“Elbowed and Hustled”: Australia’s Yellow Peril Problem – » The Australian Independent Media Network

With the babble about Cold War paranoia becoming a routine matter in Canberra, the treacherous ground for war with China is being bedded down and readied. The Yellow Peril image never truly dissipated from Australia’s politics. It was crucial in framing the first act of the newly born Commonwealth in 1901: The Immigration Restriction Act. Even as China was being ravaged and savaged by foreign powers and implosion, there was a fear that somewhere along the line, a reckoning would come. Charles Henry Pearson, a professor of history at King’s College London, penned his National Life and Character: a Forecast (1893) with fear in mind. The expansion of the West into all parts of the globe and its claims to progress would soon have to face a new reality: the threat posed by the “Black and Yellow races.” Pearson fastened on various developments. The population of China was booming. The Chinese diaspora, the same, making their presence felt in places such as Singapore. “The day will come and perhaps is not far distant, when the European observer will look round to see the globe girdled with a continuous zone of the black and yellow races, no longer too weak for aggression or under tutelag

Australians in India test negative after being blocked from returning home

And at least three of the Australians blocked from returning home on Saturday’s flight from New Delhi to Darwin, because they tested positive for COVID-19, have since tested negative for the virus. The two revelations raise serious questions about the medical screening process set up by Qantas and the federal government for the resumption of travel between India and Australia.

Lachlan Murdoch continues to lie to the advertising industry | Media Matters for America

While described as a lifestyle brand, Fox Nation is just another right-wing propaganda outlet

Fox Corp. CEO Lachlan Murdoch lied during his remarks yesterday at the media research firm MoffettNathanson’s 8th Annual Media & Communications Summit, casting the streaming service Fox Nation as a lifestyle brand when in fact it’s a vehicle for Fox News host Tucker Carlson’s white supremacy. Murdoch also claimed the network stands by its reporting despite the fact that it has repeatedly undermined its own “news”-side coverage of the election, and he dodged questions about a clash over Fox’s opinion side despite reportedly intervening personally to defend Carlson’s white nationalist talking points in prime time. This is the second time this week that Murdoch’s public strategizing ahead of the 2021 upfronts has obfuscated the crisis in which Fox finds itself as the network tries to sell advertising space for the upcoming broadcast calendar while continuing to push lies, bigotry, and misinformation. The violence that began at Jerusalem’s ancient holy sites is driven by a distinctly modern zeal | Yair Wallach | The Guardian

Palestinian medics evacuate a wounded person after clashes in Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa mosque compound on 10 May 2021.

In the last few years, Jewish supremacism has emerged as a hegemonic ideology that legitimises Israeli control over the entire country, from the river to the sea. For the Israeli radical right, Israel’s inability or unwillingness to take complete control over the Haram is a symptom of “weak sovereignty”. This frustration accentuates the theological insufficiency of the Wall – as the site of permanent ruin and absence – and turns the attention to the Temple Mount.

With diplomacy all but abandoned, Israel and the Palestinians are teetering on another war

In East Jerusalem, Israeli settlers have been trying to seize control of Palestinian homes in Sheikh Jarrah, a historic part of the city. They have resorted to the Israeli Supreme Court, which usually supports the government and settler line in matters relating to the occupied Palestinian territories. The court’s judgement was expected this week, but was deferred. Palestinians have also been complaining about draconian restrictions imposed on worshippers during Ramadan at the Haram al-Sharif, the area including the Al-Aqsa mosque and the Dome of the Rock (which is known to Jews as the Temple Mount).

A streak of light from a rocket blazes through a dark sky

The escalation began in Jerusalem during the month of Ramadan, in a series of provocations carried out by the Israeli occupation authorities. The first in this series was the decision to prevent Palestinians from gathering at Bab al-Amoud (Damascus Gate) in Jerusalem in late April. This sparked a series of protests which eventually forced Israel to rescind the order. Another – ongoing – provocation, which drew some international attention, is the expulsion orders pending against Palestinian families from their homes in Sheikh Jarrah that Israeli courts have granted to Israeli settlers. A third Israeli provocation was the storming of al-Aqsa mosque during prayers on the morning of Friday, 7 May. Israeli forces fired tear gas and rubber-coated metal bullets onto worshippers, resulting in over 200 injuries. In a fourth provocation, settlers announced that on 10 May they would march through Jerusalem to celebrate what they term Jerusalem Day. The intention was to march near al-Aqsa mosque. This march escalated into a fifth provocation on the morning of 10 May as, for the second time in a week, Israeli forces stormed al-Aqsa, attacking worshippers praying inside and ransacking the

Shooting Fish in a Barrel: Israel bombs Palestinian Refugees from Israel in Gaza, 50% of them Children

Israeli air strikes on the densely populated urban areas of the Gaza Strip had by Thursday evening killed 109 Palestinians, among them 28 children, and had wounded 621 persons. The Israeli Air Force deliberately destroyed some of Gaza’s taller buildings, alleging that the ruling Hamas party had offices in them. They gave advance warning so that families could leave their homes. But the huge bombs falling on a civilian city inevitably did damage also to nearby buildings and have left families homeless. Flying glass and debris injured noncombatants.

