Citizens’ Social Media can provide an Antidote to Propaganda and Disinformation

On the one hand are the mainstream corporate social media, which, for all their faults, have in fact deplatformed people like Donald Trump. And on the other hand, we have alt-right social media, which fosters bigotry.

The result is we miss out on innovations in platform governance that both go beyond the corporate model and actually do a very good job at marginalizing hate speech and undermining surveillance capitalism.

Record profits, but gas companies warn we could be crying poor

gas companies

Michaella Cash is fighting for the gas not to be capped unless greater production is allowed. No mention of the record profits being made though. Capping profits or taxing them appropriately won’t scare the miners off. Her argument avoids suggesting that the gas companies might just be “crying poor”. They fell into line in West Australia, didn’t they?

As the federal government weighs its options for regulating the gas market to bring down soaring power prices, exporters of Australian gas, riding high on record profits, have fired a warning shot.

LNG, gas

With an election 3 years away and an Opposition leader like Peter, Dutton Albanese seems to be happy playing politics by doing nothing and letting things get worse so he can play hero and make them better a little later on when he really needs to look good. He after all enough capital behind him given Morrison’s disastrous fall from grace. The ALP showed in WA that mining companies fall into line even when hard decisions are made. Michaela Cash can be found crowing for the “miners” claiming you can’t cap unless you increase production and pollute the planet even more. The LNP mindset is what’s destroying the planet?

The solution to the gas crisis and rising energy bills is a domestic reservation policy, like in WA. Why is this being ignored, asks Rex Patrick?

WA has reliable electricity, affordable gas, a reliable supply, and none of the chaos we’re seeing in the eastern states”.

The policy was quite controversial when first rolled out.

There was much gnashing of teeth, threats to sovereign risks, or threats [that] there won’t be any further investment.”, he said.

Industry didn’t like it at the time but now, it’s seen as a wonderful initiative and, across the board, it’s accepted by industry – both the oil and gas industry itself, but also other industries that are downstream users of it.”

He then went on to point out something our Federal leaders don’t seem to have grasped.

Obviously, producers of gas in the east wouldn’t like [a reservation policy], but Australian national interest and the people of Australia must come first”.

That’s how it should be. Prime Minister Albanese needs to get that into his head and take action accordingly.

William J. Ripple et al. writing in BioScience warn that we are deep into a climate emergency, which they call “code red on planet earth.”

They point to the increased frequency and severity of weather-related disasters, producing “untold human suffering.” Human-driven global heating, especially in the Arctic, which is warming four times faster than the world average, has disrupted the stability of the jet stream. It sometimes jumps far north, and sometimes like a moebius strip it folds back on itself, producing deadly heat waves in unlikely places like Vancouver and drawing the monsoons up to flood Pakistan in biblical proportions. It couldn’t possibly be that DePape had been driven to extremes by a firehose diet of lies — all laid out on his personal blog, where he ranted against transgender people and Jewish people, and mucked around in conspiracies, including that an alien race of lizards has infiltrated society, albeit mostly Democrats.

It had to be something else, something the far-right finds abhorrent, even evil. Musk’s post was in response to Hillary Clinton, one of the far-right’s most hated figures. Clinton had tweeted Saturday, attaching a Times article about DePape’s online ravings: “The Republican Party and its mouthpieces now regularly spread hate and deranged conspiracy theories. It is shocking, but not surprising, that violence is the result. As citizens, we must hold them accountable for their words and the actions that follow.

Weed Apartheid in Israel and Palestine

In bars and cafes across Israel, the air is thick with cannabis smoke. For years, smoking weed has been socially permissible in Israel despite being technically illegal. Patio tables in cities like Tel Aviv are dotted with people openly rolling joints and lighting up without a second thought. Ironically, smoking pot is tolerated in more public places in Israel than in countries like Canada, where recreational cannabis is legal. In Israel’s trendy cafes and middle-class Jewish neighborhoods, police often turn a blind eye.

As is true of many of the freedoms enjoyed by Israeli citizens, however, the open consumption of cannabis stops at Israel’s separation wall, beyond which Palestinians are economically, militarily, and legally denied many of their most basic rights.

While there is a budding cannabis culture in the West Bank — tobacco stores there openly sell weed paraphernalia like rolling papers and grinders — Palestinians, who live under military rule, face serious legal jeopardy if they are caught firing up.

Could Russia collapse?

So is it speculative to talk about a future Russian collapse? Yes. Is there evidence it is imminent? No. But in many ways that’s the problem: when authoritarian regimes implode, they tend to do so very quickly, and with little warning.

Hence in the Russian case, it’s important to consider all possible eventualities, even if they might appear implausible at the moment.

