Asia’s energy pivot is a warning to Australia: clinging to coal is bad for the economy

The COP26 climate negotiations are just weeks away, and the tide is now turning against international finance of coal-fired power generation. The implications for Australia cannot be ignored.

Facebook’s Secret Blacklist of “Dangerous” Groups and People

While the past two decades have inured many the world over to secret ledgers and laws like watchlists and no-fly bans, Facebook’s privatized version indicates to York that “we’ve reached a point where Facebook isn’t just abiding by or replicating U.S. policies, but going well beyond them.” “We should never forget that nobody elected Mark Zuckerberg, a man who has never held a job other than CEO of Facebook.”

Sally Rooney Is Right to Boycott Israel

Rooney’s statement, published today, made that absolutely clear: The Hebrew-language translation rights to my new novel are still available, and if I can find a way to sell these rights that is compliant with the BDS movement’s institutional boycott guidelines, I will be very pleased and proud to do so. In the meantime I would like to express once again my solidarity with the Palestinian people in their struggle for freedom, justice, and equality. Modan publishes books in partnership with the Israeli Ministry of Defense. It’s exactly the kind of firm that the BDS campaign had in mind when it called for a boycott of Israeli cultural institutions that are “complicit in maintaining the Israeli occupation and denial of basic Palestinian rights.” Rooney previously gave her support to the Pakistani-British novelist Kamila Shamsie when she rejected an offer to have her work published in Israel. The 2019 open letter in support of Shamsie, signed by Rooney and other writers including Arundhati Roy and J. M. Coetzee, came after the German city of Dortmund had stripped her of a literary prize because she endorsed the BDS campaign.

To Turn away from Fossil Fuels, take the Fight directly to the Corporations – That’s how Apartheid Fell

The rhetorical battle over turning away from investments in companies contributing to climate change, it seems, has been won. These moves came after more than a decade of broad-based campaigns against fossil-fuel investments, which at Harvard included petitions, protests, a legal complaint to the Massachusetts Attorney General, and storming the field during a Harvard-Yale football game. And yet, as activists learned in the decades-long campaigns to disinvest from apartheid in South Africa, the implementation of commitments was often limited by fine-print qualifications or loopholes. Despite legitimate celebration of new momentum, many questions remained unanswered, as detailed in an analysis in Harvard Magazine. The real test of success must be to what extent resources are actually removed from fossil-fuel production and reinvested in renewable energy. On that front, Big Oil — like the planet — is beginning to feel the heat.

News Corp’s Andrew Bolt says his company’s climate campaign is ‘rubbish’ | News Corporation | The Guardian

Screenshot of Andrew Bolt on Sky News criticises the News Corp liftout on net zero

Andrew Bolt has had the rug “seemingly” pulled out from under his climate change denials by the very organization he works for and supports him. That should tell us it’s a marketing promotion boosting Morrison’s LNP, to seemingly change tack, on the promise of Net-Zero by 2050. For heaven’s sake we were notified weeks ago that this campaign for Scott was coming. Of course it’s is rubbish just as the Angus Taylor’s argument that Net-Zero doesn’t mean ” zero carbon emissions”. Slightly cleaner and more costly washed fossil fuels is then all they need do. Angus Taylor has guaranteed to fund CO2 emissions to the tune of $250bn if and when nobody else on the planet will.

As for Bolt’s argument that News Corp’s editorial change is “rubbish” well that’s simply posturing, a performance to appear balanced and make noise. All they are doing is what Philip Morris did when it announced it would “un-smoke the world” while still continuing to sell as much tobacco as possible along with the other added carcinogens or tar. Yes Bolt’s a participant because the campaign allows him the space to play the contrarian in the performance and repeat what it is he’s been doing for the past two decades maintaining his ego and crafted media identity little else. After all he can’t simply keep attacking Bruce Pascoe, Muslims, women and the ABC.

The prominent Murdoch commentator Andrew Bolt says News Corp Australia’s major editorial campaign to speed up climate action is “rubbish” and the “global warming propaganda” provides political cover for Scott Morrison. “Millions of Australian readers would have got a shock this morning when they picked up their Murdoch newspapers around the country,” Bolt told his Sky News Australia audience after the company published 16-page wraparounds in every tabloid.

