PATRICK LAWRENCE: The Banality of Propaganda

The task before us is one of restoration. It is to take language back, to renew its life, to wrest it from the deadening influence of institutions, bureaucracies, and corporate media — these having deformed language into an instrument for the enforcement of conformity. This is why every shout and placard heard or seen in London or many other cities these days is important, an act of significance and worth.

Clear language is an instrument — unadorned, written and spoken plainly, colloquial in the best sense of this term but perfectly capable of subtlety and complexity. It is the language of history, not myth.

This language is spoken not in the cause of empire but always in the human cause. “Free Palestine,” “From the river to the sea”: These are two-word and six-word examples of the language I describe.

This is the language necessary to confront power rather than accommodate it. It is language that presumes the utility of intelligence and critical thought. It is meant for the posing of many worthy questions. It is unreservedly dedicated to enlarging what is sayable in hostile response to “the great unsayable,” as I call it.

Atrocities vs. Israeli and U.S. Propaganda – CounterPunch.org

Joe Biden

Biden doesn’t believe, Netanyahu Believes Germany believes in only Israel

So WTF has belief got to do with what’s being DONE?

So, who to believe? The people who have long been oppressed by the U.S. and Israel, or those two rogue nations that each have a long and ugly history of lying to cover their war crimes and crimes against humanity? The readers can make their own decision, but this writer will always side with the evidence, which does not support the U.S.-Israel narrative.

Anti-Voice Propaganda: A Response – » The Australian Independent Media Network

pseudo-arguments put forward in this remarkable piece of political propaganda are the best that those opposed to the Voice can muster at this point, the campaign is dead. Simple application of basic logic and critical thinking exposes the ‘case’ against the Voice as quite ineffectual. It is standard Conservative fare: fear the unknown (despite there being ample detail about the Voice). I do find it interesting that they tipped their hand so blatantly with the ‘this is permanent’ argument. They are clearly desperate, and that argument was not thought through. Their petulance thus exposed, let us hope the electorate sees through this nonsense and votes for True National Unity with a Voice.

Why propaganda works so well in Australia – Pearls and Irritations

The past five years of intensive anti-China propaganda, highly aligned as it is with government objectives, have been instrumental in propping up public support for AUKUS and the Australian government’s flawed foreign and defence policies. Why have Australians been so susceptible to the influence of that propaganda?

Propaganda, the drive to war, and the battle for the mind – Pearls and Irritations

A stylised crowd of people looks at the TV screen, a symbol of propaganda.

A battle of ideas is being fought in Australia. And the front line is the drive to war and the demonisation of China. There is a battle but it is a one-sided affair.

US Tells Another Bedtime Story To Scare Away Normal Relations With China and Cuba – scheerpost.com

On June 8, the US media added to its long storybook of tales to scare people away from normal relations with Cuba. The Wall Street Journal published an article on that day claiming that China has plans to set up a “spy base” in Cuba, to “eavesdrop” on the United States and “identify potential strike targets.” WSJ has already published two more pieces since rapidly ramping up its narrative against the Cuban state and fermenting more paranoia as the news spreads across mainstream news outlets in the United States.

How serious is the Australian propaganda infection? – Pearls and Irritations

Propaganda trolling and broadcast on screen.

Thinking in contradictory terms is the main symptom of a propaganda infection. We complain that China, our biggest trading partner, is damaging our trade with sanctions on a few items but we are preparing to fight them to completely destroy our trade with them. We accuse China of violating freedom of navigation when the navigation route they are protecting is our own trade passage to and from China.

Most propaganda looks nothing like this – Pearls and Irritations

Strips of newspaper with the words Propaganda typed on them. Black and white. Close up.

So that’s what we’re up against. There’s a failure to appreciate just how pervasive and powerful the empire’s propaganda machine is, even among those who are very critical of empire, because propaganda in our society is like water for fish — we’re swimming in it constantly, so we don’t see it. You have to step way, way back and begin examining our situation from its most basic foundations to get any perspective on how all-encompassing it really is.

Finding your way out of the propaganda matrix takes a lot of diligent work, tons of curiosity, the humility to admit you’ve been completely wrong about everything, and more than a little plain dumb luck. But if you keep hacking away at it eventually you get there, and then you can help others get there too. It’s a hard slog, but if our chains are psychological that means they’re ultimately only made of dream stuff. All that needs to happen is for enough of us to wake up.

Elon Musk’s Latest Twitter Tantrum Is an Attempt To Amplify Propaganda | The Smirking Chimp

Musk’s Role Model Murdoch gave rise to the birth of countless right-wing voices throughout America all with their hands out. But Musk is a billionaire and unlike the Koch, bros love to be out in the open like Trump.

Musk used jargon-laden tweets to hint at a more right-leaning and disinfo-laden site, he showed up in a box seat next to Fox News owner Rupert Murdoch at the Super Bowl. Murdoch, of course, has spent years using the trappings of cable news to create the illusion of credibility for right-wing propaganda. He did so by claiming right wing lies were necessary as “balance” to the mainstream media. Musk’s presence by his side was a clear signal that Musk has similar goals for using social media to whitewash repugnant lies. The good news is that his overall poor management of Twitter has caused a stampede of advertisers out the door. The company may not be around long enough to do the damage Musk is hoping for.

In response to recent reporting that former President Donald Trump was illegally in possession of classified material – including nuclear secrets – at his Mar-a-Lago resort, Fox News hosts and Trump himself lied that his predecessor, former President Barack Obama, had also kept millions of government documents in his possession. After Trump and his right-wing media allies promoted these lies, the National Archives and Records Administration released a statement refuting them.

You might remember Maria Butina as the Russian spy who was convicted in the United States and later deported back to Russia, her boyfriend pardoned by Trump. In 2021, she was elected to the State Duma as a member of United Russia. The BBC host here was gobsmacked by her replies, calling her answers “preposterous.”

The lesson here is straightforward: Everyone who wants their country to improve should feel free to engage in sincere, accurate criticism of their government’s actions. It is both inevitable and irrelevant that it will likely end up sounding similar to criticism of their country by foreign “enemy” governments. And those who claim the similarity discredits the internal critics should be ignored like the propagandists they are. To keep this in mind, you can memorize this article, or just keep a copy of this chart handy:

Palmer’s propaganda fodder for far-Right rebellion

Of concern here is the theme Palmer has advocated, saying that there have been few COVID-19 deaths and that the real threats are from the vaccinations themselves — identical to the views of The Australia Project, the same people who are seemingly advocating an overthrow of the government. One has to wonder if Clive’s war-chest has been spent on anything other than advertising.

CPAC: how Australia’s rightwing speaking circuit went from ‘PR stunt’ to cash cow | Australia news | The Guardian

Far-right agitator and former Breitbart writer Milo Yiannopoulos at Parliament House in 2017

The cash cow of the conservative circus make money at the Australian taxpayer’s expense. CPAC promoted by Sky After Dark for free  no tax all expenses on YOU!! (ODT)

There is no shortage of tourists keen to cash in on an apparent demand for their services in Australia

“I wouldn’t continue to seek opportunities in this space, and I wouldn’t have Penthouse continue to seek out opportunities in this space if it wasn’t profitable both in a monetary and a marketing sense,” he says

And the arrival of CPAC suggests conservative organisations around the globe agree.

“It’s really dragging the mainstream of conservatism to the fringes. There are figures now at CPAC who would have been considered beyond the pale of respectability a few years ago.”

“Members of the hard right in Australia follow American and British politics as much as they follow ours, they see Trump as this really important figure for the whole world because they believe he embodies the kind of global possibilities of the hard right,” he says. “We’re very much part of this global movement, or at least aspiring movement.”

John Pilger: War by media and the triumph of propaganda.

Are you a Nazi?

nazi

In February I published an article called But then it was too late which was an excerpt from the Milton Mayer book They Thought They Were Free.  It is a chilling account of how the Nazis were able to rise to power, how they gradually habituated the public into accepting their increasingly depraved agenda.

But that was a long time ago and it couldn’t happen here, right?

In the land of the brave and the home of the free, the American Nazi Party still exists as “a Political-Educational Association, dedicated to the 14 WORDS – We must secure the existence of our people and a future for White children.”

They have a party platform and website that outlines their goals, or should I say demands, exhorting patriotic WHITE Americans to rise up.

“Each of us must decide just how far we will let the situation in America deteriorate, before we decide to take action to correct it. If you have had enough, and are willing to join the ranks of your ancestors who forged this land from a wilderness teeming with savages, and to keep it from returning to that state, we urge you to become involved. For your children’s sake, if not for your own. For White WORKER Power!”

