Bouncer, get your virtual hands off me – Michael West

If Australians knew the extent of the collection and abuse of their online activities and biometric information, they would be marching in the streets demanding decent regulations that protect them against such violations. Unfortunately, when it comes to tech, legislation is either uninformed, out of date, or just embarrassing. That left tech companies on their own to self-regulate, and it’s often in favour of the investors and shareholders. What’s worse, Australians are left in the dark and unprotected when it comes to their digital rights.

Putin fast-track more Russian passports – Michael West

The Russian passport move appears to be part of Putin’s political influence strategy, which has also involved the introduction of the Russian rouble in occupied territory in Ukraine and could eventually result in the annexation of more Ukrainian territory into the Russian Federation. Russia already annexed Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula on the Black Sea in 2014.

The Russian president set the stage for such moves even before Russia’s February 24 invasion of Ukraine, writing an essay last summer claiming that Russians and Ukrainians are one people and attempting to diminish the legitimacy of Ukraine as an independent nation. Reports have surfaced of Russian authorities confiscating Ukrainian passports from some citizens.

The passport announcement came hours after Russian shelling of Ukraine’s second-largest city on Monday killed at least six people and injured 31, prosecutors and local officials said. Russian troops launched three missile strikes on Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, in an attack one official described as “absolute terrorism.”

Steve Bannon, facing jail, agrees to testify to Jan 6 committee

Steve Bannon (left) and his attorney David Schoen speak to the media after Bannon surrendered to authorities in Novemver 2021.

The former president had previously instructed Bannon and other associates not to cooperate with the panel, claiming that executive privilege – a president’s power to withhold certain internal executive branch information –compelled them to stay silent. But in recent days, as several witnesses have come forward to offer the House panel damning testimony about his conduct, Trump has grown frustrated that one of his fiercest defenders has not yet appeared before the committee, people close to him said.

How To Handle Radical Republicans | The Smirking Chimp

It is time to stop using the term “conservative” to describe them and their agenda.

And it is time it to fight back: Enlarge the size of the Supreme Court and limit the terms of justices. Abolish the filibuster and then pass laws most Americans want — protecting voting rights and reproductive rights, and controlling guns. Criminally prosecute Trump and his insurgents.

These are conservative measures. They are necessary to conserve and protect our governing institutions from the radicals now bent on destroying them.

Australian Labor isn’t alone. Parties of the left are making a comeback

One aspect of May’s federal election has been strangely overlooked: Labor’s win follows a pattern among the main centre-left parties in Europe and comparable countries. Traditional social democratic and labour-based parties are resurgent, and now hold office (on their own or in coalition) across all of Scandinavia and in Germany, Spain, Portugal and New Zealand.

Where the past decade has been dominated by talk of a crisis of the left, the debate is increasingly shifting to the crisis of the right.

Enraged evangelists subvert Christianity – » The Australian Independent Media Network

A recent IPSOS poll showed 78 per cent of Australians want religion to be separated from the business of government. Clearly, within that vast public majority are millions of religious moderates who support progressive social policy – like same-sex marriage, VAD, and the right of women to have full bodily autonomy.

Do “moderates” not believe that militant evangelism is actually subverting Christianity? Is there no concern that such extremism serves only to undermine the inclusiveness and tolerance that they see in the teachings of Jesus? And what are they prepared to do about that?

Fox News’ Laura Ingraham Escalates the GOP’s War on Learning: “Time To Defund Government Education” | The Smirking Chimp

In Australia it’s “teachers in Government Schools are Marxists” who encourage sexual fluidity and are grooming our children. Dutton has announced it as his central campaign as leader of the Opposition

Anyone familiar with how Fox News gradually warms its audience up to an idea could see it coming. First, the network ran endless segments hyping the myth that school teachers were training kindergarteners to hate white people with something called “critical race theory.” Next came false claims that schools that accept LGBTQ teachers and students were “grooming” children to be sexually abused by pedophiles. Having implanted the idea that public schools are a scary place turning their grandkids into self-loathing sexual perverts, the end game was finally rolled out during the popular primetime program “The Ingraham Angle”: It’s time to end public education entirely.

Australian parliament: Greens push Albanese government to broaden federal anti-corruption watchdog’s scope and powers

Greens senator David Shoebridge says the party will push for the new federal anti-corruption agency to have broader powers.

One senses that Costello’s SMH, The Age and Ch9 is suggesting that the Greens and the ALP are at loggerheads on the matter of the  Anti-Corruption Watchdog more so than the LNP and Labor are. Why would that be? Why stir up problems where none exist, and in whose favour are they running this chaos theory in government as fact?

This article seems a totally confected piece of crap arguing trouble is brewing and running a “chicken little” scare campaign when in fact there is none. But rather there is normal discussion being held by two parties who fundamentally agree that an anti-corruption commission is necessary.

The Age seems to be doing its best to model itself on Murdoch media. An Opposition rather than a News and information outlet when it places AG Dreyfus having successful talks with backbenchers last rather than first in its report.

