Paul Keating has warned us that ‘our strategic sovereignty is being outsourced to another country, the US’ – Pearls and Irritations

U.S. Marines with Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, Marine Rotational Force-Darwin.

It certainly didn’t start with Julia Gillard. Australia sat back and watched the slaughter that took place in the 60s when Indonesia killed some 1 million members of the PKI and attempted genocide of Chinese Indonesians at one and the same time. Meanwhile we sat back and watched and prepared for Vietnam Second Greatest Crime of the Century: The Bloodbath

Michael Pascoe, a few days ago, in the New Daily, in an article titled ‘Worried about Australian sovereignty? Don’t bother, it’s gone.’ drew together what Paul Keating, I and others have been saying recently about Australia becoming a proxy even a patsy for the United States.

The signs are ominous on numerous fronts.

Kishore Mahbubani from Singapore has pointed out that Australia looks like a spear-carrier for the United States.

North Australia is becoming a US military colony. It started with Julia Gillard agreeing with Barack Obama for the stationing of marines in Darwin. It followed last year with the Morrison government at a US/Australia Ministerial meeting committing us to ‘high end war- fighting and combined military operations in the region’ with the United States.

The enormously expensive AUKUS nuclear submarines are not to defend Australia but to be fused with the United States naval forces to contain Chinese submarines on the Chinese coast in the South China Sea. We are paying for a submarine to oblige the Americans rather than to defend Australia. We are choosing the wrong submarine.

The world has a choice: act decisively now or face a larger conflict with Russia | Vladyslav Vlasiuk | The Guardian

Volunteers for the Ukrainian army receiving training in Kyiv last week.

Even the UN general assembly – much criticised in recent years for a lack of global influence – voted overwhelmingly last week to condemn Russia’s “attempted illegal annexation” of four provinces in Ukraine, and declare that Moscow’s territorial claims “have no validity under international law”. Only Russia and four other countries – Syria, Nicaragua, North Korea and Belarus – voted against the resolution, while 143 countries voted yes.

The FATF should realise that Russian leadership only understands power. The more aggressive and comprehensive the response, the quicker this war will end.

And to be clear, it is Russia that needs to end this war. Over the past few weeks, Ukraine has noted certain interests making increasing calls for peace. Ukraine seeks peace. Ukraine longs for peace. But Ukraine will never succumb to peace by coercion.

If you need evidence of this, look no further than the children’s playground in Kyiv destroyed by Russian missiles last week. It is named after Ukraine’s national poet, Taras Shevchenko, a former serf who fought against Tsarist Russian subjugation in the 19th century. His works of resistance are now being sung in queues and scrawled on public buildings across Ukraine, including this line from “The Testament”: “Oh bury me, then rise ye up; And break your heavy chains; And water with the tyrants’ blood; The freedom you have gained.”

Ukraine needs more support. This can and must be agreed this week, says Ukrainian presidential adviser Vladyslav Vlasiuk

Education should be subversive. It should give us the intellectual tools and vocabulary to question the reigning ideas and structures that buttress the powerful. It should make us autonomous and independent beings, capable of making our own judgments, capable of understanding and defying the “cultural hegemony,” to quote Antonio Gramsci, that keeps us in bondage. In Wilson’s play, Bynum teaches Loomis how to discover his song, and once Loomis finds his song, he is free.

Only now, in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, does the world seem to recognise the real-life quandary they present when used in heavily built-up urban areas occupied by civilians.

A system designed that does not fit everyone’s purpose if that purpose is to provide a good environment for humans to achieve their goals. Capitalist Inequality Won’t Last Forever

Karl Marx said this but he didn’t put a date on it. History to date seems to have shown Capitalism is far better able to organize and adapt to any systemic threat it encounters now and over the horizon. Its strength of the organization is far more adaptable and faster than its opposition relies on Democracy to move forward in a system without an accelerator.

You must have an incredibly dismal view of both human agency and human nature to believe that we will continue to live in the future much as we live today.

None of these three lies is as brazen and damaging as Trump’s big lie. But they’re all being used by Republican candidates in these last weeks before the midterms.

2. They claim that inflation is due to Biden’s spending, and wage increases

3. They say Democrats voted to hire an army of IRS agents who will audit and harass the middle class

'Two-bit goon' Trump ignites furious backlash for demanding U.S. Jews act more like Evangelicals

Trump berates the Jews and applauds Israel. 66% of Jew live and practice Judaism outside of Israel. Israel isn’t a Jewish State but a multicultural political Apartheid State increasingly dominated by the religious Right who Trump feeds off in order to pay his legal costs.

Early Sunday the former president lashed out at U.S. Jews on Truth Social for not being enough like Evangelical Christians — and immediately was attacked for what one Jewish group called “unabashed antisemitism.” According to Trump, “No President has done more for Israel than I have. Somewhat surprisingly, however, our wonderful Evangelicals are far more appreciative of this than the people of the Jewish faith, especially those living in the U.S. Those living in Israel, though, are a different story – Highest approval rating in the World, could easily be P.M.! U.S. Jews have to get their act together and appreciate what they have in Israel – Before it is too late!”

Floods in Victoria are uncommon. Here’s why they’re happening now – and how they compare to the past

Why doesn’t Victoria have as many floods?

Victoria’s claim to fame in disasters is that it’s the most bushfire-prone region in the world (followed by California and Greece).