Randa Morris has designed a ten question quiz to help modern day conservatives determine just how much of the American Nazi Party platform they agree with.  Whilst written for an American audience, the questions apply equally well to an Australian context.

Take the ‘Are you a Nazi?’ quiz.

  1. Do you oppose immigration and believe that America is for “Americans only?
  2. Do you oppose feminism, and do you believe that motherhood should be the prime role of women, in order to “strengthen the family unit?”
  3. Do you support the establishment of a new system of education, which would oversee the “moral development” of children?
  4. Do you believe that the economy and the government should be debt-free?
  5. Do you believe that America should be “energy sufficient,” and that we should exploit natural resources, such as land and water, in order to achieve that goal? (Bonus question: Is it a good idea to put ‘fossil fuel-producing corporations,’ like fracking wells, oil rigs and garbage incinerators in economically depressed regions of the country, to stimulate economic growth and create jobs for minorities?)
  6. Do you support the right of citizens to keep and bear arms? (No, Nazi’s do not support taking guns away, contrary to right wing bullshit.)
  7. Do you want to do away with the separation of church and state?
  8. Do you want to see the US government get involved in the “spiritual upbringing” of children?
  9. Are you a true supporter of “traditional American values?” (The Nazi’s call it ‘traditional Aryan values,’ but we know what you mean.)
  10. Do you believe that minorities and immigrants are a threat to the traditional United States?

Bonus points if you:

  1. Oppose labor unions and want to see them outlawed.
  2. Agree that there is a “war on white people” and that ‘reverse-racism’ is a real problem in the United States.
  3. Believe that gays present a real threat to “traditional American values” and the “traditional American family.”
  4. Hate “Communists” and are willing to apply that label to everyone you disagree with politically.

Remind you of anyone?

Randa explains her purpose is not to condemn or to convict, but to expose how the Nazi agenda has gone mainstream and to (hopefully) help some of the people who have bought into this agenda, to realize what they’ve been sold.

The use of religion by the right wing in the US today serves a specific purpose. Followers of the right wing confuse their religious beliefs with their political ideas, and become unable to separate the two. In the same way it did in Nazi Germany, the tactic is used to create religiously-fervent extremists, people who are unable to separate their belief in God from their devotion to a political party or regime.

What Hitler understood is that a man can be persuaded to do anything, as long as he believes that what he is doing is “God’s will.”

Regardless of what perspective you take on history, most people understand that Nazi’s were and are evil. Most people are aware that, in the past, they used mass manipulation to promote their agenda and to get the people to go along with it.

If the same tactics were being used in Australia today, would people be able to see what was happening? Could people go from being kind-hearted, God-fearing citizens to Nazi’s without realizing that their beliefs were being subtly manipulated through a mixing of religion and nationalism?

“the political opinion of the masses represents nothing but the final result of an incredibly tenacious and thorough manipulation of their mind and soul.” -Adolf Hitler (Mein Kampf)

Why conservatives prefer propaganda to reality. Murdochs Media is driving polorization inthis country.

Why conservatives prefer propaganda to reality

A new Pew study on America’s media consumption offers a window into the right’s collective mindset

Pew Research set out to find what’s behind what it considers the increasing political polarization of the United States; why the country is moving away from political moderation and becoming more and more divided between liberals and conservatives. Its first report on the phenomenon, which examines where people are hearing news and opinion in both regular and social media, shows that this is happening for very different reasons among people moving to the right than for people moving to the left.

Or that’s the charitable way to put it. The less charitable way is to say Pew discovered that conservatives are consuming a right-wing media full of lies and misinformation, whereas liberals are more interested in media that puts facts before ideology. It’s very much not a “both sides do it” situation. Conservatives are becoming more conservative because of propaganda, whereas liberals are becoming more liberal while staying very much checked into reality.

That this polarization is going on isn’t a myth. Previous Pew research shows the percentage of Americans who are “mostly” or “consistently” conservative has grown from 18% in 2004 to 27% in 2014. During that same period, the percentage of Americans who are “mostly” or “consistently” liberal stayed a little more consistent, growing from 33% to 34% in 10 years. (These statistics don’t measure what you call yourself, but what you rate as on a scale of beliefs about various issues.) While liberals became more liberal, conservatives both became more numerous and more rigidly conservative over time. What gives?

Enter right-wing media, which has a nifty trick of convincing audiences it’s the other guys who are the liars, all while actually being much less trustworthy in reality. From conservative screaming about the “media elite” to Fox News’s old slogan “Fair and Balanced,” conservative media is rife with the message that everyone is out to get you, conservative viewer, and only in the warm blanket of right-wing propaganda will you be safe.

The message, the Pew research suggests, has really taken hold. Pew researchers gave respondents a list of 36 popular media sources and asked how much they trusted each one. Some were liberal, like The Daily Show or ThinkProgress. Some were conservative, like Rush Limbaugh or Fox News. Most of them are fairly straightforward news organizations with no overt political agenda, like NPR, various network news, CNN, and the New York Times.

The findings were astounding. Out of the 36 news sources, consistent liberals trusted 28, a mix of liberal and mainstream news sources. Mostly, liberal respondents generally agreed, holding out a little more skepticism for overtly ideological sources like Daily Kos or ThinkProgress, but not actually distrustingthem, either. The only news sources liberals didn’t trust, generally, are overtly right-wing ones, such as Fox News, the Blaze, Breitbart, or Rush Limbaugh’s show.

Conservatives, on the other hand, saw betrayers and liars around every corner. Consistent conservatives distrusted a whopping 24 out of 36 outlets and mostly conservative respondents distrusted 15 and were skeptical of quite a few more. The hostility wasn’t just to well-known liberal sources like MSNBC. Strong conservatives hated all the network news, CNN, NPR, and the major national outlets, except the Wall Street Journal.  Respondents who are mostly conservative fared better, but were still hostile to the New York Times and the Washington Post, as well as skeptical of mainstream organizations like CBS and NBC News.

The fact that conservatives are this paranoid should be alarming enough, but it becomes even more frightening when you consider who conservatives do trust in the media. Consistent conservatives only trusted 8 media sources–compared to the 28 liberals trusted–and of the eight, only one has anything approaching respectable reporting or reliable information. And that one, the Wall Street Journal, has good straight reporting but has an op-ed page that is a train wreck of right-wing distortions and misinformation. Most conservative people were a little more open-minded, trusting USA Today and ABC News, but still were supportive of openly distorting sources like Fox News or the Drudge Report.

The trust conservatives put in conservative media is utterly misplaced. For instance, both consistent and mostly conservative people love Glenn Beck, though he’s a well-known purveyor of outrageous conspiracy theories that percolate up to him from fringe characters. Breitbart and Sean Hannity also rated high, despite their shared history of championing right-wing fringe characters like Cliven Bundy.

But what is really frightening is the reach of Fox News. Fox News rated as the only real news source for consistent conservatives, with 47% of them citing it as their main source of news. Nothing even came close to touching it, as the second most common answer, “local radio” was cited by only 11% of consistent conservatives. Eighty-eight percent of consistent conservatives trusted Fox News. Mostly conservative and even “mixed” people also liked Fox News.

The problem with this is watching Fox News actually makes you less informed than if you don’t watch any news at all. In a 2012 study, Fox News viewers rated the absolute lowest in ability to correctly answer questions on a quiz about recent news events. People who didn’t take in any news programs at all did better on the quizzes. NPR listeners rated the best. Consistent liberals in the Pew research were big fans of NPR, by the way. It was the second most common outlet cited as a favorite by consistent liberals, topped only by CNN.

Fox News is one of the main factors, possibly the main factor, driving political polarization in this country. Huge chunks of this country listen mostly or solely to a relentless stream of misinformation coming from Fox News, coupled with warnings, implied or even baldly stated, to avoid listening to other, more factually accurate news sources. Unsurprisingly, then, more people are becoming conservatives and people who were already conservative are becoming more hardline about it. If you have any Fox viewers in your family, you probably already suspected this, but now Pew has given us the cold, hard facts to confirm your suspicions.

The Right’s right to be wrong

Has anyone else noticed the ever increasing drift from reality those famous bed-partners – the Coalition and the Murdoch media – have settled comfortably into? They also have some absurd idea that this new, fabulous paradise is all that exists.

Joe Hockey for example. He repeatedly bellowed that the age of entitlement was over, and followed up with a budget that showed us that the age of entitlement is of course over, except for those who are entitled to it.

