With his Government in chaos over banning the burqa and a litany of other woes confronting him, unremittently unpopular Prime Minister Tony Abbott is in deep trouble, writes Bob Ellis.

SPEAKER BRONWYN BISHOP, who supported apartheid, may not back down on the burqa as quickly as Abbott wants.

Nor will she resign as readily as the nation might hope when her Leader asks her to.

She may take the view that she is accountable only to Parliament and hold her position, amid widening derision, until it sits.

This will bring into question all of Brandis’s ‘national security’ legislation — especially that part which imprisons for ten years journalists who, like Andrew Wilkie, reveal government stupidity.

Stupidity as stupid as this.

Is Abbott himself now in trouble? I think he is.

He is taking us into a war of which he allowed no parliamentary discussion.

He spoke of ‘Team Australia’ yet allowed a ‘sin bin’ as ludicrous as this, and he may not be able to cancel it until Parliament overthrows his defiant, unfair, tyrannous and, some would say, ratbag Speaker.

His competence, always in question (Costello predicted he would be a disaster), is now shown to be, well, further in question. He dare not move his ministry round, so low is his support in Cabinet.
And he can’t get his Budget through.

He may limp on till December 1, but then, when next Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews’ huge majority is known, he may have to consider his position — and Malcolm Turnbull his.

And so it will go.

Personally this man decided to put himself on the front page months ago by sounding off like the leader of the war pac-t. He wanted to be noticed for other than his home-grown stupidity. It worked he is noticed for his International stupidity. However this man has a history of stupidity and viciousness since a student he’s left a trail of blood behind. Number 39 was the decision to follow the US into Iraq in yet another attempt to meet violence with violence — and, incidentally, boost the popularity of warmongering ‘leaders’.

Number 38 was the deal with Cambodia to ‘sell’ some of the world’s most desperate refugees to one of the world’s poorest countries.

France’s prestigious Le Monde headed its report:

‘L’Australie souhaite 1000 réfugiés vendre au Cambodge’ [Australia wants to ‘sell’ 1,000 refugees to Cambodia]

CNN in the US:

‘Australian deal to settle refugees in Cambodia slammed as new low’

In the UK:

‘Cambodians protest Australia using country as refugee dumping ground’

In Indonesia:

‘Activists outraged over Cambodia-Australia refugee deal’

Number 37 was Australia’s appallingly cruel treatment of refugees.

France’s Le Monde ran a story titled,

‘En Australie, une fillette de 6 ans contre l’enfer des camps de migrants’ [In Australia, a 6 year old girl protests the ‘hell’ of migrant camps]

It recounts the case of an incarcerated child suffering untreated toothache, allergies, bed-wetting, stuttering and other symptoms of depression due to separation from her mother.

The New York Times ran an outraged editorial:

‘Australia is pursuing draconian measures to deter people without visas from entering the country by boat. In doing so, it is failing in its obligation under international accords to protect refugees fleeing persecution.’

Number 36 was the Budget decision to slash overseas aid from the miserable level promised before the 2013 election – already a reduction of $4.5 billion – by a further $3.1 billion.

The UK’s Daily Mail quoted aid advocate and rock legend Sir Bob Geldof, saying he was dismayed Australia had reduced overseas direct aid (ODA) when it was one of the richest nations in the world.

Said Geldorf:

“The Australian government promised to increase ODA to 0.5 per cent [of GDP]. The Australian people gave their word to the poorest people on this planet. You can’t mess with a sovereign promise to the poor, they’re too weak, they’re too vulnerable. You can’t f*** around with them.”

MP Andrew Wilkie “I was shocked to see that John Howard is only embarrassed, almost embarrassed for himself. What he should be is deeply ashamed that he lied to the Australian public 11.5 years ago, and took us into an unnecessary war, a war that has killed countless Iraqis and other people, which effectively destroyed that country and created the conditions for the rise of not just the Islamic State but other groups,” Wilkie told reporters in Canberra.

“Look frankly I’m disappointed that the prosecutor at the international criminal court hasn’t thought to hold John Howard responsible for conspiracy to commit mass murder.”

Howard argued the 2003 invasion did not play a major role in the rise of Isis which now holds large swathes of Syria and northern Iraq.

Wilkie said Howard should have made a “compelling humanitarian” case for dealing with Saddam Hussein in 2003 and told the voters the invasion was about Australia’s bilateral relationship with America, not WMDs.

When asked again if he was suggesting Howard was partly responsible for the rise of Isis, Wilkie responded “I’m not suggesting it, I’m stating it as fact”.

“If we had not gone to war 11.5 years ago, and destroyed that country and created this security vacuum, then the circumstances would not exist for Islamic State to have emerged and to grown strong and to conquer the land that it does. So yes, they are responsible.”

Shouting ‘fire!’ in a crowded theatre is frowned upon in most societies and thought an example of a limit on freedom of speech we can all agree on. Tony Abbott did something far, far worse yesterday. He told an entire nation they could be randomly beheaded at any moment.

He then told us to calm down, and behave as if he hadn’t said it.

He added to the usual terrors female shift-workers endure on late night buses, late night trains and the long walk from a railway station home at 1.30 a.m. — the ultimate horror of having your head cut off.

He did it by adding the word ‘random’: by not even implying, but saying straight out that you didn’t have to be famous, or politically connected to a particular cause, or a prominent member of a particular faith. You could be an ‘innocent bystander’, beheaded.

He then said it was very easy to do. All one needs, he said, is a knife and cell-phone, and an accomplice with a car.

