Republicans Tried to Overturn the Election. We Must Not Forget. | The Smirking Chimp

Most Republican voters believe him. It is natural to want to put all this unpleasantness behind us. We are finally turning the corner on the pandemic and the economy. Why look back to the trauma of the 2020 election? Because we cannot put it behind us. Trump’s big lie and all that it has provoked are still with us. If we forget what has occurred the trauma will return, perhaps in even more terrifying form.

Israeli police are determined to escalate the violence in Jerusalem

Palestinian demonstrators flee after Israeli security forces fire tear gas outside Damascus Gate, Jerusalem, May 8, 2021. (Oren Ziv)

For four straight days last week, Israeli police dispersed young Palestinians who had come to Sheikh Jarrah to show support for families facing forcible expulsion by settlers in the East Jerusalem neighborhood. The police labeled the nightly vigils “clashes” and “riots.” In reality, however, it was the police that had resorted to violence.

Republicans tried to overturn the election. We can’t just forget that | Robert Reich | The Guardian

Senator Josh Hawley voted to throw out the results of the 2020 election and gave a clenched-fist salute to the Trumpist mob on 6 January – but is somehow a welcome guest on mainstream media.

America prefers to look forward rather than back. We’re a land of second acts. We move on. This can be a strength. We don’t get bogged down in outmoded traditions, old grudges, obsolete ways of thinking. We constantly reinvent.  The downside is a tendency toward collective amnesia about what we’ve been through, and a corresponding reluctance to do anything about it or hold anyone accountable.

90K Palestinians force Israeli Security to back down, allow them to Pray in Jerusalem, as nearly 100 are injured Protesting Ethnic Cleansing

Al Jazeera reports that despite the Israeli security forces’ attack on worshipers at al-Aqsa Mosque on Friday evening, some 90,000 came back for special evening prayers on Saturday. Initially, the Israeli forces had intended to prevent the worshipers from arriving there from the West Bank, but given the violence they inflicted on worshipers on Friday evening, they decided to back off and let the vehicle caravans in, according to Arab 48. In one instance, the Israeli forces stopped Palestinian vehicles near Abu Ghosh Saturday afternoon, so the worshipers simply got out and began walking the six miles to al-Aqsa on foot. Some of those coming in on foot from the West Bank were greeted by vehicle caravans mounted by residents of the Old City, who picked them up and brought them in.

Warnings of Israeli fascism should be heeded, not condemned | The Electronic Intifada

Woman and children walk past wall spray painted with graffiti reading Death to the Arabs!

Israel lobby groups are pushing to codify into law worldwide a controversial definition of anti-Semitism with the intent of suppressing criticism of Israel. The definition has been rightly criticized for conflating criticism of a state and its political ideology with anti-Jewish bigotry. What has received less scrutiny is how it would also brand as anti-Semitic critiques of Zionism and Israeli policy expressed by Jews, including Israelis, for decades. This definition of anti-Semitism, adopted by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), provides what it says are 11 examples of anti-Semitism. One of the examples – “drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis” – implicitly condemns as anti-Semitic the statements of Jewish critics, especially Jewish Israelis, who have made precisely that comparison. One of the most famous of these comparisons came as early as 1948 when Jewish Americans, among them the scientist Albert Einstein and scholars such as Hannah Arendt, Sidney Hook and Seymour Melman, published a letter in The New York Times protesting the planned visit of Menachem Begin, then the leader of Israel’s Freedom Party, to the US. The Israeli army claimed firebombs had been hurled at them and that “troops operated to stop the suspects by firing toward them,” according to the Associated Press. But DCIP found Odeh had not been involved in any confrontations between occupation forces and villagers when he was shot. Odeh was hit with live bullets in the back, near his right shoulder and in the pelvis area, with both bullets exiting from the front of his body, according to DCIP. Occupation forces then reportedly shot another youth in the back who tried to reach Odeh to render aid. Israeli soldiers blocked an ambulance from reaching Odeh for 15 minutes. When medics were finally able to reach him, he had no signs of life. Odeh was taken to Rafidia hospital in Nablus, where he was pronounced dead.

