might well be said that the US-led Iraq invasion in 2003 was a product of its own mental disease, the product of ideological and evangelical madness, accompanied by a conviction that states could be forcibly pacified into a state of democracy. Where there was no evidence of links between Baghdad and al-Qaeda operatives responsible for the attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001, it was simply made up.

Conservative media’s love for Putin continues even after his invasion of Ukraine | Media Matters for America

The face of Russia's Vladimir Putin shaded in red on a red and black background with "Fox News" repeated four times

However, here in Australia Crikey’s political editor focuses on left-wing’s John Pilger as if he were Putin’s major supporter. There is something odd about Keene’s personal animus against Pilger whose body of work will go down in journalistic history. It’s Keene who seems to be lost and can’t see the forest for a tree. Keene is. somehow in a moment of madness, suggesting Pilger has jumped the gutter and landed in the Conservative’s media camp. I see his Crikey article as one man’s self-serving, personal vendetta of which he won’t be so proud of in in his work’s body in years to come. However when Keene is long forgotten people will still be reading and watching Pilger.

Conservative media have been praising Russian dictator Vladimir Putin since the Obama administration, and that behavior has continued even after Russia began its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. American right-wing media coverage of Putin has been so over-the-top that Russian state-backed media have used some of it for their own propaganda.

Don’t get too excited by Australia’s rebounding economy – it’s a distorted snapshot of the true picture | Greg Jericho | The Guardian

People shop and dine at cafes inside the Queen Victoria Building in Sydney in October 2021.

Josh Frydenberg doesn’t tell it all. The Great Bungee Plunge downwards was always going to  rebound back but in a much smaller space than when it came down and no rise as far when all is considered. Frydenberg is simply using bullshit stats as truth by eliminating the history and the changed context in which events have occurred. Besides what did Josh Frydenberg do to make his “good news event” even happen?

The Australian economy at the end of 2021 rebounded for one reason alone – people coming out of lockdowns in the late winter and spring period spent their money. But ironically this massive surge of growth from households comes at a time when workers are receiving a smaller share of the economy than ever before.

NSW floods: almost 500,000 people across state under evacuation orders or warnings | Australia east coast floods 2022 | The Guardian

After a car tuck in flood water on College Street, Richmond as police tell residents in low-lying areas to evacuate homes with more flooding expected.

Morrison the socialist made all Australia pay for the increased “risk insurance” companies charged after the last flood in Qld will he do the same again? He set up a $4.5 bn emergency fund  back then and hasn’t spent a cent. Building permits for developments were freely handed out were handed out in wrong places, and Climate Change was fobbed off as a Left-Wing political ploy. An ICAC was promised and never delivered because we saw what happened in NSW  when some 10 LNP politicians were caught taking backhanders. These floods are no longer an “unprecedented” event.

About half a million people in NSW are under evacuation orders or warnings as the wild weather system that has battered parts of eastern Australia for a week homes in on the greater Sydney region.

Trumpers are individual privateers just doing it for themselves. There is no Trickle Down only a Trickle Up end game as far as they’re concerned. Trump is playing that out through the Capitalist Democracy of America. It’s institutional court system allows payment for justice and appeals after appeals and can  be bought. Russian Oligarchs thought they were safe in that enviroment, but are now looking for safer, more hidden and dark harbors. Their DNA like Trump’s is the same and completely transactional.

The appearance of superyachts near the Maldives and Seychelles this week illustrates the degree to which Russian oligarchs are panicking in response to the sanctions the West has imposed on Russia and the ultra-wealthy businessmen seen close to Vladimir Putin over the invasion of Ukraine.Superyachts belonging to billionaires Victor Rashnikov, Oleg Deripazska, Alexei Mordashov and Andrey Kostin are floating around the island nations, according to Bloomberg reports.

Press conference with President Volydymyr Zelensky

Scott Morrison announced “Ukrainians were automatically “refugees” and would go “straight to the top of the ladder” shows he;s a recist ethnicist and elitist. Iraqis , Aghanis, or Africans and definitely those who arrived by boat are different. They are “illegals”, first and even if “asylum seekers” they will never be settled here or even make it to Morrison’s ladder in total contravention to the International convention which we signed. Even the ACL the Australian Christian Lobby took umbrage at Morrison’s un Christian, Racist and Ethnicist announcement that suggested Ukrainians are somewhat an exception when it came to need. But that’s Scott Morrison who picks up a ukelele and can’t play. He  has a history of takink on jobs he simply hasn’t the DNA or capacity to do and it’s readily ovbious for all to see.

This double standard is all the more apparent in how prominent journalists have discussed the war. CBS reporter Charlie D’Agata apologized after describing Ukraine as “civilized” compared to places like Iraq or Afghanistan, but he is far from alone. Others have similarly expressed shock that a war could happen outside a “third world nation” to people who “seem so like us.” In response to such examples, the Arab and Middle Eastern Journalists Association released a statement condemning “orientalist and racist” rhetoric and demanded that newsrooms apply the same consideration to all victims of war.

