Election 2022: Have wages flatlined for a decade? And is there a magic pen?

Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese backed an increase in the minimum wage to keep up with inflation.

FACT CHECK 1: “The cost of living is about money in as well as money out, and in terms of wages growth, we’ve seen wages go backwards in the last year – we’ve seen wages flatline for 10 years.” Anthony Albanese, May 8.

It is certainly fair to say real wages growth has been historically low over the past decade. And as Albanese correctly notes, real wages have fallen in the past year.

FACT CHECK 2: “There’s no magic wand to increase wages. There’s no magic pen that makes it all happen.” Scott Morrison, May 9.

So while there may not be a magic pen, it would be wrong to suggest there is nothing the federal government can do.

Morrison is simply saying “It’s not my job” “I’m not holding the hose” proving yet again he’s no leader

Morrison stands by Katherine Deves and wrongly claims ‘young adolescents’ can have gender confirmation surgery | Liberal party | The Guardian

Liberal candidate for Warringah Katherine Deves at a party rally in Sydney

Morrison tells us to look at the paucity of stats when it comes to discrimination against LGBTQIs in religious schools when arguing for his RDA. “Look at the reality” he says. But he reverses that when he supports Deves who argues to ignore the paucity of stats in trans-gender girls in sports. They are virtually nonexistent and aren’t a threat to women in sport.

Not only do Morrison and Deves contradict each other but Morrison proves to be a hypocrite continuing to support Deves after her now two-faced tongue-in-cheek apology which she has publicly walked back on. Deves has literally spat the dummy and told Morrison he and his LNP cronies can get fucked and that she is now running as an independent for her own ego’s sake, despite knowing she has no chance of winning the seat.

Morrison, who handpicked Deves to run just weeks out from the start of the campaign, has repeatedly defended the Warringah candidate by noting she had apologised for her remarks.

On Saturday he said: “In terms of what Katherine Deves has said in the past, she has withdrawn those and she said they were insensitive.

“And that was my view as well. So there’s no suggestion that I have supported those earlier comments.

I don’t support those earlier comments.” The shadow infrastructure minister, Catherine King, told ABC News Breakfast it did not surprise her that Deves had walked back the apology.

“I think this is an incredibly divisive debate and I think the prime minister has chosen a very divisive candidate to run in that seat and I think it’s really awful to see that happening in the context of a federal election campaign,” she said.

Do your job competently – » The Australian Independent Media Network

It’s not the lack of experience Scott it’s the lack of competence that’s the yardstick. After 25 years Albanese has shown he’s not lacking and in the same period that can’t be said of your history.

The Coalition and some media are arguing that Albanese’s ALP doesn’t have the knowledge, skills or abilities to form a government, an illogical argument as the only way to get direct and recent experience is to do the job. When Morrison started work in the Prime Ministerial office, we didn’t even get a say in his elevation, as the only election he won was one of his political party’s Members of Parliament. At that time, he too had none of the experience in the job that he now claims is mandatory.

IBAC hits back at criticism of decision to grill premier in secret

IBAC Commissioner Robert Redlich has defended the agency’s handling of witnesses.

Poor Matthew Guy he wants to control his members not lead them so instead he forced Quin to jump overboard.

Guy can’t even get his facts right and Robert Redlich IBAC’s head has to explain them. Guy suggested private conversations in-camera held with Dan Andrews are evidence of his guilt of corruption. Redlich publicly embarrassed Guy on his total lack of knowledge of what IBAC was actually doing. Private hearings are for those IBAC feels there is little or no evidence of corruption. the very reverse of what Guy is saying.

But wait isn’t Matthew Guy the LNP Minister for Planning who was actually caught in the act of corruption? Didn’t he illegally help a mate in Ventor on Philip Island with a $2M property problem and got busted? Wasn’t he the Mathew GUY caught wining and dining on a freebie lobster lunch with a renowned Mafia boss? Matthew Guy more than anyone should know what real corruption is behind closed doors while talking to IBAC in private isn’t

IBAC tends to hold public hearings only if it has strong evidence of alleged wrongdoing.  When questioning witnesses in public, the commission must be satisfied there are reasonable grounds to conclude the witness has acted corruptly, or that it is in the public interest to examine the witness publicly and that no unreasonable damage will be done to their reputation.

Women voters help Labor extend Newspoll lead to 54-46

Events have handed Scott Morrison a political gift.

