Our Minister for Women misses the point….again – » The Australian Independent Media Network

Kelly is an improvement on her two predecessors in the role in that she is a woman and also a feminist. (Mind you, it would be hard to find someone worse than Abbott and Cash)

Meanwhile, family benefits have been cut, funding for legal aid has been slashed, refuges have closed, men’s help groups have folded, early intervention community programs have been defunded, over 100,000 are homeless, elder abuse is rampant, anti-bullying programs have been attacked, and women continue to be beaten, raped and killed.

It’s all very nice for high-flying women to empower each other but what about those women who are struggling to survive? They don’t need investment advice. They need a way to put food on the table and a roof over their children’s heads. They need to know that they have a place to be safe.

I agree that economic independence is a desirable goal that provides choices but Kelly seems to think that the only reason many women are not financially independent is because they just don’t understand how the system works.

We understand well enough, it’s just that the majority of women do not have enough left over to worry about whether to put it into superannuation or a negatively-geared property or shares.

Single parents don’t need lessons on economic literacy – they need practical help.

Victims of domestic violence don’t need advertising campaigns – they need safe havens, legal help, and paid DV leave.

It isn’t women that have to get smarter, it’s society that has to change.

Telstra and Optus’ week from hell was years in the making

Andy Penn announced plans to slash 8000 jobs on Wednesday. He was castigated by unions, admonished by politicians and shunned by investors as shares in the company he runs, Telstra, sank to within a whisker of record lows.

It’s hard to think it could have been much worse. Yet it’s debatable whether Penn even had the most difficult week in his industry.

Consider how the past few days have panned out for his counterpart at Optus, Allen Lew.

Optus was forced into a humiliating surrender of its World Cup streaming coverage, a key pillar of Lew’s overarching strategy. After failing to resolve ongoing technical problems with its broadcast, the No.2 carrier relinquished exclusivity over the prestigious tournament, at least for the group stages, to SBS.

Trump flips on North Korea, declaring country still an ‘extraordinary threat’ | US news | The Guardian

Donald Trump makes a statement before saying goodbye to Kim Jong-un in Singapore on 12 June.

Donald Trump has declared that North Korea still poses an “extraordinary threat” to the United States, just days after saying that the country’s nuclear program no longer constituted a danger.

In an executive order on Friday, the president extended for one year the so-called “national emergency” with respect to the nuclear-armed nation, re-authorizing economic restrictions against it.

While expected, the declaration comes just nine days after Trump tweeted: “There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea,” following his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore.

Everything right-wing media tried to blame for the Trump administration’s family separation policy

As President Donald Trump’s administration implemented a new “zero tolerance” prosecution policy at the border that led to unprecedented and systematic separation of immigrant families and locking kids in cages, right-wing media flailed around trying to blame the administration’s policy on anybody or anything except Trump.

The president’s media enablers blamed Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush, “the law on the book,” Democrats in Congress, the media, the families themselves, and even “the Illuminati of K Street” for the Trump administration’s policy

The Turnbull Government: Those that would destroy the ABC

But what they really think is different. I have already outlined what Fifield really thinks. They are in effect already underfunding the ABC to keep it quiet and compliant and eventually sell it off.

You cannot trust the conservatives when it comes to the public broadcasters. Remember Tony Abbott the day before the 2013 election

He said there would be:

“no cuts to education, no cuts to health, no change to pensions, no change to the GST and no cuts to the ABC or SBS.”

All turned out to be lies. And speaking of SBS, the Liberal Council also voted for an “efficiency” review of SBS. Be afraid.

All of this gives Labor wonderful ammunition and they will make political capital out of it. They had already committed to restoring the $84 million in Turnbull Government funding cuts.

How then can we defend the ABC? The time for being meek and mild is over. Let’s organise protests across the country. Perhaps ABC workers could walk off the job until funding is restored and a new direction for the national broadcaster that more adequately reflects Australian society and its left-wing views begins? Otherwise, the Turnbull Government will strangle the ABC by stealth.

In Quoting Bible on Tearing Children from Parents, Sessions Echoes Israeli Practices

“More than 40% of the minors arrested were taken from home in the middle of the night, after being woken up.In some cases, the arrest is carried out quietly: soldiers knock on the door, wait for it to be opened, ask a few questions, tell the parents to wake up their son, and allow him to get dressed.”

It continues, after noting the terror this procedure strikes in the hearts of these ordinary Palestinians,

“With rare exceptions, the soldiers handcuff the minors as soon as they arrest them, or immediately after leaving the home. The reports indicate that in about 80% of the cases, the soldiers also blindfold the minors. In this state, the minors are then transported . . . Many of the minors reported that during transit, soldiers swore at them,
threatened them and even beat them.”

