Former emergency services chiefs slam govt after floods warning

Former emergency services bosses have blasted the Morrison government for failing to act on warnings before this year’s deadly and devastating floods in New South Wales and Queensland, echoing the lead up to the catastrophic Black Summer bushfires. Emergency Leaders for Climate Action want the federal government to cut Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions by 75 per cent by 2030 and set a net zero by 2035 goal.

Climate change has created two very typical states of environmental disasters in the Australian landscape – » The Australian Independent Media Network

To have these federally funded bodies respond to these emergencies far faster than this government and ADF have reacted to people in need in Lismore, Coraki, Girards Hill, Southgate, Mullumbimby, Picton and many others, we need one more change. We need a federal government that will not simply announce its intentions without any measurable, functional outcomes or run off overseas or hide from public scrutiny, but act promptly to produce results in infrastructure and finance in the towns that will preserve our communities. But, unfortunately, that government is not our current incumbent, whose leader only now, weeks after the start of the floods, while visiting Lismore, indicated an “intention” to declare a “State of Emergency”.

Palestinian Refugee Families expelled from Israel can’t Come Home, but 100K Ukrainians Admitted

The majority of the World’s Jews shun the call of a return to Israel

The Jewish Agency’s acting chairman Yaakov Hagoel called the Ukrainian Jews’ arrival: “An important contribution to the development of the State of Israel, which today welcomes you with open arms and brotherly love.” A political admission that is completely void of the humanitarian veneer that fails to shroud Israel’s colonising intent. This means that Jewish Ukrainian refugees choosing Israel must be acknowledged as settlers – active participants in the Zionist colonial project with rights that exceed those of the Palestinians living under colonial apartheid. Meanwhile, the international community keeps silent about decades of hypocrisy over the Palestinian right of return – purposely inherently flawed to prevent Palestinians from ever claiming their place in historical Palestine.

Leaked Kremlin Memo to Russian Media: It Is “Essential” to Feature Tucker Carlson – Mother Jones

On March 3, as Russian military forces bombed Ukrainian cities as part of Vladimir Putin’s illegal invasion of his neighbor, the Kremlin sent out talking points to state-friendly media outlets with a request: Use more Tucker Carlson. “It is essential to use as much as possible fragments of broadcasts of the popular Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who sharply criticizes the actions of the United States [and] NATO, their negative role in unleashing the conflict in Ukraine, [and] the defiantly provocative behavior from the leadership of the Western countries and NATO towards the Russian Federation and towards President Putin, personally,” advises the 12-page document written in Russian. It sums up Carlson’s position: “Russia is only protecting its interests and security.” The memo includes a quote from Carlson: “And how would the US behave if such a situation developed in neighboring Mexico or Canada?”

How insensitive can Scott Morrison get – to visit the people of the Northern Rivers of NSW and offer a flood relief package of over $350 million and on the next day release the news that his Government would increase the Australian Defence Forces funding to the tune of $38 billion over a period of twenty years.

There can be no doubt that Morrison is now widely regarded to be the most despised PM in living memory – he is now doubling his “spin” and cynically backpedalling on many issues because he (and we) know that if there is any justice in this world, Morrison should face absolute annihilation in the forthcoming federal election! But what is the truly wondrous thing about the Age of Warne, as it should be known? No, it’s not the glamour he attached to the art of spin bowling. His successors around the world have only proved what a one-off he was. That wonderful thing is the way cricket has grown spectacularly in popularity and participation with girls and women. It’s a pity it took 100 years. How many girls were inspired by Warne’s subtle skills? Yes, the on-field ones. For all his silly, to use the horrid word ”blokey” carry-on, all the moronic antics, he was a brilliant ambassador for the game. If miracles exist, there’s one here. Valentino would have been proud.

Fox News pushes “energy independence” 329 times in first two weeks of Russia’s war in Ukraine, shaping coverage of energy policy on cable news | Media Matters for America

energy_independence_fox.png

Angus Taylor gets his statements straight from Fox News and echoes them here. Liberal MP’s don’t do very much in the way of creative thinking about what might be the best for Australia do they?

From the outset of Russia’s latest invasion of Ukraine, Fox News has been using the conflict as a pretext to agitate for the production of more oil and gas here in the U.S., which the network’s personalities and guests claim will lead to American “energy independence” – an outdated concept that right-wing media use as shorthand for increasing our reliance on domestic sources of fossil fuels, particularly during moments of global instability. In the first two weeks of the conflict from February 24 through March 9, “energy independence” or “energy security” were mentioned across Fox News programming at least 329 times, illustrating how pervasive the fossil fuel industry talking point is within the right-wing media landscape.

