The election outcome exposes a gaping disconnect between News Corp and voters | Malcolm Farr | The Guardian

News Corp newspaper headlines from throughout the 2022 federal election campaign

The most stupid was the mouth that was never there. Andrew Bolt put his verbal boot into, not the ALP, but Scott Morrison wishing he was more like Blair Cotteral a “real man” than a real leader. Someone who inspires dogs to fight. One thing is obvious though had the LNP followed Andrew Bolt’s advice they would have been totally obliterated.

Now Sky News after Dark is back and they’re calling for a more divided Australia and mimicking the worst of what the Republicans are currently doing in America. Inspiring mass shooters to kill. Now that’s an original idea, isn’t it? Sky News already inspired the Christchurch massacre.

What is little Matthew Guy going to do now that he only has 6 months to prepare? How far right can Sky make him swing?

And news reporters on Sky News maintained standards on interviewing during the day, although the commentary cohort known as Sky After Dark made little attempt at balance.

But there was a constant rollout of the opinion panjandrums of the News Corp titles tut-tutting uninterrupted over the menace they saw, not just of a Labor government but all those female independents. Some big name writers should worry they look rather silly.

All legacy media might worry as well.

One aspect of the election campaign, anecdotally at least, was that voters knew what they wanted in news and opinion and were open to fresh avenues of information.

They watched press conferences live on the ABC or Sky News, or as they were livestreamed from online sites. Many younger voters didn’t need the newspapers their parents relied on.

The Greens even advertised on Grindr.

In shock and anger over Liberal defeat, Sky News commentators urge party to shift right | Australian election 2022 | The Guardian

Sky News presenter Paul Murray

Andrew Bolt nowhere man, nowhere to be seen during the election wants to now lead the charge as if he was always a presence felt during this election. He wasn’t! So typical of the man who was never there when it comes to the days of the real fight.

Sky News wants the LNP to legitimize and open its membership door to organized Ultra-Right Political thugs. Their ideal is to divide Australia and win at all costs and ensure their minority rule.

But it was Andrew Bolt, the Herald Sun’s star columnist, and Sky News host, who reacted with visceral anger.

“Scott Morrison’s pathetic Liberals got smashed by telling the world they were the Guilty Party,” Bolt wrote. “Guilty on the ‘climate emergency’. Guilty of being mean to women. Guilty on ‘reconciliation’.

“Who’d vote for such a mewling pack of self-haters with so little self-respect that they won’t even sack a party traitor like Malcolm Turnbull? Thank God this election wipe-out has taken out many of their worst grovellers.

“Please, Peter Dutton, take over, and make the Liberals stop apologising for not being more like Labor. Let the Liberals be Liberals again. But still I see some of the more clueless Liberal survivors crawl from the wreckage and whimper that they’ve got to swing even more to the Left.”

The Great Teal Tsunami: Arise Australia’s Independents – » The Australian Independent Media Network

While the bruised LNP will lick their wounds and rue their ignorance of the community movement that gathered pace under their noses, Australia’s major parties will have to consider a new phenomenon: the non-career parliamentarian, one who enters parliament, not for party allegiance and faction but for voter representation and change. For the Westminster model of government, this is indeed a stunning novelty.

Alan Kohler: This was Julia Gillard’s election victory

climate julia gillard alan kohler

It’s tempting to think the Coalition lost the election purely because of climate change, as I foreshadowed here in April, but there’s much more to it than that. Women rose up and voted as a group, mostly for the future of the planet, but also for integrity and the better treatment of women. And while Julia Gillard hardly figured in the campaign, her treatment 10 years ago at the hands of men in both major parties was the unexploded bomb that finally went off on Saturday.

Morrison’s legacy will be a shadow of his predecessors

Nationally, we expect our leaders to make their mark and most do so emphatically.

He never really saw past his Horizon and I’m not talking geographically

Morrison wasted his time as prime minister. The “miracle” win in 2019 left him unprepared, with little agenda, and just papered over the fault-lines and internal feuds within conservative politics. Whatever the result of the 2022 election, time in power ought not be squandered as it was in the 46th parliament.

