‘Real venom’: federal government extends NSW flood relief after pressure from local MPs | NSW and Queensland floods 2022 | The Guardian

Liberal MP Catherine Cusack at Parliament House in Sydney

Morrison NEVER LEADS from the front. He has to be dragged shoved pushed threatened to act. His own party is sick of him opening up a window of opportunity not only for the opposition but for an even bigger loser Peter Dutton.

The delay in extending the funding prompted an outpouring of criticism from Liberal and National MPs in NSW, with one upper house Liberal party MP, Catherine Cusack, announcing her intention to resign from politics altogether, telling Guardian Australia her decision was not a protest but “me not wanting to fight the machine any more”. Scott Morrison last week announced extra financial support would be available for people in Lismore, Richmond Valley and Clarence Valley local areas. Those regions all sit in the federal seat of Page, held by the Nationals. But other local government areas including Ballina, Byron and Tweed – all located in the electorate of Richmond, held by Labor – were initially excluded from receiving the extra funds. That prompted outrage from Liberal and National MPs in the NSW government.

Justice for whistleblower Bernard Collaery is as far away as ever – Michael West Media

Bernard Collaery featured

This Australian government has been acting as Putin does.

Top-secret evidence will be allowed in the prosecution of Bernard Collaery, the man who exposed Australian spying in East Timor, an ACT Supreme Court judge has ruled. Greg Barns examines the implications. Here’s a test. You have been charged with serious criminal offences and are facing a trial. The prosecution says it can use secret evidence against you. Evidence you and your lawyers are unable to see. Instead the court will appoint a special advocate who can look at the secret evidence and represent your interests. Which country are we in? Russia? China? Or in the United States with its infamous Guantanamo Bay military justice system.

Australia sanctions two Russian oligarchs

government sanctions

Despite Morrison’s efforts to shut down the ABC critical media pressure, push, shove and “facts” do work. It’s why the ABC was established and why Morrison wants it gone. However on March 16th TND reported Morrison’s conspicuous oversight in not sanctioning the two Russians who had a 20% interest in an aluminum mfg plant conjointly owned with friends Rio Tinto. Today that’s been rapidly reversed after that fact was announced. Was ScoMo his usual slow self or caught out?

Two Russian oligarchs with ties to Australian aluminium manufacturing have been sanctioned by the federal government. Oleg Deripaska and Viktor Vekselberg are named in a new sanctions instrument alongside nine Russian banks and a sovereign wealth fund and the entire Russian finance ministry. The Putin allies have significant stakes in Rusal International, which owns 20 per cent of the Queensland Alumina Limited refinery near Gladstone in a joint deal with Rio Tinto. The plant is one of the world’s largest, and hugely profitable amid a global shortage of aluminium and near-record prices. Until Friday, Australia had been conspicuous in not sanctioning either man, despite other Western nations imposing restrictions on them, and Prime Minister Scott Morrison pledging to stay in “lockstep” with allies.

Fighting Putin with Putinism

The tragic irony is that these measures mirror the authoritarian steps taken both during and before this war by Putin, who is quite rightly viewed in the West as a dangerous autocrat contemptuous of basic freedoms. Long before this war, Putin had the very kind of tech censorship regime that Western politicians and commentators demand more and more for their own societies, where the government pressures tech companies or circumvents them to remove or discourage online speech it doesn’t like. Since it began, the Russian government has passed a variety of laws against what it calls “false information” about the war and disseminating “fake” details about its forces’ actions. It’s banned, blocked, and shut down independent news outlets that contradict official talking points, banned Instagram, and barred access to foreign media outlets for their “deliberate and systematic circulation of materials containing false information.” And of course, it has paid TikTok influencers to spread its preferred narrative about the invasion.

Will Ukraine Write the Alt-Right’s Epitaph? | The Smirking Chimp

Some of the greatest offenders—Marine Le Pen in France, Matteo Salvini in Italy, Hungary’s Viktor Orbán, the UK’s Nigel Farage—have spent the last three weeks trying to reinvent themselves as staunch defenders of Ukraine. A select few have doubled down on their idiocy, chief among them Thierry Baudet in the Netherlands and Tucker Carlson from the land of Fox News. White nationalists aside, Putin’s once formidable alliance of global sympathizers has been hemorrhaging support by the day. Putin’s overreach in Ukraine may ultimately prove his political demise. But has the alt-right, in losing a massive political gamble, also earned a return ticket to the fringes from whence it came?

