Billionaire babies: how James Packer and Lachlan Murdoch kept their eyes on the prize – Michael West

The Succesor by Paddy Manning

Australia’s own  MERITOCRACY is a fable. “If they can do it you can too in the land down under” is the myth preached just as you to can win the lottery and some do while the system guarantees you won’t because it’s designed that way. Inheritance ensures an increase in generational poverty and a flow up and an imaginary promise of a better trickle-down in the next decade. Remember Hawke’s promise that no child will be born in poverty well it worked for James and Lachlan

Billionaire media scions Lachlan Murdoch and James Packer have a close friendship which has endured the ups and downs of mega-deals including Australia’s ‘Super League’ war, the collapse of One.Tel, the rise of Realestate.com.au and failure of Channel Ten – some of the best and worst moments of Lachlan’s career. This edited extract from Paddy Manning’s new biography of Lachlan Murdoch sheds new light on their tumultuous business history.

School education: designed to fail? – Pearls and Irritations

Woman is sitting at a table with her head on a pile of books. Concrete wall background with education icons and a graduation hat above her.

Is this the case here in Australia? Is this what the LNP want and expects of Education?

Education is a fundamental human right and the bedrock of sustainable development: it contributes to all three dimensions of sustainable development – social, economic, and environment – and underpins governance, and security of the individual. The interconnected dividends that result from investments in equitable quality education are immeasurable – generating greater economic returns and growth for individuals and societies creating a lasting impact on public health, decent work and gender equality, and leading to safer and more resilient and stable societies.

Global carbon emissions at record levels with no signs of shrinking, new data shows. Humanity has a monumental task ahead

We have the technology but not the determination or leadership to do what has to be done as fast as possible. Imagine its the Fossil Fuel Industry that’s trying to control COP27 and like the Tobacco Industry which is declaring to be the world leader in QUIT SMOKING action. Fossil Fuel is declaring they are the best positioned to reduce CO2 emissions as they are the biggest current and future investor. The reality however is to slow what needs to be done in the interests of saving their bottom lines and not the planet

Despite this help from nature, the concentration of atmospheric CO₂ continues to climb. In 2022 it’ll reach a projected average of 417.2 parts per million. This is 51% above pre-industrial levels and higher than any time in the past 800,000 years.

Geothermal energy to get relaunch in Germany as government seeks new heating ources

How can this be better than Solar, Wind and Hydro?

The vast potential of geothermal energy generation for heating has so far been under-utilised in Germany, but a new exploration process launched by the economy and climate ministry (BMWK) aims to better exploit the renewable energy source underground. The ministry said it will consult policymakers, industry groups and other stakeholders in potential geothermal energy generation regions to unlock the energy source that can “improve heating supply year-round”.

America’s destructive nightmare may soon be over

Democrats’ triumph may be miraculous but US is still split down the middle | Michael Cohen | The Guardian

Donald Trump

American Democracy proves itself not to be “the ideal Democracy” but rather a failed experiment. Having said that, it doesn’t mean throwing Democracy out as possibly the most equitable form of government. After all Australia’s system managed to stall the over-exaggerated swing to the right this past decade.

Just as Marx predicted the coming of an ideal state of Communism, the execution of which failed, doesn’t mean Marxism is not a more equitable ideal to Capitalism which has also proved to be an increasing failure with every decade for the past 50 years. Corporations, Governments and Inheritance are institutions that have guaranteed any notion of a “free market”, “merit” or “equitable principles” could never be reached.

America is almost perfectly divided between Democrats and Republicans and neither party can cobble together an effective majority. The 2022 midterms are, on the surface, a win for Democrats, but from a deeper perspective they have simply ratified the status quo of the US as a divided and divisive country.

Is This the End of Our National Trump Bender? Yeah, We’ve Heard That One Before | The Smirking Chimp

Unfortunately, it’s not only in America where Trumpians rule despite their moral and character flaws. Think of Berlusconi, Putin, and Netanyahu the Middle East and then simply compare the leaders of the world in general and you will find that Trump is just one among many.