The Attorney-General declined to comment on specific features sought by the Greens. But a spokesman said Dreyfus had been encouraged by the consultations he had had with MPs and senators across the parliament.

Last month Dreyfus said Labor’s legislation would build on the model advocated by independent Indi MP Helen Haines, who introduced a widely lauded integrity bill into the last parliament, as well as draw on the anti-corruption commissions already operating in states and territories.

A whole life under Israeli siege | The Electronic Intifada

Joud al-Amarin, age 6, who was diagnosed with leukemia, stands hear her mother and father.

Despair sets in among youths born under Israel’s 15-year siege on the Gaza Strip.

Joud al-Amarin, 6, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in July 2020.

Before her diagnosis, she had lost weight, her limbs were swollen and she was tired all the time.

Doctors in the Gaza Strip, where Joud and her family live, said she would have to seek treatment at An-Najah Hospital in the West Bank city of Nablus.

Joud’s mother, Tahani, applied for Israeli travel permits to accompany her daughter, and the first three times, the approval process was relatively quick.

Yet the family’s most recent application – needed for Joud’s fourth appointment on 2 April – was different.

Tahani waited almost three months for approval only to be informed that her application was under review by Israel for security reasons.

“We are a poor family whose ultimate goal is to treat our daughter and get our daily livelihood, nothing else,” she said.

“Neither I nor my husband have done anything wrong. We don’t have any political interests. Why was I denied? Our life has turned into hell because of Joud’s condition.”

In Letter to Biden, Shireen Abu Akleh’s Family Demands Justice

We saw what happened when Kashoggi was killed by the Saudis why is Israel the exception. When Putin ordered the assassination of those he regarded as enemies we heard the outcry and saw the all-out effort to show his guilt. In the case of Israel, the effort seems reversed.

The family of slain journalist Shireen Abu Akleh has asked to meet President Joe Biden during his upcoming visit to Jerusalem, accusing the White House of an “abject response” to the apparent killing of a U.S. citizen by Israeli forces.

“Dear Mr. President,” the family’s letter, sent to Biden on Friday morning, began, “We, the family of Shireen Abu Akleh, write to express our grief, outrage and sense of betrayal concerning your administration’s abject response to the extrajudicial killing of our sister and aunt by Israeli forces on May 11, 2022, while on assignment in the occupied Palestinian city of Jenin in the West Bank.”

Israel’s impunity is boosted by the US whitewash of Shireen Abu Akleh’s killing

Israel’s narrative is that Shireen Abu Akleh was one of many disposable Palestinians which the state has killed since the 1948 Nakba. Eliminate the word disposable, and the enormity of Israel’s culpability looms large. Had the Palestinian leadership, along with the international community, refused to isolate Israel’s atrocities into separate incidents, its impunity would by now have been considered a legitimate target for justice. Instead, it has been boosted by the US whitewash of Abu Akleh’s killing.

I don’t mean to cavil, but what the hell is “aligned” here? The UK will now have had four prime ministers in just over six years. It’s a rolling mess, a joke to much of the world. The only thing you can really align yourself with is the view that it can always get even worse and even more chaotic. Send in the clowns. Ah, don’t bother. They’re here.

Opinion: What finally sunk Boris Johnson

The Murdochracy is what failed it was the gristle the grout that failed to keep the Conservatives in America, UK and Australia together

Republicans seem to have reached that conclusion before, only to reverse course. This time, however, they have an example directly in front of them, not only of how it can be done, but, crucially, that it can be done with finality. If, as Johnson said himself, “In politics, no one is remotely indispensable,” surely then that is as true of former presidents as it is sitting prime ministers.

Most Australians at this point would not realise what damage the varroa mite can do. But in 2000 in New Zealand, a varroa mite outbreak led to 90% of bees being killed which almost destroyed the industry. And if that were to happen in Australia it would cause $billion in damage to Australia’s agriculture industry which relies on bees for pollination.

When are Individuals are bigger than the Government a question not closed.

Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus has dropped the prosecution of Bernard Collaery, the lawyer accused of revealing Australia had spied on Timor-Leste for profit.

The case has come to represent the treatment of whistleblowers.

Mr Collaery first had his home raided in 2013 after he was accused of conspiring to leak classified information bringing to light Australia’s intelligence gathering in Timor-Leste, whose people he previously represented.

In a long-delayed prosecution after that initial raid, he had faced some 50 hearings in a Canberra court over the matter over four years.

“Today, I have determined this prosecution should end,” Mr Dreyfus said on Thursday.

Tactics like blocking roads, stopping coal trains, and non-violently halting environmental destruction are reminders that the cogs of capital are ever susceptible to a few strategically placed spanners – that the public can always fuck shit up if they’re motivated enough. And right now they seem plenty motivated. It’s important for our future that groups like Blockade Australia and Extinction Rebellion, that people like Greta Thunberg and Bob Brown, that brave activists willing to pay the price, stay this motivated.
