How to make sure RoboDebt could never happen again: ditch Westminster, embrace the republic – Michael West

While “Governing” dominates the historic mindset and is passed down generationally we will remain a Colony whose interests lie in serving someone else rather than the people of this nation. It’s time to say YES to remind us on whose land this nation was born and YES to a Republic for who future governments should be elected to serve, ALL its people. The French did it with a Revolution we can do it with a referendum ballot box.

In RoboDebt’s wake, our very system of government needs to be bulldozed and rebuilt. Rex Patrick argues it is time for a republican model, for separation of powers.

Robodebt crimes: Who should pay and how?

The double standard is glaring, further illuminated by the findings of the Robodebt Royal Commission. While the AFP dithered for years investigating the blue-chippers from PwC for selling state secrets to foreign corporations, it was as quick as a rat up a drainpipe when it came to sending out letters to Centrelink clients threatening them with prison sentences unless they paid their Robodebts. Why aren’t Americans happier about the economy? | Robert Reich | The Guardian

construction workers prepare steel for a crane at the site of JPMorgan Chase‘s new 1,388-foot headquarters at 270 Park Avenue in Midtown East on May 18, 2023 in New York City.

Post Covid and Trump America is on the up again economically. Yet the feeling of well-being isn’t. Australia is also on the way up with the ALP in charge. However, we have a feeling of well-being generated by the fact the LNP is no longer the government. While the ALP seems a united team nationally the political fringes Greens, Independents, and One Nation still hold a measure of sway.

However, in America, there’s a serious division between the States which is reflected in the Democratic Party nationally. Biden seems to have to struggle to get things done. Meanwhile, SCOTUS makes America seem a Fascist Dictatorship rather than the great Democratic experiment with its recent rulings.

In other words, the economy is getting better overall – but overall has become a less useful gauge of wellbeing as the rich get richer, the poor grow poorer, and the working middle is under worsening siege.

True Patriotism Is the Opposite of Trump’s White Christian Nationalism | The Smirking Chimp

Peter Dutton’s “We know what to do for Indigenous Australians just because they don’t, isn’t our fault” is very Trumpist

America’s problem is not as described by Trump and his White Christian Nationalism — that the nation is losing its whiteness or dominant religion, that too many foreigners are crossing its borders, that men are competing in women’s sports or teachers are not celebrating the nation’s history.

America’s problem is that too many Americans — including its lawmakers — are failing to understand what patriotism requires.

Bottom line: Officially, America will continue to fulminate over China’s human-rights abuses and aggressive moves, threatening more “decoupling” of the two economies.

Unofficially — unless China is foolish enough to mount a full-scale invasion of Taiwan — the decoupling won’t happen, because American corporations want access to China’s huge market and its cheap and compliant manufacturing workers.

Foreign policy is for the cameras. When it comes to the real connections between China and the United States, profits speak louder than policy.

Never More Relevant: Ted Kaczynski, Technology and Trauma – » The Australian Independent Media Network

His terrorism had been principled, rational, his Weltanschauung outlined in his manifesto. To suggest medical illness and disturbance was to give into the pathologizing agenda, something that would render him mad and therefore illegitimate as a thinker.

Far from being mad, the dystopia of Kaczynski’s industrial society has found solid roots. And the forces behind it, be they the myriad of social networks, data hungry platforms and the increasingly agitated discussion about Artificial Intelligence and its generative properties, implicates us all.

Kaczynski defied the authorities and the technological state he so despised, eluding capture for almost two decades. Being incapable of summoning the forces to destroy technology, he eschewed it, becoming a rustic version of the Savage in Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, the man who “ate civilization”, and in so doing ate his own wickedness.

He lived in a cabin near Lincoln, Montana, a place in every sense off the grid: no electricity, no television, no telephone. He moved about with a bicycle. He took an interest in regeneration in nature. He even foraged. This was his way of romancing the notion of the “pre-industrial city”, as he termed it, where the “19th century frontiersman” could create “change himself, by his own choice.” Change for the “modern man”, in contrast, was “imposed”.

Big business cries poor on wages even as profits mount – Pearls and Irritations

Businessman figurine looking at the growth of stacked coins. Saving money for finance accounting.

Because they are so low-paid, and mainly part-time, these people account for only about 11 per cent of the nation’s total wage bill. So, as the commission says, the pay rise ‘‘will make only a modest contribution to total wages growth in 2023-24 and will consequently not cause or contribute to any wage-spiral’’.

But that’s not the impression you’d get from all the wailing and gnashing of teeth by the main employer group, the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. It claims ‘‘an arbitrary increase of this magnitude consigns Australia to high inflation, mounting interest rates and fewer jobs’’.

Humans have bottom feeders as well. You could argue that scammers, internet trolls and others that go out of their way to financially or mentally hurt others are opportunistic predators, as are those that assault others either physically or mentally. It wouldn’t be hard to suggest that those businesses with practices that are just on the right side of the law are also opportunistic and clearly out to exploit the intent of the law to make a living.

It’s greedflation, stupid

And here’s how to stop it

, Democratic lawmakers and the Biden administration should seek legislation that puts more of the onus of fighting inflation on big corporations. Such legislation would:

— Allow the Justice Department to bust up monopolies (and prevent further consolidation through mergers and acquisitions) when three or fewer corporations have more than half the sales of a particular market.

— Direct the Federal Trade Commission to find that any such corporation has engaged in unlawful price gouging whenever it has raised prices higher than the rate of inflation, and impose a fine that would claw back those unlawful gains.

— Permit the Treasury Department to impose a windfall profits tax on large corporations, above a specific reasonable rate of return or profit margin.

If Republicans won’t go along, Biden and the Democrats should make this a major campaign issue for 2024.

They should ask the public: Do you want more jobs and higher wages, or do you want large corporations making fatter profits by raising prices?

Descending the greasy pole all the way down from Liberal Party heavyweight and fundraiser Peter Costello, we have Editorial Director James Chessell (who is an ex-Liberal staffer for Joe Hockey), his 2IC Tory Maguire (whose husband is a Liberal Party linked lobbyist), Editor in Chief of the AFR Michael Stutchbury, a true believer in the virtue of big business whose ideology is to the right of the Liberal Party.
