Four Corners: Australia becomes US nuclear spear carrier in Asia – Pearls and Irritations

American soldier in uniform and civil man in suit shaking hands with Australian flag on background.

Four Corners last night showed how Australia is becoming ‘a proxy’ or is it ‘a patsy’ for the US in a possible conflict with China. Our actions invite a Chinese response. Sometimes I wonder why the Chinese bother about a reset in relations when we behave so foolishly at the behest of the US. China is not a threat to Australia but our ‘dangerous ally’ keeps goading China to provoke a war.

Last night Four Corners reported:

  • The US is preparing to deploy up to six nuclear capable B-52 bombers to northern Australia, a provocative move experts say is aimed squarely at China.
  • The bombers are part of a much larger upgrade of defence assets across northern Australia, including a major expansion of the Pine Gap intelligence base which will play a vital role in any conflict with Beijing.

A politically safe budget lacking in courage to tackle energy prices, fossil fuel profiteering, housing

Jim Chalmers and his budget

Unlike Abbott and Hockey’s first budget from hell was meant to prepare the way for sweeteners in three years’ time. It ended both their careers. It was hardly a model of responsibility over the next decade Morrison guaranteed that taking the nation’s debt from $300M to $900+ M without visible benefit. At least the debt under the ALP delivered us the NDIS.

Jim Chalmer’s first Federal Budget was delivered this week. Politically astute, yet containing few surprises or significant reform measures, it was a budget lacking in courage to tackle the big challenges. Kim Wingerei reports.

Greenwashed: how the new “Middle Arm” fossil fuel hub was rebranded green

Darwin’s Middle Arm project is about subsidising fossil fuels, not “clean energy” and “environmentally sustainable manufacturing.

They have dubbed it “green”, about “clean energy industries” and “environmentally sustainable manufacturing”; yet Darwin’s Middle Arm Sustainable Development Precinct is all about subsidising fossil fuels. Callum Foote reports.

Labor has announced a $1.5 billion Budget hand-out for the Middle Arm ‘Sustainable Development Precinct’ in the port of Darwin.

Public subsidies for fossil fuels already run at a heady clip of $10bn a year, if you include fuel subsidies. And despite all the greenwashing and tricky language over the development of a second port for Darwin, the Albanese government has just slotted the fossil fuel industry another $1.5bn, at least.

Ed Husic is a self-declared quantum nerd. “I want to make sure we’re at the front of the quantum pack,” the federal industry and science minister told a quantum commercialisation forum at CSIRO’s Lindfield site in Sydney. “It absolutely burns me, when I just recall how there were five countries in the 1940s that built their own computer, and we were one of them and we just gave it all away,” he said.

Sweet charity: how the big religions scripted a massive tax handout

Will the Albanese government act?

As Scott Morrison’s secret ministries saga demonstrates, Australia is still learning about the profound impact of a decade of highly partisan government, when once independent bodies came to be treated as the political property of the Coalition.

But will Labor — now back in control of the agency it created — take on the powerful vested interests that have benefitted from a decade of special treatment?

Organisations like the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference, a registered basic religious charity, are largely free from accountability.

Farhad Bandesh gets the letter – » The Australian Independent Media Network

This sadistic letter (see letter at the bottom of this article) is doing the rounds of Medevac survivors on Bridging Visas. It shows that Labor have yet to end the abuse meted out to those held offshore since 2013. This outrageous immigration stance reduces Labor to the low moral level of Dutton, Morrison and Abbott who used refugees as mere deterrents. Labor’s position is an electoral bonus for the Greens and Teal Independents.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s fake National Anti-Corruption Commission fails whistleblowersKangaroo Court of Australia

The key points of the fake National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) are:

1) Bare minimum protection for whistleblowers.

2) They have backflipped on their election promise for public hearings which will now only happen in exceptional circumstances.

3) Massive Breach of Open justice – This is also in part designed to intimidate whistleblowers from not coming forward.

“Massive achievement” but is the NACC anti-corruption commission missing some teeth? – Michael West

A federal integrity body is finally to become a reality. While it’s a significant achievement, there are shortfalls and political hurdles. Chalmers’ challenge just got a whole lot scarier

Dutton wants to focus on the Culture Wars I wonder Why?

The latest official data on Australia’s economy reveals serious structural problems making all workers poorer.

Chalmers’ challenge

The Treasurer will hand down a detailed federal budget next month which will reveal his intended strategies and expected outcomes. His priority must be to rectify wages, reform the tax system and shift the share of the nation’s booming revenues back into a fair balance.
This may take some years to accomplish fully. If he can get started in October, we will all be very “reasured”.