News Corp’s turnaround on climate crisis is a greenwash Ketan Joshi The company won’t change until it understands the grave damage it has done with its ugly legacy of denialist reporting News Corp Australia’s office in Sydney ‘News Corp has played a major role in ensuring a truly catastrophic track record for emissions in Australia over the past decade.’ Photograph: Paul Miller/AAP Tue 12 Oct 2021 16.29 AEDT Last modified on Wed 13 Oct 2021 09.51 AEDT Let’s be straight. The planet is heating because we’re adding gigatonnes of greenhouse gases into our habitat. The consequences get worse for every additional gram we displace from deep underground and send into the sky, through the dual actions of extraction and combustion. We know with certainty that the impacts – inflicted already and inevitably due if we don’t stop fast – are gruesome and visceral. As the world recovers from Covid-19, so too does fossil fuel use. It’s largely unsurprising, considering how little real work was done to decouple human existence from the burning of carbon. Not only do these gases accumulate in the atmosphere, the amount we add each year is itself increasing. That is to say: it’s getting worse quickly

Another example involves News Corp uncritically repeating the greenwashing campaigns of some of Australia’s most severe emitters. AGL Energy has openly decided to breach a 1.5C-aligned trajectory by keeping its coal plants open well into the 2040s. Ditto for Energy Australia and Alinta Energy, both justifying this on the grounds that shutting down coal would cause “blackouts”. It’s the worst of corporate climate delay, but it’s heralded as if it’s a grand turnaround on climate.

Defence emails reveal staff shame at Dutton’s ‘tone-deaf’ IDAHOBIT morning tea ban

Emails reveal staff felt shame after Defence Minister Peter Dutton banned IDAHOBIT celebrations, claiming “we are not pursuing a woke agenda”.

He really believed he could be this country’s PM. He mocked our Pacific neighbors and had no qualms sneaking in Operes as a special favor for a mate. Apparently, if he had his way the Sydney Mardi Gras would be banned because it’s “woke” and a critical want to replace heterosexuals in every aspect of our institutional lives. Peter Dutton is our paranoid Minister of Defence and showing Australia he’s doing his job and not acting on his personal whims.

The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age in May revealed that the Defence Minister had ordered his department and serving military personnel to stop events with “particular clothes in celebration” after Defence held morning teas where staff wore rainbow clothing to mark IDAHOBIT. Mr Dutton told Defence Force Chief Angus Campbell and secretary Greg Moriarty to issue a note ending such events, saying he would never tolerate discrimination but would not pursue a “woke agenda” either.

Exposure will not weary them, nor shame condemn – the giant pork barrel that is the federal government’s web of grants and rorts rolls on regardless. With the stench of the “#carporks” still fresh, the latest instalment from grant corruption central is Round Five of the Building Better Regions Fund – $300 million worth of political largesse hopelessly skewered towards electorates held by the coalition and independents. Spreadsheet sleuth Vince O’Grady analysed the $294 million “infrastructure projects stream” to find funds were allocated according to form – 16 per cent to Labor electorates, 11 per cent to seats held by independents and 73 per cent to Coalition seats.

If concessions are made to develop ‘green energy’ industries using our natural advantages of plenty of open space and sunshine/wind rather than subsidising the coal industry, the entire planet will be better off. If the government has to spend a little extra initially to resettle refugees rather than keeping them in prison, or supporting the homeless, the unemployed or those with a disability get a helping hand when they need it, we should be proud that we are doing something that is beneficial to the majority of our community. Most of those that get support when they need it end up repaying the contribution in spades. Does that mean “journalists” at Ch9 and Murdoch media who use anonimity to boost the LNP will need to reveal their sources or identify themselves? They are so often unidentified when smearing Dan Andrews or suggesting IBAC is the corrupt body? Will Peter Costello or Rupert Murdoch be declared a “publisher” and forced to reveal their hidden sources or be treated like Julian Assange. It seems Joyce and Morrison are trying to sleepwalk Australia to fascism. It wasn’t so long ago these assholes were defending Andrew Bolt’s right to to be a media racist to “free speech” and the abolition of the Racial Discrimination Act.

