Voter ID and dead cats – » The Australian Independent Media Network

To call Voter ID changes a “dead moggie” is very dangerous. Russian roulette was once called fun too until it wasn’t. That Idea is like the one thrown about decades ago, that the ABC was an unnecessary taxpayer burden and should be sold off. That grew to become LNP’s bullshit slogan  of “No Cuts to the ABC” in 2013 to 8 years of razor slices called by Treasurer Morrison “Efficiency Reviews”. A slip sliding of language which was a concerted effort to bring the “dead moggie” to life and “rid us of the ABC”. That LNP ideal outcome is now accepted as a normal LNP platform and practice and will continue to be forever more.

Changes to universal franchisement and compulsory voting can easily go the same way.  Yes, just another distraction, a “dead cat” that there really is no need for our Compulsory Voting system isn’t a hypothetical. Dead Cats have a habit of coming to life in the hands of the LNP,to become a normal part of our political ecosystem, labeled as “just debate” Beware!!

People that live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. James McGrath is correct to a point when he suggested that politicians don’t have a good reputation. Demonstrably it has nothing to do with the election process but more to do with actions the politicians are alleged to take during the political parties’ pre-selection processes or after election. Is it too cynical to suggest that the sudden legislation requiring voters to provide identification prior to voting is Morrison’s version of Boris Johnson’s ‘dead cat strategy’ where a dramatic or sensational topic is introduced to a discussion, solely to distract attention from the inconvenient truth? What do you think?

Kevin Rudd: Voter-ID laws are an assault on our democracy

Kevin Rudd

While there is no voter fraud in Australia it seems Morrison and the LNP are for Voter Suppression and hope that non-compulsory voting can be introduced to change our Democratic system sufficiently, and alter the playing field in their favor. They have been working on ridding Australia of the ABC and all the fail-safe mechanisms that we are most admired for among the world’s  Democracies when it comes to voting.. The LNP is a coalition of minority parties Nationals and Liberals with Labor actually getting the majority votes. If the Liberals could suppress votes and rid the country of the publicly owned broadcaster  they believe they could improve their voting status and gain seats in their own right. The Republicans in the US are doing it and so our unimaginative Liberals have  fallen into line not just diminishing but ridding us of our Democractic systems, why? Because with the backing of money, media, and voter suppression they believe they’d never lose and could form an Autocracy. Democracy only exists if parties accept their loss and governments act for those all citizens even those that voted against them.

Scott Morrison’s plan to introduce US-style “voter ID” laws for Australian elections represents a stealth assault on compulsory voting that will radicalize our politics and stop ordinary working families from exercising their sacred right to vote.

Australia polling place

With nothing but scandal after scandal not knowing what to do this government is following the footsteps of Trump’s Republicans and it’s obvious. Cobble the vote whereever possible and ensure the most vulnerable who the won’t help can’t vote. They are desperate to appear like a government rather than what they are, a ship of fools.

But while requiring IDs may materially help them in some close electoral contests, this is better read as a symptom of the Australian right’s stunning lack of imagination.

Australia has no voter fraud problem but the Coalition wants to look like it’s doing something

A proposal to tighten voter ID laws emanated from the Liberal party room last week.

It resembles many initiatives of the Morrison government, and most of the ideas which have emerged from Australian conservatism more broadly in the past decade or more, in that it is opportunistic, unoriginal, and so unnecessary as to be baffling.

It does not appear to be a response to anything that is actually happening in Australia.

There is no evidence of widespread voter fraud in Australia, where compulsory voting and universal electoral enrolment make voter fraud at scale almost inconceivable.

Trump shows no sign of going quietly

Back on the trail: Donald Trump speaks during a Save America rally in Iowa last month.

What a surprise that Australia’s LNP are pushing for the same policy here. Do they have an original thought among them?

This year, Republicans have used these seeds of doubt to push through more than 30 laws in 19 states to restrict voting, which in many instances largely impact Latino, African-American and Asian citizens.

Old Dog Thought- The LNP are anti-Australia’s Compulsory Vote and for Voter ID. Now that’s an elitist move to a Voting Pantomime, Authoritarian Rule and a rigged election. Think GOP, Republicans, Trump. Think Orban in Hungary, Erdogen in Turkey.