The highest level of home care support for older Australians costs $52,000. This $1000 a week buys, on average, less than nine hours of support. There’s plenty of skimming going on by aged care providers, some of whom are the nation’s biggest corporatised charities. With the budget expected to boost the number of home care packages without demanding any oversight, providers will be rubbing their hands with glee. Dr Sarah Russell reports.

Morrison is right – but not for his vacuous rhetoric. Future generations will judge us on what we deliver. Just as they judge us today on what we do rather than whatever our government might say – and then pretend it didn’t say or try to crabwalk away from. The inaction of this government to honour its obligations to its citizens in its travel ban on those trapped in India – or its chicanery on energy or climate change, its betrayal of its stewardship, or duty of care of the planet for future generations, is an indictment of its motives to seek and hold power for its own sake and a travesty of democratic principle and responsibility to its people. It is also a declaration of moral bankruptcy.

Here he is on this Thursday’s show, using the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, or VAERS, which, as Matthew Chapman at Raw Story explained, “is not actually a database of vaccine injuries; it’s only a list of medical events reported as happening after a vaccine was administered, with no verification that the vaccine caused the event or even that the event was real.”

Fox News’ critical race theory obsession | Media Matters for America

Fox became a pipeline for attacks on the study of systemic racism

In its ongoing 11 month smear of critical race theory, Fox News has mentioned the topic no less than 552 times. Fox’s coverage began in the summer of 2020, focusing on schools attempting to fold anti-racism teachings into their curricula. First, Fox’s opinion side hosted Christopher Rufo, an anti-civil rights activist who has targeted critical race theory, and ginned up controversy over purposeful misreadings of the approach — before the network’s self-described “news” side took over to report on state attempts to ban the study of systemic racism in classrooms. The network’s coverage steadily climbed in 2021 and featured a massive spike in April, with 235 mentions in that month alone.

The Coalition is backing a gas plant that also runs on hydrogen. Is this the future or a folly? | Energy | The Guardian

The 316-MW Tallawarra B plant south of Wollongong in NSW is a peaking plant, designed to fire up when demand for electricity is high.

Climate science tells us the world will likely need negative emissions technology – drawing CO2 from the atmosphere – if it is to meet the objectives agreed in Paris six years ago. The emissions from the gas burned at the new plant will ultimately add to the CO2 in the atmosphere, and they are avoidable. To borrow a phrase, you cannot offset your way to zero.

‘War on woke’ pits corporate elites against conservative politicians

Culture war warriors don’t need to look at data. Their problem they aren’t just ‘alternative facts’

It was a remarkable day in politics when assistant attorney general Amanda Stoker, personally intervened to have ‘anti-racism’ removed from an Australian Human Rights Commission tender. She worried the term was associated with Critical Race Theory. Stoker had no beef with the idea that racism is something Australians should be against. So why oppose a theory that seeks to understand and address racism at a systemic level? The problem appeared to be that this theory is beholden to the bogeyman of the ‘woke revolution’. This incident reflects a growing political engagement in a ‘war on woke’ in Australia. The call to arms is issued from the bastions of right-wing conservatism. Sky News leads the way in claiming that every progressive cause, from climate action to anti-racism to feminism, signals a capitulation to woke ‘lefty lunacy’. Scott Morrison was not far behind when he attacked identity politics. All of this malarkey about gender, race and sexuality undermines morality, freedom and the Australian way, he proselytized.

This is how the world really sees Morrison’s Australia

Suddenly, I heard an Australian accent. On the screen I saw General Angus Campbell standing alongside a map of Australia with a line crossed through it, like a no-smoking sign, broadcasting the menacing messages of Operation Sovereign Borders. I cringed: while I was enjoying unconditional hospitality in my host’s country, an advertisement paid for by my tax dollars warned Sadikalar that he would never be welcome in mine. It was illustrative of a tendency of our government, particularly since the Coalition’s 2013 victory, to both figuratively and literally broadcast images of Australia to the world that diminish our standing.

