News Corp tears down Murdoch’s ‘silos’ – and then harvests journalists’ jobs | Weekly Beast | Media | The Guardian

News Corp papers

There was just one tiny detail omitted by media editor Leo Shanahan. Tearing up the silos necessarily meant destroying dozens of journalists’ jobs. Instead of having four reporters covering a round you would have just one, and the story would be syndicated.

The day after the Blunden interview was published, the axe fell. Sources say about 65 people were tapped for redundancy at the Herald Sun and the Daily Telegraph, although the company won’t confirm numbers. On Thursday it was the Oz’s turn and another 13 people were made redundant, including an editor in his 60s who had clocked up decades on the payroll and a brilliant photographer.

Trump’s Authoritarianism is Ill-Suited to a Pandemic | The Smirking Chimp

Hospitals have been instructed to send COVID data to a central database in Washington, bypassing the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The information will no longer be accessible to the public, raising concern that the data is being hidden for political reasons and the lack of transparency will make it easier for the administration to mislead the public.

The administration is also blocking CDC director Dr. Robert Redfield from testifying before Congress about the safety of reopening schools. They are attempting to block GOP senators from allocating billions of dollars to the CDC, Pentagon, and State Department for pandemic response. And the administration even opposes sending billions to states for testing and contact tracing.

Wall Street Journal reporters’ letter reveals the farce of conservative “news” outlets | Media Matters for America

wsj-fb.jpg

However, the letter writers misunderstand the fundamental issue here: The problem is not that The Wall Street Journal’s opinion section undermines the newsroom’s credibility — it’s that in the right-wing media environment, especially under the ownership of the Murdoch empire, the newsroom only exists in order to help confer a patina of credibility on the opinion section as it spreads right-wing falsehoods. And this should become all that much clearer when looking at the opinion section’s responses and its total lack of accountability.

America: The rise of the Fourth Reich. 64088.jpeg

Goodbye America

Goodbye America. Perhaps the death of your democracy was inevitable. After all, a nation built on slavery and on lands stolen from Native-Americans, a land that allowed the abuses of “Jim Crow,” a land where, to this day, appeals to racism and hatred are accepted political tactics probably did not have much chance to survive in the first place.

So, all hail Fuhrer Trump, the glorious architect of the Fourth Reich. Because, if you don’t, his SS and Gestapo may soon pay a visit to your town too.

Passing the Buck: why Victoria’s Covid is raging in private aged care homes – Michael West

Aged care covid Victoria

The deaths of 80 elderly people are imminent as a result of COVID-19 spreading through private aged care homes. Aged care behemoths were granted an extra $200m to cope with the pandemic but refuse to provide critical paid pandemic leave to an overwhelmingly casualised workforce, claiming it’s the government’s responsibility. The government says the buck stops with aged care operators. Meanwhile, Victoria’s publicly owned homes, with mandated staffing requirements, have few reported cases of COVID-19. Dr Sarah Russell investigates.

Compare this with staffing in privately owned residential aged care homes, where a single registered nurse is often required to look after more than 100 residents.

Not surprisingly, data from the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission indicates outbreaks in Victoria are almost exclusively a private sector aged-care issue. State-owned nursing homes comprise about 200 of the 750 in Victoria, but of the 66 aged care homes that have reported a COVID case since June, just six are state-government run.

Trump Sending Federal Troops to Cities Run by Democrats | The Smirking Chimp

Trump’s attempt to divert attention from the coronavirus and protests against police violence against Black Americans is not working. He is attempting to portray those who oppose him as violent criminals, and promises to bring back LAW & ORDER, as he repeatedly tweets. But it is not working. Only 33% of Americans approve of his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and only 31% approve of his handling of race relations. And as for law and order: most people also trust Biden, rather than Trump, on that issue, too, by a margin of 49% to 42%.

And the federal intrusion into the cities appears to be backfiring. The crowds in Portland are increasing dramatically. Tonight the Wall of Moms waved their hands above their heads as they softly sang a new lullaby: “Hands up, please don’t shoot me.”

Asked why the US had been ordered the Houston consulate to shut down, State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus suggested breaches of the Vienna Convention, which she said requires diplomats to “respect the laws and regulations of the receiving State” and “have a duty not to interfere in the internal affairs of that State.”

“We have directed the closure of PRC Consulate General Houston, in order to protect American intellectual property and Americans’ private information,” he said.

AI Unveiled: another propaganda service for Defence, big business and the Coalition – Michael West

AI Group chief executive, Innes Willox

Is AI Group just a front for big business and foreign weapons manufacturers? Michael West reports on the rise of government and business propaganda outfits who are suddenly mute when the subject turns to the delicate matter of who funds them.

Nobody would begrudge Willox and other lobbyists the right to their opinions. Again, the questions are, why are taxpayers subsidising AI’s profitable businesses and why are these things never disclosed in their prolific media appearances?

The left of politics too has its think tanks which tend to be faithful to the political creeds of either the Greens or Labor. Again, unlike some of the Coalition’s flag-wavers such as AI, ASPI and the NSW Business Chamber they don’t tend to enjoy lavish Government contracts, which are clear conflicts of interest.

The final point of disclosure is that in recent years, AI has increasingly represented Defence contractors. This is a further area for public disclosure as Defence spending has gone through the roof under the present government.

Morrison Government kowtows to the Murdoch global Dynasty (ODT)

Opposition communications ministers have called out the Morrison government’s continued hypocrisy in its funding of its broadcast interests – granting $10 million of public to Fox Sports, weeks after revelations of continued cutting millions of dollars in funding to the ABC.

“The ABC has suffered from repeated budget cuts under the Coalition Government, some $783 million since 2014, and is now cutting jobs and news services to stay afloat. If there is money to go around for broadcasting, it should go to the ABC and SBS.

“The PM needs to reverse the funding cuts to the ABC. He can easily find the first $10 million by taking it back from Murdoch and putting it where it will be the most benefit to broadcasting and promoting women’s sport and where fans can actually watch it without forking out more money,” Hanson-Young said.