How white supremacy fuels the Republican love affair with Vladimir Putin | Salon.com

Donald Trump, Tucker Carlson and Vladimir Putin (Photo illustration by Salon/Getty Images)

It’s as true today in Australia as when Whites stepped off the boat in 1788 and imported Racism to this country. to say things have improved is to say if you were burien in  6 foot of shit and your now only 4 foot under things have improved  Yes, Woke is BLM, the fact is that Black lives do Matter, and yes, it’s  “cancel culture’ but more. It’s “change culture” for women for LGBTQI’s for the homeless etc. It’s for the betterment of us all and not just the maintenance of the privilege, and power generationally historically and structurally handed down to a marginal few. Woke is proudly multicultural, and the fact that our Institutions don’t reflect that  is the reason for the drive and need to change.

Racism is not an opinion.

It is a fact.

This is true both in the United States and around the world.

Racism and white supremacy continue to structure American society, largely by privileging some groups (those defined as “white”) and disadvantaging others (especially those deemed “Black,” but other nonwhites as well). These outcomes are the aggregate result of individual, systemic and institutional discrimination and other forms of racial animus. This has been a fixture of American life and society since before the founding of the republic through to the post-civil rights era and now the Age of Trump and a 21st-century form of fascism. In practice, racism and white supremacy are a “changing same,” constantly adapting over time to fit American society in support of the maintenance and expansion of white privilege, white power and white control.

The “She’ll Be Right, Mate” Syndrome: Australia’s Doomed Koalas – » The Australian Independent Media Network

When struggling for answers, those in power find it best to defer matters to a committee or working group. Not wishing to buck this tendency, Ley announced that the Threatened Species Scientific Committee would be considering “the status of the Koala.” The language of the announcement was a jarring mix of promotion and doom, with the doom element – namely, declaring the koala as endangered in three jurisdictions – buried in over the rainbow promises of protection. “Together we can ensure a healthy future for the koala and this decision, along with the total $74 million we have committed to koalas since 2019 will play a key role in that process.” Such empty displays of political theatre are acts of distraction and denial. The koalas may have been offered “a nice new word,” huffed Deborah Tabart, veteran chairwoman of the Australia Koala Foundation, “but behind all the photo opportunities and political rhetoric they continue to approve the destruction of the koala habitat.”

Parts of NSW and Queensland are suffering unprecedented floods. At the same time, they are experiencing an unprecedented pandemic. Before that, they were dealing with unprecedented bushfires, following unprecedented heatwaves causing unprecedented drought. The loss of biodiversity is being labelled an extinction event as we clear land and destroy habitats. More pandemics are inevitable as we further crowd the planet. Despite decades of warning from every credible expert about the inevitable consequences of constant growth with no regard for the environment, our politicians assume surprise when their unbridled fetish for wealth and power wreaks havoc on the world. We have to sell coal because it increases our GDP. Temporarily. Until the next unprecedented “natural” disaster comes along.

In land of flooding rains, we still don’t give our biggest river system the care it needs – Michael West Media

Commonwealth legislation on water market behaviour governance and integrity is still very much a ‘work in progress’, or perhaps even a twinkle in the Treasurer’s eye. Like so many other integrity issues, it is in the too-hard basket. But now is the time to act. Water is abundant, tempers have been cooled, and greater attention is being applied to the complex challenge of balancing the competing uses of water and our river system. Waiting till the next drought might seem easy, but it will make reform many times harder.

A war started by an egregious international bully, an egotist with a right-to-rule attitude, a plank over his own eyes, and a blurred nostalgia for times long gone. The political…

Joining Steve Bannon, Trump endorses “precinct strategy” empowering QAnon conspiracy theorists and election deniers | Media Matters for America

trump bannon

Dreaming of a Leninist Revolution in America? It starts “from the ground up”!! Sounds like Trump and Bannon are recalling the KKK and right-wing militia back to councils, PTAs and local white churches. Bring your weapons is recommended!!  Yet he and Trump deny they incite violence.

At least 8,500 new Republican precinct officers (or equivalent lowest-level officials) joined those county parties. We also looked at equivalent Democratic posts and found no similar surge.” Schultz has also advocated that those who obtain these local Republican Party positions should be prepared to inflict violence in carrying out their roles, telling supporters during a July conference call, “Make sure everybody’s got a baseball bat. … I’m serious about this. Make sure you’ve got people who are armed.” Bannon’s hosting of Schultz on his broadcast has been credited with the popularization of the so-called “independent legislature doctrine,” a radical and previously obscure legal theory that would allow a state legislature to unilaterally overturn election results — an anti-democratic concept that has been embraced by many state Republican legislators in the wake of Trump’s loss in the 2020 presidential election. In a new statement, Trump yesterday cited Schultz by name and touted his “precinct strategy” as a way that “we can take back our great Country from the ground up.”

