As Jews, we do not accept that criticism of Israel’s government is antisemitic

A pro-Palestinian protest in Melbourne in November.

Melbourne’s Jewish Community is divided not everyone supports Israel and they suffer the consequences for coming out saying “Not in our name”. In Yiddish they are real Menschen and behave in a manner Judaism expects Menschliekeitn with Niceness, kindness, decency, and humaneness. They are, however, currently experiencing ignorance and chaos of not only growing anti-semitism but also being threatened shunned, and shamed by their own communities as traitors. These are people to be admired for the risks they take. They deserve a place on a Palestinian wall of the righteous and remembered.

Irreconcilable differences of opinion between Jews are widening, yet the broader Australian public could be forgiven for thinking that all Jews agree. This is in part because most so-called Jewish representative organizations in Australia refuse to represent this diversity of opinion between Jews and have become explicit Israel lobby groups.

The Israel lobby’s conflation of these types of incidents has meant that claims of antisemitism are being exploited to stifle legitimate criticism of Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip and West Bank.

The history and concept of antisemitism risks becoming confused and devalued amid a very real fight worldwide against genuine anti-Jewish racism and an increase in fascist activity. It will lead to real instances of antisemitism being dismissed.

Pro-Israel bias grips CNN | The Electronic Intifada

CNN town hall stage

Israeli spokespeople get a few days or a week to make their case and establish the narrative. Then some Palestinian guests are invited on so that the network can make a nod towards balance.

This time has been the worst to date.

The moral outrage from anchors voiced about 7 October is not routinely brought to bear for the horrors confronting Palestinians for well over 100 days. Nor is there any significant awareness from CNN domestic anchors that the conflict did not begin on 7 October but that Palestinians have been suffering from Israeli violence and forced dispossession for over 75 years.

I do not expect Dana Bash to invite back Mayor Hammoud of Dearborn – or anyone else – for a substantive discussion of Israel’s occupation and apartheid policies. It is, however, long overdue, and her anti-Palestinian bias is part and parcel of the hate gripping media and inspiring anti-Palestinian sentiment in the US.

Shortly after Bash’s interview, an inflammatory op-ed in The Wall Street Journal labeled Dearborn as “America’s jihad capital.”

Given the federal government’s brusque termination of previous agreements entered into by Victoria with purportedly undesirable entities, the Albanese government has a useful precedent. With legal proceedings underway in the International Court of Justice in The Hague seeking to determine whether genocide is taking place in Gaza, along with an interim order warning Israel to abide by the UN Genocide Convention, a sound justification has presented itself. Complicity with genocide – actual, potential or as yet unassessed by a court – can hardly be in Canberra’s interest. Over to you, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Israel’s dignity will be damaged, Hamas will be crowned winner, but the war will end – Pearls and Irritations

map - destination: Israel

Israel’s leadership isn’t about the wisest course of action it’s about material goals to be achieved.  It’s about control over Gaza and its gas fields. Everything we have seen is a cheap investment for Israel”arms for nothing and land for free for the future return. Even the public relations battle later will be relatively nothing compared with the years of wealth to be had. The precedents for their methods have been set in the historical record. You take as much as possible and return as little as required. Israel has the cultural capital to remain the West’s favorite actor because their supporters would need to admit they’ve been scammed all these 100 years. Far from it if one adds the Ben Gurion Canal to the strategic mix The US and UK have been well and truly co-conspirators in the race to dominate World Trade routes over China. This war is for Gaza’s land, gas and devaluation of the Suez Canal

The wisest course of action that Israel should have taken a long time ago was to voluntarily release the security prisoners as a gesture and not just as a concession in negotiations. But there is no chance of that happening – it is too smart. Freeing 1,500 prisoners, as Hamas is asking, is neither a disaster nor is it painful. It will bring the hostages home. Disaster and pain will only result if they are not rescued.Nor would it be a disaster or painful to bring an end to this cursed war, during which Israel lost its humanity without achieving its goals from the indiscriminate killing and destruction, the likes of which have only been seen in the most brutal of wars.

God’s people and colonialism – » The Australian Independent Media Network

It seems that not a lot has been learned when we view the ongoing crisis in Palestine/Israel, where since the late 19th Century Zionists have sought to colonise, take back the land promised to Abraham by God in the book of Genesis. Since 1948 the explosion of the Palestinian peoples has been an ongoing activity, culminating in what we currently see, the devastation of Gaza and the perpetual dehumanisation of those living on the West Bank, with the rhetoric from the Israeli Prime Minister quoting Biblical calls to destroy the Amalekites (Exodus 17:8-15) for the annihilation of Palestinians.