Miranda Devine lives there too. ‘The Left’s race to call us all bigots

No Bigots here

or

Islamophobia

Maybe Ms Devine hasn’t been reading the very paper she writes for, let’s take a random look at what her newspaper – and other media outlets – have been saying:

# Young filmmaker Kamal Saleh is optimistic for the future of Australia after his social experiment on Islamophobia but says discrimination remains an issue in the community.

# Five threatening letters delivered to Muslim businesses and groups in Lakemba are being investigated by police, with more incidents believed to be going unreported. Campsie crime manager detective Inspector Paul Albury said the material was offensive and would be to anybody in the community. “It’s degrading, disgusting and derogatory to people and their religion,” he said.

# Last week, after Bernardi’s comments, I was interviewed by the ABC for an explanatory article on the burqa, the niqab, and my choice of garment, the hijab, which covers only a woman’s hair, neck and shoulders. Bizarrely, when posted by the ABC on Facebook, the article received more comments than the ABC’s reports on the anti-terror raids themselves. The comments section is sobering reading for anyone with any doubts about the perniciousness of Islamophobia in Australia.

# Australia has emerged as a fertile environment for Islamophobia. Stereotypical representations of Muslims in the early years of the “War on Terror” – which linked terrorism, violence and Islam – gained wide currency by the mid-2000s. Sections of the news media, politicians and social media have re-activated these stereotypes. Muslim Australians are made to feel they are targets – for everything from the everyday racism encountered in schools and on the streets, to draconian counter-terrorism legislation that restricts civil liberties, to war and the preparations for war.

# In the contemporary socio-political context of Australia, Islamophobia continues to be haunted by the cycle of moral panics around the Muslim “Other.”

# Tony Abbott has been urged to speak out more strongly against Islamophobia in Australia following reports of mosques being defaced, women verbally abused on the street and death threats issued to Muslim figures. Community leaders have said they are deeply worried that Australia’s mission against Islamic State (Isis) and recent anti-terrorism raids are fuelling attacks against Muslims in Australia.

# The waves of abuse on social media has also highlighted how open bigotry has become, as if the disgust around the Islamic State has given a free pass to intolerance.

# Many Muslim women, say Ms Kay and other community members, are fearful of going out and many won’t venture far beyond their homes. Ahmed Kilani, editor of website muslimvillage.com, says some are now questioning whether Australia is still a safe and tolerant society. “My own mother rang me yesterday,” Mr Kilani told SBS, “with concern about what’s going, she said, ‘I don’t feel safe and secure.’ She made the comment to me that despite living here for 40 years which is a lot longer than she lived in Egypt. She said perhaps I need to consider moving back there and questioned whether I should go and get myself a dual citizenship in case things get really bad.” Race Discrimination Commissioner Tim Soutphommasane has called for calm, saying, “Muslim Australians are entitled to a fair go and to be treated with respect and there is simply no place for this kind of bigotry and this kind of criminal behaviour.”

The Daily Telegraph – the very paper Ms Devine works for – even published an article titled ‘Incidents of Islamophobia‘.

I’m baffled that Ms Devine finds it necessary not only to blame the Left for Islamophobia in this country – then announces that it doesn’t exist here anyway – yet works in an industry (and a newspaper) that keeps telling us how rampant it is.

If I may borrow an old adage: who makes this shit up?

The drift from reality is almost complete. She is quickly catching up to Joe Hockey

Tony Abbott visits PNG en route to Indonesia for his UNINVITED inauguration of new president Joko Widodo. So this is for our benefit and Murdoch Commentary

P

Prime Minister Tony Abbott boards an RAAF jet in Sydney before departing for Indonesia.

Pursed lips I’m off really off

Unexpected visit to Papua New Guinea.

The ABC understands Mr Abbott met PNG prime minister Peter O’Neill today and discussed the threat of the Ebola virus as well as resettling asylum seekers.

Mr Abbott said in a video statement that Mr Widodo’s inauguration was an important event for Australia as “Indonesia is a hugely important neighbour”. I’m gate crashing and  shirt-fronting

” Shit It has the world’s largest Muslim population, it is the world’s third largest democracy and, along with India, it’s the emerging democratic superpower of Asia,” he said. ” I can talk coal”  but Shhhhhhhh!!!!

“Almost one million Australians visit Indonesia, including Bali, every year and over 17,000 Indonesian students study here in Australia each year.” Business first we guess because Andrew Bolt Murdoch news and 2GB assure us he hates Muslims apart from Scott Morrison’s suggestion ” they will improve our poll ratings”.

Mr Abbott said “uninvited he is looking to strengthen Australia’s social and economic ties with the nation.”

“Indonesia will be the fourth biggest economy in the world by mid-century. This is why our foreign policy needs a Jakarta focus rather than a Geneva one.”

Oh I forgot I said that ages ago but I have been busy polling in Aus you know using every opportunity to hide the budget.

NEWLY published propaganda material from Islamic State celebrates “the revival of slavery” and defends capturing women.

The disturbing apocalyptic cover of an earlier issue of Dabiq.

In an article entitled “the revival of slavery”, published on behalf of “an official Islamic State spokesman”, the group appears to defend its enslavement of women.

It suggests enslaving families and “taking their women” is firmly established in the Koran, and suggestion otherwise would be anti-Islam and “mocking” towards the prophet.

The article threatens enemies that followers of IS will “enslave your women, by the permission of Allah, the Exalted”, and details conquests in which “women and children were divided according to the Shari’ah among the fighters of the Islamic State”.

It goes on to highlight the disadvantages of abandoning slavery.

“The desertion of slavery have let to an increase in fahishah (adultery, fornication, etc.),” it says.

“This again is from the consequences of abandoning jihad.”

The disturbing messaging comes as humanitarian organisation Human Rights Watch has published a shocking report on Islamic State’s treatment of women and girls.

“The Islamic State’s litany of horrific crimes against the Yezidis in Iraq only keeps growing,” said Fred Abrahams, special adviser at Human Rights Watch.

“At this point of the crusade against the Islamic State, it is very important that attacks take place in every country that has entered into the alliance against the Islamic State, especially the US, UK, France, Australia and Germany,” it states.

“The citizens of crusader nations should be targeted wherever they can be found.”

How can every single one of our journalists have got it so terribly wrong? The Melbourne’s Age was the only paper in the country to back Labor.

Thanks for nothing. To the wordsmiths that just take the money.

I remember when the United States Congress gave our Prime Minister a standing ovation.

I remember when men and women around the world were touched by her passion in championing the rights of women.

I remember when our Treasurer was hailed as the best in the world for saving our country from the collapse felt around the globe.

I remember when the world was praising our leadership in action on climate change by introducing carbon pricing.

I remember when we reached agreement with the states to implement education funding reform.

I remember when we looked forward to every home being connected to world class NBN.

It wasn’t that long ago.

So how did we end up in our current position, represented by fools and vilified globally?

The people who are paid to inform us, whose job it is to hold politicians to account, failed us, that’s how.

On the eve of the election, every major newspaper in the country, with the exception of Melbourne’s Age, endorsed Tony Abbott to be Australia’s 28th prime minister.

Queensland’s Courier Mail ran a front page picture of a clown’s hat, emblazoned with the ALP logo, toppled in the centre of a circus ring under a headline ”The circus is over.”

”We believe Tony Abbott stands ready to seize the day,” read Melbourne’s Herald Sun editorial, beside a front page headline ”Tony’s Time”.

The Adelaide Advertiser told Australians that ”tomorrow [they] finally have an opportunity to set our nation on a new path”.

The Canberra Times also came out in favour of the Coalition telling us it was “Abbott’s time”.

On the first day of the election campaign the Daily Telegraph ran a front page photograph of a distressed-looking Kevin Rudd accompanied by the headline: ”Finally, you now have the chance to . . . Kick this mob out.”

And the Sunday Telegraph published a front page picture of a statesman-like Tony Abbott standing in front of a billowing national flag, with the headline: ”Australia needs Tony.”

The Sydney Morning Herald said ”Abbott does not so much deserve the chance to do what Labor could not do in the past six years. But the party he leads is untainted by scandal and infighting, and therefore has the best chance to unite a tired and despondent electorate.”

The AFR judged that ”Australia’s prosperity would be better served by a Coalition government”.

The Australian pushed for the Coalition to be given a majority government and for Mr Abbott to seek a ”mandate for reform”.

