The Costa Concordia lies stricken off the shore of Giglio in January 2012.

Can Berejiklian be likened to the Capitain of the Costa Concordia. He was jailed for abandoning his ship

Berejiklian has been foreshadowing the pandemic in NSW was going to get to its worst, its toughest; that the hospital system would be stretched to its elastic limit in October, based on modelling the NSW Health Department had prepared. Modelling, by the way, she’s not been very forthcoming with. So, knowing that the state is headed for a cliff, she’s essentially jumped out of the driver’s seat to get a better view of the spectacle. “I’ll turn up when I need to,” are words that emerged from her sneering maw today.

There is no greater need th our education system than learning the skills of Critical Thinking. Skills which the extreme Right in the world want done away with and replaced by their absolutist dogmas and facts like “the Steal” “CRT” ” Anti-vax” “Covid Hoax” etc etc etc

In the same post defending Breivik, the Norwegian terrorist who killed 77 people at a summer camp, Yarvin compares Breivik to Nelson Mandela: “No one who condones Che, Stalin, Mao, or any other leftist murderer, has any right to ask anyone else to dissociate himself from a rightist who didn’t even make triple digits. No, WSJ, Taliban are not important to the Muslim battle of ideas — as Moroccan elections bring crushing defeat of religious party

Murdoch Media = WSJ is Rupert’s ground for the “battle of ideas”= Murdoch’s Media Morons

The return to power of the Taliban in Afghanistan has provoked a tidal wave of punditry about what it says about Islam. Since Islam is a 1400-year-old religion with 1.8 billion adherents, the answer to that glib query is surely obvious. Nothing. It says nothing about Islam in general. It says a lot about the American colonial rule of Afghanistan and its failures. Yet that great Orientalist rag The Wall Street Journal gave us the frankly ridiculous headline, “The Taliban Gain Ground in Islam’s Battle of Ideas.” The title may not be the fault of the author– in the newspaper world, setting titles is a prerogative of editors.

News Corp’s climate change shame

News Corp’s shift, if it sticks, could pave the way for both main political parties to support a more aggressive approach to reducing carbon emissions.

They don’t call it Fox for nothing. This is hardly a shift but a slight move sideways brought on by advertisers and the BCA. Murdoch has joined the Fossil fuel companies that now claim are leading the pack in new decarbonizing technologies. They are the new leaders of science moving forward. The new alchemists as the tobacco companies have claimed for years. Don’t expect any mea culpas from the likes of Andrew Bolt paid to confuse us with slinging bullshit.

But there is reason to be doubtful. Only a month ago, in response to the latest report by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, News Corp commentator Andrew Bolt repeatedly chose to mock it with arguments that would not stand up in a high school science class, including the bizarre claim that “if a warming world is better for plants, why not for humans?” It’s hard to imagine him changing. As the COVID pandemic has shown, listening to the science can save many millions of lives. While there has been no shortage of fringe voices spreading coronavirus misinformation, they have largely been ignored and sidelined by the mainstream media. It’s to the enduring shame of News Corp that, on climate change, those voices were instead welcomed in.

The LNP would do the same if it weren’t for Compulsory Voting. The ALP is the only party that actually respects the right of all people to vote and sets out to serve us all. Yes, they make errors and Pink Bats may have been considered one but compared to the errors made by the current LNP, and where they have brought us today, the ALP’s mistakes have been trivial. The LNP’s errors, on the other hand,  have been deliberate and have rippled across not just the domestic landscape but the planet and in the worst possible of ways.

More than 40 years ago, Republican political operative Paul Weyrich told a right-wing gathering, “I don’t want everybody to vote. Elections are not won by a majority of people. They never have been from the beginning of our country, and they are not now. As a matter of fact, our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down.”

Scott Morrison has destroyed Australia’s humanity

Under Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Australia no longer displays compassion and humanity towards those in need, writes Rosalind Fuller. MANY ARTICLES have been written over the last few weeks about the current refugee crisis in Afghanistan as well as the 20 year anniversary of the Tampa debacle, both now inextricably linked. What has also been featured in the commentary is that previous prime ministers, including two Liberal PMs, responded to previous humanitarian crises by offering refuge to people fleeing violence, persecution and in the aftermath of wars. The acceptance of refugees was not always supported by the populace or the political party’s base. These figures are worth restating. Malcolm Fraser, between 1976 and 1982, accepted almost 70,000 Vietnamese refugees (so-called “boat people” — because how you flee apparently matters). A tearful Bob Hawke was so incensed at the Tiananmen Square massacre he made a ‘unilateral decision in 1989 to let the 27,000 Chinese students [that were]present in Australia stay’ and ultimately ‘grant a total of 42,000 permanent visas for Chinese students’. Tony Abbott (not known as a beacon of tolerant politics) in 2015 offered 12,000 Syria

When Lt. Revenge and retaliation are inevitable. Lt. Michael Byrd’s peril will continue into the foreseeable future. He is now more than a man. He is a symbol for the white right and other American fascists, who are likely to perceive him as an ultimate trophy, as well as a way of avenging the killing of Ashli Babbitt. Government wants NBN Co to focus on the money

The Government’s new financial plan for the NBN is more about protecting its own investment as opposed to what’s best for the country. Paul Budde reports. Rather conveniently, NBN Co has removed all forward financial projections beyond the next 12 months in its Corporate Plan for 2022, released last week. As I also mentioned when the Government released its financial results a few weeks ago, understanding how the company is really performing remains rather murky. The new corporate plan only adds to that lack of clarity. Of course, it is no secret that the company is struggling with its financials. It has been unable to lift its average revenue per user (ARPU) as it has been projecting for many years. From now on, projections for revenue, earnings, net profit and CapEx will no longer be provided because of its ongoing efforts to secure debt financing.

When will I need my COVID vaccine booster shot? And can I switch to a different brand?

A man gets his vaccine.

Australia’s vaccine rollout is really starting to gain pace, especially in New South Wales and Victoria. We need to get two doses of vaccine into as many adults as possible — firstly because that helps reduce severity of illness and infection, but also because reaching vaccination targets is likely to bring some new freedoms. The COVID-19 vaccines (Pfizer, Moderna and Astra Zeneca) continue to be highly effective in reducing risk of severe disease, hospitalisation and death, even against the Delta variant. But as soon as we finish one vaccine rollout we may need to begin the next rollout of booster doses.

Of course, the latest iteration of this battle is playing out in a dramatically different media landscape. Conservative charlatans can easily spread their misinformation on Facebook and Twitter, and right-wing cable networks like Fox, Newsmax, and OANN can amplify it. At this point, we can expect bad-faith arguments from Republicans to sow dissension and fear. But we should not expect everyone else who knows better to fall for it. Taliban fighters

The LNP continues to make refugees and asylum seekers suffer by their political silence and lack of direction. Morrison talks about human rights but maintains policies that reflect otherwise. Preparing to return Afgan refugees to land they risked life and limb to escape.

As late as 28 July this year, with the Taliban brutally ascendant across Afghanistan and days from capturing the capital Kabul, Afghan nationals were told by the Department of Home Affairs they were “expected to depart Australia”. After the subsequent rapid fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban, the Australian government announced “no Afghan visa holder currently in Australia will be asked to return to Afghanistan while the security situation there remains dire”. But that moratorium is only temporary, and it appears it does not apply to Afghans in Australia who do not hold a visa.