Morrison is who he is, and he will be given the sack yet again. But remember, he believes he’s ” been chosen” so the unpredictable still lies ahead within the Liberal Rabble.

One thing is for certain the ALP will be handed a poison chalice, and a decade of mess to clean with the commercial media still barking and chasing the money it feeds off. They still be dancing to the tune of those who have the bulk of it. The ALP will only have a short time to prove themselves and must SAVE THE ABC, et up an integrity commission, and create secure jobs transitioning to clean energy. The must revitalize our global reputation not just their domestic one.

Labor has increased its lead over the Coalition in two new polls as early voting centres open across the country on Monday, two weeks before the federal election. The Australian‘s Newspoll released on Monday shows Labor rising one point to 54-46 per cent on a two-party preferred basis (compared to 53-47 per cent a week before). Support for Labor is at 39 per cent, with the Coalition slipping to 35 per cent.

Conclusion: Sass to The Max The hostility of the media, along with its total hypocrisy (deficits are now an issue again just in time for a Labor government) is hereby exposed. Your role, Mr Albanese and the Labor team, is to no longer take the crap that media dishes out. Scott Morrison has cowered the media through his screeching about bias when confronted with facts he does not like, and they are compliant lapdogs instead of the watchdogs they are meant to be. Now, I am not suggesting that Mr. Albanese manipulate the press as his counterpart has done, but I do want him to say when confronted with some partisan BS question framed in some crap fashion Nice gotcha question there. Does anyone have a serious question they would like to ask? This is not hostile to the media broadly, but it does send the message ‘serious questions only, folks’. It will be necessary for Mr. Albanese to put the media in their place from the start, because if Labor is elected on May 21st, the media will commence Operation Restore Legitimate Government from May 22nd.

Who is the autocrat? – » The Australian Independent Media Network

What comes out of Morrison’s mouth are “sound bytes” Style without meaning, oxymorons,

By David Solomon Autocracy: ‘a system of government by one person with absolute power’. Public autocracy?

Public autocracy? There’s no such thing, according to my dictionaries, or indeed, Google. It’s a contradiction in terms.

But what I think Prime Minister Scott Morrison meant when he declared (in an interview reported in Wednesday’s Sydney Morning Herald) that Australia could become a ‘public autocracy’ if a national integrity commission had too much influence over government thinking was that absolute power would be exercised by public servants, rather than by politicians such as himself.

It is a nonsensical suggestion, that deliberately, falsely, misrepresents the power any prospective national integrity commission might have, and the way the public service does, can or even might operate. But it says a lot about the unconstrained powers that the Prime Minister considers are appropriate for him and his ministers. Indeed, about the way he and his government have sometimes acted.

Morrison’s religious discrimination act is a sop to homophobes – pure and simple – » The Australian Independent Media Network

Morrison says discrimination against LBGTQIs in schools “isn’t a problem just look at the figures”. But he believes in transgender girls in sports is but,” just don’t look a the figures”.

Morrison will say anything at any even contradicting himself. Catherine Deves has walked back on the apology she made and Morrison guaranteed. Her disgusting and cruel comment about children now stands. Like Tudge will “I don’t know anything about that ” now be Morrison’s response?

Scott Morrison has announced his determination to go ahead with his failed religious discrimination act, without the promised concurrent amendments to the sex discrimination act to protect gay and transgender students.

“We’ve been having this conversation for about the last four years, and on each occasion, it has been presented that apparently students are being expelled each and every day, each and every week, or each and every year. There is no evidence [of that] because the religious schools themselves don’t wish to do that. They don’t wish to do it. This is an issue that is actually not occurring in these schools.”

They may not want to expel students, just threaten them with burning in the fires of hell unless they give up their perverted, evil ways.

And that’s what this bill is designed to do – to protect the right of the religious to abuse and discriminate.

Back in 2017, Morrison revealed the true beginnings of this bill – a payback for losing the marriage equality plebiscite.

There’s Something Very Disturbing About Australia’s Very Normal 2022 Elections – Mother Jones

The election is two weeks away. Unlike in America, there are no fancy FiveThirtyEight-style modelers tinkering with projections and fueling Election Day nightmares. The most prominent weekly poll has remained pretty consistent, showing Albo’s Labor poised to win. (Other polls show the same.) Of course, the last election also predicted a Labor win, and ScoMo, the conservative, eked out a victory. But his lackluster response to Australia’s drumbeat of apocalypse appears to have had a lasting impact, and, like Ted “Cancun” Cruz, he’ll be remembered for skipping town for Hawaii during the country’s worst bushfire crisis. He was lucky that the state governments controlled the basic mechanics of the coronavirus pandemic, sparing Australians the worst outcomes—but voters remember ScoMo’s bumbling excuses for what he could control, the country’s painfully slow vaccine rollout. His reaction to the pandemic can be seen as a scaled study of his government’s response to the bigger and more relentless assault of climate change across the continent.

