Michael Pascoe: Morrison’s ‘net zero’ is that trust and integrity thing again

Scott Morrison climate

Morrison Shoed the French What Trust and Integrity Means

You can only trust the whole of a building, institution or government by the integrity of its parts. Thus the whole weeks-long circus of Australia, Glasgow and “net zero” collapses. A political promise – and it’s no more than that – of net zero by 2050 can’t have integrity if it relies in its structure on carbon capture and storage, explicitly supporting fossil fuels, and potentially very rortable payments to farmers for burying carbon. And then it gets worse.

Berejiklian says Maguire was part of her ‘love circle’ but was not significant enough to declare – will this wash with ICAC?

Why someone as renowned for competence, honesty and political astuteness as Berejiklian should make such an obvious blunder as failing to declare her relationship with Maguire is inexplicable (although on Friday, she said she would not change her decision if she had her time again). She has paid – and will continue to pay – a very heavy price for neglecting to make an admission that would not have had many, if any, deleterious consequences. It is clear Berejiklian realised what was coming would be very damaging and decided to preempt a messy end by resigning at the start of October. It is also clear much of the criticism of ICAC for “establishing a parallel system of rough justice, in which the presumption of innocence and equality before the law count for nothing” was ill-informed.

The hypocrisy of Turnbull’s climate commentary – » The Australian Independent Media Network

Who the fuck is Andrew Wicks? The Nation’s Hangman? Someone who never forgives nor forgets and simply bears a grudge? Is he voice of ISIS fundamentalism in Australia? Fraser, Hewson, and Turnbull all gave up their membership of the LNP and the LNP never forgave them. Wicks sounds more extreme right wing than left. Sadly more LNP more Abbott, more Dutton than Australian. Wicks seemingly stereotypes individuals by their “nature” and not by their history or social context. They are simply good, bad and born that way, immutable.

Sadly, we know how the story ends. If we’re happy to rally behind him to fight a more contemporary evil, we should not forgive, nor forget.

U.S. Billionaire Wealth Surged by 70 Percent, or $2.1 Trillion, During Pandemic

To put this extraordinary wealth growth in perspective, the $2.1 trillion gain over 19 months by U.S. billionaires is equal to: 60 percent of the $3.5 trillion ten-year cost of President Biden’s Build Back Better plan. The entire $2.1 trillion in new revenues over ten years approved by the House Ways and Means Committee to help pay for President Biden’s Build Back Better (BBB) investment plan.

Right-wing media furious over Democratic proposal to tax billionaires | Media Matters for America

Bezos Musk taxing billionaires

Scott Morrison gave millions to an Irish billionaire and built him a 4500km digital cable across the pacific. He called it “Foreign Aid”. Now that billionaire wants to sell his company Digicel and China is very interested. So Morrison has now given Telstra  a “No Recourse  $2.1bn Loan” of public money, our money, to Telstra a private corporation outbid China. How about that for Corporate Welfare?  Yes, that’s a $2.1bn Australian dollar boost to shareholders who don’t need to pay it back. Does Australia even know about Morrison’s lagesse?

President Joe Biden and Democrats have been circling a plan to tax billionaires, and right-wing media are furious.

Will Israel now call these 21 of it’s own citizen organizations “Domestic Terrorists”? They don’t call Israeli settlers illegally occupying Palestinian land terrorists. Israel insults the intelligence of a planet.

Twenty-one Israel-based civil society groups on Sunday joined Palestine defenders around the world in condemning the Israeli government’s labeling of six Palestinian advocacy groups as terrorist organizations, calling the move “an act of cowardice.”

Australia’s stumbling, last-minute dash for climate respectability doesn’t negate a decade of abject failure

The Embarrassment of it all!  Is we have one LNP but seemingly two governments that for 8 years have been in step and still march to the same silent tune. However their public performance has left us all aghast!

A week before a major international meeting aimed at saving life on Earth, the Morrison government has apparently seen the light. Granted, it’s a start. But the new targets are less than the bare minimum required. The government’s last-minute jump on the bandwagon is not quite the Damascene conversion it would have the public believe. Will Australia’s stumbling, last-minute dash towards climate respectability be well-received in Glasgow? Don’t hold your breath.

She knew that ICAC knew where the skeletons were buried after the initial silent and private investigation was done and  also knew it would be “publicly tested”. So she acted first. However NSW voters deserve “transparency” from all its politicians.

Unfortunately, Goward Is Not Alone Here But while it’s all well and good to point the finger at Goward, it’s also important to remember that she is far from the only Australian who shares this view. Not only did the Australian Financial Review publish it, but thousands of — presumably upper-middle class — Australians will read it and continue to hold this belief that the “proles” are villains that are tearing down our great country, rather than our neighbours and friends who deserve support.

