Shireen Abu Akleh’s family ‘incredulous’ after US finds Israeli gunfire ‘likely’ killed Palestinian journalist | World News | Sky News

In this undated photo provided by Al Jazeera, Shireen Abu Akleh, a journalist for Al Jazeera network, stands in an area where the Dome of the Rock shrine at Al-Aqsa Mosque in the Old City of Jerusalem is seen at right in the background. Abu Akleh, a well-known Palestinian female reporter for the broadcaster's Arabic language channel, was shot and killed while covering an Israeli raid in the occupied West Bank town of Jenin early Wednesday, May 11, 2022. (Al Jazeera via AP)

Because Ms Abu Akleh was inconsiderate enough to damage the bullet that killed her no definitive conclusions could be drawn about who fired the shot or what their intent and orders were. Had Ms. Akleh survived the same would have applied, and if nobody was shot no conclusions would have been demanded. Any inconsideration, therefore, lies with the dead journalist who needs to apologize for the fuss she has caused the Israelis.

As with the Israeli IDF, the verdict on Gravity is still out on whether or not an invisible force made the apple fall because nobody saw Gravity do it, or knows its intent.

30 journalists have been killed but far more injured by the IDF since 2000

Ms Abu Akleh is not the first journalist to be killed by Israeli forces – the Paris-based organisation Reporters Without Borders claims that more than 30 journalists, including one Briton, have been killed by the IDF since 2000.

IDF censorship hits an 11-year low

Israel doesn’t just kill, and incarcerate journalists, poets and authors but applies a censorship regimen to all information, and news disseminated in the State. It tries to control it outside its borders as well.

In 2021, the Israeli military censor barred the publication of 129 articles in the media, and interfered with the content of another 1,313, according to data provided by the censor at the request of +972 Magazine and the Movement for Freedom of Information in Israel. This marks the third year in a row that there has been a decline in the military censor’s activity, which is now at an 11-year low (the entire period for which we have data).

All media outlets in Israel, as well as authors and publishers, are required to submit articles relating to security and foreign relations to the IDF chief military censor for review prior to publication, in line with the “emergency regulations” enacted following Israel’s founding, and which remain in place. These regulations allow the censor to fully or partially redact articles submitted to it, as well as those already published without its review. Media outlets are barred from indicating in any way whether the censor has altered a story.

The decline in the censor’s work is a small consolation when considering that it regularly interferes in the news we read without our knowledge.

Israeli Squatter-Settlers are Expanding Colonies in Palestinian West Bank in Advance of Biden’s Visit and another Election

Anti- Semitism or Anti- Israel. They are no longer the same. It’s no longer 1967 but 2022 and Jews are turning against Israel.

The settlers are well aware that political parties will be keen to win their votes, and won’t be interested in disputes over the construction of new settlements. That’s why work is already underway to identify new sites and possibilities for new settlements and “facts on the ground” at the expense of the Palestinians and their land.

Apartheid: How a Reluctant UN Official Was convinced to so Describe Israeli Policies toward Palestinians

“We are now in the sixtieth year of the Nakba. There are those who dance now on our graves, and they consider us their feast. But the Nakba is not a memory; it is a continuous uprooting that makes Palestinians more worried about their existence. The Nakba continues because the occupation continues. Continuing occupation means the continuation of the war. This permanent war waged by Israel against us is not a war to defend its existence; it is a war over our existence. The conflict is not, therefore, a conflict between two existences, as the Israeli discourse promotes . . . You are here, dear friends, to see the facts for how they are. Yesterday we celebrated together the end of apartheid in South Africa. And here you see it thriving . . . in all of its power.”

The Israeli left has broken the Nakba taboo. Will the right of return be next?

“We’re in a very deep political crisis that has been building up for more than 20 years, since the collapse of Oslo,” says Beitarie. “There is a search for answers and solutions, part of which means looking at the roots of the so-called conflict. And once you start looking for answers, the Nakba is everywhere.”

Intel Report Warned Abraham Accords Would Fuel Violence

“The main downside of Biden pushing Saudi-Israeli normalization is mistaking that for doing something useful,” said Marc Lynch, a professor of political science and international affairs at George Washington University. “The downsides really lie in further enabling Israel to ignore the Palestinian issue, which most Arabs really do still care about and which is likely to erupt in repeated crises as long as it goes unsolved. It actually makes such eruptions more likely because it emboldens Israel to push faster and harder in its appropriation of land and homes in the West Bank.”