What this seems to indicate is back to the Rudd/Gillard future and that comprehensive Carbon Trading Scheme that Tony Abbott’s LNP set out to destroy by calling it a tax. Climate Change Authority Media ReleaseReleased today, the Climate Change Authority’s Review of International Offsets finds the international carbon market is still evolving in response to the Paris Agreement and calls for publication of a National Carbon Market Strategy that makes the most of this opportunity for Australia to accelerate ambition on emissions reduction. The review finds that while carbon is priced and traded in Australia, the market is fragmented, inefficient and complicated.

To Solve Australia’s Cost-of-Living Crisis, Labor Should Tax Superprofits

The very fact the ALP beleves in Democracy, Bi partisan Government, and Government for everyone guarantees there won’t be any clawback from the rich on behalf of the poor. It’s a formula for the ever increasing wealth and income gaps to continue.

Inflation is eroding paychecks and rising interest rates are hurting people with mortgages. Anthony Albanese’s government could defend workers’ living standards by taxing the rich and controlling prices, but Labor’s neoliberal orthodoxy stands in the way.

Why An Emissions Target Is The Work Of Satan… – » The Australian Independent Media Network

Finally, I’d just like everyone to remember the basic strategy that the Coalition will adopt over the next few weeks. If Labor and The Greens reach any sort of compromise, then it’ll be because they’re a coalition and if you vote for one it’s the same as voting for the other, but if they can’t agree, then Peter Dutton will move a motion of no confidence in the government because they can’t get their legislation through the Senate.

Ok, an Opposition leader would have to be pretty stupid to do that. So how long do you think it will be before he does?

Labor moves quickly on anti-corruption body, but who’s watching the watchers?

Australia's corruption score plummets to shameful new low

The Morrison Government made great strides in politicizing the APS by appointing their choice as heads of departments on politics rather than merit now AG Dreyfus is confronted with the consequences of that.

Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus has moved quickly to set up a task force to get Labor’s federal anti-corruption body off the ground, but the staff selection process for his pilot taskforce has raised…

So, the Taskforce set to design the NACC will come from the same set of people the NACC will be tasked to investigate. With not even one person coming from outside the APS to provide a check or balance.

And forget about appealing, the AGP told Dr Holt, you can’t:

‘I note that you have requested to appeal the decisions regarding the appointments made to the NACC taskforce. As these appointments were transfers of current APS employees at their substantive levels, this is not an appealable process.’

It is probably worth noting that recruitment is not likely something attended to by the Minister, but rather by the public service. The secretary of the Attorney-General’s Department is Katherine Jones, one of three Morrison Government appointments of three key public service heads, made by Scott Morrison just under a year ago, on 22 July 2021. The appointments were not without controversy,

So where now for the Right?

We are witnessing a monumental disconnect among those who define themselves as of the Right.

A stark example is the discombobulation of members of the Conservative Party of the UK, who abandoned former Prime Minister Boris Johnson in droves, suggesting the British Right has lost all faith in its philosophy.

The same is true of the Liberal Party of Australia, which, to a casual observer, appears devoid of political relevance.

Hitting the green accelerator: Labor’s renewables target ambitious but achievable – Michael West

Jim Chalmers and Anthony Albanese

Unless the US and the world’s biggest corporations get on board and assist China and India the gesture is a token even if admirable. The biggest corporations are the biggest polluters and have ignored governments for years.

Prepare for a great acceleration in renewable energy build, despite the policy fracas between Labor and the Greens. To achieve its 82% target, Labor has to build renewables around five times faster than the past two decades, and build storage at about 10 times the rate of the past five years. Energy economist Bruce Mountain offers a blueprint.

Scrap the digital workhouse. An open letter to Tony Burke. – » The Australian Independent Media Network

We know you are new in your job, Tony and face not only the huge demands of your portfolio but a backlog of catastrophic ineptitude and deceit left you by a Morrison government whose criminal negligence of health and welfare was rivalled only by its pandering to corporate oligarchs and its bent for wholesale corruption, but can you, please, reconsider Pbas?

Pbas is the points based system which the Coalition was keen to inflict on job-seekers, a jobactive revamp it promoted as “more flexible” than mandatory job application. It’s not. It’s Liberal propaganda designed to pillory job seekers for being out of work. Lazy dole-bludgers. Political point-scoring. Baked into it is unconscionable, sadistic cruelty and victim blaming. It’s the antithesis of everything we’ve come to associate with Labor.