When offered the title of Pivot of the Pacific whe he was PM. Europhile Abbott turned his back preferring to build monuments in France, shirtfront Putin, become a member of NATO and hail China as his new bestie. Today he shows what a self interested Pillock he’s always been. Don’t be surprised if he doesn’t want his old job back and he’s putting on a show for Rupert. He hasn’t defended France he’s cheered Boris on and he’s giving Xi the bird. Has Australia ever seen a worse effort by an ex PM playing  Statesman in it’s history?

No one can stop him. He can barely stop himself. The former Australian prime minister, Tony Abbott, seems to be everywhere, fighting the poor cause. At the very least, he is everywhere with the press cameras, the niggling concerns, the irritations that make it into the twenty-four-hour news cycle before sinking with toxic charm. He is the perfect ingredient in a stew of conflict, the agitator, the irritant.

Peter Ridd loses High Court case over climate scepticism censure

Dr Peter Ridd failed to overturn James Cook University’s decision to sack him.

Days after the PM and the Deputy PM declared Facebook and social media sites will be forced to limit Free Speech the sitting idiot Minister in charge of Education Alan Tudge declares Universities need to be forced to open it up. The Morrison government is certainly not a team that seems to know what it’s doing. They seem more like the Three Stooges.

Peter Ridd was politically financed and supported at great cost to have his dismissal overturned and he failed. Now the government wants to overthrow the Court’s rulings by changing the law because it offends Tudge. There is something very Trumpster about Tudge’s wants, actions, and personal history and it’s not representative of a Democracy that’s for certain.

Universities face the prospect of further rules to protect academics’ free speech after Education Minister Alan Tudge raised concerns about a High Court decision upholding the sacking of marine physicist and climate change sceptic Peter Ridd by James Cook University. The decision ends Dr Ridd’s four-year legal battle with JCU after he was censured and ultimately sacked for challenging his colleagues’ views on climate change and the Great Barrier Reef, along with the university’s attempts to discipline him.

News Corp’s Andrew Bolt says his company’s climate campaign is ‘rubbish’ | News Corporation | The Guardian

Screenshot of Andrew Bolt on Sky News criticises the News Corp liftout on net zero

Andrew Bolt has had the rug “seemingly” pulled out from under his climate change denials by the very organization he works for and supports him. That should tell us it’s a marketing promotion boosting Morrison’s LNP, to seemingly change tack, on the promise of Net-Zero by 2050. For heaven’s sake we were notified weeks ago that this campaign for Scott was coming. Of course it’s is rubbish just as the Angus Taylor’s argument that Net-Zero doesn’t mean ” zero carbon emissions”. Slightly cleaner and more costly washed fossil fuels is then all they need do. Angus Taylor has guaranteed to fund CO2 emissions to the tune of $250bn if and when nobody else on the planet will.

As for Bolt’s argument that News Corp’s editorial change is “rubbish” well that’s simply posturing, a performance to appear balanced and make noise. All they are doing is what Philip Morris did when it announced it would “un-smoke the world” while still continuing to sell as much tobacco as possible along with the other added carcinogens or tar. Yes Bolt’s a participant because the campaign allows him the space to play the contrarian in the performance and repeat what it is he’s been doing for the past two decades maintaining his ego and crafted media identity little else. After all he can’t simply keep attacking Bruce Pascoe, Muslims, women and the ABC.

The prominent Murdoch commentator Andrew Bolt says News Corp Australia’s major editorial campaign to speed up climate action is “rubbish” and the “global warming propaganda” provides political cover for Scott Morrison. “Millions of Australian readers would have got a shock this morning when they picked up their Murdoch newspapers around the country,” Bolt told his Sky News Australia audience after the company published 16-page wraparounds in every tabloid.

The Right to Repair movement has gained significant traction in the past few years. Activists in the EU, US, and Australia aligned with the movement have helped spur the introduction and passage of legislation to force manufacturers to provide access to repair knowledge and tools.

France introduced an anti-waste law in 2020 that has created a repair index for electronics and appliances. Shoppers are now greeted with color-coded labels that define a product’s ease of reparability.

But it is also up to us. To find out more, and to learn what we can all do to combat the manipulation of Big Tech and help reduce e-waste, check out the Tech4Evil podcast.