Palestinians ‘Are Bound to Win’: Why Israelis Are Prophesying the End of Their State | The Smirking Chimp

The latest predictions about Israel’s uncertain future are based on a different logic. Since Israel has always defined itself as a Jewish State, its future is mostly linked to its ability to maintain a Jewish majority in historic Palestine. By the admission of Morris and others, this pipe dream is now crumbling as the ‘demographic war’ is clearly and quickly being lost.

Israel’s Crisis in Parliament is a Crisis for its Apartheid in the Palestinian West Bank

A Coalition of Disagreement about the West Bank’s Apartheid Rule. Israel relies on the fact that the holocaust will never be forgotten but their involvement in acts of State-sponsored genocide like that committed under their supervision at the Shatila refugee camp in Lebanon 1983 will.

The “Judea and Samaria Emergency Regulations, Governance and Legal Aid Act,” passed soon after the Israeli military occupation of the Palestinian Territories in 1967, put Israelis who squatted on Palestinian land under Israeli law but put the Palestinians under military rule.

Why does the world allow Israel to continue its oppression of Palestinians?

Israeli Jews protest with Palestinians standing in front of them, knowing that if they didn’t they would get shot. Israel claims to be a Liberal Democracy but it shoots journalists and jails those that strive for truth and justice. In 2022 the world can rely on the fact that Israel is not what it presents itself to be and certainly not what it once was when the world supported it during the the 6 Day War in 1967. Israel isn’t even a shadow of what it once was.

Thirty-one-year-old Ghofran Warasnah was shot dead by the Israeli occupation forces located at the entrance of Al-Arroub Palestinian refugee camp near Hebron. Ghofran was a Palestinian journalist who was heading to work. According to reports paramedics were barred from reaching her for 20 minutes and the ambulance carrying her dead body was attacked by Israeli forces. This brings to mind the murder of Shireen Abu Akleh.

Israel’s assaults on public health infrastructure amount to war crimes | The Electronic Intifada

A young girl is treated on a hospital bed

They shoot Palestinians, journalists bomb hospitals ensuring those they shoot have no chance of medical care, and then declare they are “defending themselves”. The world is shocked by Putin’s attack on Ukraine but say nothing about what Israel has been doing for decades and calls normal.

In May 2021, the Israeli military dropped hundreds of bombs on the Gaza Strip, destroying houses, schools, businesses, and health care facilities.

Perhaps nowhere was the human toll of that month more apparent than at al-Shifa hospital, the “only hospital in Gaza equipped for emergency assistance.”

Practically speaking, Israelis can only be settled on Palestinian land by stealing that land from its Palestinian owners. Various legal fictions are used, including the exercise of eminent domain by the Israeli state, though that state is prohibited by international law from usurping Palestinian property. The Palestinians have suffered billions of dollars in losses as a result of Israeli expropriation.

International Silence over Israel’s media Repression is also an Attack on the Palestinian Narratives

While there is still much focus on the extrajudicial killing of Palestinian-American journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh, calls for justice will remain resonant, at least presently. However, Israel has perfected its tactics of denial and impunity. The international community has not gone beyond its usual statements and Israel has already got away with the assault on Abu Akleh’s funeral at the time, despite the repugnance it evoked. US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken’s glossing over Israeli violence by reframing it as an intrusion is ample proof of what Israel expects and what it receives.

Regardless of what violation Israel commits and on what scale, there is always a corresponding value of impunity which the settler colonial enterprise establishes and the international community approves of.

How media reports of ‘Clashes’ mislead Americans about Israeli-Palestinian Violence

U.S. journalists themselves are also working to change how outlets cover Israeli violence. Last year several of them – including reporters from The Boston Globe, the Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post and ABC News – issued an open letter calling on fellow journalists “to tell the full, contextualized truth without fear or favor, to recognize that obfuscating Israel’s oppression of Palestinians fails this industry’s own objectivity standards.” So far, over 500 journalists have signed on.

