Victorian Liberals care more about themselves than their communities

The Frydenberg Aspiration is on show with “KEEP ME” billboards.

“Look, on that call just now with Malcolm, you just thanked Julie and Kelly [long silent pause] … But I helped you too,” he said. I was bemused that he felt the need to say that. And on another call just a few months later, he randomly mentioned “numbers in the party room” during a conversation with me about something completely unrelated – his blatant leadership aspirations already on show. “Look I know you like me … and I know I’d have your vote in the party room,” he said.

The Truth about America’s Second Civil War | The Smirking Chimp

Where will all this end? Not with two separate nations. What America is going through is less like a civil war and more like Brexit – a lumbering, mutual decision to go separate ways on most things but remain connected on a few big things (such as national defense, monetary policy, and civil and political rights). We’ll still be America. But we’re becoming two versions of America. The open question is analogous to the one faced by every couple that separates — how will we find ways to be civil toward each other?

Crikey Worm: A heated issue

Scott Morrison coal climate emergency

Good morning, early birds. The Morrison government’s plan for climate action will lead to nearly 4 degrees of global heating according to analysis, and Treasurer Josh Frydenberg and opponent Monique Ryan went head-to-head in a fiery debate yesterday. It’s the news you need to know, with Emma Elsworthy.

Scorched dystopia or liveable planet? Here’s where the climate policies of our political hopefuls will take us

Who is Frydenberg doing it for if his policies are consistent with a 3C degree future hike in heat? He’s not listening to Kew, science or the rest of the world. Only his Party!

Over to you The scientific consensus is clear. Greenhouse gas emissions must peak by 2025 at the latest and plummet thereafter, to limit global warming to 1.5℃. Unless policies are substantially strengthened, Earth is set to hit 1.5℃ warming in the 2030s, and a future of at least 3℃ warming awaits. The onus is on the next parliament to protect Australians from climate catastrophe. On May 21, Australian voters have a chance to send a clear message about the kind of world we want to leave for future generations.

Climate change experts say India’s heatwave offers the world a terrifying glimpse into the future – ABC News

Three Indian men sit in a street waving handkerchiefs around to cool down

Kew is not just a part of Australia but a part of the World and if their Rep J Frydenberg doesn’t represent the majority of Kew or Australia what reason is there to “Keep Josh”? Our concern here in Kew is Climate and government integrity. We’ve seen Frydenberg and his government breaking rules. We’ve seen him walk back on promises and we’ve seen him ignore these major concerns to such an extent he’s helped tarnish our reputation in the World and in the Pacific. Fiji put out the warning long ago that Australia was alienating it’s neighbors and Peter Dutton simply laughed. We witnessed Boomgate way back when Abbott was PM and things haven’t changed.

“Australia and India in that way are similar … from this episode, what should really come out is a lot of awareness,” she said.

“We are talking about India [which] has a population of 1.4 billion people, and all the working class — the daily wage workers who are out there in the field dealing with the heatwave directly — have contributed very little to climate change,” she said. “The onus of reducing emissions is not on India alone.” Back on the burning landfill pile, Sunita has also called for international action to change her life and that of her children’s. “I would like to tell people around the world that there should be a solution for all of this.”

Denmark makes Bid for “Putin-Free” Energy by Accelerating Mammoth Artificial Wind Island Plan

Europe has faced a dilemma in standing up to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, since most European countries have tied themselves to Russian methane gas and petroleum imports. These countries are thus funding the very war they rail against. Denmark, for its part, is accelerating the building of two mammoth wind facilities, one on an island in the Baltic Sea and the other on an artificial island in the North Sea. The wind facilities were scheduled to be completed by 2030, but in a declaration of independence from Russian gas, Dan Jørgensen, Denmark’s minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities, has said that his country must “be free of Russian fossil fuels as soon as possible” by moving the schedule substantially up.