The long siege of Julian Assange

GREAT IDEAS in publishing are rare, but in 2006 Julian Assange came up with one.

Assange reasoned that the key structure that generated bad governance was conspiracy. To fight the conspiracies behind corrupt governments, he advocated a strategy to expose the conspirators and the conspiracies through a systematic use of leaks.

His subversive proposal was to build a website for whistleblowers where they could upload their information in safety and from where it could be collectively analysed by citizen journalists. The name he gave his whistleblower-enabling website was WikiLeaks.

After Bragging About Vanquished North Korean Threat, Trump Declares Nation’s “Biggest Enemy” Is Journalism He Doesn’t Like

“Free Press America” is Trump’s “greatest enemy” except for Fox News of course also according to Donald Trump himself. Have you heard of “fake news”? It’s been his most useful idea to date. (ODT)

After triumphantly boasting in a tweet on Friday that North Korea is “no longer a nuclear threat” following just a few hours of vague discussions, an absolutely “bonkers” video presentation, and several photo ops with Kim Jong Un, President Donald Trump declared that the “biggest enemy” of the United States is now “fake news”—otherwise known as journalism Trump doesn’t like.”They are fighting hard to downplay the deal with North Korea,” Trump tweeted, apparently referring to journalists who have highlighted the fact that the “deal” reached with North Korea is thin on substance, non-binding, and just the first step in a long diplomatic process.”Our country’s biggest enemy is the Fake News so easily promulgated by fools!” Trump added.

OXYMORON = Israeli Empathy

Just outside the Palestinian town of Eizariya in the occupied West Bank, on the side of a busy highway, sits a set of small trash-strewn plots. Bent remnants of metal pipes protrude from piles of crumpled cans and broken bottles. Shredded plastic bags flap in the wind as cars rush by. Garbage trucks unload their toxic cargo at the Abu Dis dump just 500 meters away. The smell of burning rubbish makes the air sharp.

This area is known as Jahalin West, where the Israeli government plans to forcibly transfer the 181 residents of Khan al-Ahmar, a Palestinian Bedouin hamlet facing imminent demolition.

Trust Trump to snatch comedy from the jaws of victory

It’s a slightly mad thing to think, but as a local journalist said to me: “It takes a mad man to do what Trump has done.” This attempt to build a new, permanent relationship with North Korea, based largely on the word of a dictator, is an unorthodox gamble, but it might pay off. It exploits well the needs and vanities of its main players.

It’s important to remember that North Korea has only come to the table because it has decided it is ready and willing. Its nuclear programme has reached a point where it feels secure enough to play it as a bargaining chip, and so it was Kim Jong-un – desperate for investment in his isolated kingdom – who invited Mr Trump to meet, not the other way around. Mr Trump’s radical move was to accept.

ANU’s ‘Western Civilisation’ decision: A reactionary feast for the rabid right

How Remeniscent is this when Tony abbott tried a $4,000,000 bribe any Australian university to provide a department for his favorite Climate Change opinionator Dr Bjorn Lomborg. An academic whose qualifications were sufficiently borderline to question his ability to be a tutor let alone the head of a newly bought department whose ideas Abbott wanted taught as an absolute. Lomborg seems to have disappeared off the world map since Tony Abbott’s efforts failed to raise him and place him on his anti- climate change pedastal. The Ramsay Center seems exactly the same act of bribery yet again to push yet another relative concept to have Western Civilization position treated as an absolute on the history of civilizations at ANU. Despite the bribe they declined prefering their academic integrity instead. (ODT)

The decision has outraged the reactionary right. It is evidently the end of civilisation as former prime ministers John Howard and Tony Abbott know it. They have gone “full mental jacket”.

For example, the Institute of Public Affairs (IPA) pontificated that the ANU had sacrificed Western Civilisation on the “Altar of Leftist Warriors”. Crikey’s Emily Watkins has set out the details of the many explosions of confected outrage from the rabids. That was written before The Weekend Australian’s front-page article, a two-page “Culture War” special and an editorial, all angrily condemning the decision. Only moderate Liberal, Peter van Onselen, on another opinion page, backed the ANU’s sensible decision.

Calls grow in Germany to Expel US Ambassador who Aims to Empower Hard Right

Berlin (AFP) – A member of the German government on Tuesday accused the new US ambassador in Berlin of meddling in domestic politics and aggravating already tense ties, as left-wing parties called for the staunch ally of Donald Trump to be expelled.