US would be on firmer Ground declaring Putin a War Criminal if George W. Bush had been Tried

NPR reports that on Wednesday, President Biden called Russian dictator Vladimir Putin a “war criminal” for the first time. The report notes that this outburst is unusual for Biden, who prizes personal diplomacy and must know that such a charge would make it more difficult to negotiate with Putin down the road. When reporters pressed Biden on the matter, the president said, “I think he is a war criminal.”

PR people like to crow they write most of the newspapers. Problem is, they’re correct, but now it’s think tanks too.

Guardian Australia’s analysis today by Katharine Murphy: “Rising US isolationism means Australia must become more resilient and autonomous, think-tank warns” was based on a research paper by the University of Sydney’s United States Studies Centre (USSC).

The story by did not reveal that while also being funded by the United States Department of State and the Australian government, the think tank also receives funding from weapon makers Northrop Grumman Australia and Thales.

Duncan Lewis, the former director-general of ASIO, has also been appointed as a non-resident fellow. On the board is Dr Brendan Nelson, president of Boeing Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific. Mick Mulvaney, the former chief of staff in the Trump administration, is also a non-resident fellow.

As reported by the uni’s student newspaper Honi Soit the University of Sydney’s Chancellor Belinda Hutchinson also acts as the chairman of Thales Australia, the local arm of French global weapons manufacturer Thales Group.

Crack Down on Russian Oligarchs by Cracking Down on US Tax Havens | The Smirking Chimp

What has Morrison done? He’s left two Russian Oligarch’s investments in Australia alone. In fact he simply ignored the Panama and Pandora papers when they came out. Money laundering and tax evasion are still a hugely lucrative business for the banks and accounting firms in Australia.

The first step in fixing the hidden wealth system is ownership transparency—requiring disclosure of beneficial ownership in real estate, trusts, and companies and corporations. Cities like Los Angeles are exploring municipal-level disclosure of real estate ownership so they can know who is buying the neighborhood. But we should sign a spotlight on the enabling wealth defense industry. Days after the release of the Pandora Papers, U.S. lawmakers introduced the ENABLERS Act, to require such attorneys, wealth managers, real estate professionals and art dealers to report suspicious activity. The attention on Russian oligarchs has revived interest in this legislation. If the U.S. wants to clamp down on Russian oligarchs, the first step is to get our own house in order.

OMG gamergate employed the strategies Carlson copies today. They did it to dis feminists, in the gaming community back in 2008. Steve Bannon applied the same strategies and linked them to e-zine Breitbart and then in 2017 along came QAnon who adopted the same tactics and applied them to conspiracy message boards where fact based narratives weren’t needed only attack “swarms” were.

Should we be surprised that devotees like Alex Jones’s Info Wars,Bannon and Murdoch linked up and applied the same tactics to their business models? Trump certainly loved the “swarm” and the gift given him by Bannon and became a Twitter devotee. Moderate ex-Republicans like the Lincoln Project claim the Right-Wing have adopted and applied the theories of Cultural Marxism to bring down American Democracy.Where if you change the cultural narrative and you’ll change the course of politics. Marshal McCluhan predicted it in the 70s and it’s digital age on steroids, psychos have taken control of the message and facts aren’t necessary. It’s why Bannon has been called a Leninist by once Republicans and now anti-Trumpists the Lincoln Project. The simply want to bring down the structure of government in America. So shouldn’t Murdoch, Carlson Ingraham and Fox News be too? Along with Bannon, Trump and and a cast of others they gave birth to “Fake News”. Murdoch made opinion, factless narrative and called it News and it’s why Tucker Carlson is now Putin’s boy and a 5th columnist in the USA today.

How Will Russia’s War in Ukraine End?

El-Tayyab told The Intercept it is crucial that Congress not implement Russian sanctions by statute, because doing so would later require a vote to lift them. Very few lawmakers would be willing to cast such a vote, and the failure would deprive Zelenskyy and the Biden administration of the flexibility to lift sanctions amid negotiations. “If the Biden administration shows it’s willing to lift sanctions if peace talks are successful, and champions possibilities for compromise as they emerge, it can positively contribute to ending the conflict and suffering of millions of innocent Ukrainians,” El-Tayyab said.

Michael Pascoe: Scott Morrison set precedent for carbon levy

carbon levy

Doublespeak : “This isn’t a Carbon Tax”, Just as the  “No cuts to the ABC”. Morrison the Ad man spends more time with his spin doctors, playing with words than he actually does doing the things he was elected to do. Because actually doing things might seem as if he’s riding on the coattails of the ALP

There is a recent precedent for the federal government to introduce a $1-a-tonne levy on fossil fuels – and it was set by Scott Morrison. As Treasurer in 2017, Mr Morrison successfully legislated a new industry-specific tax he forecast to collect $6.2 billion over four years. Of course he did not call it a “tax” – governments are rather allergic to that word, much preferring fee/levy/surcharge/toll or whatever other euphemism comes to mind. In this case, it was called the Major Bank Levy.