Accurate language in the reporting of Israeli-Palestinian violence is not only a concern for journalists’ credibility – it would also provide U.S. news consumers with a deeper understanding of the conditions on the ground and the deadly consequences. The Conversation

Shireen Abu Akleh Exemplified Speaking Truth to Power

The assassination of Abu Akleh places an onerous responsibility on the shoulders of journalists armed with their pens and cameras to not flinch in the face of brutal suppression.

Her untimely death has allowed the world to witness a colonial settler regime that, to date, has escaped consequences for its gross violations and abuses of fundamental human rights.

Unless this changes, expect Israel’s illegal occupation and war crimes to continue unabated. The agency of change possessed by media activists must thus be utilised to the optimum.

Shireen Abu Akleh: A Quarter of a Century of Coverage ended with an Israeli Bullet to the Head

She carried her belongings and went with the Press team into the field to begin the news coverage. She was ready to deliver her visual news report, as she had done for the past 25 years, but her last report made her the topic of the coverage, which was both shocking and bloody. The Israeli occupation army targeted her with a live bullet to the head during Press coverage from Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank and she fell to the ground, while her colleague, Press Producer, Ali Al-Samoudi, was wounded. Her colleagues rushed her in a car in a desperate attempt to rescue her, while the features of her exploded head changed, according to shocking clips documenting the incident. These were the last clips of Shireen Abu Akleh, who is renowned, as she is the Palestinian journalist who has always been present on Al-Jazeera TV and known by generations in every Arab home, present during the daily incidents and major events.

Israeli Snipers Murder Prominent American Journalist in Cold Blood, attempt to Kill her Camera Crew, as US Press Equivocates

Shireen Abu Akleh, reporting in Jerusalem for Al Jazeera, was one of the best known Palestinian journalists.

Why are we supporting this?

Israeli snipers murdered prominent American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh on Wednesday in an attempt to prevent the veteran Al Jazeera correspondent and her camera crew from filming an Israeli military attack on the Jenin refugee camp in the Occupied Palestinian West Bank. The Israeli army has killed 50 Palestinian journalists in the past two decades. During the Great March of Return protests in Gaza, Israeli snipers routinely shot unarmed protesters, as well as journalists and medics. In 2018 alone they killed 180 and wounded 6,000 innocent civilian protesters.

US Double Standard: Russia Sanctioned for Ukraine Occupation, but 4,000 new Israeli invaders of Palestinian West Bank merely “Opposed”

If the US were genuinely interested in some sort of political solution to the Israeli Apartheid practices regarding the Palestinians, nothing would be easier than to just step aside and let the world punish the Bennett government for these policies, which amount to war crimes. Washington wouldn’t even have to be proactive itself. Or Israeli officials could start being targeted for economic sanctions by the Treasury Department the way Russian high officials are being fingered. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett made $200 million with software and would feel the pain if he were sanctioned. But official Washington is so in the tank for Israeli Apartheid that making such a suggestion sounds outlandish.

In contrast, Washington is attempting to reshape the entire world so as to get Putin back out of Ukraine, and we see exactly what it looks like when an illegal Occupation is genuinely unacceptable to the White House.

Who enjoys freedom of worship in Israel?

Images of at least one Israeli drone dropping tear gas on Muslim worshippers at Al-Aqsa Mosque during the holy month of Ramadan marked a new phase in the occupation’s aggression against Palestinian land and people . . .

In another troubling scene, Palestinian Christians were not allowed into their church in Jerusalem by the Israeli occupation police, while foreigners were welcomed in. The Israeli occupation’s police lined people up into two lines, one for foreigners and the other for Palestinians and all those who speak Arabic. The latter, police mandated, were not allowed into the church.

E. Orthodox Christians in Jerusalem accuse Israel of Violating Freedom of Worship over Easter Holy Fire Ceremony

This year the Israeli state placed severe restrictions on how many Christians could attend, and on Saturday they set up metal barriers to enforce those limits, of only 4,000 attendees. Israeli government officials said they were afraid of a stampede. The Eastern Orthodox authorities in Jerusalem dismissed this fear as a pretext, pointing out that the ceremony had been held annually without incident. Controlling the some 370,000 Palestinians of East Jerusalem has become an obsession of the Israeli security forces, as the state and Israeli civil society make a press to implant Jewish squatters on Palestinian property there and to exercise increased control over civic and religious life.