“Who do you trust?” asks the Liar from the Shire – » The Australian Independent Media Network

One thing we can be assured of Anthony Albanese isn’t Scott Morrison. Another he hasn’t the production team Morrison has and he doesn’t simply arrogantly say “I’m not answering that” or avoid questions altogether. Albanese is the man you can trust to try to answer every question put to him providing the ALP’s distinguishing difference if not the nuanced details.

With Morrison you can’t as there are no details. He wines, dines, and hosts the commercial mainstream media. Corporate leeches whose business model, “ratings”, depends on him, his government’s generosity, and Morrison being the central white knight for their consumer audience’s attention. It’s a codependent quid pro quo relationship rather than an Independent one as is that with the ABC.

By and large it’s a supportive rather than a critical marriage. The ABCs relationship is more investigative and less able to be manipulated by Morrison. As a consequence, Morrison avoids it like the plague. Particularly so during this election.

Albanese, the ALP on the other hand are the targets of the gotcha questions in the constant hunt for a front-page criticism. Sensationalism for the widest public,to curry Morrison’s favor, improve their bottom line and all in plain sight delivered in the guise of balanced News. Newscorp and Skye no longer even bother to hide the fact that cash for comment is their business.

Scott Morrison is asking the Australian people “Who do you trust?” – a gutsy approach from a man who has earned the sobriquet ‘Liar from the Shire’.

Do you trust the man who draped his arm around his leader, grinning innocently as he proclaimed “I’m ambitious for this guy” whilst his backroom boys were organising a coup?

Do you trust the man who left the country in flames to sip cocktails poolside in Hawaii, had his office deny it, and then excused it by saying he doesn’t hold a hose, mate?

Morrison claims he is the better economic manager. This was initially based on false claims of having delivered a surplus. Instead, we got the first recession in thirty years and debt levels unprecedented outside of wars.

After having said “governments don’t create jobs, businesses do”, Morrison is now claiming credit for creating 1.9 million jobs since they were elected in 2013.

Between September 2013 and February 2022, Australia’s population increased by 2.7 million people so that growth in jobs is basically just population growth.

Morrison also claims credit for an unemployment rate of 4%.

Antipoverty Centre analysis of ABS and Department of Social Services data shows that while the unemployment rate has not been this low since before the global financial crisis in 2008 when it was also 4%, the proportion of working-age people who rely on an unemployment payment has nearly doubled – from 3.3% in mid-2008 compared to about 5.9% today.

Will a hung parliament lead to ‘chaos’? What a Gillard v Morrison comparison reveals | Australia news | The Guardian

Former Australian prime minister Julia Gillard

Gillard outperformed Abbott and Morrison when it came to bills passed by both houses.  She topped the list when one considers the daily rate with which Acts were passed. Morrison and Abbott captains of Nope  lagging considerably behind

The prime minister, Scott Morrison, and his treasurer, Josh Frydenberg, have both said voting for independent candidates in the federal election could lead to the “chaos” of a hung parliament. Scott Morrison Labor says rate rise highlights PM’s shredded credentials but Morrison insists it’s part of pandemic journey Read more However, a Guardian Australia analysis of legislation passed and not passed under various governments shows the minority government led by Julia Gillard actually had a better success rate in passing legislation than the Morrison government.

Last month Frydenberg warned in a media conference this was not the time to take a chance on “the chaos of a hung parliament”.

Similarly, when asked during an interview on Tuesday whether he would negotiate with independents, Morrison said he would not.

“This is a real question for the people who are voting at this election,” he told 3AW. “Voting for the independents is a vote for chaos.”

It should be noted that both of the above analyses do not count the number of bills lost to failed negotiations prior to the introduction of legislation.

However, in the context of minority governments, or governments that have a minority in the upper house, these indexes may give us an indication of which governments were better and worse in their negotiations with crossbenchers or the opposition.

Labor’s problem remains the lingering perceptions that it doesn’t manage money as well as the Coalition. Here at MWM we know otherwise. Trump still won’t shut up. He’s doing Democrats running for office a huge favor | Robert Reich | The Guardian

‘Among voters 45 to 64 years old – a group Trump won in 2020 by 50% to 49%, according to exit polls – just 39% now view him favorably.’

