Addressing Climate Change Will Not “Save the Planet”

A boiler tower is surrounded by mirrors at the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System in the Mojave Desert on August 26, 2022 near Nipton, California.

Conservation biology finds itself in a terrifying place today, witness to mass extinction, helpless to stop the march of industrial Homo sapiens, the pillage of habitat, the loss of wildlands, and the impoverishment of ecosystems. Many of its leading figures are in despair. “I’m 40 years into conservation biology and I can tell you we are losing badly, getting our asses kicked,” Dan Ashe, director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under President Barack Obama, told me recently. “There are almost no reasons to be optimistic.”

Ashe suggests that conservation biologists cease the empty claims about “saving the planet” with climate mitigation and start speaking truth: There is at present no plan, in any country, anywhere, on a global or national scale, to address extinctions, biodiversity crash, and habitat loss. The dismal reality is that with a green build-out, we will be saving not the complex web of life on Earth but the particular way of life of one privileged domineering species that depends for its success on a nature-ravaging network of technological marvels. Only once this truth is understood can honest decisions be made about what kind of world humanity wishes to inhabit in the age of ecological disorder.

Politicians persist in plundering the planet for profit

Meanwhile, raging in the background is irrefutable evidence that we are killing our planet. We are guests, passengers on our Spaceship Earth and we have trashed it. We are, at best, vandals. But realistically, we are Kamikaze happy to die for our fossil fool emperors.

Come on Aussies, we can do better than that!

Population almost 8 billion: Pressures on the planet? Countless

A world population milestone of 8 billion. An exploitative economic system that assumes infinite growth on a finite planet that’s getting hotter. You do the maths, writes Michael Bayliss.

1 in 3 of World’s Poorest Countries Spend More on Debt Repayments Than Education – scheerpost.com

While diversified and screaming for unity this planet is divided and disjointed by minorities in power some with clear Human Rights and others with clear Human Wrongs.

A report published this week by Save the Children revealed that 1 in 3 of the world’s poorest nations spend more on paying off debt to wealthy countries and investors than on educating its own children.

My thought for the day We all incur a cost for the upkeep of our health. Why then should we not be liable for the price of a healthy planet? ( John Lord )

Oil Is Killing the Planet — And Driving Inflation

Today’s inflation isn’t just caused by a post-pandemic rebound in fuel prices, but a long-term exhaustion of oil production. We need to end our dependency on fossil fuels without it becoming the pretext for another wave of austerity.

Marise Payne says US and China now need to put climate pact into action

Foreign Minister Marise Payne, who met her New Zealand counterpart Nanaia Mahuta on Thursday.

Believe it or not from the mouth of this “do-nothing” “we have a plan”government comes the chest beating challenge to the US and China “action is louder than words” na nana nana na!! The arrogance that shames all Australians is something exceptional. This Australian Government has shown it’s stripes and shamed us they have joined the Russians and Saudis as a counter pledge in this existential game of climate chess. While proudly crying “we don’t need to have the planet’s best interests at heart” “That’s the Australian ( MAGA ) Way”

Foreign Minister Marise Payne says she welcomes a climate agreement between the United States and China but it needs to be translated into action, conceding there are still many differences between the world’s two largest emitters.

Humans are changing fire patterns, and it’s threatening 4,403 species with extinction

In a major new paper published in Science, we reveal how changes in fire activity threaten more than 4,400 species across the globe with extinction. This includes 19% of birds, 16% of mammals, 17% of dragonflies and 19% of legumes that are classified as critically endangered, endangered or vulnerable.

A thought

The current destruction of the Brazilian rain forests, as alarming as it is might be, or could turn out to be, might just be the catalyst for an event of monumental proportions.

One that might force us into action. The lungs of the earth, as the rain forests are called, as I write are experiencing 7,300 fires and the illegal harvesting of the trees is beyond tally.

Something will have to give sometime.

My thought for the day

On the subject of climate change. Think about this. If we fail to act and disaster results, then massive suffering will have been aggravated by stupidity.

World Temperature Rise Nears Danger Level

The researchers investigated the overlap between socio-economic development and a range of climate change risks, to try to identify the vulnerability hotspots if the global mean temperature should rise by 1.5°C, 2°C or 3°C by 2050, compared with the pre-industrial baseline.

The researchers are from the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the UN Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and the universities of Oxford (UK) and Washington (US).

They report in the journal Environmental Research Letters that they developed 14 impact indicators in three main sectors – water, energy, and food and environment. These indicators include a water stress index, water supply seasonality, clean cooking access, heat stress events, habitat degradation, and crop yield changes.

Someone Tell a Reporter: the Rich are Destroying the Earth

“In the background of a chaotic first year of Donald Trump’s presidency, the conservative Koch brothers have won victory after victory in their bid to reshape American government to their interests.”

“Documents obtained by The Intercept and Documented show that the network of wealthy donors led by billionaire industrialists Charles and David Koch have taken credit for a laundry list of policy achievements extracted from the Trump administration and their allies in Congress.”

“The donors have pumped campaign contributions not only to GOP lawmakers, but also to an array of third-party organizations that have pressured officials to act swiftly to roll back limits on pollution, approve new pipeline projects, and extend the largest set of upper-income tax breaks in generations.”