As News Corp goes ‘rogue’ on election coverage, what price will Australian democracy pay?

Newscorp ( Murdoch) wants Australian Media Americanised. It’s how it made it’s profit. It wants the UK media well done burnt to the ground and the BBC gone like the ABC  too.

What does a democracy do when a dominant news media organisation goes rogue during an election campaign?

In 2022, News Corporation is confronting Australia with this question once again, as it did in 2019, 2016 and 2013, and as it did in the United States in 2016 and 2020.

“Going rogue” here means abandoning any attempt at fulfilling one of the media’s primary obligations to a democratic society — the provision of truthful news coverage — and instead becoming a truth-distorting propagandist for one side.

The evidence that News Corp has gone rogue during the current federal election is plentiful. It can be seen every morning in its newspapers across the country, and every evening on Sky News after dark.

A sample of its election coverage over the period April 27 to May 2 makes the case.

Journalism must save itself or, frankly, it’s done for

A royal commission can’t fix journalism as it might fix aged care or veterans’ services. Journalists are going to have to save themselves. Here’s how they could start. First, understand that the Australian government has gone a long way down the road of destroying pillars of democracy. The rate of destruction of accountability and judicial bodies and the government’s hostility to transparency and truth are actually undermining Australian democracy. That this destruction is being led by the prime minister should weigh heavily on what journalists do.

US Double Standard: Russia Sanctioned for Ukraine Occupation, but 4,000 new Israeli invaders of Palestinian West Bank merely “Opposed”

If the US were genuinely interested in some sort of political solution to the Israeli Apartheid practices regarding the Palestinians, nothing would be easier than to just step aside and let the world punish the Bennett government for these policies, which amount to war crimes. Washington wouldn’t even have to be proactive itself. Or Israeli officials could start being targeted for economic sanctions by the Treasury Department the way Russian high officials are being fingered. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett made $200 million with software and would feel the pain if he were sanctioned. But official Washington is so in the tank for Israeli Apartheid that making such a suggestion sounds outlandish.

In contrast, Washington is attempting to reshape the entire world so as to get Putin back out of Ukraine, and we see exactly what it looks like when an illegal Occupation is genuinely unacceptable to the White House.

A once in a century chance – » The Australian Independent Media Network

By way of an executive summary, you will read how the need for change is required as the Morrison Government has delivered poor governance due to:

  1. Morrison’s lies and poor character.
  2. The government’s terrible management of the economy.
  3. Its broken promises.
  4. Its failure to act on climate change.
  5. Its failure to properly execute foreign affairs and national security.
  6. The scandals.
  7. The aged care debacle and the threat of the Indue Card.
  8. Medicare being dismantled.
  9. Robodebt causing so much harm and even death.

Whereas the call for change to an Albanese Government may be found in not just the ALP’s treasure trove of policies, but also in a future Prime Minister and a cabinet which will not be embroiled in controversies, a cabinet which governs in the nation’s interest, not their own.

So, now that we have the agenda of this article set out in stone, as they would say in the 2009 comedy-drama of the same title, “away we go.”

The Handmaid’s Tale: the book reviewed – » The Australian Independent Media Network

The recent resurgence of interest in the novel is arguably directly associated with Donald Trump’s election, in 2016. The rise of the religious right, the assault on women’s rights, the rise of the #metoo movement all speak to the relevance of the book, but also to the need for such a book, now.

Recent legislation in several U.S. states, as well as in Poland seeks to criminalise abortion. This appears to be heading toward another round of theocratic law-making, and pressure on women’s lives. So the book, although written over thirty years ago, still delivers a timely warning. Stay alert. Your freedom is a valuable, but fragile, thing.

This book is written to reflect the world view of a late twentieth century, educated woman, making her way in a repressive and dangerous world. Margaret Attwood’s writing is above all else immensely intelligent, and accomplished. I believe that every word is meant, as is, and that the book is enough.

The movies and television shows will never deliver the punch that this seemingly slight book will. This is a harrowing story, but it fulfils its purpose. It makes us take the ongoing threats to our freedom very seriously.