The RDA and the UNHCR were the rogue bodies not so long ago. Now it ICAC according to Morrison and Joyce and history teachers according to Tudge. The do nothing LNP have merely imported Trump’s “alternative facts” when we hear Angus Taylor tell us “Net zero doesn’t mean no carbon emissions”

The federal government may try to force Facebook to gather more identification information on their users and hand it to authorities if asked, as part of Scott Morrison’s latest square-up to the social media giants. It potentially opens the door for the government to consider a controversial plan for Australians to provide 100 points of identification to keep their social media accounts – a suggestion that privacy advocates condemned. Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce last week suggested that Facebook and Twitter could be treated as publishers under Australian law.

Australians must be wary of Trump’s “big lie” infiltrating our politics

Unfortunately, the “big lie” recipe seems to have found its place in Australia. There is no better example than the recent resignation of former NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian as a result of ICAC revealing it was investigating whether she had been involved in ‘a breach of public trust’ between 2012 and 2018 because of her relationship with disgraced former MP Daryl Maguire. The mainstream media and media personalities have tried to portray the former Premier as a victim of the “nasty ICAC” which is really a stooge for disrupting “good” government.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison is quoted saying that the former Premier had ‘a lot more to contribute to Australian politics’  and that ‘she has tremendous support both in the Liberal Party and, I think right across NSW’.

John Roskam, CEO of the Institute of Public Affairs, a right-wing organisation, opined that:

‘A grubby political deal is not necessarily a corrupt one and it should be the voters that decide whether it is or not, not lawyers applying their own subjective and vague criteria of what’s “corrupt”… The public should decide whether its trust has been breached, not bureaucrats.’

Berejiklian had no problems in slamming ICAC accusing it of pursuing her over “ historic matters” that had already been investigated and explained.

Wahhabi Saudi Arabia has a More Rational Vaccine Mandate than the US Republican Party

While Tucker Carlson is still dragging both his knuckles on the ground The Saudis show just how far ahead of him they are when it comes to vaccine mandates.

Republican TV idol Tucker Carlson called Iraqis “monkeys” and “illiterate” and maintains that “white men” invented civilization. That is, Muslims in his view are uncivilized, an opinion widely shared in Republican circles. I pointed out to Mr. Carlson that actually it was the Iraqis who invented much of what we now call civilization. But here is another kicker: Saudi Arabia, the bastion of a peculiar kind of Wahhabism or ultra-fundamentalist form of Islam, is putting in a whole range of vaccine mandates. Its religious and state officials now say that anyone who comes on pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca must have two doses of a WHO-approved vaccine.

At a rally in Iowa on Saturday, Trump proclaimed that he was trying to “keep America great,” but that America isn’t great right now. “Well, he really is kind of babbling and incoherent, but that’s what people show up for,” he explained. “So, when he says make America great again, again, you have to ask, well, if he did it the first time, it really wasn’t a very good job. Eight months later, it needs to be redone. It didn’t quite stick, this greatness that he gave us.” “It was over nine months. The shelf life on the greatness wasn’t very long, I guess,” said Acosta.

Coalition overreach: Twitter is not the problem

Big differences when it comes to policing “Free Speech” Political speech and whistleblowing are significantly different from Racial Discrimination and sexual abuse yet the LNP right-wing declared all speech should be free as speech is speech and it’s all equivalent. Tony Abbott certainly supported Andrew Bolt and was prepared ti rid us of the RDA, Racial Discrimination Act. However not any more  says Scott Morrison and it’s no longer so! However, he’s not going to police it but says he will force Twitter and Facebook etal to dance to his tune. Mandatory ID of the Twitterati will be required is his threat but not so across the board. Those “sources” unnamed in the media supporting him and his party over and above, say Dan Andrews will be ok and of course that privileged protection he has when he’s  in parliament will continue. Politicians should be allowed and encouraged to sue the electorate.

