In keeping true to neo-liberal/Pentacostal win/lose principles, for Scooter to shine others must suffer. Covid is facing a resurgence in the US, and so is Trumpian politics | Robert Reich | The Guardian

Trump continues to stage rallies for his avid followers as he did last weekend in Phoenix, where he declared, “Our nation is up against the most sinister forces … This nation does not belong to them, this nation belongs to you.” Wrong. America belongs to all of us. And we all have a responsibility to protect its public health and its democratic institutions. The real sinister force is the Trump Republicans’ cynical exploitation of lies and anti-scientific rubbish to divide and divert us. Months ago, it seemed as if this darkness was behind us. It is not.

Why Aren’t Biden and the Democrats Going All Out for Democracy? | The Smirking Chimp

You’d think President Biden and the Democratic Party leadership would do everything in their power to stop Republicans from undermining democracy. Today we have all these serious constitutional transgressions and existential threats and this GG buffoon sits on his arse installing more corrupt politicians like cowboy beetroot water-rort Barnaby Joyce and sports-rort lying cowgirl Bridget McKenzie.

MSNBC Analyst Ticks Off Reasons Kavanaugh Is An Impeachable Sleaze

Normally I am not into Democrat-on-Democrat grousing, but one of the things that differentiates and frankly, distinguishes us from the GOP is our ability to handle criticism and self-reflection, resulting in actively seeking paths towards ethical enlightenment and improvement. While in no way should we ever, EVER allow the fascist, misogynistic Republican party off the hook for Brett Kavanaugh’s appointment to the highest court in the land, we can and should be actively trying to remove him now that we hold the tools to do so. Consider this list of reasons, spouted off by Elie Mystal — quite possibly the only human capable of pulling me out of vacation mode to write a post for work.

“Ye shall know them by their fruits” – » The Australian Independent Media Network

On Wednesday, 20 July, The Prime Minister did three radio interviews. During the third on Melbourne’s KIIS 101.1, he was asked by the host Jase Hawkins to apologise for the “nightmare” of the vaccine rollout. “Can you honestly say to me that the government has taken accountability?” he said. “Like, I have never heard the word ‘sorry’ – ‘guys you know what, sorry, we did screw it up, but we are getting it right now’.” For the entirety of the interview, Jase tried to elicit the word “sorry” from the Prime Minister. It was like trying to extract blood from a stone. He did, however, manage an admission of sorts that he was responsible for Australia being last on a list of nations well ahead of us with their vaccination programs.

The Anti-Family Party | The Smirking Chimp

Last Thursday, 39 million American parents began receiving a monthly child allowance ($300 per child under 6, and $250 per child from 6 through 17). It’s the biggest helping hand to American families in more than 85 years. They need it. Even before the pandemic, child poverty had reached post-war records. Even non-poor families were in trouble, burdened with deepening debt and missed payments. Most were living paycheck to paycheck – so if they lost a job, they and their kids could be plunged into poverty. It’s estimated that the new monthly child allowance will cut child poverty by more than half. But every single Republican in both the House and Senate voted against the measure.

Barnaby Has Already Achieved Net Zero! – » The Australian Independent Media Network

So Labor, it’s up to you. Barnaby has told us that they don’t have a plan and this is a problem for Scott Morrison – who we’re told wants to achieve net zero emissions at the same time as vaccinating the population. Both are to happen, “as soon as possible” which is a pretty ambitious plan for most of us, but it seems pretty pedestrian for a man like him who believes in miracles. Couldn’t we have at least one of them happening before it’s possible instead of waiting for the possible? Otherwise, where’s the miracle? sigh< Maybe I should just congratulate Barnaby for achieving net zero in politics and conclude that maybe the planet knows what its doing and when the cockroaches take over, it might be an improvement.

Do Assholes Know They’re Assholes? | The Smirking Chimp

I’m surely not the only person who has wondered how some of the high-profile assholes we all see all the time can behave the way they do in public? As with the bushfires, the pandemic has exposed Morrison for who he truly is. No Facebooked curries, no borrowing of chickens or mounting of heavy machinery, no be-medalled general nor tame premier can hide his vacuity and uselessness. Why So Much Wealth at the Top Threatens the US Economy | The Smirking Chimp

Why Debt is the official business of the economy

Seventy percent of the US economy depends on consumer spending. But wealthy people, who now own more of the economy than at any time since the 1920s, spend only a small percentage of their incomes. Lower-income people, who were in trouble even before the pandemic, spend whatever they have – which has become very little. In a very practical sense, the U.S. economy depends on the spending of most Americans who don’t have much to spend. That spells trouble ahead.

Our Biggest Enemy Isn’t China. It’s Right Here at Home. | The Smirking Chimp

The greatest danger we face today is not coming from China. It is our drift toward proto-fascism. We must be careful not to demonize China so much that we encourage a new paranoia that further distorts our priorities, encourages nativism and xenophobia, and leads to larger military outlays rather than public investments in education, infrastructure, and basic research on which America’s future prosperity and security critically depend. The central question for America—an ever more diverse America, whose economy and culture are rapidly fusing with the economies and cultures of the rest of the globe—is whether it is possible to rediscover our identity and our mutual responsibility without creating another enemy.

Sociopaths and why we elect them

The problem is that Critical Thinking is Democratic, slow, complex, reasoned, and solutions delivered from the bottom up. Neoliberalism is fast, simple, and laid on a foundation of division, fear, doubt, and simple solutions that only need to be promised not delivered from the top down. The best way to counter a sociopath isn’t another sociopath

The long-term solution – unlikely while vested interests find sociopaths useful – is to educate people to look beneath the surface. Most progressivists have intuitively practiced this all their lives. Educate everyone, particularly young people, to think critically, question everything they hear, and collect and weigh any evidence before accepting its veracity. Educate to raise intelligence, which steadily increased throughout the 20th Century… until neoliberalism dumbed us down, kept us anxious, and sold us stuff for (temporary) relief; repeat. While narcissistic sociopathy cannot be shifted, laboratory experiments suggest that conservative, fear-driven attitudes might be. So the answer is to educate to shift them early. And the best way to expose the Trumps and Qs of the world, researchers say, is to publicly counter their spin and find genuine leaders to support. It’s hard to argue with that. Where are they?

A few weeks ago, various Australian MPs were expressing their outrage at China for holding secret trials. I understood their concern. Secret trials are something that should be reserved for the enemies of capitalism and not something that those lefty Chinese should be engaging in.

Scott Morrison gained power through a lack of due diligence

Companies do due diligence on key appointments. Why not nations? Voters who pay attention in the Australian electorate are in the curious position in 2021 of realising that the present occupant of the office of Prime Minister Scott Morrison has been subject to minimal due diligence. Morrison assumed the role of Prime Minister in a backroom party spill just before the 2019 Election.