Dud UK-based media index lauds News Corp and bashes ABC, SBS and IA

Lauding News Corp???

UK based GDI Index proves itself to be useless, almost conspiratorial as News Corp is. It’s based in the UK where Rupert Murdoch’s media behemoth was proved by Tory government inquiry to be totally corrupt. Where the world saw Rupert Murdoch do an Alan Bond and feign old age and dementia to stay out of jail. He had to close The News of the World and was allowed to keep his lisence. So fled to America to continue what he does best there, PR for the wealthy and powerful, misinformation his product. Currently, he’s spreading it for Russia’s Vladamir Putin. Fox News is even being celebrated by Putin’s State Media. I guess the UK based GDI is too.

The efforts of a self-appointed ratings agency that surveyed Independent Australia and 33 other Australian outlets have shown how you need to be careful in the tricky world of publishing. A report by the group called Global Disinformation Index (GDI) declared that the News Corp publications – Courier Mail, Sydney Telegraph and Herald Sun – were less likely to spread disinformation than Independent Australia.

QAnon followers are casting Putin in a positive light | Salon.com

Participants display Qanon flags at an event marking the 7th anniversary of the Pegida movement. The flag features the head of Russian President Putin, the Q for "Qanon" and the letter abbreviation WWG1WGA ("Where we go one we go all"). Meaning "Where one of us goes, we all go", or "One for all, all for one". With this, the Qanon followers evoke the cohesion of their community. (Matthias Rietschel/picture alliance via Getty Images)

The Morrison’s employed their Besties who were revealed to be QAnon members as far back as 2019.

The ABC’s Four Corners has delayed airing a program about the prime minister’s connection to a QAnon figure, but much of the detail is already on the public record.

While the International Criminal Court in The Hague is being called on to open an investigation into potential war crimes committed by Russian President Vladimir Putin in Ukraine, QAnon followers around the globe are praising him and casting him in a positive light. Though it might sound macabre, adherents of the bizarre and all-encompassing conspiracy movement believe that a major global crisis such as the current one is intrinsic to something they call the “Great Awakening,” a prophecy that forms the crux of the massive conspiracy that claims top Democratic leaders will one day be arrested for running a global sex trafficking ring.

Putinism is breeding in the heart of the Republican party | Robert Reich | The Guardian

Given Australia’s L-NP is little more than a carbon copy of GOP policies Putanism is also breeding in their heart. Surveillance of Australians has never been greater than the degree to which it has under Peter Dutton and he wants it increased. He wants politician’s parliamentary privilege extended beyond Parliament to be able to defend and sue defamation cases at will and taxpayers’ expense.

The L-NP wants criticism stifled by putting restrictions in place on social media for individuals, disallowing the ABC and Independent media a source of income but ensuring the corporate MSM has theirs. Basically guaranteeing their quid pro quo relationship is in tact and will continue. Lets face it, Murdoch is currently Putin, the GOP’s and the Australian Liberal Party’s biggest supporter and Murdoch is Putin’s in the West. Fox News is even being dubbed and replayed on Russian State Media.

Make no mistake: Putin’s authoritarian neo-fascism has rooted itself in America. It may be possible to prevent Putin’s aggression from spreading to the rest of Europe. But it is not possible to win a cold civil war inside America without destroying the United States – another of Putin’s objectives when he ordered his spy agencies to help Trump.

How the Left Should Respond to Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine

A convoy of Russian military vehicles moving towards border in Donbas region

Those who don’t stand in solidarity with the oppressed cannot call themselves leftists.

If you opposed the criminal U.S. attack on Iraq in 2003, then you must oppose this criminal attack on Ukraine.

Rich Russians splash out on luxury to stop savings melting away

Bulgari’s Diva Dream Mosaica: Rich Russians are splashing out on jewellery and watches to park their cash.

It’s the Trump’s to a tee. Oligarchs in Russia or Capitalists in  America all instinctively behave the same with no regard for the country or its people. Trump did it in Atlantic City grabbed what he could and ran. When Fascists and Capitalist states begin to crumble it’s everyone for themselves and nothing for the people. Patriotism is nonexistent and the excuses for their actions reveal themselves as fake and hollow rationals.

Ukraine was Putin and his henchmen’s opportunity grab to grab and consolidate the wealth of Ukraine for themselves just as the invasion of Iraq was a grab for the control of oil in the Middle East. In that, there is an equivalence of thought and behavior no matter the denials. We saw Trump go for the oil in Syria and double-cross the Kurds and US allies just as Murdoch has gone for black gold protected by Israel’s illegal occupation of Syrian territory in the Golan Heights.

With sanctions on Russia sending the ruble plunging and keeping stock markets shuttered, the country’s wealthy are turning to luxury jewellery and watches in a bid to preserve the value of their savings.