Peter Dutton touted as next Liberal leader as he claimed victory in Dickson

The problem with the “Liberal Moderates” being wiped out the LNP will now swing even further to the hard Right. They will look at America even more closely and take us deeper into the culture wars being fought by the Republicans there. Community Unity has never been their political goal or tactic rather than total autocratic control for control’s sake,

Peter Dutton will likely become the nation’s next opposition leader after Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced he would step down as he conceded election defeat. Treasurer Josh Frydenberg who was touted as a future leader is at risk of losing his seat to independent Monique Ryan after suffering a more than 10 per cent swing against him. The party will choose a new leader when it next meets, but Finance Minister Simon Birmingham said it’s not an urgent move for an opposition. “There’s not so much urgency on that in opposition so I think we need to take that time to make sure we are clear about who is part of the team going forward,” he told the ABC.

The UK is grappling with soaring inflation.

Inflation is now at a 40-year high after the consumer prices index rose to 9 per cent in April, according to the latest ONS figures. Election 2022 results: Peter Dutton to be next Liberal Party leader after Scott Morrison steps down

Peter Dutton is poised to be the next leader of the Liberal Party.

Let’s hope the Booby wins the leadership prize because he’s sure to lead the LNP further into purgatory. With Dutton, as a leader, there’s no return. The thought of Australia becoming a more equitable place and returning to a “fair go” is now a possibility.

Will the Liberals bow to the Nationals who saved their ass in the regional wilderness? Who will lead them back to respectability? Dutton/Joyce are climate deniers and have an iceberg’s chance in hell of becoming historic heroes . Watch their members abandon ship, because it will only get worse, as they make the LNP spend years in PUNISHMENT PARK. I’m sure there’s an Abbott still dreaming.

Election 2022

He argued the other day, in the context of rejecting a Federal ICAC, that public servants should have no role in deciding where national resources go, or have any sort of oversight of what politicians should do with public funds:

“If we are going to so disempower our elected representatives to do things about what is needed in their communities, then what is the point?”

“We can’t just hand government over to faceless officials to make decisions that impact the lives of Australians from one end of the country to the other. I actually think there’s a great danger in that,” Morrison told the papers.

“It wouldn’t be Australia any more if that was the case, it would be some kind of public autocracy.”

Let that sink in.

This is the prime minister defining the normal operation of the democratic state as a “public autocracy”, arguing that all spending decisions should be taken, unencumbered, by individual members, which, you know, is the normal definition of autocracy (rule by an individual).

As an argument, it is incoherent, but it serves the purpose of redefining democratic practice as autocratic and autocracy as legitimate.

Election 2022: Do we even want to solve housing affordability?”

The Coalition’s policy will make sense to many people.

But once we lose the primacy of need in something like housing, we lose the ability to see how my accumulated investments might be depriving you of something essential. We instead demand to be left to our investments. So, politics now cannot take a dollar off anyone, or even look vaguely like it will. It’s tempting to call this a “no losers” brand of politics, but of course, that’s not quite accurate. There are losers. It’s just that they’re the people who are already losing. We take nothing away from them except their prospects.

Conservatives want to make the US more like Hungary. A terrifying thought | Andrew Gawthorpe | The Guardian

Tucker Carlson delivers a speech via videlink at Cpac in Hungary on Thursday.

The recently leaked US supreme court decision overturning Roe v Wade is perhaps the clearest indication of the danger that this trend poses. By removing a fundamental individual right and once again enabling conservatives to impose their own moral views on women’s bodies, the decision – if passed as written – will be seen on the right as a landmark in how the power of the state can be used to discipline a degenerated culture and regulate morality. Further crackdowns are sure to follow. Locked out of power on the supreme court and facing steep challenges to winning power in America’s unbalanced electoral system, defenders of liberalism will struggle to fight back.

Republican Mainstreaming of White Supremacy Fuels Extremist Violence like the Racist Massacre in Buffalo

Andrew Bolt denies he’s a racist yet he’s been spouting the same things as Carlson for years. “Muslims are trying to replace us” “Africans don’t belong” ” “CRT is being preached in schools” and “Multiculturalism was Australia’s biggest mistake” .” Whites are the victims of Racism”. Peter Dutton, Tudge, Robert, and the Liberal Party generally have politicized anti-Muslim and anti-colored sentiments and have been doing it for years. These boat people ”  Throw children overboard” In fact, Scott Morrison is using the same tactics today as he used to get himself elected to represent the LNP in Cook. This time around choosing Katherine Deeves to represent the LNP in Warringah and turn her into a national political debate.