And, if nothing else, it’s always better to be pleasantly surprised than blindsided by events we inconveniently decided not to foresee.

The Stochastic Ex-President: How Trump set up the Pelosis for Attack

President Joe Biden noted Friday evening concerning the assailant who fractured Paul Pelosi’s skull with a hammer in the Pelosi home in San Francisco that “that the same chant was used by this guy that they have in custody that was used on January 6, the attack on the U.S. Capitol.” Both that attacker and the insurgents chanted “Where’s Nancy Pelosi?” That is, the president suggested, the attack on the Pelosis was a continuation by other means of the violence that Donald Trump unleashed on January 6, 2021.

Daniel Andrews and Matthew Guy at ABC Radio Melbourne after their 2018 campaign debate.

However, what we are witnessing is Matthew Guy in opposition being given more time than any other opposition leader on Peter Costello’s Ch9 presented as News. When will this free time be declared a political donation because his fake promises are certainly not news or information?

At the time of writing, with only a few weeks to go, there is still no agreement between the parties for even one leaders’ debate on radio, TV or at a community forum. Senior ministers and their shadows ought similarly to be committing to open public contests where voters have an opportunity to speak directly to those who seek to govern our lives.

A Global Shift

The Military Industrial Complex Strikes Again – scheerpost.com

At the start of the Ukraine war, Biden promised not to launch World War III. He broke that promise, by flooding Ukraine with weapons, CIA operatives and some special forces. To call this reckless is an understatement. Biden’s refusal to use his considerable weight to promote peace negotiations killed thousands of Ukrainians and Russians, will likely kill many more, and also endangers the lives of billions of other people, worldwide – 5.3 billion from nuclear-winter-induced starvation, who would suffer a slow, agonizing death. And I’m not talking about the canard that Russia may use a low-yield nuclear device on the battlefield. I’m talking about Moscow and Washington determining that they really are in a hot war and the long-range, high-yield nuclear missiles that could then begin to fly.

In that sense, Trump and the Republican fascists are not doing anything new. Sinclair Lewis famously warned that fascism would come to America wrapped in a flag and carrying cross. That was prophetic; one can’t expect Lewis to have predicted the MAGA hats. Instead of running away from Trump and what he represents, tens of millions of white Americans are instead cheering him on as their herald, hero, and savior. Such mass delusions are a defining feature of fascism and other such destructive political ideologies and visions.

America is being consumed by a compulsion towards self-destruction. Time is running out. Will the American people choose life or death? They will soon find out.

Dutton fail is to not talk of the change he helped create

The difference between a Secular Education in a Democratic Society and the Education a Coalition demands, isn’t one that recognizes cultural, sexual, racial, or physical diversity or change. It’s one that rather demands Assimilation, uniformity parental control and acceptance of a social order that has continued from the inherited past. A unifying secular democratic education threatens that. Dutton’s education is assimilation, generational integration with the past and not problem-solving is what he’s talking about when he says “discipline”, “respect” ” and  “orderly” classrooms.

Dutton’s education doesn’t question the generationally handed down norms youth no longer feel are fit for purpose in the world they experience. So one way or another they problem-solve to survive in a world that doesn’t recognize their issues. Parents are as frustrated and can no longer find the time to service their needs because gone are the days of one-income families of 4 last seen 50 years ago.

The process of learning and problem-solving starts with questioning our patterned institutional behaviours and cultural beliefs lending them support. Cultures, patterns of behaviours handed down through the generations which may have once served a majority of us well may no longer today and no longer deserve “respect” but change today. Learning isn’t acceptance, it’s systemic and progressive problem-solving moving forward. Labour accepts Australia’s multicultural diversity united in an institutional system of secularism.  A Democracy significantly different from what Dutton is talking about. Learning for him is acceptance of the past and its benefits for a shrinking and fewer fewer Australians who still remain largely white and privileged.

“Where the teachers lead the instruction and are supported to have orderly classrooms, where students learn respect, discipline, and ‘how to think’ not ‘what to think’.”

Dutton hangs hat on energy scepticism, cost of living – not details

Dutton

One wonders if Dutton flew to the US to tell Murdoch he’d support his illegal investment in Israeli-occupied Syria, Genie Oil. How on earth could he remain a clean energy sceptic given what we have witnessed globally about the ineffectiveness of fossil fuels to service the world’s energy needs? Australia among all the world’s nations is positioned to be the world’s biggest renewable energy provider. Political donations obviously remain the biggest determinant on policy. When will Murdoch’s media support be officially evaluated and counted as an LNP donation?

Clean energy scepticism has become a defining issue for the Coalition under Opposition Leader Peter Dutton who made it the main point of policy difference in his first budget reply speech.