The newspaper praised the Opposition Leader, saying: ”Rarely in the modern era has there been a more grounded prime ministerial candidate than this volunteer firefighter, surf lifesaver, endurance athlete and charity cyclist.”

The Northern Territory News compared Labor’s reign to natural disasters afflicting the NT.

”Territorians cope with a lot compared to the rest of Australia. Searing heat, torrential downpours, cyclones and the tyranny of distance,” the NT News editorial read.

”One thing we cannot, and should not, have to cope with is when a government . . . goes troppo. The Labor Federal Government has gone troppo. And that’s being kind. It has lost the ability – and the right – to lead.”

But ”fortunately”, the newspaper concluded, “there is a candidate to bring the country to its senses”.

Melbourne’s Age was the only paper in the country to back Labor.

The Age judged that Labor’s policies – especially the national broadband network, better schools plan and commitment to a price of carbon – meant the government deserved to be returned, but they had already cruelled any chance of that when, in June their headline read “For the sake of the nation, Ms Gillard should stand aside.”

How can every single one of our journalists have got it so terribly wrong? These people are trained and paid to do a job.  They have access to the inner workings of Parliament and they are fed briefs, press releases and leaks.  Perhaps, rather than slavishly believing and printing what they are told, they would do better to stay in their jammies and do a little research for themselves.

We are owed an apology.

Kurdish super entrepreneur gives $2 million to Syria and Iraq refugees

Banner Icon Refugees The founder of US yogurt brand Chobani said Thursday he has given $2 million for Iraqi and Syrian refugees massed along Turkey’s borders.

The money from Chobani creator Hamdi Ulukaya will go to items that are urgently needed as winter approaches, such as tents, blankets and food, a statement said.

Ulukaya, a Turkish Kurd, arrived in America in 1994 to study English and went on to found a yogurt-making empire.

“I am close to what is happening, it is personal for me,” Ulukaya told AFP.

“I can’t sit and watch these kids and women walking through mountains to flee wars.”

Thousands of refugees fleeing violence in Syria and Iraq are seeking shelter on the Turkish border.

Ulukaya purchased a small feta-cheese factory in 2002 and the business quickly grew. In 2005, he bought a dairy food plant that was owned by food giant Kraft.

He went on to create and market Chobani, a protein-rich Greek-style yogurt. According to the Chobani website, sales passed $1 billion last year.

The donation will be given to the International Rescue Committee and the United Nations’ refugee agency.

“We are going to make sure (every) penny reaches the people,” Ulukaya said.

Plastic sword is the least of ASIO’s bungles in the ‘terror raid.’ Lack of intelligence is a greater issue coupled by a lack of public apology. leaving us to believe the raid was a successfull excercise. The silence is propaganda.

ASIO has more money and more opportunity to showcase their incompetence

ASIO’s showcase raid was on the Dirani family who  are Afghan-born Shiite Muslims. Why, then, was Mustafa Dirani being raided in connection with the IS, a Sunni group notorious for massacring as apostates any Shias who fall into its clutches?

How can we have an intelligence agency that hasn’t even a clue about the basics of what it’s doing. We accept the divisions between the followers of Jesus as doctrinal differences that need to be taken seriously. But  Muslims remain tarred with one brush and then differentiated according to temperament:  whether they’re wild or tame.

The NSW Police Commissioner said he was perplexed and any wonder why  his men had just raided Dirani and his friends on the basis that they supported a group that wanted to kill them.

Did ASIO, an organisation with an annual budget of nearly half a billion dollars, really think that Shiites would belong to an organisation dedicated to massacring Shiites? Or were they simply happy to let the Diranis be swept up in the hysteria that, resulted in extraordinary new powers for ASIO?

It’s hard to know which option is more disturbing.

The ‘humanitarian’ war furphy

This new rush to war not an intervention designed to meet humanitarian goals and objectives, writes Dr Adam Hughes Henry, but simply another bloody bombing campaign to protect strategic Western interests.

Yet the actions of IS, in terms of our contemporary world, are very far from unique and as grotesque as their crimes are, cannot possibly be considered the worst of the worst. There are examples of barbaric behaviour which continue to be exhibited by U.S.-UK allies all over the world.

Bombing from the sky is not a very useful humanitarian response. Current actions do not appear to have any such UN sanctioned legitimacy. Furthermore, there are no foreign troops on the ground to specifically defend these threatened ethnic populations, set up safe zones or sanctuaries and there is also absolutely no talk from nations like Australia of taking in any of the threatened groups as refugees as a matter of priority. As in Kosovo in 1999, the way to save civilians from the stated threat of ethnic cleansing is apparently to bomb the place. The bombing did not decrease atrocities, they actually helped to create and indeed initiate a new cycle of Serbian atrocities in reprisal to a relentless U.S. led NATO bombing.

In Syria, the so called humanitarian impulse centred on the Assad regime for strategic and political reasons, while the well-being civilian population of Syria was used to promote it one way or the other. anti-Assad regime forces were provided assistance and every encouragement by the U.S. and the UK; among these anti-Assad forces were supporters of groups such as al Qaeda and those that now pledge fanatical allegiance to IS.

The question must be asked: how can the new mission to Iraq, particularly one spearheaded by the U.S. and backed by regimes like Saudi Arabia (who routinely funds Jihadist terrorist groups) be based on any notion of universal humanitarian values?

The human rights abuses and atrocities of Western allies over the past 50 years have washed the ground with the blood of their faceless victims over and over again. Islamic State do not have anything approaching a unique monopoly over human rights abuses, terror or fanaticism — they are certainly not an unprecedented human evil.

This new rush to war is not an intervention designed to fulfil any specified humanitarian objectives and outcomes. Where are the safe zones, where is UNHCR, where are the troops and diplomacy designed to defend, protect and negotiate for the safety of civilians?

Such a mission would surely be very different to what we are seeing now.

The primary U.S. led mission in Iraq appears only to be a major bombing campaign against IS in support of strategic interests, with no clear statement of its expected timeframe or even a secondary option.

If war is really only the process of translating diplomacy into killing and death and Afghanistan, Libya and Syria are any indicators of what we are about to see unfold as we folly back to Iraq without as much as a second thought — the very worst is still to come.

Unholy colusion fear for profit and polls. Business and Government the unholy link. Keep the mothers terrified

Depleted or derelict?

What sentient members of the Fourth Estate could ever set foot, for example, inside the offices of the Courier Mail? This is, let’s not forget, Brisbane’s only morning newspaper, a monopoly provider, and, by dint of journalistic volume, the most significant newsroom in Queensland.

This is the newspaper that in recent times advised its readers of an “AUSSIE FATWA” just days after it reported on the terror raids that swept through the suburbs of Sydney and Brisbane on September 18.

“Terror Australis: Cops foil horror attacks,” said the Courier Mail, blending the journalist’s fatal instinct for a pun with the paper’s absolute commitment to distortion, amplification and the propagation of fear to sell papers: for commercial gain.

It would only be days before a man was shot dead in Melbourne after the brutal, angry stabbing of two police officers. Did the Courier Mail report the simple and sufficiently horrifying facts? Well no, it reported the most sensational peak in the sea of supposition surrounding them: “Gunned down after PM terror threat: POLICE KILL ABBOTT JIHADI.”

There was of course no plot against the Prime Minister, unless what is described here by the Courier Mail constitutes an elaborate conspiracy:

Slain teenage extremist Numan Haider googled Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s movements in the days before being shot dead during a knife attack on counter terrorism agents.

The Courier Mail is of course just one among many. This is the house style of the major market tabloids that are the dominant organs of news in all our capital cities. They cry wolf, they cry terror, they fan the flames of disquiet and distrust.

Because fear sells.

Then there are the Fairfax papers, either so depleted or abjectly derelict they managed to splash the face of an utterly innocent man across the country after the Haider killing, with the indelible label “teenage terrorist”.

The Daily Telegraph sends a columnist to write a slovenly and misanthropic caricature of Lakemba, or as the Tele put it, “Sydney’s Muslim Land” as evidence of the threat that walks among us.

The Herald Sun publishes a full-page column headed “Islam’s violent tendencies”, illustrated with a half-page photo of a gesticulating Adolf Hitler.

And then we discover yesterday that the sword carried so ominously from the police raids of mid September, the one featured in page after page of reporting of raids that had apparently prevented “demonstration killings” and was thus by implication a weapon that might be used to sever innocent necks from heads, turns out to be a piece of plastic souvenir shop junk.

In this moment of high anxiety, the players in our commercial media have seen opportunity in a population made fearful and anxious for information.