Fire risk also comes from climate. Victoria’s temperate climate means dry summers and less rain than its northern counterparts – around 520 millimetres of rain a year falls on average in Melbourne, compared to 1175mm a year in Sydney and 1149mm in Brisbane. Up north, rain tends to fall intensely, whereas Victoria’s rain tends to fall more as drizzle.

What’s different this time? September was wetter and colder than usual in Victoria, which meant the ground was already saturated in many areas. Colder weather means less water evaporates. Together, that made the state primed for floods.

For a flood to happen, you need a high rate of run-off, where rain hits saturated soils and flows overland rather than sinking in, as well as intense rains in a short period.

Rain has fallen across almost all of Australia’s mainland in the last two weeks. Our rain events are usually regional – not national like this.

Federation: A colonial view – » The Australian Independent Media Network

The most “basic flaw in Australian nationalism was its view of race.” (Alomes, 1988:30).

Perhaps then, national identity was enshrined in the White Australia policy: Upon the very isolation of this vast island continent … a unique human experiment might be attempted. As with nowhere else upon the globe, here a distinct biological community might be established, maintained and nurtured within a single geographic entity. If the indigenous peoples continued their perceived decline towards extinction and other migrant races were excluded or expelled, a ‘pure race’ could logically result. From such a vision, the idea of a ‘White Australia’ was born – a society where national boundaries conformed to racial ones – and by the time of Federation, this was no longer so much a matter of debate as a nation-wide article of faith. (Cited in Evans et al, 1997, p 26).

The rise of Religious Nationalism is detrimental to the principles of Democracy

India’s Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP, has more members than most countries have people.

The unit’s latest report says there has been “a serious deterioration in the quality of democracy under leader Narendra Modi, whose Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party has presided over increased intolerance and sectarianism towards Muslims and other religious minorities” and that a failure to “crack down on the persecution of religious and other minorities by Hindu nationalists continues to weigh on India’s democracy score”.

To rise from the fringes of Indian politics to become the world’s biggest party has been a stunning achievement. But can Indian democracy flourish with a political behemoth like the BJP?

Will Israel face Democratic pushback over racist politician Itamar Ben-Gvir? | The Electronic Intifada

A man points with an Israeli flag behind him

Itamar Ben-Gvir, a member of Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, even before he pulled pulled a gun Thursday evening and tweeted for Israeli forces to “kick the crap out of the enemy” in Israeli-occupied Sheikh Jarrah.

While in Sheikh Jarrah, he also shouted, “If they throw stones, shoot them.”

Though some continue to claim that Ben-Gvir has moderated his positions over the years, he remains imbued with both fanaticism and narcissism. “Over the last year I’ve been on a mission to save Israel,” Ben-Gvir recently told journalists.

“Millions of citizens are waiting for a real right-wing government. The time has come to give them one.”

Polls indicate that Religious Zionism could potentially be the third largest party in the Knesset.

Democrats and Republicans alike can be expected to keep the military aid to Israel flowing no matter what transpires on 1 November. All outcomes point to the continuation of apartheid for Palestinians.

In Israel, the Star of David is fast becoming the equivalent of the Swastika

Itamar Ben Gvir is thriving off a national discourse that allows him to accomplish what his predecessors could not: bringing Kahanism to the mainstream.

There will be no victories against Itamar Ben Gvir. Politics is about making coalitions and isolating rivals, and the right has been skillful in putting aside its public ideological conflicts in order to organize and take over power. The left, with all its fragmentation and purism, is abetting its own isolation.

Amid this setting, Ben Gvir and his allies have stormed through the door opened by Netanyahu, and they are here to stay. Ben Gvir is now a symptom that has turned into a cause: as Palestinian citizens rise up to assert their rights, more Jewish-Israelis are turning to candidates who promise to further shrink the country’s democratic space and champion the fight against shared living. In some twisted way, Kahane — who predicted this choice would come — was right.

Another U-turn as PM Liz Truss fights for her job

Britain’s new finance minister Jeremy Hunt has signalled further reversals from Prime Minister Liz Truss and said the PM has made mistakes as she battles to keep her job.

Just over a month into her term, Ms Truss fired Kwasi Kwarteng as her chancellor of the exchequer on Friday (local time) and scrapped parts of their controversial economic package.

Ms Truss has turned to Mr Hunt to help salvage her premiership less than 40 days after taking office.

The move and Mr Hunt’s decisive statements have led political commentators to question ‘Who’s in charge?’ and whether the prime minister has killed her own authority.

Israel Authorizes Military to Kill Palestinians With Drones in the West Bank – scheerpost.com

Killer Robots the new dogs of war are on the drawing cards as well

Marjorie Cohn writes about the most recent Israeli military order in the West Bank, which Hamas calls “a dangerous step.”

Commanders of the Israeli Occupying Forces (IOF) have been authorized to use armed drones to kill Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, with the approval of Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Aviv Kohavi.

Hamas called the order “a dangerous step” and urged Palestinians “to continue resisting the Israeli occupation with all means possible until they regain their legitimate rights.”

The authorization to expand the use of killer drones coincides with “a significant rise in shooting attacks and massive gunfire during arrest raids, specifically in the northern West Bank cities of Jenin and Nablus,” according to The Jerusalem Post. On September 28, the IOF killed four Palestinians and injured dozens more during protests in Jenin.

Since as early as 2008, the Israeli Air Force has been killing Palestinians in Gaza with drones. They have also been used to fire gas bombs and live rounds in occupied Jerusalem. Although drones have been employed for surveillance, this is the first time armed drones will be utilized in the occupied West Bank. Drones comprise 80 percent of the total flight hours in the Israeli Air Force.