Gigi Hadid’s Palestine Pledge and ‘Anti-Palestinianism’: The Great Vogue Controversy

When Influencers are politically and economically influenced like Vogue  they set their standards extremely low.  The Murdoch business model is proof.

The Arab News reports that Vogue did an instagram posting about model Gigi Hadid’s pledge to donate her fall earnings to Ukraine and Palestine, but erased the Palestine part. The erasure attracted widespread condemnation from progressives, and Vogue has now amended its Instagram posting to restore the model’s pledge to help Palestinians, as well. Vogue’s erasure of Palestinians from its Instagram notice has been seen as part of a pattern in which Palestine as a subject has been made taboo by pro-Israeli right wing nationalists, who deny Palestinian rights to peoplehood and statehood just as Vladimir Putin denies Ukrainians rights to peoplehood and statehood. The Israeli Right insists that all Palestinian territory actually belongs to Israel and that Palestinians can never be allowed to have their own state.

Government denies that flood funding allocation is ‘political’

Thousands of flood-stricken residents in the NSW northern rivers region have been cut out of flood relief payments, forcing the government to deny allegations the emergency funding has been allocated politically.

Following catastrophic flooding, Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Thursday announced a plan to provide two additional $1000 Commonwealth disaster payments to residents in the council districts of Richmond, Lismore and Clarence Valley.

But three other council areas in the region, all struck by the floods, were not granted the two additional payments: Tweed, Byron and Ballina shires.

NSW floods: Morrison’s most fatal flaw on show in flood response

“Australia is getting hard to live in because of these disasters,” Scott Morrison said earlier this week.

Don’t mention the Climate or the Change

“I think it is just an obvious fact,” declared the Prime Minister this week as he toured flood-ravaged Lismore, that “Australia is getting hard to live in because of these disasters”. What a frankly astonishing admission that is. How unvarnished. It isn’t relative or euphemistic. It isn’t “Australia is being affected by climate change”, or “we’re facing more natural disasters”. It’s absolute. “Getting hard to live in” has a ring of resignation about it. It’s like given the choice, humans would really rather live somewhere else.

Sky News and The Guardian, in their coverage of this topic, also incorrectly referred to Independent candidates as “Climate 200” candidates. Whilst there is certainly nothing negative about receiving financial support from Climate 200, they are not a political party. If the mainstream media is going to label candidates receiving funding from Climate 200 as “Climate 200” candidates, they should start referring to Liberal and Labor candidates as Ampol or Santos candidates for fairness and consistency. At least there are no strings attached to donations from Climate 200.

Putin called America’s hypocritical support of Israel’s illegal occupation CONTEMPT of International Law. He, Trump and Israel are all hypocrites.

In 2019, the Trump administration made the United States the only foreign country to recognize Israel’s annexation of the Golan Heights, which Israel seized from Syria in the 1967 War. Tel Aviv University Law Professor Eliav Lieblich noted that the decision – which contradicted a unanimous United Nations Security Council resolution supported by the US itself – constituted a “significant departure from the bedrock legal prohibition of unilateral annexation.” Yale Law School’s Oona Hathaway called the move “outrageous and potentially destabilizing to the postwar international order.” The Russian government called it an “indication of the contempt that Washington shows for the norms of international law.”

Besides Putin wants the Ukraine for the economic benefit of Russia too.

Foreign Policy Tripe: Scott Morrison’s “Arc of Autocracy” – » The Australian Independent Media Network

To show how clear of eye Morrison has been, he has successfully made Australia the subservient partner in the AUKUS security pact with the United States and the UK. What was left of Australian sovereignty has been brazenly outsourced. The prime minister barely acknowledges the rationale of the agreement in the Lowy address, which has little to do with Australia eventually having its own questionable submarines with nuclear propulsion. The central point is granting greater access to US armed forces for easier deployment in the Indo-Pacific, a logistical benefit that is bound to make any war more, rather than less likely. Some freedom; some sovereignty.

Scott Morrison: The great Australian disaster

As communities are struggling to rebuild from devastating floods, the Prime Minister has once again bungled the response, writes Graham Perrett.

The last three years have starkly revealed a Prime Minister who naturally shirks responsibility. We have someone in The Lodge who happily blame-shifts to states and territories whenever he can. A man who leaves every decision to the last minute and then does as little as possible. The next Election will decide if Mr Morrison is fit to lead our country into a second decade of Coalition rule.

Amongst the mud and the destroyed belongings piled on the sidewalks, my local communities are helping each other pull through this latest challenge. I could not be prouder of them right now. Good governments step up during times of crisis. I know very well that the people of Moreton are my boss. Those who step back during a crisis aren’t worthy of the title of government. They are frauds or charlatans and Australia deserves better.