The beginning of May before midterm elections marks the start of primary season and six months of fall campaigning. The conventional view this year is that Democrats will be clobbered in November. Why? Because midterms are usually referendums on a president’s performance, and Biden’s approval ratings are in the cellar. But the conventional view could be wrong because it doesn’t account for the Democrat’s secret sauce, which gives them a fighting chance of keeping one or both chambers: Trump.

John Howard encouraged Evangelist minorities and cults to become donors and to actively participate in the LNP and politics. He saw that ultra-conservatism influence was developing in America. The consequence of which we are seeing and feeling in Australia now. Morrison represents the erosion of our majority Democracy along with it’s central pillar the Separation of Powers. We haven’t just witnessed but felt Australia’s slide towards an ultra-right Christian theocracy leading to minority rule over the majority. The ALP is currently the only Party representative of the Australian ideal of majority representation and a government that respects all Australians equally. One we last witnessed during Rudd/ Gillard era.

Morrison’s first bill on his agenda should he win is the RDB with no protection for LGBTQI’s why? Who is he really working for?

The American Religious Right as a political force is in some ways a creation of the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that made abortion a woman’s right grounded in Americans’ constitutional right to privacy. Opposition to abortion and to a right to privacy united previously divided factions within US Christianity, Evangelicals and Roman Catholics, and galvanized the previously quietist Evangelicals to go into politics.

Morrison needs magic and a stroke of luck – with both in short supply

morrison

Morrison looks as old and as tired as Trump, a fish out of water thrashing around in the shallows searching for another chance. Looking for a miracle while we stand watching. No, he’s Brian Houston his mentor reliving Houston’s experience at Hillsong

the ALP plan to allow a modest number of lower-income earners to get into the housing market through a shared equity scheme. These have been used successfully in other countries and are supported by various state governments. Morrison backed similar schemes in 2008 and 2017, but now he reckons it’s a sneaky way of Labor grabbing capital gains from the family home. If it was a bigger scheme, one that is easier for people to grasp in detail or it looked more sinister than it is, Morrison might be onto something. As it is, he looks like a tired vaudeville act trying to work up the crowd with material at least two seasons old.

The great awakening Morrison’s tenure has been a test of his character – one he has failed abysmally. The election will be a test of Australia’s character but likely one we will pass. It is not entirely clear to me when Smirko Morrison’s re-election campaign jumped the shark. Tony Abbott was a national embarrassment, a badly shaved yowie in red-sluggos who bumble-fucked his brief, shambolic term as PM as if he were still in opposition. Morrison runs his as a marketing exercise. Electioneering has been his permanent setting since he and his retinue of Winston Wolfes and limbo champions steam-cleaned Malcolm Turnbull’s blood spatter from the PM’s suite and took up residence. We’ve had >3 years of Smirko the spiv playing dress-ups, 1,300+ days of curries and cock-ups, of crimes and cover-ups, of the game of mates, of drink spikers and staff shaggers, of dullards and sousers in high office – a time when a functionary tabled his seminal work on a minister’s desk and two Tory amuse-douche MPs tea-bagged rent boys in the PH prayer room.

The death of public interest journalism will not happen at the hand of the corporate entities that wish to distort it, nor the journalists that wish to change its meaning for personal gain. Throughout this Election, journalists have been unable to provide an objective utility to the population, lacked the ability to articulate policy and have demonstrated a startling inability to incorporate this Government’s actions into their analysis. The results of this Election will determine the future of this nation and, pending the significance of the outcome, could also damage the public’s perception of the press for a generation.

Election 2022: The Liberal Party has lost its way, says Fred Chaney

Fred Chaney

1958 proudly proclaimed that one of the distinctions between it and the Labor Party was that the primary obligation of a member of parliament was to the electorate, and that to cross the floor, unlike the tightly caucused Labor Party, was permitted on conscience issues.

