US President Donald Trump subverted official foreign policy for his personal gain, undermined American national security and engaged in an unprecedented attempt to obstruct an impeachment investigation, according to a pivotal report released by Democrats.
The report by the Democrat-controlled House Intelligence Committee, released on Tuesday (Wednesday Australian time), provides a likely blueprint for forthcoming articles of impeachment against Trump over his dealings with Ukraine.

Amid the squabbling over audit standards and the fineries of interpretation, it is always open to government to simply insist all companies over a certain size report fully and uniformly. This might do the Big Four out of some business but it would bring the tax dollars in. After all, if business people wish to enjoy the protection of the corporate veil, with that should come accountability and transparency. Otherwise, just don’t incorporate.

The declining performance of Australian school students is in the spotlight again. But is there anything governments can do to arrest the decline?
According to the latest results from PISA 2018, the average reading levels of Australian 15-year-olds fell by the equivalent of three-quarters of a year of school since 2000. Mathematics levels fell by one-and-a-quarter years of school since 2003. And science levels fell by almost a year of school since 2006. Very few countries recorded such large falls in performance.

Some of the Trump agenda is standard for a Republican president. White-collar criminal prosecutions have hit a 33-year low. The Justice Department defends state laws that could kick thousands off the voting rolls. The National Labor Relations Board is now more sympathetic to employers than unions. And military spending is on track to reach the same levels as during the height of the Iraq War.
But he’s gone further.

But despite the bulk of scientific evidence connecting drought, water shortages, heat waves and bushfires to climate change, Jones manages to consistently link these issues to claims that climate change is “a hoax”, and “there’s no evidence whatsoever to support [it]”.
Since August, Jones hasn’t interviewed any climate scientists, but he has given a platform to climate science denier Christopher Monckton, climate sceptic Peter Ridd and fossil fuel advocate Bjorn Lomborg.
He has also suggested that the government secretly wants the cattle of drought-stricken farmers to die because reduced methane emissions would help it reach its Paris target.