Trump just happens to prefer the global ratings and he isn’t the first celebrity to have turned to politics for ego-driving money and power. But, he also had Murdoch’s global PR empire behind him in a quid pro quo rating relationship dance. Good bad or ugly made no difference to Murdoch or Trump as long as they had the attention. Adding FB, and Twitter,  to the mix and influence for mutual gain is easier to see than the algorithms and bots doing their work for him.

Has Trump come to attention deficit? Has Murdoch really turned it off yet?

His diabolical slipperiness does more than keep him in the news and in the public eye. Nearly everything surrounding the man is grimly hypnotic. I’ve been covering politics for just over 50 years, and I cannot recall another American politician who has proved more spellbinding in the way he lives his personal and public life, not to mention the way he has sold himself, with his New York accent, multiple ex-wives and mistresses, business scandals and all the rest of it to the American public, or to 74 million members of it, anyway.

Deceitful deputy Liberal leader leads public astray

With Murdoch and Costello’s assistance, they aren’t who they say they are

Among other deceptions, Deputy Leader of the Victorian Liberal Party David Southwick has been sprung using his staffers in promotional videos as “local constituents” who claim they’d back him, writes Megan Jane de Paulo.

It’s election time in Victoria and the corflutes have spontaneously sprouted to adorn the gardens and fences of constituents.

Curiously, Southwick’s corflute sign – unlike those of most Liberal Party candidates – doesn’t feature a Liberal Party logo (or even the word “Liberal” in an easily legible font). It’s almost, despite being Deputy Leader of the Victorian Liberal Party, as if Southwick’s embarrassed to be associated with it.

One could argue that he’s lurked around long enough for us to know who he is — but Dan Andrews is arguably more recognisable and he, helpfully, has Victorian Labor logos splashed all over his campaign bus.

Staged videos with fake constituents. Fake credentials. Fake ambulance. Fake Facebook accounts. Fake threats.

My name is Nicole. I’m a scientist and a mother, but underneath all of that I am a woman. Not only this but like all women I have faced significant adversity because of my gender. I have stood in front of a man clutching my abdomen explaining I am bleeding heavily, at a hospital where I was told to ‘rough it’ because the then law made it illegal to transport me or for me to use public spaces or restrooms. As if a dog on heat, I have walked out of a hospital, walked 1.5km to my car in agony bleeding through my pants and squatted on the side of the road, hands resting on dried eucalyptus leaves, as the product of conception violently ejected itself from my body.

Upon making a complaint about this injustice, I have been told by the director (a man) of a hospital, that despite blood work indicating I was pregnant, I wasn’t bleeding enough and couldn’t have been having a miscarriage – because I didn’t bleed on cue. I have been ignored in both my professional and in public life, harassed, assaulted, and objectified and raped. All because of my biology. I have missed work, opportunities and taken countless sick days. All of this, simply for having a uterus, an organ that the opposite sex (men) don’t have. And before I even used her (my uterus) to the full extent of the activities she is capable of, I knew inequality in the deepest part of my soul. This is because I am a woman. This is what it means to be a woman even in my own country, Australia.

COP 27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. United nations climate change conference. 7-18 November 2022 will be international climate summit. Flat vector modern banner.

Four reports and Greta Thunberg highlight the failure of 30 years of COP meetings to slow climate change. Our weekly environment report.

Use of fossil fuels and non-fossil fuels in 2050

The IEA report I summarised above includes the following figure (page 58). It shows the amount of energy (in Exajoules) provided by fossil and non-fossil energy sources from 2020-2050. The figure on the left shows the likely trajectories if all governments’ current policies are pursued. The figure on the right shows the trajectories that are needed to reach net zero emissions by 2050. Current policies will more than double non-fossil supplies by 2050, whereas the net zero course needs an almost four-fold increase. The big change though is in the supply of fossil energy. Current policies will produce only a marginal reduction in fossil fuel energy, but to achieve net zero emissions fossil energy must be reduced to approximately one-fifth of 2020 levels by 2050.

Are liberal American Jews becoming afraid to talk about Israel?