The Liberal Party is in coalition with the Nationals. If it wins the election it will be in the same coalition. Can it be trusted to do any more on climate change than prevaricate, obfuscate and avoid meaningful action, as it has done for years? If it requires the support of the centrist independents to govern it will have to change. It will have to take climate change seriously, it will have to honour its discarded commitment to have a corruption commission with teeth, it will have to restore accountability because it will be demanded as the price of being in government. It will have to be in a new parliamentary arrangement with people who are not forced into policy positions against the national interest by the most reactionary elements of the Liberal and National Parties.

“American Nationalist,” The New York Times’ three-part investigation of the rise of Fox News’ Tucker Carlson, tells the story of how the star host, with the full support of Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch and the network’s other top executives, created “what may be the most racist show in the history of cable news.”

Fox’s brass, as reporter Nick Confessore details, has ignored any number of warning signs and protests from inside and outside the network that Carlson’s white nationalist rants were dangerous, due to their appreciation for his ratings and affinity with his message.

The takeaway for those involved with Fox – staff, guests, and companies that buy ads on the network – should be clear: You are supporting a company that prioritizes the promotion of white nationalism in the U.S.

Independent ABC Must Declare Who They’ll Side With After The Election! – » The Australian Independent Media Network

Frydenbergs most recent slogan “Keep Josh” makes him  sound more like an Independent who no longer wants to be seen as part of the  Losing Team. He should declare which side he’s on. It doesn’t sound as if he expects to win this election or see Scott kept.

So it’s pretty clear that the independents have certain candidates more worried about them than the Labor Party which is why I find their whole strategy about as clever as Barnaby Joyce running on a platform of: “I’m so into family values that I have two families.” The first difficulty any independent has is getting noticed. If I were to run in Kooyong, I’d be lucky to attract a handful of votes but if Josh were to say publicly that you shouldn’t vote for me,

I’d probably get more votes than if he ignored me. Similarly, Timmy Wilson’s dummy spit about Zoe Daniel’s signs means that I know who’s the “Voices Of” candidate for Goldstein even though I’m not in that electorate.

Let’s be real, it’s thanks to the Libs that Monique Ryan is being interviewed here, there and everywhere. It’s thanks to the Libs that a large number of the people in the endangered electorates know who the teal candidate is and what they stand for.

Our secular Democracy allows what they don’t. It has become increasingly obvious that the Separation of Powers and have no place in Morrison’s Australia.

Let me tell you about the most brazen assault on Australia’s secular democracy you have probably never heard about.

A plan by a shadowy group of “prophets” and “apostles” to take over the world sounds like the stuff of a bad airport novel, but it is one of the most important ideas in the Pentecostal movement today.

The premise of 7M, as it’s often called, is that the seven pillars of society have been taken over by demonic powers. Believers have to reclaim control of these “mountains” so that Christ can return to rule over the Earth.

It seems the traditional mum and dad business owners that have supported the Liberal Party for decades are being pushed out and replaced by fundamental Christians, who are more interested in power for power’s sake than promoting a (small “L”) liberal philosophy.

‘It’s not political’: PM’s distance ahead of looming interest rate rise

Morrison is the Great Denier

The ALP will allow the government to take stakes of up to 40 per cent in first home-buyers’ properties, to help them get into the market.

It is similar to a plan Mr Morrison announced in 2008 – which he denied on Monday. “I had no plan for the government to own people’s homes,” he said.

Mr Morrison said Labor’s plan would put homeowners “last in line”. “Labor has a plan where they want the government to own your home, it’s not only that, you are last in line when it comes to your home,” he said. “The bank has the first call over it. The government has the second call over it, and you come last when it comes to your own home.”