‘A great big lie’: researcher disputes government claim that 90% of GP visits are bulk-billed | Health | The Guardian

Medicare cards and coins

The Australian government says almost nine out of 10 visits to GP clinics are bulk-billed, but a health insurance researcher says gap fees often aren’t recorded, meaning the official data is “a great big lie”.

Andrew James*, his wife, and their two children were bulk-billed for 15-minute appointments at their Sydney GP clinic for three years with their Medicare records showing they paid “$0”.

However, at every appointment, James and his family were charged a $35 gap fee as a separate Eftpos transaction.

“There was nothing on our health records capturing this money as an out-of-pocket expense,” he said.

EXCLUSIVE Education Minister Alan Tudge has admitted he forgot to disclose to parliament that he had transferred ownership of a $1 million Melbourne property to his former wife for six months, in a clear breach of disclosure guidelines.

The missing in action Minister – who stepped down from the frontbench last year in the wake of an ongoing scandal over an extramarital relationship with former Liberal staffer Rachelle Miller – confirmed the error on Friday following an investigation by news.com.au.

It follows controversy over a recent $500,000 payout to Ms Miller – who worked in his office as a press secretary – that was also revealed by news.com.au last month, with questions still yet to be answered on what the payout is for. The Prime Minister aannounced last year that Mr Tudge was not returning to the frontbench of his own volition.

However, on the same day he announced the election, he revealed Mr Tudge was still the education Minister but had stood aside and was welcome back after the votes were counted.

“Well, he stood aside. He decided to stand aside for his own personal reasons. And should he be in a position to be able to step up again, then I would welcome him back,’’ Mr Morrison said.

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton also previously failed to declare a million-dollar property his family owns in Townsville, in a blunder his office blamed on simple human error.

From the outset, it was a controversial arrangement: one that’s remained in the spotlight amid increasingly fraught tensions between the Australian and Chinese governments, and China’s new security pact with Solomon Islands.

Along the city’s main commuter routes, corflutes have cropped up bearing the frowning face of the Prime Minister and the words: “MORRISON & THE CLP SOLD THE PORT. VOTE HIM OUT!!”.

When did our Elections become so Presidential, so American. Who turned it into a leadership and media battle?

It is time to ask yourself who you want to wake up with, again. Three years ago, we faced this decision with the disastrous reigns of Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull still fresh in our memories. While our elections are about individual members in individual electorates, the system has gradually become more presidential. The result may be that people vote for the local candidate if they like the leader of his or her party.

As for Labor, there is a powerful team. The likes of Penny Wong, Jim Chalmers, Kristina Keneally, Tanya Plibersek, and the find of the election, Jason Clare are all showing what they can do. It appears impressive.

A Successful Climate Movement Must Be a Working-Class Movement

The only way to stop climate change is to build a mass, working-class movement whose demands both resonate with average people and take on the billionaires who are profiteering from the climate crisis.

Who enjoys freedom of worship in Israel?

Images of at least one Israeli drone dropping tear gas on Muslim worshippers at Al-Aqsa Mosque during the holy month of Ramadan marked a new phase in the occupation’s aggression against Palestinian land and people . . .

In another troubling scene, Palestinian Christians were not allowed into their church in Jerusalem by the Israeli occupation police, while foreigners were welcomed in. The Israeli occupation’s police lined people up into two lines, one for foreigners and the other for Palestinians and all those who speak Arabic. The latter, police mandated, were not allowed into the church.

Russia’s ‘Victory Day’ and the Trump-Putin Alliance Against Ukraine | The Smirking Chimp

Trump Remains Loyal to Putin. Trump’s initial take on Russia’s 2022 invasion was to call Putin “savvy” and a “genius.” He has showered endless praise on the Russian dictator, never uttering an unkind word about him. Russia’s state-controlled media has replayed all of it.

President Biden and a united NATO deprived Putin of the “Victory Day” celebration that he desired this year. But Putin isn’t finished—with Ukraine, Trump, or American democracy. Recently, U.S. intelligence agencies assessed that Putin may increase his efforts to interfere with upcoming U.S. elections.

Compared to the obstacles that Putin encountered in Ukraine, undermining American democracy is his path of least resistance to a momentous Russian “Victory Day” down the road. As Trump and his Republican allies suppress voting, place Trump’s minions in critical state positions that could influence election outcomes, and push bogus post-election audits that destroy voter confidence, they have become Putin’s accomplices.