Hundreds of young Jews dance with Israeli flags as they march through the mixed town of Jaffa, in celebration of Jerusalem Day, May 29, 2022. (Tomer Neuberg/Flash90)

Jews support the “idea” of Israel do they support the reality or just stay shtum?

The State of Israel, I said, is currently a place where Jews as a people are not oppressed, and are actually the hegemon limiting the individual and national aspirations of a non-Jewish population. To claim that Palestinians are oppressed by Israel is not a provocative claim but a descriptive one, which raises a string of important questions.

These two very limited examples — the congregant who requested that I don’t talk about Israel, and the congregants who switched off as soon as I did — illustrate a shift in the American-Jewish attitude toward Israel, especially among liberal Jews. Don’t get me wrong, American Jews are still predominantly very pro-Israel; one need only witness the Israel Day Parade in Manhattan or other American cities to get a glimpse of that. But for many liberal Jews, the well-trodden expressions of support for Israel — “the most moral army in the world,” “the only democracy in the Middle East,” “no partner for peace” — are becoming less convincing as the reality on the ground makes them increasingly implausible.

One thing is for sure Trump didn’t start the swing away from the centre that wave started long ago and he jumped on board for the ratings. And boy, did he get a shock?

What it proves you can’t turn 180 degrees on a whim. It took generations to arrive and now it will take generations to change again. The Dems need to dump their old and non-progressive leaders and pass the reign to those futurists like AOC who listen before they speak and who think in terms of “human values”. Like Bernie Sanders, she’s far more representative of the Nation and not just a minority part who can’t see past their individual interests.

Anyone worried about the direction this nation is heading still has much to be worried about. But we should find some solace in the young people who are committed to redirecting it toward social justice and democracy.

“There needs to be a differentiation between an individual decision and a record and a pattern.”

If someone makes a mistake, it’s not the same thing as someone selling out. There needs to be a differentiation between an individual decision and a record and a pattern.

I think there’s a temptation — and we have to be aware of the role that even algorithms play in this, right? YouTube, Twitter, all of it is designed to make us fight with each other; like, that is rewarded algorithmically. And so I think with the awareness of that — and it’s not to say that we shouldn’t [fight] ever — we’re better with sound criticism. But I think we really need to be grounded in strong citation and not just incitement of emotion. Like, let’s talk about having really thorough arguments to make each other better. That’s what political struggle is all about. And engaging in that with one another as a movement.

No such thing as an objective journalist: Notes from the edge of the narrative matrix – Pearls and Irritations

Secretary Antony Blinken

Technology today is even designed in such a way as to have us believe we are less as a species than we in fact are. The algorithms on social media platforms are designed to divide and have us fight each other rather than raise our awareness of humanity. When Jews join Christians to become Nazis betterment of the human condition isn’t their goal. That’s what Israeli has done.  We aren’t individuals we are a species, humans are more alike than they are different. However, doubt and lack of trust have increased and we are the creators of that blunder and not “nature”.

If you find yourself rushing to defend the foreign policy of the most militarily, economically and culturally dominant nation on earth, ask yourself why that is. Ask whom that impulse benefits. Ask how that impulse came upon you. Ask if it could have been put there by propaganda.

It is false to claim that capitalism, competition and greed are “human nature”. I cite as my source for this claim the fact that I am human. The truth is that those who claim capitalism, competition and greed are “human nature” are not actually telling you anything about human nature.

They are telling you about their own nature. And it isn’t even really accurate to call it their “nature”; it’s just their conditioning. And we can all change our conditioning. The only people who deny this are those who haven’t sincerely tried to yet.

Joshua Watt, one of the lead researchers on the University of Adelaide team that conducted the landmark study, summed it up. ‘In the past, wars have been primarily fought physically, with armies, air force and navy operations being the primary forms of combat. However, social media has created a new environment where public opinion can be manipulated at a very large scale.’

‘CNN brought once-distant wars into our living rooms,’ another stated, ‘but TikTok and YouTube and Twitter have put them in our pockets.’

We are all carrying around with us a powerful source of information and news media – and also, most certainly, disinformation that’s coming relentlessly at us from influence operations run by ‘bad actors’ whose aim is to deceive.