Morrison personally isn’t what might be regarded as an “action man”. He’s a wordsmith and has a team of highly paid elves on call constructing his words, slogans, and catchy sentences and he  believes that’s should be an exclusive and protected by executive privilige.

Once again politicians and journalists are talking up the bad side of social media and threatening to police our Twitter identities. However, as Dr Martin Hirst argues, this is just another attack on our right to political speech.

However, this is the nature of political speech. The one thing that politicians hate – along with their media cheer squad – is being held to account for their words and their actions. They hate that we use social media to call out their lies and deceit.

In fact, they hate it so much that outgoing-ABC news boss Gaven Morris is encouraging journalists to quit the platform.

Said Morrison:

“I increasingly have told people at ABC News that I certainly don’t want them on there for their job. I’d have no problem if they choose to be there, personally, but we don’t need journalists to be on Twitter or to be on social media as part of their job.”

He’s fudging of course. The ABC – and all media – need the engagement, but they like it better when we keep quiet.

I am struck by the irony that if only the US had invested massively in renewable energy and electric vehicles right from the 1970s when the climate crisis had become clear to scientists, Washington may not have felt the need to invade Iraq to unleash its hydrocarbon resources. When Ronald Reagan took back down Jimmy Carter’s solar panels off the White House, he was symbolically committing this country to generations of energy wars.

Canadian Private Security Companies Have Wreaked Havoc in Afghanistan

Had Trump been able to deploy the private army in the US on Jan 6th the world would be a significantly different place today. Do we think for a moment Morrison’s LNP wouldn’t be by his side today?

The foreign military pullout and Taliban capture of Kabul has decimated the large PSC industry in Afghanistan. Most Afghans are likely happy to see the end of private mercenary forces and hired guns dominating their country. But the number of job openings is at a record high, and many employers report having a hard time filling positions. Why? Some workers have retired early or found other ways to make ends meet. Others simply don’t want to return to backbreaking, low-wage shit jobs. Note that the share of people who were working or looking for work last month (the labor force participation rate) dipped to 61.6 percent, down slightly from the prior month. Participation for people in their prime working years, defined as 25 to 54 years old, also ticked down. In other words, many American workers are now engaged in the equivalent of a general strike.

As a result, employers are raising wages and offering other inducements to lure applicants. Average earnings rose 19 cents an hour in September and are up more than $1 an hour over the last year, after a series of strong monthly gains. Average hourly earnings have jumped by 4.6 percent over the last year. Corporate America wants to frame all this as a “labor shortage.” But that’s not what’s really going on. In reality, there’s a living wage shortage, a hazard pay shortage, a childcare shortage, a paid sick leave shortage, and a health care shortage – and American workers are demanding an end to all these shortages. Or they won’t return to work.

Facebook and Trump: America Is Sleepwalking Towards Fascism | The Smirking Chimp

AT&T and Facebook are unaccountable. Donald Trump’s still free. This week saw an overwhelming number of stories all pointing to the same conclusion: American authoritarianism is on the rise, juiced and protected by some of the richest and most powerful people in the United States. Due to a combination of whistleblowers, investigations, and, in many cases, utter shamelessness on the part of fascism enablers, this is now out in the open. And yet, despite Democrats controlling both Congress and the White House, serious action to fight back and save American democracy remains underwhelming to nonexistent.

Trump Racist Rant: Haitian Migrants Are Bringing AIDS To Infect Us

Murdoch continues to provide human garbage with a platform to spread his filth

Trump said, “We have hundreds of thousands of people coming in from Haiti.” That’s a lie. He continued, “Haiti has a tremendous AIDS problem. AIDS is a step beyond. AIDS is a real bad problem. So hundreds of thousands of people are coming into our country and if you look at the stats, you look at the numbers. Just take a look what’s happening in Haiti. A tremendous problem with AIDS.” What stats and numbers is he quoting? The Russian Trump Tower memos? Does Trump believe a person catches AIDS from a handshake or a cough? “Many of those people probably will have AIDS, and they’re coming into our country, and we don’t do anything about it. We let everybody come in. Sean, it’s like in a death wish. It’s like a death wish for our country!” What a garbage human being Donald Traitor Trump is.

Hannity immediately changed the subject.