Who threatens us? Where are they?

To which the answers seem universally to be “them” and “everywhere”.

Our politicians are not much different, but in the best of all possible worlds it would be our journalists who hold them to account.

And the consequence of this self-serving collusion in the fostering of paranoia?

This summary from the #WISH (Women In Solidarity with Hijabis) campaign is self-reported, and thus tricky to verify. But even if half right, it’s telling.

  • A woman in a hijab is physically attacked and her car subsequently vandalised with profanities spray-painted across it (Western Sydney)
  • A mother and her baby are verbally abused and spat on, and the pram is kicked (Sydney)
  • A woman in hijab has a cup of coffee hurled through the window of her car (Brisbane)
  • A mother and her baby are approached by three men, has her hijab ripped off, is spat on and pushed to the floor (Brisbane)
  • A woman is approached by a man and told to take her hijab off so he can burn it (Brisbane)
  • A woman in a hijab is approached by men in a shopping centre who try to rip her hijab from her head (Perth)
  • A mother and her child are verbally abused and the woman is told to take her child away from the other children at a playground (Melbourne)
  • A woman is verbally abused by three men who threaten to burn her hijab as she walks past a pub
  • A woman is verbally abused by man who threatens to burn her house down (Queensland)
  • A woman sitting on a bus with her son is filmed by a man who verbally abused her and said that he would use the video footage as means to identify her
  • A heavily pregnant woman is verbally abused and intimated (Sydney)
  • A mother and daughter are verbally assaulted and a passer-by who intervened is physically assaulted (Newcastle)
  • A young woman takes off her hijab out of fear for her safety (Canberra)

There is an issue here in the treatment of a serious social issue and one highly sensitive to the sort of reckless, and inflammatory reporting that has become typical – almost universal – in the Australian media mainstream.

But beyond that point, there is a lack of restraint, a grasping of commercial opportunity at whatever the cost and a lack of regard even for the fundamental truth, that is even more worrying.

In these end times for corporate journalism, in these desperate days when any sale is worth the compromise of basic standards of integrity and social tact, we might we wonder whether we’d be better off without a media apparatus that can sink so low.

Son Of A Preacher Man – Just who are Abbott’s “preachers of hate”?

I hope Tony Abbott will forgive me if I’m a little sceptical of his “preachers of hate” red card system legislation he wants to push through the parliament.

Maybe it’s just me, but I’m a bit cautious when the first time he really seeks to go into the plan is on the Alan Jones programme. Jones we may remember is the man who has repeatedly faced court over claims he incited the Cronulla race riots with his own on air hate speech and who had the class to use Julia Gillard’s recently deceased father to launch a vicious attack on her.

I’m also sceptical when the government pushing this “preachers of hate” legislation is the same government that only recently backed down on its election promise on changing the Racial Discrimination Act to allow people to preach hate based on race.

Amongst those preachers of hate Abbott sought to give a green light to rather than a red card were Alan Jones and Andrew Bolt. How handy then to be discussing preachers of hate on the Alan Jones programme, after all I guess he’s an expert.

In Australia the last time I remember there being this much fuss over “preachers of hate” speaking in Australia was when Geert Wilders came to our country despite calls to have his visa application denied. Wilders has many charismatic followers, amongst them are Anders Behring Breivik who massacred 77 people in Norway in 2011, Andrew Bolt, and of course Cory Bernardi.

When this particular “preacher of hate” came to Australia it was Tony Abbott’s former Parliamentary Secretary Cory Bernardi that gave him not the red card, but the red carpet treatment, acting as his guide.

Geert Wilders - Europes pin-up boy for racial hatred

Still, “preachers of hate” of hate is a pretty loose term, ones view of it would depend on your views on preachers and on hate.

In the US there is Federal legislation to protect its citizens from hate crime. A hate crime is deemed a crime against someone who is based in the victims race, religion. ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability.

Tony Abbott seems to view hate a little differently, saying on radio;

“Under the law that we are bringing through the Parliament hopefully before the end of the year, it will be an offence to promote terrorism – not just to engage in terrorism – but to promote terrorism.”

Whilst I agree with this, I don’t think it goes anywhere close to far enough. In fact it would seem to the casual observer that Abbott believes  a “preacher of hate” is someone who promotes terrorism, not someone who is on a soapbox making speeches designed to promote hatred, discrimination, and ignorance.

I would suggest that this is a very narrow view indeed.

Preacher of hate Alan Jones used the Abbott interview to preach some hatred about an Islamic organisation in Australia he would like to see banned.

The group is called  Hizb ut-Tahrir and they are banned in some parts of the world. I don’t claim to know enough about this group to give my views on them being “preachers of hate” so I won’t, but banning them would seem futile to me.

Banning hasn’t exactly worked a treat for bikie gangs, why would this be any different? In fact it seems to only make them harder to monitor.

Banning an organisation won’t suddenly change its members beliefs, I’d argue that it may even antagonise the membership.

It is rather ironic that the same people who were arguing for greater freedom of speech when it came to changing the Racial Discrimination Act are the same people wanting less freedom of speech for those whose views they disagree with.

I am in 100% agreement however that freedom of speech should not be a get out of jail free card for those who incite violence, whether that be done directly or indirectly. However this needs to be a two-way street.

The handiwork of Alan Jones?

Those who claim to be Islamic while promoting violence against civilians and other terror related activities should be charged and jailed. By the same token those who promote views that lead to hatred and discrimination against Muslims and those of Middle Eastern background should also be charged and jailed.

If it was a criminal offence to preach hate in Australia maybe we would see less comments from those who seek to promote class warfare by branding people like the disabled, the pensioners, the single parents, and the unemployed as bludgers and claim they are draining our society while others do the heavy lifting.

Maybe also we would see less speeches made that brand homosexuals as perverts and people with no morals, by those who claim some sort of moral superiority such as we often see through church groups and Liberal Party Senators.

Maybe it would stop those who are trying to ensure that we view every woman wearing a head covering as some sort of threat with their incorrect and discriminatory calls to “ban the burqa”.

Maybe it would mean groups like the World Congress Of Families coming out here to spew forth their preaching that single mothers and homosexuals are damaging societies moral fabric would have to tone down their rhetoric or have their visa application denied. Given their Australian Ambassador is Kevin Andrews Minister for Social Services I’m sure the government wouldn’t agree on them being “preachers of hate”. Certainly not Kevin Andrews or Eric Abetz…

There is no doubt that hate speech is a current and relevant topic to be discussing and something needs to be legislated and made into law.

However I’m not sure that it’s a decision that should be made by this government alone and I’m also not sure that it should be discussed by the Prime Minister on the radio programme of someone who has already been found to have intentionally incited hatred.

This should be something that is overseen by a completely independent panel and has representatives from all cultures, religions and minority groups taking part.

This is far too important an issue to let it be overrun by right-wing agendas.

We need only look at the budget to see what a disaster that turns out being.

A FORMER IS member has opened up on what life is really like inside the brutal Khansa’a Brigade — an all female unit that patrols the streets of Raqqa, Syria.

The 25-year-old former teacher, known only as Khadija, told CNN of her life inside the group of up to 30 women charged with ensuring people adhere to strict dress codes that demand women have their faces covered.

“At the start I was happy I was carrying a gun,” she said.

“It was something new. I had authority. I didn’t think I was frightening people. But then I started asking myself ‘where am I? Where am I going? I could feel the ties dragging me some place ugly.”

Watch the interview below:

During the interview Khadija describes how she grew up in Syria and became involved as an activist against the al-Assad regime — a time she describes as “great” before everything turned to chaos.

A man she met online lured her into joining Daesh with promises that it wasn’t a terrorist organisation and they could get married.

“He would say, ‘We are going to properly implement Islam. Right now we are in a state of war, a phase where we need to control the country, so we have to be harsh,’” CNN reports.

She convinced her family to move to Raqqa where a cousin who was also married to an IS fighter introduced her to the Khansa’a Brigade. She was paid a salary and learned how to fire a gun.

Women who broke the rules in the city were lashed by Umm Hanza — a terrifying leader describes as “not a normal female”.

“She’s huge, she has an AK, a pistol, a whip, a dagger and she wears the niqab,” she said.

MORE: The unlikely source of ISIS recruits

Khadija is not the first young woman to be seduced by Daesh. In November last year Scottish teenager Aqsa Mahmood disappeared and is thought to be in Syria tweeting under the name Umm Layth.