In 2018, Carlson blamed ethnic diversity for “radically and permanently changing our country” and questioned its value: “I don’t see that diversity is the strength of our country — why don’t you explain it to me?” In his manifesto, which does not mention Carlson by name, the Buffalo terrorist echoed Carlson’s viewpoint: “Diversity is not a strength. Why is diversity said to be our greatest strength? Does anyone even ask why? No one can give an answer.” Carlson helped popularize the far-right ideology that coincided seamlessly with the rhetoric of Republican Party members who also describe immigrants seeking asylum as an invasion or infestation. On America’s most-watched cable news show, Carlson warned viewers that Democrats want “demographic replacement” through a “flood of illegals” in order to increase their voter base.

MAGA Makes the Pilgrimage to Authoritarian Hungary – Mother Jones

The Orban approach to the Autocratic takeover of Democracy and it’s here!

But describing Orbán as an authoritarian doesn’t fully capture the threat he poses. What truly concerns political scientists and democracy advocates isn’t just that he’s established control over the state apparatus, but that his mode of governance has proven enduringly popular among many Hungarians. Indeed, his base of support in the rural countryside has driven him to four consecutive electoral victories, despite growing evidence of corruption and economic stagnation. If the American right does eventually follow Orbán’s advice, mixing redistributive economic policies, voter suppression, and all-out culture war on marginalized groups in ways that prove broadly popular, we’re in deep trouble.

In fact, there’s a good chance that we’re basically there already.

Keep the bastards honest 1977

I have become disenchanted with party politics as they are practiced in this country and with the pressure groups which have an undue influence on the major political parties. The parties seem to polarise on almost every issue, sometimes seemingly just for the sake of it, and I wonder if the ordinary voter is not becoming sick and tired of the vested interests which unduly influence political parties and yearns for the emergence of a third political force, representing middle-of-the-road policies which would owe allegiance to no outside pressure group. Morrison dresses up as Prime Minister in desperate last-ditch attempt to save job | The Shovel

If I didn’t like my dentist I’d change dentists. If she pulled the wrong teeth I’d sue her for malpractice.

Morrison is just the idiot in the sandpit spoiling my kid’s day, my day, in fact, everybody’s day pretending to be something he’s not and needs to be removed.

Despite the move, senior Liberal Party strategists apparently warned against the stunt, saying Scott Morrison acting as a Prime Minister would not be believable to voters.

Final Thoughts After The Long, Long Campaign… – » The Australian Independent Media Network

Much has been made of the fact that Morrison has steered clear of the so-called moderates and the suggestion has been that he realises that he’s electoral poison in those places, but there is an alternative possibility: He actually believes in miracles and he doesn’t care about these electorates, believing that God will deliver the seats he needs with candidates like Katherine Deves. Actually after Scotty bulldozed that kid (“fault on both sides” according to Stuart Robert), did anyone ask her is she has a view on men playing sport against little children or is it only transgender people that she has a problem with?

Whatever worries Labor voters may have, they should rest assured after Morrison told us that he didn’t introduce the integrity commission legislation because Labor opposed it. On that basis, it seems that whoever wins the election that the only legislation brought before parliament will be things that Labor supports!

Murdoch columnists misrepresent the arguments and fight against a federal ICAC – Michael West

QED, Federal ICAC

Without a strong anti-corruption commission, Australians cannot trust that the government of the day is spending the nation’s money in our best interests. So why are News Corp columnists so opposed, asks jurist Stephen Charles. The Murdoch press has shown itself to be no friend of the fight against corruption in politics. The Australian columnists Gerard Henderson and Janet Albrechtsen have led the charge against a federal integrity body. Albrechtsen’s May 11 column supporting Scott Morrison’s disdain for these bodies ignores the real concerns of the public as well as most experts in the field. Before the 2019 election, this government promised to establish such a body.

Democracy for sale? Some local campaigns are running into the millions of dollars.

Which Party wants the Americanisation of our Democracy?

Free speech is a value and a practice worth fighting for, but so is truthfulness.

one of the crucial ingredients in determining who will run the country – is subject to less accountability than the vast range of consumer products that are the staple of commercial advertising. Why should the United Australia Party be allowed to tell us it will cap interest rates at 3 per cent? In the same breath the UAP tells us Craig Kelly will be the next prime minister. Slogans, jingles, unsubstantiated claims and undeliverable promises epitomise the tsunami of mainly tacky advertising.

