Tucker Carlson and the rest of Fox News are attacking Gen. Mark Milley for opposing racism | Media Matters for America

screen grab

On Thursday night, Fox News prime-time host and leading network voice Tucker Carlson delivered a tirade against Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley, following the general’s comments to the House Armed Services Committee on Wednesday on the importance of understanding the historical and ongoing issues of racism in America, as well as the “white rage” that led to the January 6 attack on the Capitol by supporters of former President Donald Trump. “Mark Milley is the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He didn’t get that job because he’s brilliant or because he’s brave or because the people who know him respect him. He is not, and they definitely don’t,” Carlson said, going on to describe Milley as “obsequious,” a “pig,” and “stupid.”

In an effort to outdo Tucker Carlson

Fox News’ Sean Hannity has been on a rage-filled jag of late (more than usual) about the New York Times, and Tuesday evening he hit the jackpot of Crazytown. Hannity did a sort of conservative stand-up comedy routine last night, which on one hand sounded like he was correctly criticizing himself and Fox News as lying liars.

Tucker Carlson has full control over Fox and its stranglehold on the Republican Party | Media Matters for America

Tucker Carlson flanked by two Republican Party logos

So what does it mean that the most influential voice in Republican politics trafficks in white nationalism, conspiracy theories, and outright falsehoods while at the same time wielding the power to shape public and legislative opinion? The GOP now largely has to deal with issues on Fox’s terms, and Carlson’s bad-faith hysterics over critical race theory, transgender people, the coronavirus pandemic, Black Lives Matter, anti-fascism, immigration, and myriad other issues have created a climate in which legislative priorities do not match the tangible needs of the American people. Instead, conservative politics has been consumed by a feverish race to the far-right on issues that appear in Fox News’ prime time — with Tucker Carlson setting the agenda and enforcing the new party orthodoxy.

Fox News failed to disclose to their audience that nearly a dozen guests billed as parents panicked by what they misleadingly label critical race theory being taught to their young children in school are also professional Republican operatives, according to a newly released report. The liberal media watchdog organization Media Matters for America details how Fox News has repeatedly failed to mention that their guests, who included right-wing media personalities, GOP strategists and conservative think tank staffers, were far from apolitical despite billing them as your average outraged parent.

Right-wing media and Republican politicians have been railing against the teaching of critical race theory — a broad academic discipline that seeks to explore how the history of racism in America still has an effect on modern life and society — and attempting to depict this simple concept as an imminent threat to the country, and an insidious effort to “warp the minds of American children” and make them feel guilty for “being born white.”

Fox-News-Climate-Denial-Advertisers

On a near-daily basis, Fox News hosts, anchors, and guests spew misinformation and false narratives aimed at tanking efforts to address the climate crisis. These tactics to delay climate action or downplay the seriousness of our warming planet have often been referred to as the new climate denial — since the actual denial of the scientific consensus that climate change is happening has mostly been pushed to the fringes of both politics and the traditional media landscape.

Tucker Carlson Uses Unverified Vaccine Reporting System To Scare Viewers

Tucker Carlson once again proves he’s one of the most irresponsible people polluting our airwaves. As John noted here, Carlson hasn’t revealed his own vaccination status, but he sure is doing everything he can to make sure his viewers are scared to death of the coronavirus vaccines, and that we never get to herd immunity with all of the Republican, Fox-watching anti-vaxxers out there. Here he is on this Thursday’s show, using the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, or VAERS, which, as Matthew Chapman at Raw Story explained, “is not actually a database of vaccine injuries; it’s only a list of medical events reported as happening after a vaccine was administered, with no verification that the vaccine caused the event or even that the event was real.”

Our Divisions Are Worse Than You Think | Washington Monthly

Tucker Carlson on set.

Fox is obsessed with the “crisis” at the border and Black Lives Matter demonstrators. Never mind that BLM protests and other urban demonstrations over the past three years have been overwhelmingly peaceful, which is a little fact that Fox somehow fails to share. Analyzing over 7,000 protests between 2017 and 2020, researchers at Harvard University and the University of Connecticut found that 3.7 percent of the demonstrations—that is, fewer than 1 in 25—involved property damage or vandalism. Protesters or bystanders were injured in 1.6 percent of the protests, or less than 1 in 50. Yet Fox makes you think that the exceptions are the rule, by recycling video of demonstrators burning police cars and looting stores. Did that mayhem occur? Of course, and we should all condemn it. But it’s pure demagoguery to replay the same violent clips, when the vast majority of protests looked nothing like that. Similarly, Fox is rife with stories of undocumented immigrants from Latin America who commit crimes. And, yes, that happens as well. But immigration has declined overall, and not just because of Trump’s wall. According to the first results of the 2020 census, which were released on Monday,

Right-wing Lies like Biden’s Beef Ban and Kamala’s Book Spread Too Fast for Corrections to Counter | The Smirking Chimp

Never apologize is Murdoch’s Motto unless they want to take your licence away

Over the weekend, two sensational fake stories — a Fox Business Network segment about President Joe Biden’s supposed plans to impose strict beef rations on Americans and a New York Post news article claiming Vice President Kamala Harris’s book was being distributed to migrant children in shelters — spread rapidly through right wing social media after being injected into the bloodstream by outlets owned by Rupert Murdoch and his family. Both stories were eventually corrected — Fox on air, and the Post in two separate, corrected articles — after being debunked by fact-checkers. In both cases, however, it’s highly unlikely that corrections will ever penetrate the consciousness of the average person who shared straight-faced posts referencing these fake stories on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or the other social media sites. On the contrary, you’ll probably be hearing right wing relatives griping about Harris using her book to indoctrinate migrant children and “jokes” about Biden’s burgers for years to come.

Fox attacks any effort to act on the climate crisis

Coverage across Fox programming on and around Earth Day was rife with climate deniers pushing climate misformation and bad-faith arguments against efforts to decarbonize our economy and work collectively with world leaders to address the global climate crisis. The vast majority of coverage specifically focused on Biden’s summit — which involved 40 world leaders and aimed at discussing stronger climate action — was centered not on the need for climate action or good-faith critiques about how to achieve Biden’s ambitious goal to reduce U.S. carbon emissions by 50% by 2030. Instead, it focused on the well-worn myths that climate action will hurt the U.S. economy and its workers.

When Nazis marched in Charlottesville in 2017, they chanted “You will not replace us!” and, somewhat more clarifying, “Jews will not replace us!” The terrorist who gunned down 51 people in Christchurch, New Zealand, used this slogan (“The Great Replacement”) in his manifesto. Last night, Tucker Carlson appeared on a prime-time Fox News show to defend this theory, not only in substance but also by name.

“Replacement theory” imagines that an elite cabal, frequently described as Jewish, is plotting to “replace” the native white population with non-white immigrants, who will pollute and destroy the white Christian culture.

Fox News host Tucker Carlson has spent years telling his audience that white supremacists do not pose a serious threat to the public. Even as Americans motivated by racist ideologies committed acts of domestic terror — including the January 6 sacking of the U.S. Capitol — he was quick to scoff, arguing that Democrats and the press were exaggerating the threat for political gain. So after FBI Director Christopher Wray told Congress the exact opposite on Tuesday, Carlson was left with three choices — admit that he was wrong, lie about what happened, or ignore it. He chose the latter path, preferring to devote his show to issues he apparently considered more pressing, like the purported cancellation of Dr. Seuss.

Just eight percent of independents and four percent of Democrats most trust Fox News.
