ING customer Roger lost $16,000 to a scam. While others have been given full refunds, he was only returned $6,000 – ABC News

A man on his phone in a yard.

What’s the Scam? Banks are covered you’re not

  • In short: Customers are getting different outcomes when they make complaints against their banks for not refunding money lost to phishing scams
  • What’s next? The federal government said last month it would make changes to keep banks accountable when their customers are the subject of scams

The financial complaints authority appears to have made inconsistent rulings on whether to give customers refunds after phishing scams, based on whether customers admit to clicking dodgy links.

Assange be Wary: The Dangers of a US Plea Deal – » The Australian Independent Media Network

The American Deal has always been a RIGGED DECK.

The deal: First YOU PLEAD GUILTY THEN – It has never changed since the days of signing the historic and broken Treaties with the Indian Nations that saw them locked up on Reservations or Jails

Should any plea deal be successfully reached and implemented, thereby making Assange admit guilt, the terms of his return to Australia, assuming he survives any stint on US soil, will be onerous. In effect, the US would merely be changing the prison warden while adjusting the terms of observation. In place of British prison wardens will be Australian overseers unlikely to ever take kindly to the publication of national security information.

Trump Fox Mail In Voting

Media Capitalism is where the ratings are the product for sale anything else is merely a tool in the manufacture of the rating numbers. The “camp followers” are the numbers attempting to follow and replicate the biggest Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News

As president, Trump was fully enmeshed in the alternate reality spun by his TV propagandists. He would spend hours a day watching right-wing cable news channels and sent nearly 1,300 tweets in response to Fox News and Fox Business alone from September 2018 to the end of his presidency. Trump treated Fox hosts as members of his kitchen cabinet, enacting policy based on what he saw on their shows and seeking their counsel in private. People would go on his favorite channels seeking to influence his administration’s decision-making, at times snaring government contracts or presidential clemency because he happened to be watching.

Australian multiculturalism: Our greatest achievement? – Pearls and Irritations

Melbourne Australia - December 3, 2018: Unidentified people cross street in downtown Melbourne Australia.

Immigration has dramatically changed Australia, mainly for the better. I don’t think any country has done it as well. If I could be more precise, I think Australia has benefited most from refugees. Whilst the first generation of refugees may often lack skills and education, they more than make up for it in enterprise, courage and risk-taking. That enterprise and high aspirations are often expressed through their children. Refugees are by definition risk-takers who will abandon all for a new life. They select themselves much better than a migration officer can ever select them.

The Coalition Hate Childless People! – » The Australian Independent Media Network

Now let me make it clear that I have nothing against people being in business and making a buck. After all, this is a capitalist system and I’m not going to suggest that those benevolent employers who only exist to give people jobs should be the first to be lined up against the wall and shot when the revolution comes. However, it does strike me as a little inconsistent when businesses argue that they’re the ones taking the risks and so they should be entitled to great rewards, only to turn around and say that the risk didn’t work out so someone should do something because life shouldn’t be this unfair when they’ve taken the risk and started/taken over/inherited a business. We all remember how some businesses took the JobKeeper money and kept it, even though they made a profit and there was no obligation on them to establish that they lost revenue during the pandemic. They didn’t even have to prove their parental status.

Not too quick: Tax Office dithering on Lendlease scam puts whistleblowers at risk – Michael West

Lendlease, ATO, whistleblowers

How many corporate directors or managers are today sitting in our jails? How many even went through the justice process? It’s generally a rapid process for those now sitting in jail for mental health, addiction, and poverty reasons. Some like Indigenous Australians too quick. Getting out is hard and back in too easy.

If Lendlease tax whistleblower goes down in court while the Tax Office continues to dither for more than four years enforcing its ‘double dipping’ rules against the property giant, the question could well be asked, why would anybody do the right thing and blow the whistle again? Michael West reports.

A “Plea Deal” Julian is required to plead Guilty. Now that’s what America calls a bargain

The United States is considering a plea deal that would allow WikiLeaks founder and whistleblower Julian Assange to return to Australia, the Sydney Morning Herald reported Monday.

U.S. Ambassador to Australia Caroline Kennedy told the Morning Herald that there could be a “resolution” to Assange’s now-four-year detention in Britain. Assange, an Australian citizen, has been held in a London prison since 2019 while combating U.S. extradition efforts. He faces 18 criminal charges in the U.S., 17 of which allege violations of the Espionage Act.

Sixteen Young People in Montana Just Won a Historic Climate Lawsuit – Mother Jones

Two white youths raise their fists into the air in celebration. They stand next to a bright blue sign that partially reads "Montana Youth Making." In the background, others give high fives.

Would Dan allow a decision like this to happen in Australia? Or would kids trying to sue the State in Australia be decreed “Vexatious Litigants” and have them arrested for contempt?

A healthy climate is included in your constitutional rights, at least if you live in Montana. On Monday, District Court Judge Kathy Seeley sided with the 16 young plaintiffs who sued Montana three years ago, arguing that its pro–fossil fuels legislation violated their right to a safe environment. Seeley ruled in the case, Held v. Montana, that “plaintiffs have a fundamental constitutional right to a clean and healthful environment, which includes climate as part of the environmental life support system.”