Australians remain the world’s worst coal power polluters per capita

Australia is still dependent on coal-fired power stations.

Morrison, Taylor Frydenberg and tha LNP will godown as Australia’s greatest liars on Climate Change

Australia produced 4.04 tonnes of carbon dioxide per person from coal-fired power stations last year, according to a new report by energy think tank Ember. That’s roughly four times the global average, double the average per person in countries like the US and Japan, and more than any other country in the G20 or the OECD. University of Adelaide energy economist Dr Liam Wagner said he was unsurprised by the ranking, given Australia has long been one of the world’s most coal-dependent countries.

Three companies control a piece of nearly everything. Should you worry?

BlackRock, Vanguard and State Street hold colossal sway over some of the biggest companies on Wall Street.

‘Control of most public companies – that is, the wealthiest organisations in the world, with more revenue than most states – will soon be concentrated in the hands of a dozen or fewer people.’

As journalist David Dayen has argued, this increasing market concentration reduces consumer choice, raises prices and most likely harms workers.

International Silence over Israel’s media Repression is also an Attack on the Palestinian Narratives

While there is still much focus on the extrajudicial killing of Palestinian-American journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh, calls for justice will remain resonant, at least presently. However, Israel has perfected its tactics of denial and impunity. The international community has not gone beyond its usual statements and Israel has already got away with the assault on Abu Akleh’s funeral at the time, despite the repugnance it evoked. US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken’s glossing over Israeli violence by reframing it as an intrusion is ample proof of what Israel expects and what it receives.

Regardless of what violation Israel commits and on what scale, there is always a corresponding value of impunity which the settler colonial enterprise establishes and the international community approves of.

‘Bulldozer’ Scott Morrison changes his pitch to voters, promising to change his ways – ABC News

Scott Morrison looks down with a frown

Are we that gullible? He lied to get into parliament, He lied to get the top job. He lied to win the last election, We saw him lie through his first term in office. He is a salesman not a leader and we saw him pitch his illusions, tricks, and copy in plain sight from the get-go realizing that walking among us was not going to work.

He played us about as well as his ability to play his ukelele. Morrison’s whole 3-year term has been simply a campaign for another 3-year term. Meanwhile, his team was left confused, disorganized, and divided rabble. Where was the unity? Where was the man who couldn’t walk with the people? He was always on set with his media managers.

The dial isn’t shifting for Scott Morrison. Until now, the election contest has been characterised as between a man that people don’t know and a man that people don’t like. Now, it is between a man whose election would instantly bring change and a man who is promising to change himself, if just given one more chance.

Australia’s Shame

I stepped off the plane this week, finding myself in an oppressive third world country. It was dirty and I felt shame seeing the suffering continue and I was gob smacked when I received the water bill. Whilst I was away and my house was empty I accumulated over $200 worth of charges which included shifting my ‘shit’ at $38 and services charges of almost $130. I also saw my regulars struggling, received numerous phone calls for assistance and watched another family fall apart. On the bright side a highly respected veterans advocate friend of mine saved a veteran’s life.

ANALYSIS: Morrison’s love of Murdoch has left ABC in the dust

The Publicly owned broadcaster of our media News and Information service is the conservative’s enemy as far Morrison, the LNP, the IPA and Murdoch media are concerned. They are a coalition in Australia that simply view the ABC as the enemy of government rule. As far as they are concerned the ABC as News and Information service shouldn’t exist. Morrison’s and Abbott’s relationship with the ABC has been fractious and so for the past decade, their primary aim has been to extract revenue via an annual “efficiency review” which translates to always breaking the LNP promise of no cuts.

Scott Morrison has shown an aversion to appearing in ABC interviews, preferring to be represented by the right-wing mainstream media, writes Jeremy Epstein.

Our Compassion for Ukrainian Victims of War was not on Offer to Iraqis or Afghans when We Invaded

The significance of Ukraine’s struggle certainly doesn’t lie in educating Americans, but perhaps it is finally making us reckon with the costs of war, as we’ve needed to do for so long. As the blood and dread and filth of war are made vivid to Americans through relentless reporting and imagery, is it possible that we will become at least somewhat more mindful of going to war? Might it even lead us — and yes, I know it’s unlikely — to reexamine this country’s militarism in this century and its role in other wars in places we’ve done our best never to see from the inside?
