Key to pandemic management is in the logistics

So, the advice is to:

  • socially distance: that reduces the density of the population and limits the availability of new hosts;
  • wear a mask: that reduces the ability of the virus to move between hosts;
  • get tested and socially isolate if positive: that actively reduces the carrying capacity;
  • and get vaccinated: that increases the number of people who have an immune system that can recognise and fight the virus and once again reduces carrying capacity.

I hope this helps to understand a little of the maths behind the management of the epidemic. It’s not guesswork The logistic equation can take much more complex forms and I’m certain that the modelling being used by decision-makers does just that, but the basic form of the equation is beautifully simple and clear. No magic required.

AGL’s record loss supercharges the end of coal in Australia, experts say

Coal

Energy giant AGL’s record loss has supercharged the end of coal in Australia and called into question the Morrison government’s commitment to expanding gas. That is the message from energy experts who are concerned that Australia’s heaviest emitters are not reading the writing on the wall and transitioning fast enough. The warning follows this week’s release of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPPC) report, which found the Earth is just 10 years away from heating 1.5 degrees on top of pre-industrial levels. On Monday, the IPCC delivered a damning assessment of Australia’s role in climate change, warning the planet was heating at a faster-than-anticipated pace. Just days later, the country’s biggest emitter posted a multi-billion-dollar loss.

the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, or IPCC, released the first part of its latest report on the state of the Earth’s climate. It details with greater certainty than ever before the links between human activity and extreme weather patterns: fires, floods, and rising sea levels. Journalist David Wallace-Wells and sociologist Dana Fisher join Ryan Grim to discuss the takeaways from the new report.

However, Morrison is on his third strike – the first was the way he stuffed up his block-headed response to the national bushfire emergency of 2019/20, the second his failure to “get” how women felt about physical and emotional abuse. ‘Nazi Propaganda’: Tucker Carlson Leans on Anti-immigrant ‘Replacement Theory’ | The Smirking Chimp

Fox News’ Tucker Carlson is facing backlash for his latest attempt to use the Nazi-inspired “replacement theory” to accuse Democratic lawmakers of importing violent criminals into the country for political gain. On Wednesday, August 11, Carlson appeared on “Fox & Friends” where he spoke with the panel of hosts and shared details about the so-called “scandal involving the border.” Carlson chimed in saying, “I mean, you know what this tells you honestly? What’s happening at the border is not a crisis. A crisis is a flood in Bangladesh, it’s an act of God. This is an intentional act.” “This is the administration bringing felons, violent criminals into our country on purpose,” Carlson claimed. “Why would you do something like that? Only to destroy it. I mean, there’s no other explanation for this. It’s not an act of compassion. It’s an act of hostility against the United States in order to change it forever. I think this is the greatest scandal of my lifetime, what’s happening on the border right now.” Carlson went on to claim that Democrats have a “strategy” that includes importing “violent criminals” to increase their voter roll.

IPCC: Ocean has risen more than in any century in at least 3,000 years, and in worst case could rise 7 feet in next 80 Years

What are the IPCC report’s most important overall messages in your view? At the most basic level, the facts about climate change have been clear for a long time, with the evidence just continuing to grow. As a result of human activities, the planet is changing at a rate unprecedented for at least thousands of years. These changes are affecting every area of the planet. Line chart showing influence over time of different sources of warming. Only human-caused emissions are on the same trajectory as the actual temperature rise. Humans produce large amounts of greenhouse gas emissions, primarily through fossil fuel burning, agriculture, deforestation and decomposing waste. IPCC Sixth Assessment Report While some of the changes will be irreversible for millennia, some can be slowed and others reversed through strong, rapid and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. But time is running out to meet the ambitious goal laid out in the 2015 international Paris Agreement to limit warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels (2 C equals 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit). Doing so requires getting global carbon dioxide emissions on a downward course that reaches net zero

The U.S. State Department sought to control Australian workers

Eisenhower warned us of the Industrial-Military Complex

In 1973, Australian workers at the joint Australian-U.S. low-frequency communications base at North West Cape in Western Australia were unhappy with their working conditions.

Yes, Australian workers need jobs and they need well paid and ongoing employment. Weapons manufacture in Australia will certainly fulfil this objective to some extent. But it does not need to be this way. There always have been real alternatives. Alternative employment that provides workers with well-paid, sustainable jobs making socially useful things: public housing, transport systems, alternative energy technology. Workers want employment that means they are contributing to building a better world for our community.

Cruel, costly and ineffective: Australia’s offshore processing asylum seeker policy turns 9

When Australia previously sent asylum seekers offshore, under the Howard government, the majority of people processed offshore and found to be refugees were settled in Australia. This fact did not prompt an increase in boat arrivals. More recently, there was no spike in boat arrivals when Australia announced that people offshore would be eligible for resettlement in the United States, or when almost everyone was moved back to Australia. We have just over a thousand asylum seekers here in Australia, and a small number offshore, who have been put through significant trauma in a failed attempt to send a harsh deterrence message to others who might consider trying to reach Australia by boat. They have been waiting years for a solution, when a simple one is available right now. All should be permitted to settle permanently in Australia or another appropriate country, provided that alternative is voluntary. Serious consideration should be given to what reparation and rehabilitation Australia may owe the victims of offshore processing. This deeply flawed policy must not be permitted to reach its ten-year mark.