Authorities in France and the US have also stopped young women citizens at the airport en route to joining Daesh in the Middle East. Interpol is still searching for Austrian teenagers Sabina Selimovic, 15, and Samra Kesinovic, 16, who disappeared from their homes in suburban Vienna and are thought to be with Daesh in Syria.

While other women continue to join the regime, extreme brutality ultimately forced Khadija to leave the group.

In recent weeks, detailed UN reporting based on eyewitness accounts from inside the region have documented a litany of atrocities committed by IS militants in Syria and Iraq, including public executions, rape, abductions and lashings.

She said a particularly violent crucifixion of a 16-year-old and news that a Saudi husband had been found of her convinced her she needed to get out.

“At the start, I was happy with my job. I felt that I had authority in the streets. But then I started to get scared, scared of my situation. I even started to be afraid of myself,” she said.

“I said ‘enough’ I decided no, I have to leave”.

She slipped over the border to Turkey just days before air strikes began but chose to spoke out so others can know the truth.

“I don’t want anyone else to be duped by them. Too many girls think they are the right Islam.”

Senate Inquiry into Queensland Gov’t reveals Courier-Mail’s corruption. Andrew Bolt was a no fact contributor “grubby.grubby, grubby”

Murdoch’s Brisbane masthead The Courier Mail has clearly displayed bias and inconsistency in its hysterical coverage of the Senate Inquiry into the Newman Government, writes Alex McKean and Stephen Keim SC.

THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF A SENATE INQUIRY into certain aspects of the Newman Government in Queensland has been greeted with howls of derision from Brisbane’s daily print newspaper, the Courier-Mail.

There was little evidence of balance in the coverage of the issue on 2 October 2014, when the paper contained a two-page spread condemning the Inquiry (nor again in today’s issue).

Liberal Senator Eric Abetz was reported as sounding the dire warning that the Inquiry, an instrument of Clive Palmer’s retribution, would cost Queensland 70,000 jobs.

Dennis Atkins said that the Inquiry would render Parliament a crime scene.

Another story, authored by Steven Scott, Sarah Vogler and Renee Viellaris, stated that the ‘taxpayer-funded’ Inquiry would double as a ‘PUP pre-election spruik’.

Yet another article, by Greg Stoltz, drew a connection between the Inquiry and outlaw bikies, who were said to be thanking Clive Palmer for taking up their fight against the Newman Government. Mr Stoltz said that both Clive Palmer and Senator Glenn Lazarus had emerged as ‘heroes of the violent motorcycle gangs that police have spent years battling to bring under control’.

The big guns have been brought to bear, with Andrew Bolt contributing a lengthy piece in which he described the Inquiry as a ‘witch-hunt’. Bolt said the Inquiry was a ‘posse’ which had been created to ‘dig for dirt’ on the Newman Government.

Readers were exhorted to ‘be in no doubt that this is personal’ and were directed to ‘look at the grubbiness’. Bolt derided the Labor Party for ‘sinking to Palmer’s level’ by backing the Inquiry before signing off with the phrase: ‘grubby, grubby, grubby’.

The editorial ran many of the same lines, accusing the Palmer United Party of cynically playing Labor and the Greens to set up the Inquiry.

The Inquiry, itself, was described as

‘… one of the most outrageous abuses of power and process seen in the history of the Senate.’

The editor’s language became even more intemperate when he described the Inquiry as a

‘… voodoo mix of conspiracies and prejudices about the Newman government.’

Readers of the Courier Mail might be forgiven for missing, amongst the hyperbole, the facts that the Inquiry is targeted at investigating the disposition of moneys flowing from the Commonwealth toward Queensland in the days after the Newman Government came to power; the propriety of the Commonwealth’s devolving powers to issue environmental approvals to the Queensland State government; the separation of powers and judicial independence in Queensland; and the extent to which Queensland government policies and practices are consistent with international human rights obligations.

These terms of reference raise, among other things, issues of possible misappropriation of Commonwealth funds, originating from the taxpayer, by a State government. The focus of the inquiry appears to be whether those funds were applied to party political purposes here in Queensland.

These are important issues involving possible high-level government corruption and misuse of taxpayer funds.

The prospect of the Newman Government being released From federal restraints on approval of development on environmental grounds is disturbing and, seemingly, an appropriate area for inquiry by a body truly independent of that government.

There has been a series of revelations of political donations to the Newman Government or individuals, therein, principally, by proponents of development and mining proposals being closely followed or preceded by favourable legislation or administrative actions which have benefitted those donors.

The premier, Campbell Newman, is strongly supportive of developers and miners, seemingly, over many other public policy considerations.

Premier Newman has declared, on a number of occasions, that Queensland is ‘open for business’.

In very recent times, legislation was rushed through the Parliament under cover of darkness to remove, effectively, the public’s right to object to huge mining developments.

It is informative to compare the response of the Courier Mail to this decision by the Senate to establish an Inquiry to its editorial reaction to the announcement of other recent inquiries which may have been thought by some to have political, as well as public policy, motivations .

For example, on 9 February, this year, the newspaper’s headline blared

Royal Commission into Trade Unions is Overdue’.

This opinion piece was attributed to unidentified ‘staff writers’. It is tempting to speculate that none of the ‘staff writers’ wished their by-line to be used to identify them as endorsing the establishment of an inquiry that clearly had a strongly partisan purpose.

The ‘staff writers’ began with a series of unsupported assertions, an example of which was:

‘It is no secret that unions… are a haven for crooks and swindlers.’

The writers then heaped praise upon Prime Minister Tony Abbott for having the courage to look into the shadowy world of trade unions. The writers compared PM Abbott, favourably, with Premier Newman, who was also cast in a favourable light.

The staff writers drew favourable connections between PM Abbott’s campaign against the criminal trade unionists and Premier Newman’s legislative campaign against motorcycle gangs in Queensland. It is worthy of note that the manner in which Mr. Newman’s government has legislated, purportedly, against “bikies” has also been controversial, including among experts on law enforcement.

The staff writers ended their by laying down the gauntlet to the Opposition Leader, Bill Shorten, to

‘… play a prominent role in stamping out the cancer of corruption.’

Similarly, on 7 October 2013, the same or different ‘staff writers’ welcomed the announcement of the Home Insulation Program, or ‘pink batts’ Inquiry by the then newly elected Abbott Government. Many observers felt that the decision to establish this Inquiry into a subject that had been investigated by a Parliamentary Committee, an administrative inquiry, the CSIRO, coroners from New South Wales and Queensland, and the auditor-general was politically motivated.

Political motivation was not a word in the vocabulary of Courier-Mail staff writers on that occasion.

The opinion piece ran under the headline:

Next insulation inquiry merits the whole truth’.

The piece concluded by expressing the satisfaction of the authors that the terms of reference drawn up by the Abbott cabinet,

‘… included the ability to call former Labor ministers, including Mr Rudd and Mr Garrett, to testify as to what they really knew.’

It is the case that political institutions can establish inquiries with mixed motives. Very few decisions of politicians do not involve some calculation of political advantage as well as public benefit.

It is a legitimate concern, however, when the political calculus appears to dominate the considerations of the public good.

It is important that journalists and news organisations monitor and report both the public benefit and political advantage aspects of politicians’ actions so that the public is informed about these matters.

The public and, especially, the journalists’ readers are entitled to accept a degree of balance, consistency and impartiality in the way this task is carried out.

The recent history of the Courier-Mail in reporting the establishment of public inquiries shows that that news organisation, and its journalists (who, presumably, have little choice in the matter), have fallen well below these basic journalistic standards.

And have we now forgotten that we spent eight years in Iraq with that same coalition on the pretext of training the new Iraqi Army to deal with any subsequent incursion. Now, just five years later it appears that this same western trained Iraqi army has all but collapsed and can’t even protect its own people. So isn’t it reasonable to ask just what kind of training we gave them over that eight year period? What the hell were we doing?

It’s obvious to anyone that Iraq was a far better governed nation under Sadam Hussien than it is today. It was wealthier, militarily stronger and more than capable of defending itself against its immediate neighbours.Today, it resembles a basket case.

Why hasn’t America intervened in Syria? The reality is that we know nothing of what these air strikes will achieve and will be given nothing but heavily censored, favourably worded reports of “ongoing successes” as the campaign drags on till whenever.Civilian casualties will be concealed or minimised, if not redacted, so as not to upset our delicate sensitivities or impact upon our support. It will be years before the truth comes out.