The first national project to record mass killings on the Australian frontier has found that around half of all massacres of Aboriginal people were carried out by police and other government forces. Many others were perpetrated by settlers acting with tacit approval of the state. The final findings of the eight-year long Colonial Frontier Massacres Digital Map Project show that conflict was widespread and most massacres were planned, in a deliberate attempt to eradicate Aboriginal people and Aboriginal resistance to the colonisation of the country.

Dismay at the decision was expressed by Amnesty International’s Deputy Research Director for Europe, Julia Hall. “The Supreme Court has missed an opportunity to clarify the UK’s acceptance of deeply flawed diplomatic assurances against torture. Such assurances are inherently unreliable and leave people at risk of severe abuse upon extradition or other transfer.” The next stage in this diabolical torment of the WikiLeaks founder involves remitting the case to Westminster Magistrates’ Court, which will only serve a ceremonial role in referring the decision to the Home Secretary, Priti Patel. Only the most starry-eyed optimists will expect extradition to be barred. (Patel is fixated with proposed changes to the UK Official Secrets Act that will expansively criminalise journalists and whistleblowers who publish classified information.) The defence will do their best in submissions to Patel ahead of the decision, but it is likely that they will have to seek judicial review.

Over the past two weeks, Koch Industries has distinguished itself as one of the few major corporations to remain in Russia as the country’s president, Vladimir Putin, continues to carry a full-scale military invasion of Ukraine. Nearly 400 companies – such as McDonald’s, Starbucks, BP, Deloitte, Ford, GM, Hilton, and Netflix – have suspended their operations in or divested from the Russian economy.

Still, Koch Industries is not the only laggard. Companies like Halliburton, AbbVie, Bosch, Cargill, Subway, White & Case, Accor, and Amway have apparently refused to sever ties. Many of them have argued that breaking away from the country would be most punishing to Russian citizens, especially amid crippling U.S. sanctions.

Putin’s brazen manipulation of language is a perfect example of Orwellian doublespeak

Doublespeak has always been Scott Morrison’s primary weapon. However he applies it so badly it simply comes out as a lie. Taxes aren’t taxes, they’re “efficiency reviews”. “Keeping Australians Safe” is all about the  creation of fear enabling increased control over things that aren’t even happening.  Giving us freedom is Morrison’s excuse for doing nothing “not holding the hose” etc etc.  “On the water matters” was his classic response for ” not answering” questions. In fact Trump Putin and Morrison are the same all doublespeakers. Anthony Albanese or Albo on the other hand has a history of calling a spade a shovel faces and interprets the facts and gets on with the job when either in government or in opposition. He believes consensus negotiated decisions are part and parcel of a progressive democracy

Doublespeak is a tool in the arsenal of tyranny. It is one of Putin’s weapons of choice, as it is for many authoritarians and would-be authoritarians around the world. As Orwell warned: “Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing.”The Conversation

Top Putin Propagandist Says the Ukraine War Is Just the Beginning – Mother Jones

A key champion in the Russian media of Vladimir Putin’s illegal attack on Ukraine served up a troubling threat on Monday: This war will go beyond Ukraine. State television host Vladimir Solovyov is well-known as a fanatical pro-Putin propagandist and a top cheerleader for the war with Ukraine. He claims the Russians are acting in self-defense and liberating a Ukraine that poses an existential threat to Russia. Last month he railed against sanctions imposed on Russia, perhaps because they affected his ownership of villas in the Lake Como region of Italy. This week, he said that the sanctions should be answered with nuclear strikes, exclaiming, “I still think that those who took our money should be told, you have 24 hours to unfreeze our funds, or else we’ll send you what you know we’ve got. Your choice. Tactical or strategic, take a pick. You took our money, you’re the thieves, our talk is short with you: a bullet to the head.”

Paul Bongiorno: Not being Scott Morrison gets better for Anthony Albanese

Scott Morrison PM was asked, some 18 months ago, what his over 30 year relationship with the Stewart family amounted to? Tim Stewart and his son Jesse are central and religiously active Pentacostalists and active members of the radical extreme-right global internet conspiracy group QAnon. Tim Stewart has even been banned from Twitter and other social media sites. He has even hosted activist members from the US and Gold Coast at his home. It was suggested his wife didn’t know her husband and son were members of QAnon while living with the discussion group in the house.