The Shame of the Sacklers | The Smirking Chimp

In America, shame and honor have become confused partly because institutions that bestow honors often have the ulterior motive of extracting as much money as possible from rich honorees while knowing as little as possible about how these donors obtained their wealth. In return for the donation, honorees are imbued with moral approval. Richard Sackler and other family members involved in this tragedy deserve to be shamed. Institutions that took their blood money should remove the Sackler name from their centers, professorships, buildings, and pediments. If they won’t be held accountable in a court of law, they must be held accountable at least in the public sphere.

How does Australia’s health system rate internationally? This year it wins bronze

In the wake of the Tokyo Olympics, another international scorecard has been released, and Australia does well here too. The US-based Commonwealth Fund conducts regular surveys of health care in 11 countries: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. In its latest comparison, Australia ranks third overall, slipping from second in the previous comparison in 2017. The US, not unexpectedly, ranks last overall, and last on four of the five component rankings.

Media inequality: Labor is on an uneven playing field

The mainstream media has made progress difficult for Labor in its biased favouritism towards Liberal Party policies, writes Dr Victoria Fielding. THE MOST SAVAGE form of media inequality in Australian political reporting is the tired trope that the Labor Party are bad economic managers. Like all such tropes, its foundation is not only mythical, not backed up by facts, but rather underpinned by deeply held ideological assumptions by journalists that fan the flames of similar assumptions amongst voters. This media inequality – a form of structural media bias – leads the Labor Party to be framed as economically illiterate and a danger to economic growth every time they suggest even spending a cent. At the same time, the Liberal Party can spend as much as they like and that spending is characterised as good for the economy.

Greece, the font of European civilization. I’ve been studying Greek for the past few years and before the pandemic went to Athens for a few weeks every summer. It was mostly very pleasant, though a week or so could be hot. This year, the wildfires are encroaching on the capital, and it is like 118 degrees F. (!!!) Even islands like Evia are in trouble. The Solutions to the Climate Crisis No One is Talking About | The Smirking Chimp

In light of the latest IPCC report on climate change, it’s crucial we remember these four steps to avoiding a climate catastrophe. First, create green jobs. Investing in renewable energy could create millions of family sustaining, union jobs and build the infrastructure we need for marginalized communities to access clean water and air. Second, stop dirty energy. A massive investment in renewable energy jobs isn’t enough to combat the climate crisis. If we are going to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, we must tackle the problem at its source: Stop digging up and burning more oil, gas, and coal.

Australia’s climate change policy is completely inadequate

When Australia put forward a 2030 emissions reduction target six years ago (26% to 28% below 2005 levels by 2030) it was already among the weakest of all developed countries. Meeting it would see us retain our status as one of the most polluting countries on earth. Astonishingly, the Morrison government has remained stubbornly wedded to that target while almost every other advanced economy has substantially strengthened theirs.

Fact check: Angus Taylor’s response to the landmark IPCC report | Energy | The Guardian

Federal energy minister and emissions reduction minister Angus Taylor

Australia’s minister for emissions reduction, Angus Taylor, released a statement in response to the IPCC report. Here, we assess his claims.

1 Taylor’s word play: Ambition isn’t Commitment and projections show Australia isn’t on track

Taylor’s distraction: There has been no structural shift away from fossil fuels in transport, industry and mining. Reduction due to the pandemic isn’t a reduction Taylor makes out it is.

3 Taylor’s Steal: Australians certainly have grabbed household solar and run with it. But the solar surge has happened despite the Coalition, not because of any coordinated government effort.

Taylor’s Bullshit: For the record, no major party is proposing a carbon tax. The carbon policy Abbott repealed wasn’t a carbon tax either, despite all the apocalyptic screeching before the 2013 election. Just ask Abbott’s then chief of staff, Peta Credlin. “It wasn’t a carbon tax, as you know,” she said. “It was many other things in nomenclature terms but we made it a carbon tax.

Australia’s resort to the military in these pandemic times is unexceptional. How does COVID affect the brain? Two neuroscientists explain

Scientists are becoming more and more concerned with the emergence of a syndrome termed “long COVID”, where a significant percentage of sufferers of COVID-19 experience long-lasting symptoms. Studies suggest symptoms remain for approximately 5-24% of confirmed COVID cases, at least three to four months after infection. The risk of long COVID is no longer thought to be directly linked with either age or the initial severity of the COVID illness. So younger people, and people with initially mild COVID, can still develop long-COVID symptoms. Some long-COVID symptoms begin quickly and persist, whereas others appear well after the initial infection has passed. Symptoms include extreme fatigue and ongoing breathing complications. What particularly concerns us as neuroscientists is that many long COVID sufferers report difficulties with attention and planning — known as “brain fog”. So how does COVID affect the brain? Here’s what we know so far. How does the virus get to our brains?