Chris Hedges: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. – The Israel Lobby’s Useful Idiot – scheerpost.com

The combination of the blood line related requirements to be considered Jewish by the Orthodox Rabbinical Court and the restriction of marriage requiring religious ceremonies shows an intent to maintain race purity. At its core, this is no different than the desire for pure blooded Aryans in Nazi Germany or pure blooded whites in the Jim Crow Southern United States.

Those who support these discriminatory laws and embrace Israeli apartheid are blinded by willful ignorance, racism or cynicism. Their goal is to dehumanize Palestinians, champion an intolerant Jewish chauvinism and entice the naïve and the gullible into justifying the unjustifiable. Kennedy, bereft of a moral compass and a belief system rooted in verifiable fact, has not only failed the Palestinians, he has failed us.

Fighting for a Voice

A lot is made of the comparison between this referendum and the 1999 referendum on a republic, which took that question off the table for at least a generation. There is one fundamental difference, however: the Liberal–National Coalition is a spent force in Australian politics and, with its track record on climate change, women’s rights, integrity in politics and marriage equality, its opposition to the Voice may well relegate it to an irretrievable status, a place of opprobrium and irrelevance from which it may never recapture an electorate weary of hateful culture wars.”

There is an enormous moral disjunct between being Jewish and Israel

A great illustration of how much of the media totally overlooks the huge grassroots campaign for Yes is the fact that the Jewish community’s far-reaching campaign has been unsighted in mainstream media coverage of the referendum.

The Stand Up campaign sums up much about the community wide activity missed by the media saying: “The Jewish Community has a long and proud history of working together with first Australians on their journey towards justice and reconciliation. And this year, we have an opportunity to recognise first Australians in our constitution and give them a say on the issues that matter to their communities.

The Australian economy is increasingly becoming a war economy. One might well ask Why Albo why?

For some scandalous unexplained reason Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, after he announced the inquiry (31-7-23), allowed Peter Dutton to have a secret meeting with AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw and the AFP now changed their evidence. It is my understanding that Opposition Leaders cannot meet with the head of any public service department unless approved by the Government which raises the question: Why did Albanese approve Dutton meeting with Kershaw?

Spies Like Us: how natsec and Attorneys-G meddle with justice, whistleblower David McBride – Michael West

David McBride

“National security claims” too easily trump the delivery of justice. Afghan war crimes whistleblower David McBride is a case in point.

Dreyfus seems quite content with an unfair prosecution and one that is infected by improper motive. He’s quite happy for a court, deprived of context and adjudicating to the strict letter of the law (that Dreyfus himself has said were not fit for purpose).

It’s within his authority to do so. The public interest in halting the prosecution is clear. But sadly the Attorney’s been captured by the security apparatus. The AAT Deputy President’s revelation two weeks ago proves that.

Dreyfus is willing to rubber stamp a confidentiality order that improperly tilts the adjudication in favour of the security establishment. He’s unwilling to correct an injustice that would cross the path of that same establishment,

In this, Dreyfus is like many of our senior Labor and Coalition politicians. Over more than two decades they’ve poured hundreds of billions into the national security apparatus which is now bigger, more powerful and influential than it has ever been.

In Parliament, applause is regularly showered on our spies, police and security bureaucrats. They can apparently do no wrong.  But privately the politicians are fearful. They fear what might happen to their secrets if they aren’t totally supportive of “national security”.  No one in government or opposition wants to get offside with the secret state.

Of course, that doesn’t absolve Dreyfus. Of all our Federal Ministers he’s the one with specific responsibility as first law officer to uphold the integrity of our legal system, especially the vital principle of open justice.

He’s failing to do his duty because he’s weak in the face of Australia’s national security apparatus. He lacks the moral fortitude to sit in the Attorney-General’s seat.

As a result of his cowardice a good man will go to jail and, at the same time, democratic integrity will suffer.

How Israel occupied Itself: The Way the Crisis on the West Bank Came Home

A Netanyahu government unconstrained by the courts could engage in favoritism in contracts, licenses, and legislation of all sorts. The fear of such things has led 28% percent of Israelis, including a surprising number of young married professionals, to admit that they are at least considering leaving the country. Many claim they fear that “the government is going to take their money.” Although 600,000 to a million Israelis are typically out of the country at any time, studying or working elsewhere, they usually do come home sooner or later. Now, however, relocation agencies report that such returns are plummeting. There has also been a 20% drop in immigration to Israel this year and that shortfall would undoubtedly be even more serious were it not for the Russian Jews fleeing their ever more unstable, war-embroiled country. Reuters reports that investors in the usually vibrant Israeli high-tech sector that accounts for about 14% of the country’s $500 billion gross domestic product are now keeping about 80% of their new start-ups abroad. Many tech companies have also moved both their bank accounts and some of their assets out of the country.