Morrison our PM has strict security, bodyguards and so are we meant to believe that neither the AFP or ASIO even knew or warned him? That Morrison didn’t simply shrug their concerns off? Questions were tabled at a Senate Estimates Comittee by Penny Wong some 18 months ago and were put on record by Matthias Corman but have never been answered. In fact, refused to be answered despite Tim Stewart boasting about his influence over his bestie Scott Morrison the PM to QAnon. How his words “ritual abuse” were going to be included in a Morrison address as proof, and sure enough they were.

Morrison today has the gall to suggest Albo is influenced by the Chinese  who have him in their pocket. Compared with QAnon, whose involvement in the Jan 6th riots in the US was plain to see. Their insane conspiracies pushed globally and Morrison’s personal, up close relationship with two of their most radical members who knew beforehand what was in his speech speaks to the fact we can trust Anthony Albanese blindly but can’t trust Morrison in the slightest. Albanese is an open book Morrison is totally closed with only a photo-manufactured veneer. He’s even got a trail of non disclosure agreements as part and parcel of his history,

The latest Newspoll is merely confirmation of the feedback they are getting in their electorates, best summed up by the comment “Morrison’s lost the mob. They have given up listening to him”. Labor has had an extraordinary run in the poll this year. It has led all four by 10 points or more – landslide territory if repeated at the election. Of course, borrowing from Italian opera, it’s not over until the fat lady sings, or more pertinently, till the last vote is cast.

Almost a million are working multiple jobs with no benefits. While workers have gone  backwards Corporations and shareholder stocks boomed and only benefited less than 10% of the pop in real terms.

Australia’s soaring cost of living is outstripping wage increases, leaving the average worker more than $800 worse off in 2021, the steepest cut in real terms for more than 20 years, according to Australian Council of Trade Unions president, Michele O’Neil.

Voter sentiment will shift pre-poll: PM – Michael West Media

Let’s not forget 2013 post-GFC Australia was voted the “World’s Best Economy” and Wayne Swan “The World’s Best Treasurer” all under a Gillard/ALP Government. They saved us from the onslaught of the GFC recession the rest of the world suffered.  Even before Covid-19  the LNP had doubled our National Debt and they have more than tripled it since, plunging our economic standing in comparison with the rest of the world. The spring back they call a “recovery” after a bungee jump dive is now being touted by Frydenberg as the best on the planet. These assholes sure know how to strategise, blatantly spin and lie to the Australian people. Morrison has  expanded that department.

Wages have shrunk, fallen 3.5% while Corporate wealth has risen and grown 13.5%. More Australians are in multiple jobs and have suffered wage-theft and Super theft amounting to billions of dollars while Morrison’s has done nothing but reward corporations with tax cuts, JobKeeper when they were already making profit through Covid not a loss. Taxpayer money they don’t have to pay back which also ran into the billions.

Morrison’s Bullshit Compared with the Facts

Speaking on Sky News on Monday night, he said the next three to ten years would be tough as Australia recovers from the damage inflicted by the coronavirus. “It’s going to be a tough next 10 years, next three years and you need a government to keep (the economy) in strong shape,” he said.

“What’s important is you take the fiscal settings back to an after-pandemic normal, and that’s what we’re looking to do.”

Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese has drawn level with Mr Morrison as preferred prime minister in the latest Newspoll, while Labor is still ahead of the coalition on a two-party preferred basis at 55 per cent to 45 per cent.

While the government is behind in the polls, Mr Morrison said he wasn’t concerned, adding voters would soon move from “sentiment to real choices”. “When it comes to these things, Australians will focus on these things, and the federal election is always close,” he said.

The sector has prevented us from transitioning to renewables back in the 20th century when we could have done so with little pain; the time has come to make them compensate us for the suffering that has only just begun.

Five years on, Snowy 2.0 emerges as a $10 billion white elephant

The LNP delivering yet another FAILURE. A Herd of White Elephants,

The nation-building vision was for a big battery to be added to the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme. It was to be completed in four years (that is, by last year) at a cost of $2 billion without any taxpayer subsidy, bring down electricity prices, generate renewable energy and incur minimal environmental impact on Kosciuszko National Park. Inspiring stuff. But not one of these grand claims has turned out to be true. Worse, Australian taxpayers and NSW electricity consumers will be up for billions of dollars in subsidies and increased electricity costs, all while Kosciuszko is trashed. Let’s have a quick recap.