Nationhood and the ‘Pure’ Race (part 4) – » The Australian Independent Media Network

Upon the very isolation of this vast island continent … a unique human experiment might be attempted. As with nowhere else upon the globe, here a distinct biological community might be established, maintained and nurtured within a single geographic entity. If the indigenous peoples continued their perceived decline towards extinction and other migrant races were excluded or expelled, a ‘pure race’ could logically result (Cited in Evans et al, 1997:26)

Interest subsequently increased in using evolution theory for justification of a strong state in Australia. It is this racialist concern with a distinctively Australian type that undergirded the White Australia Policy, which was sanctioned by the adoption of the Immigration Restriction Bill in 1901. Pettman comments that the: Imperialist and racist ideology drew on generations of conquest, slavery and exploitation, and on a whole language of black inferiority and white superiority, bolstered in the nineteenth century by the new sciences. This ideology proved useful and flexible in rationalising the bloody violence, dispossession and incarceration of Aboriginal people, necessary to clear the way for the white nation (Pettman, 1988:2). Jan Pettman notes that the Darwinist explanations of evolution asserted that given equal competition, the fittest societies would survive and the inferior would die out, and links the attempted and hastened destruction of Aboriginal societies based on this theory. The British, being industrious and capital driven, accepted themselves as superior to the ‘improvident’ Aborigines and accepted that as racially doomed and undesirable were destined to

The police knock on the door and ask Vladimir if they can speak to his housemate. Vlad asks them if they have a search warrant and they say no, so he says go away. The police then say that they’re pretty sure they’ll be able to get one. At this point, Vlad goes public telling Sky News that he’s going to leave Australia on the first plane because we’ve reached a point where unelected bodies like the police can just get search warrants and dig up your whole back yard even though they have no evidence and you haven’t been convicted of anything and as such you’re entitled to the presume of innocence, so that means you’re an innocent man… And all right, his housemate was involved with some shady characters and he hasn’t seen him either but there’s no evidence of wrongdoing so it’s completely terrible that the police would quest

Frydenberg’s mental health accusations against Andrews exposed as baseless

Tawdry attempts by federal Coalition ministers to vilify Victoria’s Premier have now been shown to lack a factual foundation, reports Alan Austin. CLAIMS BY FEDERAL Treasurer Josh Frydenberg that Victoria’s Labor Premier Daniel Andrews harmed the mental health of his constituents gained considerable traction last year. These were damaging to Andrews’ reputation and to his ability to manage the pandemic — which had caused far more deaths in Victoria than in the rest of the country. Data released last week by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) confirms that mental health actually improved dramatically in Victoria as a result of Andrews’ determined efforts. Andrews worked tirelessly last year to control the virus, limit the social dislocation and keep his constituents well-informed.

As a NSW premier falls and SA guts its anti-corruption commission, what are the lessons for integrity bodies in Australia?

The NSW ICAC is celebrated for exposing corruption across politics, including the now-convicted former Labor ministers Eddie Obeid and Ian Macdonald. But as the third Liberal premier to resign as a result of ICAC scrutiny since 1992, Berejiklian’s demise is almost certain to provoke a backlash. The news followed the South Australia parliament passing sweeping amendments to its own Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) last week, narrowing the scope of its operations and reducing its transparency. Get news curated by experts, not algorithms. Both events bring sharp focus to the right balance of powers for all such bodies, especially the long-awaited federal integrity commission, still in the works over two years after being promised by the Morrison government. However, South Australia’s reforms in particular point to why a political backlash against these important agencies would be extremely unwise.

But while many Australians have seen uniformed officers enforcing COVID restrictions as an overreach, especially in poor and culturally diverse communities, some Americans are more outraged than we are. Just as Australians don’t understand the American psyche when it comes to things like gun rights, many freedom loving Americans just do not get why most Australians have tolerated such harsh limits on their liberty during the pandemic. That’s despite the huge disparity in infection and death rates between the two countries.

Deciphering AUKUS: it’s not really about the submarines

Biden’s desire for an alliance against China in pursuit of a return to “rules-based order” — heavily slanted in favour of the West — has been oft-expressed. The south must be ruled out. But so too, it would seem, must be the EU. Germany is still dependent on exports to China for its prosperity, and the Belt and Road Initiative is increasing China-EU trade at a cracking pace.If the US doesn’t trust the EU regarding China, it would have a major interest in breaking any link between Australia and France, as the latter remains a Pacific power. It would have been ridiculous to mobilise NATO in the Indo-Pacific with the EU about to announce its own common defence plan. The US doesn’t want equals in its new alliance, but subordinates who look like equals. Australia has played that role for decades, knows it by heart. But the UK? Well, AUKUS from its end forms part of a new post-Brexit “global Britain” push. What could be more global than policing your old imperial waters? Does it actively want to do that? Maybe. Maybe not. But what it needs from the US is a free trade agreement.Biden had said that the UK was at the back of the queue, especially if Brexit wrecked the “Good Friday agree