Richard Grenell took up his Berlin posting on May 8 and immediately irked Germany when he tweeted the same day that German companies should stop doing business with Iran as Trump quit the nuclear deal with the Islamic Republic.

He stoked further outrage last weekend with reported comments to right-wing news website Breitbart of his ambition to “empower other conservatives throughout Europe, other leaders.”

Israeli army kills Palestinian nurse in Gaza border protest

Najar, a 21-year-old volunteer medic, was shot as she ran toward the fortified border fence, east of the south Gaza city of Khan Younis, in a bid to reach a casualty, a witness said.

Wearing a white uniform,” she raised her hands high in a clear way, but Israeli soldiers fired and she was hit in the chest,” the witness, who requested anonymity, said.

An Israeli military spokeswoman had no immediate comment on Najar’s killing. Israeli officers have previously said that army snipers target only people posing a threat, but that the bullets can sometimes run through them or ricochet, hitting bystanders.

Minister Mitch Fifield lodges sixth complaint about the ABC in five months

Fifield seems to have chosen to be Murdoch’s lackey in government. Does he have the balls to take his anti- ABC stance ,the most trusted media organization in the country, to the next election? Does he have the guts to put forward the policy to scrap it? I doubt he’d hold his seat when 80% of the country support the ABC. Whinging as did Abbott when he cried whose side are they on shows the government is clueless about what we like the ABC doing asking the hard questions of everyone when they are there to be asked. Why is Fifield not addressing the issues of greater importance such as the obsolete and legless NBN? He’s running away from it using political distraction as a cover.  (ODT)

Communications Minister Mitch Fifield has made another complaint to the ABC – the sixth in five months – this time about commentary on the controversial date of the “super Saturday” byelections.

Senator Fifield has taken issue with the characterisation of the decision to hold five byelections on July 28 – the weekend Labor had booked its national conference – as a deliberately political move.

“The Prime Minister did not decide the date for the byelections,” Senator Fifield told ABC boss Michelle Guthrie in a written complaint obtained by Fairfax Media.

How Israeli banks finance theft of Palestinian land | The Electronic Intifada

Under the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, “businesses are expected to undertake human rights due diligence to identify and mitigate contributions to human rights violations of not only their own activities but also activities to which they are directly linked by their business relationships,” Human Rights Watch notes.

“None of the seven Israeli banks contacted responded to questions regarding any steps they have taken to implement” the UN Guiding Principles, according to Human Rights Watch.

But there is no way to limit the harm that comes from doing any business related to Israel’s colonies.

“Settlements inherently contribute to serious violations of international human rights and humanitarian law,” Human Rights Watch states. “Companies, including banks, that conduct business in or with settlements cannot mitigate or avoid contributing to these abuses, because the activities they conduct take place on unlawfully seized land, under conditions of discrimination, and through a serious violation of Israel’s obligations as an occupying power.”

The group urges banks to completely “cease doing business in or with Israeli settlements” because “in Human Rights Watch’s view, these activities inherently contribute to serious abuses.”

This report builds on one Human Rights Watch published last September debunking claims by Israeli banks that Israeli law requires them to provide services that aid the theft and colonization of Palestinian land.

BERLIN—Leaping at the chance to never again deal with the U.S. after North Korea’s disparaging remarks towards the vice president, leaders from the other 193 nations of the world began insulting Mike Pence Thursday in hopes of avoiding future meetings with President Donald Trump. “Mike Pence is just a dumbfuck partisan hack who doesn’t have the faintest clue about international relations or running a country,” said German Chancellor Angela Merkel, joining nearly 200 other presidents and prime ministers who mercilessly degraded Pence as “cowardly,” “full of crap,” and “repulsive” in a concerted effort to stave off any more direct contact with Trump or have him ever visit their countries. “Mike Pence was a shit governor of a shit state, and he’s as incompetent as he is ugly. Just a pandering, feckless asshole with the personality and intelligence of roadkill. Meeting him in person was one of the worst encounters of our lives—he and his whole family can go fuck themselves.” World leaders finished their comments by adding that if there were any justice in the world, Mike Pence would rot away alone in the dank halls of a federal penitentiary.

Donald Trump cancels summit with North Korea’s Kim Jong-un

The letter was released publicly within hours of Western journalists confirming they had witnessed the demolition of North Korea’s remote nuclear test site at Punggye-Ri.

That act was supposed to signal North Korea’s willingness to negotiate with the US over denuclearisation at the June 12 meeting.

CNN’s Will Ripley, among the journalists to witness the demolition of the nuclear site, said there was “a real sense of shock among the people I was sitting with, the North Korean officials” when he
received the phone call and was told the summit was off. The reporters had to inform the North Korean officials of the news.