The Palestinian residents who I interviewed on Wednesday repeated what I was told by youth participating in the riots. Their problem isn’t with Jewish people, but with the settlers who have been coming in and taking over the city over the past several years with the mayor’s blessing, they said. “We have been living here for decades with religious and Jewish people, there are good neighborly relations, but they [the settlers] are coming for war,” said one of the Palestinian residents.

Facebook’s Secret Rules on Word “Zionist” Impede Criticism of Israel

Both Facebook and Instagram are facing allegations of censorship following the erratic, widespread removal of recent posts from pro-Palestinian users critical of the Israeli government, including those who documented instances of Israeli state violence. Mass violence has gripped Israel and Gaza since last week. Tensions kicked off amid Palestinian protests against planned evictions in occupied East Jerusalem to make way for Jewish settlers. Eventually, Israeli security forces stormed the Al Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem’s old city, one of the holiest sites in Islam. The Palestinian militant group Hamas responded with rocket fire aimed at Israel. Israel, in turn, unleashed massive aerial bombardments and artillery attacks against the occupied Palestinian Gaza Strip, reportedly leaving more than 120 people, including 20 children, dead. At least 900 Palestinians have been injured since Monday. Reports said that in Israel, seven people, including a soldier and a child, had died as a result of the violence, with more than 500 injured. “Facebook claims that their policy on the word ‘Zionist’ is about Jewish safety,” Dani Noble, an organizer with Jewish Voice for Peace who reviewed

Did Israel Exacerbate the situation in Gaza to shift attention from its Sheikh Jarrah evictions?

It seems it is the fate of Palestinians to face the worst of apartheid policies under Israel’s military occupation. Denial of rights, dispossessions, expulsions, evictions, ID confiscations, house demolitions, land grabs, airstrikes, tank shelling, targeted assassinations, warships, refugees, military occupation. These are terms among many others that Palestinians are used to hearing and using. The events at Al-Aqsa Mosque and Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood that happened in the past few days in the occupied holy city of Jerusalem is a reminder of the ethnic cleansing that has never stopped since 1948. Over 300 peaceful worshipers were injured by Israeli rubber bullets, stun grenades, and tear gas canisters. Anger was high as Israeli attacks and violations took place during the holy month of Ramadan while worshippers were praying.

Civil War? Palestinian-Israelis Join Protests en Masse for First time in Decades, as Squatter Militias Attack

The big surprise of the past week in Israel has been the outbreak of protests and solidarity with the Palestinian cause on the part of the Palestinian-Israelis in the country’s mixed cities such as Lod, Ramla and Acre. Sometimes called the “Arabs of 1948,” these are persons of Palestinian heritage with Israeli citizenship who were not ethnically cleansed in israel’s war for independence, and who make of 20% of the Israeli population. The Center for Palestinian Information writes that Israeli police have been shocked and dismayed as the usually docile population has taken to the streets, throwing stones and in some cases setting fires, in several Israeli cities. They are protesting in solidarity with the Palestinians of Jerusalem, and more recently, Gaza.

Seven ways the Coalition’s 2021 budget is blue — not pink

Lastly, while this Budget makes extra-legal assistance available for victims of domestic violence, they will need it, since, in a move condemned by judges and legal experts, the Family Court was abolished earlier this year. This Budget, unlike previous ones, recognises that women exist and appears to target them for special small relief measures that may be afforded other minority groups. Except, as Helen Dally Fisher from the Equality Rights Alliance points out, “…Women aren’t a special interest group, we are more than half the population”. This type of fiscal approach, then, intended to address the systemic inequality long-endured by the majority sex, is tokenism at best.

Now That They Don't Need 'Access', Media Admits Trump Lied

With a quick succession of headlines last week, the New York Times quietly unveiled a new chapter in its Trump coverage — the paper was suddenly calling out his lies. “In Turning on Liz Cheney, G.O.P. Bows to Trump’s Election Lies,” a Times headline read. The next day, the Times published, “Cheney’s Replacement Repeats Trumps Lies as Party Looks Ahead.” (In a nostalgic twist, the online headline for that article referred to “False Claims.”) And the following day, a print subhead for a front-page Times article read, “Party Is Banking On Pushing Elections Lies.” The good news: Beltway journalists no longer seeking access to the Trump White House are now detailing his “lies” in news coverage: • “The 15 Most Notable Lies of Donald Trump’s Presidency” (CNN) • “Legacy of Lies — How Trump Weaponized Mistruths During His Presidency” (ABC News) Yesterday, the Associated Press reported, “Allegiance to a lie has become a test of loyalty to Donald Trump and a means of self-preservation for Republicans.”