It really does seem that the laws, you shall not kill, you shall not steal only apply to those who are ‘God’s People.’

Therefore, the results of this study, while shocking, should not be surprising, given this context. Through examining the coverage of Yemen in four leading U.S. outlets, it is clear that corporate media are failing to inform the public of many of the basic realities of who Ansar Allah is, why they are carrying out their campaign, and what it would take to end the hostilities, they are perpetuating this war, and therefore are every bit as responsible as the politicians and military commanders who keep the bloodshed going.

Thomas Friedman and Journalism’s Red Lines on Israel–Palestine

Many people are unhappy about some recent pensées from New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, headlined “Understanding the Middle East Through the Animal KingdomOpens in a new tab.” Friedman explains that “Iran is to geopolitics what a recently discovered species of parasitoid wasp is to nature.” He informs us that Lebanon, Yemen, Syria, and Iraq are like caterpillars in which this wasp lays its eggs, and those eggs are the “Houthis, Hezbollah, Hamas and Kataib Hezbollah.”

This is imperialistic blather straight out of the 19th century, except horribly written — imagine Rudyard Kipling after an anvil fell on his head. But the column is useful because it reconnects us to a 1982 incident that illustrates how, when it comes to the Middle East and Israel, the management of the Times has sometimes been to the right of Friedman.

The same thing is true for the Times itself. Somehow it is simultaneously the worst and best newspaper on earth. On the one hand, it runs crimes against human cognition about the insects living in the Middle East. On the other hand, it also regularly produces brilliant investigative reporting, sometimes even about IsraelOpens in a new tab

This complexity is extremely cold comfort for the people who are brutalized by the U.S. and its allies. Nonetheless, it’s important to comprehend if we’re trying to understand reality — something we should want to do, no matter how difficult and frustrating it can be.

Hundreds of videos filmed and shared by Israeli soldiers in Gaza show troops bulldozing houses and mocking Palestinian victims, according to research by the New York Times. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has distanced itself from the content, some of which violates its code of conduct.

The NYT said it reviewed hundreds of videos, including more than 50 clips of Israeli engineering troops using bulldozers, excavators, and explosives to destroy homes, schools, and other civilian structures. Some footage reportedly shows soldiers “vandalizing local shops and school classrooms” and “making derogatory comments about Palestinians.”

The Confessions of Thomas Friedman – CounterPunch.org

Let TF ask what is it that has enabled Gazans and the Houthis to make the world turn on a time; what is it that is exposing Israel’s narrative of victimhood for the farce that it is; and why have peoples across the world been mounting daily protests against Israel’s genocidal war on Palestinians.

Let him also ask why the United States is so openly, brazenly funding and arming the perpetrator of a genocidal war when it should be working very hard to play down its history of war-mongering against the Global South. Can an America that bombs compete with a China that builds?

What is this ‘dangerous moment?’

Is it the discovery by CIA of a Chinese plan to lay siege to Taiwan, Russian forces advancing on the capital of Ukraine, or thousands of Iranian attack boats blockading the Straits of Hormuz? It’s none of these.

Instead, this ‘dangerous moment’ is the result of actions emanating from a tiny sliver of land no larger than the smaller cities in the United States, whose impoverished population of 2.3 million Palestinians has lived in an open-air prison since 2007, and regularly subjected to carpet bombing by Israel, America’s unsinkable aircraft carrier in the Middle East. It is Gaza that has Thomas Friedman (TF) running scared.

What is it about the human spirit (note to self: Palestinians are human, not ‘human animals’) that compels a weak, ethnically cleansed, terrorized people to resist the might and power of the world’s most ‘civilized’ and powerful nation?

Yes, TF admits obliquely that it is an act of resistance by Gazans that now disturbs the USA, Israel and their Western accomplices.

Until the morning of October 7, 2023, the USA, Israel, and their Arab protectorates were blithely convinced that the ‘juggernaut’ of the so-called Abraham Accords would bury the Palestinians forever.

Yet, after nearly four months of the most destructive bombing in recent history, the esteemed NYT columnist is forced to acknowledge that Gaza “is forcing a fundamental rethinking about the Middle East within the Biden administration.” Is the human spirit still capable of such miracles?