The strength of Islamic State seems to be somewhere between 20,000 and 100,000 depending on which source you believe. Such a disparity in their perceived numbers suggests that nobody really knows. Western intelligence looks to be somewhat flawed. They seem to be making it up as they go along, just like they did prior to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. It is the 2003 conflict where today’s problems were born. Michael Brull of New Matilda gives a detailed account of how ISIS came into being; the result of yet another monumental blunder by the invading, conquering Western coalition.

Defence minister David Johnston has acknowledged weakness in the Iraqi army while Islamic State (Isis) forces are “extremely adaptive” and growing rapidly – making “quite a long campaign” likely for Australian forces.

A western guess is 5,000 fighters in January, but that number had grown to 8,000 in June, 15,000 a month ago and was now 30,000 and growing. If that’s the case aren’t we trying to prevent a reveloution. What numbers does it take to declare the Sunni uprising to have a legitimate cause? The Viet Cong were equally demonized and de-humanized when we went to war with them and they were in our region. However were off to support a half- hearted Iraqi army when the paper work has been cleared after the holiday which might end tonight. Let’s not surprise ISIS mid party. Does anybody get the sense that Abbott has been running a Pythonesque charade here for 3 weeks for his own benefit? If anybody leaks the truth it’s 10 years 20 if you inadvertantly name someone.

In discussions with the prime minister in Iraq, I’ve (Johnston) told him this is a fight the Iraqis must fight.”The defence minister described Australian defence forces as “one of the most restrictive” when it came to avoiding civilian casualties.“This aspect of our operations is at the forefront of our mind,” he said. However according to Obama the leader of this coalition that’s no longer the case. So has Johnston been told yet or is he just blagging us the Abbott way?  Truth”let’s not have any civilian casualties, let’s stay focused on the task” sounds total hogwash. Does he really believe ISIS will be in the open desert waving their flags at us or head to towns and commingle.

Tony Abbott reiterated that his government’s national security measures were directed towards terrorism, not a religion. Sorry their focus will be directed at people. People of the security agencies choosing as they did during the Vietnam War. That is anybody that disagrees with them and that will remain on file and impact on their lives.

Abbott’s Churchillian  message to Iraq

“In these uncertain times, I have three messages for the Iraqi people”, “First, our government will do everything possible to kill ISIS  so get out of our way fuckers don’t commingle. Second, our intelligence measures at home and abroad are directed guessing who they are don’t wear black, a burqa or live in a town. And third, live normally and wave while we try to scare the terrorists with bombs so they will act abnormally and give themselves up”

The five-point plan used to justify fighting wars is being deployed in media again

The five-point plan used to justify fighting wars is being deployed in media again

The government has been using the same techniques and devices of propaganda and persuasion that were brought out to justify the Iraq war of 2003, the removal of Colonel Gaddafi in 2011 and the proposed attacks on the Assad regime in Syria in 2013.

Step 1. Highlight atrocities

We have claimed the moral high ground, using atrocity propaganda. Tony Abbott does this on a regular basis even though our allies behead people as .

Step 2. Communicate moral obligation

The enemy is evil and to do nothing in the face of such evil would amount to dereliction of moral duty.We must stop them. If we do not, then we are no better than them and evil will prosper. “They are against god”…Tony Abbott

Step 3. Deny enemy’s humanity

“the propagandist’s purpose is to make one set of people forget that certain other sets of people are human”. Death Cult, Medieval, a cancer

Step 4. Say intervention is for the people

if you are averting a humanitarian catastrophe then you can act. We have to protect the civilians and civilian-populated areas under threat of attack. Salvation is a just cause.

Step 5. Raise threat to national security

Illustrate that this far-away, evil regime constitutes a threat to national security, here and now. The danger becomes localised. Military action is urgent. ISIS “would come to hit us here very quickly –indeed there have already been plots.”

However much technology and times may change, the techniques of propaganda and persuasion remain largely the same. Today even more so in your face.

Andrew Bolt got his “alleged” “alleged” story from the Guardian doesn’t mention Scott M. New Security laws what are the chances of Truth vs 10 years jail?

Nauru child sex abuse allegations to be examined in new inquiry…..Andrew Bolt

Because Morrison wants to stop the “chatter” Not mentioned in Andrew Bolt’s Blog.

This is the source and the bullshit attributed to the lies Bolt gets paid to distribute and why his lawyers are paid hefty amounts to protect Newscorp from conviction.

Scott Morrison says reports charity workers helped children protest against offshore detention policy will also be investigated

The federal government has announced a further inquiry into children in detention on Nauru,

The immigration minister, Scott Morrison, confirmed 10 employees of Save the Children, a non-government organisation contracted to provide welfare, education and protection for children on Nauru, had been told to leave the island.

Morrison has appointed former integrity commissioner and acting department head Philip Moss to head the wide-ranging inquiry investigating “all of these matters”.

The 10 staff members told to leave Nauru are not alleged to have engaged in misconduct against children, but are accused of encouraging protests, complaints of abuse and even of coaching self-harm.

The chief executive of Save The Children, Paul Ronalds, rejected the minister’s allegations and said the governmement had not provided his organisation with any evidence of staff wrongdoing before the claim was leaked to the media, or since.

Nor had it received the report cited by Morrison.

Five Save The Children staff were suspended in August over allegations they had supported a detainee protest by giving a “thumbs up” sign to demonstrators.

“In that case, all of the allegations against Save the Children staff were found to be unsubstantiated, and all of the staff returned to full duties,” Ronalds said.

Save the Children said in an earlier statement instances of child self-harm were “a reality that has been well-documented”.

“The evidence is very clear to us: the long-term and prolonged detention of children has a devastating impact on the mental and physical well-being of children. This can no longer be denied.”

Morrison said he would be appalled if accusations of sexual abuse proved true, but that the fabrication of allegations to further a political agenda was also serious.

Guardian Australia has published extensive evidence of child abuse and instances of self-harm on Nauru, including:

Australian federal police confirmed to Guardian Australia it had received a referral from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection. It had not started an investigation.

100 police to arrest one man not bent on terror. Bolt’s Bog this morning hinted at ” not tiny or unrepresentative minority” He got it wrong again

As it happened: Man charged after FBI tip-off sparks anti-terrorism raids across Melbourne suburbs of Seabrook, Kealba, Flemington, Broadmeadows and Meadow Heights

Updated 34 minutes agoTue 30 Sep 2014, 2:58pm

A man has been charged with intentionally making funds available to a terrorist organisation, after more than 100 police officers carried out raids across five Melbourne suburbs.

The Australian Federal Police and Victoria Police conducted seven search warrants in Seabrook, Kealba, Meadow Heights, Broadmeadows and Flemington.

Following an FBI tip-off, a 23-year-old man was arrested at a Seabrook home and it will be alleged he paid for a US citizen to go and fight in Syria.

Police say they do not believe the man intended to carry out a terrorist attack on Australian soil.

Look back on how the day unfolded.

Fanatics, not Muslims, are our enemy

Amanda Vanstone reminds us how in history we stood shoulder to shoulder with Muslims during various wars. That’s well and good and she reminds us that non-Muslim Australians would do well to ensure that any criticism is focused not on Muslims generally but on fanatical Muslims. Equally, Muslim Australians need to be loud, strong and clear in their condemnation of the fanatics.

This is a time to show disdain for the shock-jocks and jingo-junkies who whip up rednecks with their rubbish. In doing so, we will remind ourselves of the best of Australia.

The problem is that the fanatic shock-jocks at home the real dividers of this country are right in front of us and Vanstone fails to name and them. Which makes her gutless and she should be ashamed as she has the platform and the voice but fails to use it. “Shame” was an Ingmar Bergman film done in 1968 during the Vietnam war. It is about a couple who try to isolate themselves from a civil war that is going on around them by moving away as far as possible but get caught up in it nevertheless. It was about guilt  the Vietnam war and not doing anything. Not doing anything is supporting the worst and we all stand accused.

“Men, women and children — familiar like mine — are being burnt and blasted to death in Vietnam and I have absolutely no idea what may be happening to me and the few people I love ten years, five years, two months from now. SHAME is central to the experience we are living now”

Vanstone’s article ends where it should have begun naming and shaming those agents of hate Newscorp  2GB  those that are glorifying this war that is so complex that it defies any of our political class to explain it other than the futile slogan of annhilating ISIL.

Bolt, Devine,Henderson,Rule Jones are cloned Fox News media puppets that give rise to the shadows that our security forces find so hard to realize. They more than anybody amplify the darkness the doom and gloom portrayed by our current government for the past 20 years. The LNP has grabbed hold of a chicken little approach to  politics and these fear mongers do their bidding in amplifying it. Vanstone fails to name them which is as good as letting them be.