Canceling the anti-insurrectionists in the GOP proves Republicans never cared about “free speech” | Salon.com

main article image

Despite all the preening about “free speech” on the right, the truth is complaints about “cancel culture” have always been code for “conservatives can say whatever terrible things they want, and liberals can shut up about it.” And while play-acting as the victims of censorship because liberals mock or criticize them, Republicans have been busy actually silencing free speech: from demanding that athletes be fired for kneeling during the national anthem to, memorably, Donald Trump ordering the tear-gassing of peaceful protesters in Lafayette Park. While conservatives whine about oppression because people call them “racist” on Twitter, they are actually using complaints about “wokeness” as an excuse for the literal government censorship of discourse that acknowledges the reality of racism, as Michelle Goldberg of the New York Times chronicled. That’s conservatism, of course: Always projecting their own sins onto their liberal opponents.

Israeli air strike collapses 13-storey housing block in Gaza

An Israeli air strike has destroyed a 13-storey residential block in the Gaza Strip, triggering a Hamas threat to fire 130 rockets into Tel Aviv and its suburbs. Israel threatened yet more air strikes and has tanks massed on the border of Gaza in the worst escalation in violence since 2019. Israel last invaded Gaza in 2014 to stop rocket attacks. Video footage showed three plumes of thick, black smoke rising from the tower, its upper storeys still intact as they fell. The tower houses an office used by the political leadership of Gaza’s Hamas rulers. Electricity in the area around the building went out and residents were using flashlights.

Israeli Repression and Land Grabs, and the Palestinian Protests in Jerusalem

Violence has become a permanent feature of Ramadan for the people of occupied Palestine. The first day of the fasting month this year began with the Israeli army breaking locks and cutting the wires to the loudspeakers at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem to silence the evening calls to prayer. In yet another provocative move, Israel allowed only 10,000 Palestinians to enter Jerusalem from the West Bank. On the first Friday in the month, only 70,000 Muslims were able to pray at Al-Aqsa Mosque; on one Friday in 2019, there were 200,000 worshippers in the Noble Sanctuary. That was not unusual.

Alan Kohler: The Coalition’s (sort of) conversion to debt and deficits

The budget measures for 2022-23 announced on budget night total $24.7 billion, half of which is the extension of full expensing for small business ($10.9 billion) and the loss carry-back extension ($3.2 billion). The other big-ticket item in that year is aged care ($4.6 billion). So, 185 per cent of the estimated improvement in the bottom line for 2022-23 was budgeted to be spent in the budget. Exactly the same goes for 2023-24: The pre-budget improvement in the deficit would have been $15.8 billion; measures announced on Tuesday – $29.3 billion, or 185 per cent of the gain. In other words, the Coalition has had a conversion towards spending money and accepting deficits, but mainly in two and three years’ time. By the way, there’s an interesting increase in the mysterious item called “decisions taken but not yet announced”, which I’ve always taken to mean “secret war chest”. It’s gone from $6.6 billion over four years to $10.3 billion. There must be an election coming.

Federal budget 2021: Josh Frydenberg, Scott Morrison’s good effort at marketing misses main chance

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg and Prime Minister Scott Morrison in the House of Representatives.

Politically, this budget had to offer a convincing response to the report of the royal commission on aged care. Reports have suggested fixing the broken system would take extra spending of about $10 billion a year. He settled for spending an extra $3.5 billion a year. Major patch-up at best. The scandals will continue. Politically, Morrison had to make this a women-friendly budget, to prove he valued women’s contribution to the economy and remove impediments to their economic security. Making childcare free  would have been a big help to young families, as well as greatly increasing employment. That would have cost about $2 billion a year. Morrison settled for $600 million a year, or one childcare-using family in four by excluding the great majority, who have only one child in care.

The truth is, at this stage the economy is still running on the stored heat of last year’s massive budgetary stimulus, much of which has still to be spent. The purpose of public-sector stimulus is to get the private sector – households and businesses – up to ignition point, so it keeps going under its own steam.

That hasn’t happened yet. So the purpose of the further stimulus in this year’s budget is to keep the kick-starting going until the private sector’s engine gets going.

Cuts, spends, debt: what you need to know about the budget at a glance

After twenty years of rhetoric from both sides of politics focusing on getting back to surplus, this year’s budget continues pandemic spending in the hope of getting the economy back on track as the pandemic starts to settle. The projected deficit is $161 billion for 2021-22, but rather than tackling this in the next four years, the government’s focus is instead on payments and long-term serviceable debt.

Their concern is that the “true lender” rule—one of the last moves by the Trump-era Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, a federal office that supervises nationally chartered banks—upends more than a century of legal precedent to make it easy for non-bank financial institutions, like payday lenders or fintech companies, to evade state-level interest limits, lending at sky-high rates and trapping low-income customers in debt.