How Israel uses Judaism as a settler-colonial weapon | The Electronic Intifada

At its heart the situation in Palestine is not a religious conflict, but rather a struggle by the indigenous Palestinians to survive and resist the settler-colonial takeover of their land by Zionism, a violent colonial movement founded in Europe. Zionism and the settler-colonial state it created have always been ready to weaponize Judaism as a pretext to conquer the land of the Palestinians.

Ukraine-Russia war: Israel’s defence minister Benny Gantz rejects criticism for not condemning Russia

Benny Gantz, Israel’s defence minister.

Rest assured if it meant “a sale” of arms to Ukraine rather than “a donation” Israel would have little or no concern. Its record of who it sells arms to is highly tainted and questionable, as is its sale of spyware which it even uses on its allies. The question for us, however, is why doesn’t our government comment on a country that, like Russia, invades and occupies territories illegally?

We seem to prefer dealing with and supporting these, do whatever you want, regimes like Russia.  Maybe indirectly by dealing and trading with their friends like Israel and India while banging our drum about how opposed we are. Like sending coal to Ukraine what was that about when Dutton can’t logistically get it there for months and its readily available from Poland? Shouldn’t our main stream media take a more investigative approach to what seems such two-faced posturing on the part of our government?

But it has refrained from joining in Western sanctions on the regime, nor offered arms to Ukraine’s government, in line with the miliary aid offered by its allies the United States, Britain and Australia. Speaking to The Washington Institute for Near East Policy think tank on Tuesday AEDT, Gantz said of criticism of Israel’s position: “I hear it, I don’t accept it.” “We are a small country with lots of regional considerations that we need to take into consideration,” he said.

Collective punishment shouldn’t be normal – +972 Magazine

Israeli undercover police officers arrest a man outside Damascus Gate in Jerusalem's Old City during the holy Muslim month of Ramadan, April 3, 2022. (Olivier Fitoussi/Flash90)

Israel’s application of ‘Collective Punishment’ is currently being taken to the extreme by Putin in Ukraine when the orders like “Slay all of them” are given. In the case of Putin, he no longer cares about any negative fallout in the Trumpian world of “fake news” because  news is today it seems whatever you say it is and who controls the technology to spread it.

Israel’s response to a series of deadly attacks in Be’er Sheva, Hadera, and Bnei Brak over the past two weeks was as predictable as it was malicious. So far, the authorities seem to believe that the four Palestinian assailants — three citizens of Israel and one West Bank resident — acted of their own accord and without organizational backing, despite the first three identifying with the Islamic State. That didn’t stop the authorities from reacting in their usual habit. Over the ensuing days, the police ramped up patrols of Arab towns in Israel; carried out stop-and-frisks of Palestinian citizens in Jewish neighborhoods and public spaces; and clamped down on Palestinians working in Israel without permits. Several municipalities ordered construction companies to freeze their employment of Palestinian laborers, while some Israeli schools told Arab maintenance staff to work only after students had gone home. Along with raids in the West Bank, soldiers blocked Palestinian workers from entering Israel through open parts of the separation barrier, which for years had been left unperturbed with the army’s quiet consent.

This proclivity for collective punishment forms a bedrock of Israeli policy toward Palestinians.

It was the second attack in Israel linked to the Islamic State group in less than a week, after four people were killed in a stabbing and car-ramming attack last Tuesday in Be’er Sheva. The photos and videos released last night by the police show that the two perpetrators arrived at the scene in Hadera with an enormous amount of firearms and weapons. After the incident, which ended when undercover Border Police officers killed the two attackers during a shootout, Israeli military commentator Yoav Limor wrote in the right-wing Israel Hayom daily that the attackers had “slipped under the Shin Bet’s radar.”

How the most Powerful Israel Lobby started Preferring anti-Democratic White Christian Nationalism to American Jews

The American-Israel Public Affairs Committee or AIPAC, the major coordinator of thousands of organizations making up the Israel lobbies, can no longer call itself “non-partisan.” That they would openly endorse 37 Republican Members of Congress who voted to overturn the 2020 Election quashes any notion of non-partisan standing. Previously, their mutual, self-aggrandizing endorsements of Donald Trump and former Israeli PM Benjamin (Bibi) Netanyahu sealed the alliance of Israel’s far-far right with their American counterparts.