The War in Ukraine Shows That Europe Could Help Refugees if It Really Wanted To

In Europe, the volunteers welcoming Ukrainian refugees are often the same people attacked for aiding refugees in the Mediterranean. That’s not just hypocritical, it’s inhumane — we should welcome all migrants fleeing war and terror.

Helplessness in the Face of Evil | The Smirking Chimp

It’s like watching a three-hundred-pound bully beat up a kid half his size, for no reason — bloodying the poor kid, pulverizing him. Yet you don’t dare try to stop the mayhem because the bully has a gun that he’ll use on you if you intervene. You look for police, but there are none.

Comrades in Crazy: Top 4 Putin Trolls in the Republican Party, starting with Tucker Carlson

Vladimir Putin is admired on the American Right as no foreign leader has been since Adolf Hitler. Today’s counterparts of Charles Lindbergh and Father Coughlin are arguably more organized, and they have the advantage of prominent perches in both old and new media.

Michale West Media-The South’s Ideas Man

The big political news story over the weekend was the Prime Minister’s faux-announcement through the newspapers that he is considering curing the fuel excise to alleviate the stress of rapidly rising petrol prices.

However, as is often the case with the federal policy cycle the idea was first brought to parliament by South Australian independent senator Rex Patrick. In an interview with MWM, Patrick raised his policy idea of relieving Australians of $6 billion a year in fuel excise costs.

Patrick has been bringing the policy of a 50% reduction in fuel excise costs to parliament since February, when fuel prices began to rise.

Facts, Not Blind Ideology | The Smirking Chimp

“In 1959, the BBC asked [Bertrand] Russell, [public intellectual, historian, social critic, political activist and Nobel laureate] what advice he would give future generations. He answered: ‘When you are studying any matter or considering any philosophy, ask yourself only what are the facts and what is the truth that the facts bear out. Never let yourself be diverted either by what you wish to believe or by what you think would have beneficent social effects if it were believed, but look only and solely at the facts.”

Ideology is not a bad thing. It’s of value, very important really. Each of us as individuals should have a fact-based and justice-seeking worldview that guides us as we go through life, day by day. But when that worldview doesn’t fit with the facts, as history and our lives develop, it’s time to make some practical and ideological adjustments, look at things more closely. Ideology grounded in facts, not blind ideology, is what we must strive for.

Crown v Shannon: bigwigs off the hook, small fish fried – Michael West Media

ASIC, Crown Resorts

This isn’t splashed across the front pages of our MSM why? It certainly however indicates their right-wing, top-down propaganda bias. Morrison’s promised ICAC has been discarded and a stained promise remains. Australia’s international corruption index has blown out and the pigs are ripping the guts out of everything that remains. Super and wage theft have been gouged, while workers and their families have lost billions. $8 companies were given contracts that now values them at $340M. Mates have jobs doing sweet FA and earn $600K and grants well we saw the grants they came and went in some cases like Bridget McKenzie.

Nine years ago we were voted best economy on the planet and our Treasurer then voted the world’s best and we had just faced the GFC and won governed by the Gillard ALP. Bills were passedbut then along came 9 years of listening to “nope nope nope” of LNP government with Frydenberg still telling us we are the worlds best economy when the world says we are not.

Our privately owned MSM Murdoch the largest is proving to be the Australian equivalent of Russian State Media a propaganda machine loved by Putin. It might well be criticizing Scott Morrison but it sure as hell isn’t criticizing the L-NP for dragging this country down economically or reputationally on every social metric. They are after all the worlds best promisers who do nothing and when and if they do it’s so late its a useless token gesture. Yes Morrison promises to make the NBN the best in the world and liberate Christians from discrimination. What criticism there is in our MSM, is minimal and isn’t calling for a necessary change of government. Quite the opposite in fact, they are still branded the best economic managers by corporate Australia while government debt blew out to almost $1Tr and filled the pockets of their donors. The truth is staring us in the face. Are we better off under a Morrison/LNP than we were under a Gillard lead ALP?  Is our material Economy, Health, Education, Wealth, Housing and Welfare better? Have Corruption, Broken Promises, Discrimination, Racism, and Climate action improved? Let’s be the honest judges and not simply accept the word of the worlds worst salesman!

One guy prosecuted for allegedly running a company while bankrupt, ten Crown directors off scot free for washing $70bn through casinos for Chinese Triads, drug and sex traffickers and other assorted criminals. One rule for rich and powerful, another for the rest. Michael West reports on the world of deluxe double standards.
