The Monsters of American Capitalism | The Smirking Chimp

If this past week presents any single lesson, it’s the social costs of greed. Capitalism is premised on greed but also on guardrails – laws and norms — that prevent greed from becoming so excessive that it threatens the system as a whole.

Yet the guardrails can’t hold when avarice becomes the defining trait of an era, as it is now. Laws and norms are no match for the possibility of raking in billions if you’re sufficiently ruthless and unprincipled.

Anti-China rhetoric damaging to Liberals – Michael West

The Liberals have a history conducting politics at a cultural level Morrison saw  political advantage of dividing the nation during the Cronulla riots and he continued to apply it with “stop the boats”. Multiculturalism was never an LNP value as much as it was a political opportunity. The Lebanese Muslims Chinese Africans Indigenous Australians all felt the two-face sting of the LNP handshake. If and when for a moment they were seen as an economic benefit it came with a smile quite readily followed by a political slap in the face. Dutton was a master at spreading Liberal hate.

The Liberals have been urged to rebuild the party’s relationship with members of Australia’s Chinese community as a key priority in the wake of its election defeat.

The Perils of Pious Neoliberalism

Amid extreme wealth inequality, Vijay Prashad considers the appeal of reactionary new religious traditions that measure salvation in the present balance of your bank account.   By Vijay Prashad

The International Labour Organisation’s “Global Wage Report 2022–23” tracks the horrendous collapse of real wages for billions of people around the planet.

The gaping distance between the incomes and wealth of 99 percent of the world’s population from the incomes and wealth of the billionaires and near-trillionaires who make up the richest 1 percent is appalling.

During the pandemic, when most of the world has experienced a dramatic loss in their livelihoods, the 10 richest men in the world have doubled their fortunes. This extreme wealth inequality, now entirely normal in our world, has produced immense and dangerous social consequences.

If you take a walk in any city on the planet, not just in the poorer nations, you will find larger and larger clusters of housing that are congested with destitution.

They go by many names:

bastisbidonvilledaldongnehfavelasgecekondukampung kumuh, slums and Sodom and Gomorrah. Here, billions of people struggle to survive in conditions that are unnecessary in our age of massive social wealth and innovative technology.

Israel America’s ally turned it’s back on aiding Ukraine

Virtually no country in Africa, Asia or the Middle East has rallied to Biden’s cause of defending Ukraine. The lack of enthusiasm has many roots, but one of them is a strong sense that the U.S. is not principled on this issue and is merely pursuing a narrow national interest. They do not see Washington as actually upholding a rules-based international order. And they are correct in this assessment.

Hannity Says He Didn’t Believe Election Lies Despite Pushing Them on His Show – Truthout

Fox News host Sean Hannity, who invited guests on his program to peddle false claims of election fraud in the weeks after former President Donald Trump lost the 2020 presidential election to President Joe Biden, told a courtroom on Wednesday that he never believed the lies that he perpetuated on his show.

Hannity made his comments during a pre-trial court hearing in Delaware. Dominion Voting Systems, which supplied voting machines in several states and which has been falsely accused of interfering with the 2020 election by Trump loyalists, is suing Fox News for defamation over its role in disseminating lies about their product.

Global coal use in 2022 is reaching an all-time high, but Australia is bucking the trend

In a year marked by record-smashing floods, fires, heatwaves and droughts, the urgent need to act on climate change has never been more apparent. And yet, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has found coal burning for electricity generation will reach record levels this year.

Why? Largely because rising natural gas prices, due to sanctions on Russia, is driving demand for less expensive coal to fill the gap in energy supply. The report finds Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has “sharply altered the dynamics of coal trade, price levels, and supply and demand patterns in 2022”.

The good news is the world’s coal use has peaked – and will soon rapidly decline. Australia is leading the way, and the rest of the world must soon follow.

The corporatisation of General Practice – Pearls and Irritations

GP doctor taking senior man's blood pressure in surgery room having a check up.

The very nature and history of Corporatisation suggests the maximising of profit over and above individual care. Take banking and law as case studies.

Proposals to reform how Medicare supports primary care also need to take account of the changed ownership structure of general practice.

Much of the information cited in the article came from the grey literature, as there are few formal studies of the issue. In brief the material identified suggested that:

  • continuity of care diminishes as practice size increases, while pathology ordering is positively associated with practice size;
  • patient satisfaction is lower in corporatised practices compared with traditional ones;
  • non-traditional providers performed worse than traditional ones on a range of performance indicators related to cost and efficiency, access, and clinical effectiveness.

However, one Australian study showed no difference between types of practice in the management of patients with diabetes.

The authors concluded that “while there is little Australian evidence that worse clinical care is delivered in corporate-owned general practice, there is no evidence that care is better… more Australian research and potentially regulation are needed to track and control what [changing patterns of ownership] means for patient care in terms… of patient experience [and] health outcomes”.

Shakespeare’s Portia never made it to Israel

Last June, an Israeli Jew, Ya’akov Cohen, was convicted of violently assaulting Said Musa, a Palestinian citizen of Israel, in the coastal city of Bat Yam during the unrest of May 2021. The prosecution sought a sentence of 4-7 years for Cohen, 31, who kicked Musa while he was lying helpless on the ground after having been dragged out of his car by several Jewish assailants, including Cohen. But the judge decided to sentence him to only 15 months in prison, justifying his ruling by arguing that Cohen “believed in the moment that the victim of the crime [Musa] was trying to carry out a car-ramming attack.”

At the end of November, an Arab man, Adham Bashir, was convicted of taking part in an attack on Mor Janashvili, a Jewish Israeli, in Akka during the same period in May 2021. The prosecution requested that Adham Bashir, who threw a stone at Janashvili’s car and broke its windshield in a group attack, be sentenced to 10-13 years; the three judges agreed to the request and sentenced him to 10 years in prison. The judge explained: “This was an ugly and dark attack that requires significant punishment.”

Australia has developed a habit over the years of offering a glimpse into the political future for other Western nations. Bob Hawke and Paul Keating served up a governing blueprint for Tony Blair’s New Labour. Santos given green light to drill 850 gas wells in Narrabri-Pilliga Forest area

A coal seam gas extraction site in the Pilliga Forest.

But on Tuesday, the tribunal – which manages native title applications and is not comprised of Aboriginal Australians – determined the group had failed to prove the gas project would have “grave and irreversible consequences for the Gomeroi people’s culture, lands and waters and would contribute to climate change”.

Tribunal president and judge John Dowsett said in his decision that Santos had negotiated in good faith and the benefits the Narrabri-Pilliga gas project would provide to the region and wider country significantly outweighed the Gomeroi people’s concerns.

Pilliga Forest spans more than 500,000 hectares in northern NSW and is recognised as one of the most important areas for biodiversity in eastern Australia. It is home to at least 300 native animal species and more than 900 plant species, and is the largest remaining area of native forest west of the Great Divide.