Palestinian Refugee Families expelled from Israel can’t Come Home, but 100K Ukrainians Admitted

The majority of the World’s Jews shun the call of a return to Israel

The Jewish Agency’s acting chairman Yaakov Hagoel called the Ukrainian Jews’ arrival: “An important contribution to the development of the State of Israel, which today welcomes you with open arms and brotherly love.” A political admission that is completely void of the humanitarian veneer that fails to shroud Israel’s colonising intent. This means that Jewish Ukrainian refugees choosing Israel must be acknowledged as settlers – active participants in the Zionist colonial project with rights that exceed those of the Palestinians living under colonial apartheid. Meanwhile, the international community keeps silent about decades of hypocrisy over the Palestinian right of return – purposely inherently flawed to prevent Palestinians from ever claiming their place in historical Palestine.

Gigi Hadid’s Palestine Pledge and ‘Anti-Palestinianism’: The Great Vogue Controversy

When Influencers are politically and economically influenced like Vogue  they set their standards extremely low.  The Murdoch business model is proof.

The Arab News reports that Vogue did an instagram posting about model Gigi Hadid’s pledge to donate her fall earnings to Ukraine and Palestine, but erased the Palestine part. The erasure attracted widespread condemnation from progressives, and Vogue has now amended its Instagram posting to restore the model’s pledge to help Palestinians, as well. Vogue’s erasure of Palestinians from its Instagram notice has been seen as part of a pattern in which Palestine as a subject has been made taboo by pro-Israeli right wing nationalists, who deny Palestinian rights to peoplehood and statehood just as Vladimir Putin denies Ukrainians rights to peoplehood and statehood. The Israeli Right insists that all Palestinian territory actually belongs to Israel and that Palestinians can never be allowed to have their own state.

Putin called America’s hypocritical support of Israel’s illegal occupation CONTEMPT of International Law. He, Trump and Israel are all hypocrites.

In 2019, the Trump administration made the United States the only foreign country to recognize Israel’s annexation of the Golan Heights, which Israel seized from Syria in the 1967 War. Tel Aviv University Law Professor Eliav Lieblich noted that the decision – which contradicted a unanimous United Nations Security Council resolution supported by the US itself – constituted a “significant departure from the bedrock legal prohibition of unilateral annexation.” Yale Law School’s Oona Hathaway called the move “outrageous and potentially destabilizing to the postwar international order.” The Russian government called it an “indication of the contempt that Washington shows for the norms of international law.”

Russia’s Leverage over Israel in the Ukraine Crisis

Although the U.S. gives Israel billions every year, Tel Aviv either declines to or has been unable to offer the U.S. very much in return. Article continues after bonus IC video WION: “Israel PM Bennett holds talks with Russian President Putin & Ukraine President Zelensky amid crisis” Only after vigorous US lobbying did Israel even decide to vote against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine at the UN General Assembly. The US also convinced Israel to lobby the United Arab Emirates, which has extensive business ties to Russia, to vote against Moscow, as well. It is possible that the far-right Bennett also is wary of the precedent of boycotting aggressor states who invade and occupy their neighbors, since most of the world views Israel’s seizure and occupation of the Palestinian Territories in 1967 in the same light that they view Putin in Ukraine. Anyway, a vote at the UN General Assembly is pretty toothless.

The Antisemitic Face of Israel’s Evangelical Allies

When Israel cosies up to its enemies and calls them friends

Evangelical Zionists want Jews to move to Palestine to set the stage for the divine requital of Armageddon. This hasn’t stopped Israel from sealing alliances with even nakedly antisemitic evangelicals, so long as they support the dispossession of Palestinians.

Amnesty says Israel is an apartheid state. Many Israeli politicians agree | Chris McGreal | The Guardian

Israeli forces intervene during a protest against construction of Jewish settlements in Kafr Qaddum.

Who speaks for Israel? Rightwing lobby groups in Washington and US politicians would have Americans believe that it is them – and not Israel’s own former prime ministers and others who actually live in the Jewish state. Earlier this week Amnesty International released a report making a 280-page case that Israel’s treatment of Palestinians constitutes apartheid. The response in the US was a wave of orchestrated outrage – outrage that not only denies what many prominent Israelis say is true but, in effect, denies their right to say it.