Murdoch bias is boiling Australian democracy

Bias exhibited by the Murdoch press is having too much political influence and slowly degrading our democracy, writes Dr Victoria Fielding. HAVE YOU EVER HEARD the fable of the boiling frog? The tale goes like this. If a frog is placed in boiling water, it will jump straight out. But if it is placed in tepid water and the heat slowly rises, the frog will stay cooking in the water until it is boiled to death. The frog fails to pick the exact moment the water became dangerously hot. This analogy is a great way of understanding how Australian democracy is being boiled in the water of Murdoch media bias. For many years, we have known the once tepidly biased Murdoch media was “dialling up” its bias. News reporting, commentary and opinion at Murdoch outlets were increasingly biased towards conservative ideas and right-wing political campaigning.

For parents already living grief, NDIS cuts feel like our kids are being punished for incompetent leadership | Kim Berry | The Guardian

Kim Berry and her son Oscar

Where is Morrison’s Team you know Linda Reynolds who single-handedly “fucked” the NDIS ducked for cover and has silently crept back and instigated her plan to shred the NDIS having let the cowboys in. Equity Investment Companies are getting a 14% return on their investment in the NDIS and are being left alone. How is it we don’t hear of the  LNP’s privatisation of this fundamental and necessary public service?

The NDIA has forgotten its purpose to serve the most vulnerable, and it leaves families with an impossible choice

Icac commissioner calls critics ‘buffoons’ after Scott Morrison labels it a kangaroo court | Independent Commission Against Corruption | The Guardian

Prime minister Scott Morrison

Morrison Revealed as a “Buffoon”

Critics who labelled the New South Wales anti-corruption watchdog as a “kangaroo court” – a phrase used by the prime minister in his criticisms of the agency – were “buffoons” who were launching unfounded attacks, a parliamentary committee has heard. Independent Commission Against Corruption (Icac) commissioner Stephen Rushton told a parliamentary review that references to the body as a “kangaroo court” weren’t just misleading but were also untrue. People who made those comments were “buffoons”, he told the review into the annual reports of the Icac and the Inspector of the Icac. Rushton said the Icac had been in place for more than 30 years, exposing corruption and maintaining trust in public administration.

Experts grade the major parties’ plans for an anti-corruption commission

Federal ICAC

Corruption under the LNP has slid from 7 to 18 on the International Corruption Index. Morrison his model, under which Politicians chose what is and isn’t to be investigated, and transparency hidden wouldn’t be a kangaroo court. No independent body is needed. Its the ALP’s fault we don’t have it or wont be getting an ICAC should he win. An ICAC which is primarily a broken promise of Morrison’s from his 2019 election platform. He also insists he doesn’t lie but has a string of NDA’s hiding his past trailing him. How Trump is that?

So we asked five experts to analyse and grade the major parties’ policies on the issue of a federal ICAC.

The royal commission that could recoup billions of rorted Aussie dollars

The royal commission that could recoup billions of rorted Aussie dollars

Of all the post-election royal commissions proposed to deal with Coalition corruption, one has a chance of retrieving billions, as Alan Austin reports. THE COALITION GOVERNMENT has squandered hundreds of billions of dollars through either incompetence or, worse, deliberate intent to enrich its foreign mates. Most of the frittered funds are gone forever. But maybe not all. The vast wealth and income lost over the last eight years through export corporations that pay little or no tax may actually be traceable and recoverable, in part at least. This will require an investigation with the powers of a royal commission and broad terms of reference. It will also require a change of government.

There will be no Separation of Powers in Morrison’s Democracy

despite Philip Ruddock’s 2018 Religious Freedom Review showing there was “no impediment” to religious freedom in Australia. But the Review made concessions to religion which – with the help of Christian Porter and the Morrison government – morphed into several troubled versions of the Religious Discrimination Bill (RDB). In February 2022 the Bill was “shelved”, but it was not defeated. Its failure to pass into law, however, did create even greater angst for the religious right. There was already a form of ‘Christian Woke’ – or claims of religious racism – which arose from the sense of injustice and persecution when Same Sex Marriage was legalised. The RDB remains a means to re-establish Christian authority for religious fundamentalists – especially on the LGBTI issue. They still wish to impose their religious “ethos” within education, together with the ability to hire and fire teachers and reject students purely on the basis of their sexuality.