Bolt’s article in the Herald Sun today is written as if he was forewarned of Vanstone’s commentary in The Age. It’s a joke the man who has accused Islam outright for every evil that currently exists. That Islam is a stain on the way we live today turns around and merely says it’s only a  fringe element we need to be careful of. Vanstone and Bolt today are like two tag team wrestlers. Bolt has even used Vanstone’s words to name his favorite punching bag the ABC for disseminating hatred. If Vanstone didn’t tell him what her Age article was going to be then Bolt must feel smug that somebody at SMH is his mole. Bolt’s attempt today wear the halo is about as effective as putting on make up, lipstick and a dress and telling us he’s had a gender change. Either way  he is an extremely ugly human being. He tagged Vanstone and tried a hypocritical, tongue in cheek body slam.

“We cannot afford any more these shock jocks of the ABC, these inciters of hate”

Wholesale bombing, the pretense that the bombs  only harm  ISIS  a media made enemy is a total denial of what those bombs actually do. The damage done is as much as was done in  the missiling of Gaza or the bombing and napalming of commies in North Vietnam. To go in on the ground and fight the mythical ISIS is just as futile ISIS will dissolve to rise again somewhere else. You can’t fight an enemy you can’t identify but an enemy that can clearly identify us. All you  do is commit wholesale indiscriminant slaughter. That will only grow sympathy for a political ideology that gave birth to ISIS. The history of stupidity has shown us this.

We need to shut down the warmongers those that give life to this myth. We need to win the hearts and minds of those on the ground who wish to fight it and can see who the enemy is. ASIO finds sweet FA it’s  Islamic Australia that’s our best line of defense now that we have decided to poke the hornet’s nest.  The Arab nation states our allies are more aware of this than anyone.  Do you think for one second anyone of them would syndicate  Bolt’s news commentary. History will shame and blame Bolt that is inevitable Vanstone won’t.

“Regrettably, for some time to come, Australians will have to endure more security than we’re used to, and more inconvenience than we would like,” he said.

“There may be more restrictions on some, so that there can be more protection for others.

“The potential is there for a journalist or a blogger who writes about a special intelligence operation to go to jail for 10 years,”

From the Iraq war to terrorism laws, politicians are using the idea of an irrefutable “national interest” to avoid community debate and parliamentary scrutiny, writes Danielle Chubb.

Before you do that, you must tell me what the national interest is.

Who gets to decide the national interest?

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop seems unwilling to entertain the idea that the national interest might be open for debate.  “We would only act in our national interest.” Whatever the government decides, it will be “in the national interest”.

The idea that foreign policy is an elite decision-making arena, beyond the ken of the average Australian, and should not be submitted to the vagaries of Parliament, is one that serves governments well. Labor in opposition knows it too will benefit from such a formulation when in power. It is in the Opposition’s interest to continue the myth.

Why should complex legislation regarding carbon trading regulations be considered by Parliament and not questions of national security? The argument that intelligence briefings provide the clarity required to inform such decision-making is a smokescreen. We learned this back in 2003, after we had been told that reliable and sensitive intelligence pointed to the possession of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Today John Howard is saying sorry but….

When we submit to these arguments, we sacrifice exactly the democratic values we profess to defend. A functioning and responsive parliament is at the core of this

The Australian public deserves to be part of the conversation. Once troops are committed, it is difficult for politicians to properly represent the views of their constituents, for fear of appearing to denigrate the work of those Australians putting their lives on the line. It is imperative that we allow such opinions to be aired – through the democratic mechanisms we are so fortunate to have at our disposal – before we embark on military adventures.

Islamic State wants Australians to attack Muslims: terror expert

It’s in the interests of Islamic State for Muslims in Australia to be attacked or for their mosques to be attacked, because doing so would help divide the Australian community. But we should be very clear…

Stating the obvious is well and good. It’s very important to remember, whether here in Australia or overseas – it’s only a tiny minority of the Muslim community that are ever involved in any kind of extreme action. The vast majority are decent, ordinary people, who shouldn’t be attacked, and who should feel as respected and protected as any other member of the community.

The most effective form of good policing happens at an individual community level: having police officers on the ground, at local stations, involved with and knowing the Islamic community, and making sure that senior members of those community know that should anything happen – such as an attack on a mosque – that the police  take that seriously. It’s really important for police to protect the Islamic community. If they don’t, there’s a risk that people will feel isolated and that’s not in Australia’s best interests.

As for Islamic State, if they or their sympathizers can arrange a situation where we see parts of the Australian community pitted against each other, then that’s exactly what they want. That’s the kind of situation that breeds more sympathy for their cause, so that disenchanted young people end up either going overseas or else taking actions in their own country

Today we saw  AFP,ASIO and Police 800 of them raid,  televise and proudly advertise a one way action the total opposite of the advise offered by the UK  with a longer history a much bigger Muslim population than we have, with a far larger population overall. The above community approach not generally applied by our security forces here has managed to keep British terrorism to 7 instances over 8 years. It also needs to be pointed out that no instance was discovered by increased security but rather by an aware public noticing something odd. The Australian approach seems an antithesis to the British who have had years of experience with sectarian conflict in Ireland. Yesterday seems little more than a publicity exercise with a high potential to backfire.

I DIDN’T even finish my arts degree, but I still say that the Chief Scientist and two Nobel prize winners should pull their heads in.

The ABC and staff  are so above Newscorp and Andrew Bolt

“If you think arguments on global warming are best settled by credentials, then don’t read another word. I’m an idiot.”

Even Andrew Bolt get’s it right sometimes. He certainly didn’t finish his Arts Degree he barely started it and merely deprived someone else of the opportunity. It’s the idiot aspect that reveals itself and the lack of either rationality or balance.

“Viewers would have concluded no scientists question that the world is heating dangerously and man is to blame. The sceptical scientists I know personally must just be hoaxers.”

He sounds like a child ready to throw a tantrum not an adult open to a discussion.  On this topic it is  precisely what he is a moron.

Bolt doesn’t prove or disprove anything he merely states the obvious that there is a minority of scientists that don’t necessarily agree with all the results put forward by the majority for a case of Global Warming. But that’s the nature of science disagreement. You could argue because all the scientific errors made throughout history is the reason science and the world progressed.  Bolt offers no alternative to progress and investigation. The majority of climate scientists seem to believe there is a necessary reason to move foward.

Bolt the self-confessed idiot only believes in  incontrovertible laws of which there are very few. Not Newton, Not Einstein, Not Quantum Physics so the idiot is simply asking for the impossible. If one believes money and power influence science then  the skeptics certainly exemplify the conservatives, much the same as flat earthers did in their day. The majority of scientists are progressives as their results demand a necessary change foward  which however sits against the financial interests of Capital. Why would the most rational thinkers of the world ask the most wealthiest to change? After all isn’t that where their finance ultimately comes from?

Bolt doesn’t broach the question  he merely uses it as a vehicle to have ago at the ABC as a leftist organization with some bias against his  fatuous  conservative position. The man failed his Arts degree he didn’t just  finish it.

His side of the capitalist ledger always turns to the maintenance of profit  to justify  reasons not to change. The ABC in 1984 had a budget of approx $900 mill today it’s $800 mill and has 84% support of the Australian population. More importantly 80% believe in its integrity. That alone places it so far in front of  Newscorp and Bolt it’s lickspittle

Abbott makes a statement which and no attempt to explain why so much press was in attendance.

How much fruit salad does it take to impress us

600 police the whole of the deployment sent to Iraq needed to arrest one 22year old

Tony Abbott says the intelligence received is that an Australian “who is apparently quite senior in ISIL” was directing networks back in Australia to perform “demonstration killings”.

This is not just suspicion, this is intent and that’s why the police and security agencies decided to act in the way they have.
Court in Brisbane has adjourned a bail hearing for a man accused
of aiding the terrorist group Jabhat al-Nusra. However it is quite possible that this group an enemy of ISIL and Assad will become an Australian/US ally in the fight against ISIL in Syria.
We will arm the FSA The Free Syrian Army who are inexperienced give them 3 weeks training in Saudi Arabia and send them into fight experienced fighters isn’t that sending lambs to slaughter. Jabhat al Nusra has already offered to deal with ISIL in Syria and is a most likely ally.

I’m sorry but what the fuck’s going on? Other than insuring the build up of resentment here and in the region. Is that the sign of intelligent leadership?