Recently "freed" workers on a sugar plantation in the West Indies, 1849, their progress is watched by a white supervisor with a whip.

The current blizzard of stories about a “worker shortage” across the U.S. may seem as though it’s about this peculiar moment, as the pandemic fades. Restaurants in Washington, D.C., contend that they’re suffering from a staffing “crisis.” The hospitality industry in Massachusetts says it’s experiencing the same disaster. The governor of Montana plans to cancel coronavirus-related additional unemployment benefits funded by the federal government, and the cries of business owners are being heard in the White House. In reality, though, this should be understood as the latest iteration of a question that’s plagued the owning class for centuries: How can they get everyone to do awful jobs for them for awful pay?

The insane pinball game that masquerades as Coalition energy policy – » The Australian Independent Media Network

“The days of subsidies in energy are over, whether it is for coal, wind, solar, any of them,” the treasurer said. “That is the way I think you get the best functioning energy market with the lowest possible price for businesses and for households and that is what the national energy guarantee and our energy policies are designed to achieve.” Fast forward to this week when Keith Pitt, the minister for resources, water and northern Australia, blocked a loan for the Kaban green energy hub which had been approved by the Northern Australian Infrastructure Facility (Naif) in January. The blocked funding would have helped build a 157-megawatt windfarm and 100MW battery and included a 320km transmission line upgrade. Pitt’s reason for overruling the decision was that investment in “mature technologies” like wind and solar energy would be driven by the private sector whilst the government’s policy was to support dispatchable generation. I’m not sure what Mr Pitt thinks batteries are for.

How ‘socialism’ stopped being a dirty word for some voters – and started winning elections across America

The leftist Democratic Socialists of America, which helped congressional star Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez get elected in 2018, looks to be a big political player again in New York City’s 2021 municipal elections. The group has not yet endorsed anyone for mayor – the top prize in New York’s June 22 Democratic primaries. But all 51 city council seats are up for grabs this year, and the DSA has members running for six of them – including Queens public defender Tiffany Cabán and Brooklyn tenant activist Michael Hollingsworth. With two state senators and five representatives out of 213 lawmakers, the New York State Legislature already has the country’s largest DSA legislative caucus. These Democrats share a leftist platform that includes guaranteeing housing as a human right and ending mass incarceration The DSA has upended local politics in this Democratic stronghold, and its wins extend well beyond New York – into Virginia, Nevada and beyond. How did socialism jump from the fringes of American politics into its very center?

The result was every bit as dystopian as you’d imagine.

For Greying Geriatric Wealthy Countries, Immigrants are the Solution, not a “Crisis”

The second way out of Germany’s crisis would be through immigration. The country could throw open its doors to people from all over the world to take unwanted and unfilled jobs, pay taxes, and support the increasingly aging population. That is exactly what Germany did. The government of Angela Merkel, in 2015 and 2016, accepted over a million refugees from the Middle East and North Africa. Germany now has the fifth largest population of refugees in the world (after Turkey, Colombia, Pakistan, and Uganda). This headline-grabbing decision, five years later, has been a remarkable success. The million refugees have prospered, reports the Center for Global Development.

Labour shortage: Where’s the pay rise to find our workers?

Labour shortage

The AFR seems to report an employer moaning about the shortage of suitable labour as often as it does iron ore price rises. A lengthy feature last week rounded up a bunch of them under the angle: “By strangling immigration indefinitely, the Morrison government is placing politics above economic recovery. It’s a gamble that could backfire badly.” (The irony of using Neil Perry as the lede example, given the Rockpool Group’s wage theft record, seems to have been lost on the masthead.) The hospitality industry stories were much the same as a conversation I had on Tuesday night with the manager of a thriving Sunshine Coast restaurant. Yes, it was very hard to get staff. Some places were only opening five nights or less because of the labour shortage, people were putting in long hours, there weren’t the backpackers, the student visas. So had the restaurant increased its pay rates, was it paying more to entice staff from other establishments?
