Ironically the Prime Minister and his fellow converts in the News Corp tabloids around the nation on Monday were trumpeting the opportunities net zero will present for jobs and growth something they all decried as reckless at the 2019 election. Mr Morrison in question time ridiculed Labor for not having a plan to reach the 30-year target apparently oblivious to the fact that so far he hasn’t taken the nation into his confidence about his hitherto secret plan. Hopefully before he boards his plane on Thursday all will be revealed. Either way he won’t be asking the Parliament to do anything about it.

Federal policies remain firmly fixed on keeping fossil fuels in the energy mix and expanding coal and gas production. It recently approved several new coal mines and announced subsidised and expanded gas production. Gas is a fossil fuel that also needs to be phased out if we’re to have any chance of keeping warming to 1.5℃. The Morrison government is also increasing funding for carbon capture and storage, a policy aimed at continuing the use of fossil fuels. This is despite the country’s largest such project, the Gorgon venture off Western Australia, failing to reduce and store carbon emissions at the rate originally promised. The annual Climate Transparency analysis, released on Wednesday, shows Australia has some of the G20’s highest per capita emissions. It is the only developed country in the G20 with no price on carbon, yet ranks the fourth highest for risk of economic losses from climate impacts.
Australia faces an intensifying risk of global investors divesting bonds or equity if we don’t join other nations in making a net zero emissions commitment for 2050, the Reserve Bank has warned.
Very few media outlets have covered the Witness K and Bernard Collaery case in a diligent manner. Sky News, so often rallying for freedom of speech and democracy, didn’t even report on the successful appeal. Like all whistle-blowers, Bernard Collaery is a hero. People of all walks of life should be protected if they report on malfeasance. If Collaery’s prosecution goes ahead, Australian democracy will be weaker as a result.

No matter how you look at it, this is a sorry saga of secrecy, deceit and manipulation by Scott Morrison and one that has become all too familiar domestically. Although, this is the first time the Prime Minister’s preferred methods of operation have been demonstrated on the world stage. It appears that the U.S. expected Morrison would advise the French in a timely manner of his change of plans. This is a reasonable expectation of a reasonable leader, but the Americans had not yet realised the duplicitous and, some would say, cowardly nature of the man they are working with.

They were appearing to talk up their close friendship, but Scott Morrison and Joe Biden’s AUKUS announcement quickly turned awkward when the US President appeared to forget our Prime Minister’s name. Mr Biden thanked British Prime Minister Boris Johnson but then paused as he addressed Mr Morrison. “Thank you, Boris … I want to thank, ah, that fella down under,” Mr Biden said.

Politics before Covid
It may be too cynical to say that the failure of COVID-zero was contrived to force the “learn to live with it” option – the Boris Johnson con over the Dan Andrews’ strategy. But, as Mick Young said, whenever the choice is between a conspiracy and a stuff-up, go with the stuff-up every time. Expect numbers of cases to soar in NSW because even its tough new measures are too little too late. Expect Berejiklian to run up the white flag and declare an easing of restrictions as soon as she can. The results will be horrendous. Expect her PM to continue his undermining until Gladys resigns. Enter her deputy, Dominic Perrottet, who’s always quietly advocated letting her rip, to be Morrison’s new gold standard, golden-haired boy.
Yes, it’s the contradiction that gets me. I’m not suggesting that lockdown is easy, nor am I saying that kids unable to go to the playground won’t find it tough. I’m just wondering why now the same people who’ve been saying “Harden up, princess!” whenever anyone has talked about asylum seekers in detention, or the unemployed or any marginalised group, now suddenly find the fact that people are doing it hard a cause to be embraced. It’s almost like they’re pushing an « open up the economy and consequences be damned » agenda!

That mission has ended in abject failure. Its costs have been significant: 41 combat-related deaths, 260 wounded, more than 500 veteran suicides, thousands afflicted by post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and around A$10 billion expended with precious little to show for it.

With his political fate now tied to achieving the 70 per cent and 80 per cent vaccination thresholds agreed “in principle” by National Cabinet, Morrison is trying to stir the nation to get a jab, any jab, as quickly as possible. But that doesn’t mean he’s necessarily willing to throw everything at it. There are limits, apparently, to how far the Prime Minister will go, as his reaction to Labor’s cash-for-jab idea revealed.

Vaccinated Australians will get special rules to avoid some lockdown restrictions once 70 per cent of the eligible adult population have had two vaccine doses, and international border rules will be loosened to allow more people to come home. Once the national vaccination total hits 80 per cent, broad lockdowns will not be used in major cities, caps on returning Australians will be abolished and all restrictions on vaccinated travellers leaving the country will be removed.

There is perhaps more truth in the phrase ‘COALition propaganda rag’ than I first thought. As much praise as this and other Murdoch rags have heaped on Morrison, he himself is not the target. Murdoch is not defending Morrison as an individual, but rather the Liberal Party as a brand.

Is it too far-fetched to suggest that in the near future, we’ll have some Liberal-friendly commentator saying that the current mess is all the fault of Labor for not winning the last election?
From Prime Minister Scott Morrison we see a craven form hiding behind the khaki uniform of Lieutenant-General John Frewen. Morrison has outsourced to the distinguished soldier the politically contentious issue of the failings in planning, purchase and delivery of vaccines to keep Australians safe. This politicisation of our military is frankly scandalous, and according to former cabinet ministers, previous Defence Force chiefs would not have tolerated it. Making a uniformed general an apologist for the federal government’s policy decisions that caused the vaccine scarcity is banana republic stuff. Our vaccine rollout still lags behind the developed world, the PM’s claims last week that even if he had delivered on January’s vaccine timetable Sydney’s lockdown would still have happened, is an admission of failure.

An Australian-led team of eminent biologists has backed up the theory COVID-19 probably originated from animal-to-human transmission via a Wuhan market, rather than the Chinese city’s virus research lab. A critical review paper into the origins of SARS-CoV-2, the disease that causes COVID-19, has concluded it is most likely of zoonotic origin – jumping from an animal to a human. The review was released on Thursday as a preprint, which means it is not yet peer reviewed.

The regulator’s latest figures, to be released on Friday, reveal the flood of renewables and accelerating clean energy revolution have contributed to wholesale power price falls of up to 58 per cent, with the average prices falling below $70 a megawatt-hour for the first time since 2015. These price falls will add to the financial pain facing coal generators, which are more expensive to run than new wind and solar plants, and raise the risk of more coal-fired generators bringing forward their closure dates due to falling profitability.

It’s not me driving you nuts, he suggested implicitly to people watching the press conference at one point, it’s the pandemic making you cranky, wearing you down. “It’s the pandemic, that’s the reason why these things are happening, and happening not just in Australia but in all places around the world”. Yes, it’s the pandemic. For sure. But Morrison can’t absolve himself of responsibility for the roads not taken. The coronavirus didn’t stop Australia getting Pfizer, or failing to vaccinate workers, or failing to roll out dedicated quarantine facilities. That’s on him.
With Australia raising its hand to be part of joint naval exercises in the South China Sea, its departure from the G7 in Cornwall continues the “down-under” tradition of following U.S. foreign policy.