Is this responsible? Is it the act of a nation’s leader, or a cyberbully? It seems to encourage terrorists, implying they can’t be easily detected and it doesn’t matter who they kill.

Forty-six people ‒ Australian people ‒ died from cigarettes yesterday, none from decapitation.

Three or four motorists will die this weekend, in car accidents.

Before Christmas, two young men will die in pub brawls.

‘Domestic’ terrorism will occur — a father kidnapping and threatening his estranged wife or children once or twice this fiscal year.

I will bet a lot of money no-one will be beheaded here in Australia.

It is because it is not a very Australian thing to do. People who live here don’t do that sort of thing and thereby imperil their families, and the livelihood of their parents, brothers and sisters. It is a long way from the battlegrounds of Baghdad, Mosul, Gaza, Donetsk, where such ‘terrorist’ things do happen lately — incidents in war.

And this is why it hasn’t happened in ninety-nine years and nine months here, since the Battle of Broken Hill in January 1915. It is not a particularly Australian thing to do.

And frightening old women with it is, I think, unbecoming for a prime minister. And possibly illegal, as it ‘encourages the terrorists’.
If the Prime Minister were serious about it, the two big football games this weekend in Sydney would have been cancelled, along with the opening night of The King And I. If he were serious, there would be random body searches of Middle Eastern women entering the Sydney Art Gallery. Most art galleries, given ISIL’s hatred of art, would be closed for six months.

But he isn’t serious, he’s making mischief.

He’s lost most of the policy battles of his first year and he’s thought a joke by many people, by many others a disgrace, and he’s embarked on the biggest ‘scare campaign’ since the Yellow Peril.

He’s become what I call the Chicken-Little-in-Chief. And he shouldn’t, any more, be given the time of day.

And he should be asked to resign by his colleagues (as Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond was a few hours ago and has done), or by the Senate, or by a poll of public opinion.

He’s blown it. May the sky come falling down

Here in Australia ASIO,AFP,&Police will only apply this profile to young Muslims. On any Saturday night random acts of violence are carried out.  Threats of violence against the public, against women, against children and even property are the norm. Generally done by Christians during and after the religious ceremony of getting drunk or pissed as Muslims don’t drink. Bogans  run free around Australian cities and are left to sucker punch,abuse and threaten whoever they want.

Terrorist raids aren’t generally media events they are done in secret.  This raid is an advertising promotion  a politicized and event was and intended to be so. If not how  dumb are the directors of operations? So much press  and television crews were present it seemed far more like a reality show than any security operation. It’s  a celebration to show well the government is spending our money on expanded policing and the show is coming to your street soon. It reminds me of the Cedar Bay raid in 1976 in Qld on some hippies in a rain forrest. Demonstrate loudly on a university campus,March against the G20 or just yell  random abuse at anyone in authority and you will sitting in the back of a divvy van as a suspected terrorist. At least if you were Christian there would be some equality. Tony Abbott would dearly love to see the second coming of the Cronulla riots as it keeps all his other fuck ups off the front page. I might be charged with vilification of the government or a government officer but you can be sure Andrew Bolt and Alan Jones wont.

Australia is asking for Sunni support in Iraq if you donate any money collected for humanitarian reasons to be sent to any Sunni organization you will be deemed a terrorist even if these organizations are allies of the current Coalition of the Concerned. If you donate to  the Shiite Militias who have killed 60,000 Sunnis in the past 10 years on the Iraqi governments behalf you should be ok as they are goverment supported. Any wonder the sectarian war is so vicious.

I  have some faith that our justice system and that it will make a laughing-stock of todays craids and government supported actions. If they don’t then there wont be sufficient jails to hold people. Whatever this seems the most counter productive action imaginable and the most alienating approach possible targeting a minority Australian group. It’s the greatest recruitment drive for ISIL we have seen to date.

Police are carrying out counter-terrorism raids across Sydney and Brisbane.

More than 10 arrests have been made, police said.

NSW Police said the operation on Thursday morning also involved the Australian Federal Police.

In Sydney, officers have raided properties in Beecroft, Bellavista, Guildford, Merrylands, Northmead, Wentworthville, Marsfield, Westmead, Castle Hill, Revesby, Bass Hill and Regents Park.

Three search warrants were also carried out in Brisbane’s south – in Upper Mount Gravatt East, Logan, and Underwood.

Underwood is the same suburb in which police raided an Islamic bookstore last week.

Hundreds of police officers are believed to be involved in the operation.

Guildford resident Mark Anderson had just got up for work at 4.30am when he saw a helicopter circling the area and shining a light on Bursill Street.

He also heard police on a loudspeaker yelling at someone to come outside a home on Bursill Street.

“I heard them calling out to him to ‘Come out!’ for about 10 to 15 minutes. I don’t know if he was too agreeable. I didn’t really understand a name. It was pretty intense,” Mr Anderson said.

“It was a pretty big deal at our place. Early last night a helicopter hovered over here for a bit as well, then this morning it all kicked off.”

Mr Anderson said he attempted to drive to work just before 5am but found himself in the middle of the police cordon.

“I pulled out of my driveway and turned to go to the bowling club, and a black armoured truck was there,” he said.

“I realised I was a bit inside the cordon. A cop car was blocking Railway Terrace into Bursill Street, they had blocked off right to the roundabout. The helicopter was shining a light on a house near the bowling club.”

Despite the terror raids so close to his home, Mr Anderson said he was not concerned for his safety.

“I’m confident the cops know what they’re doing. I’d be surprised if I knew something before they did,” he said.

Bass Hill resident Chris said he was woken by a helicopter hovering over his home at 4am. He went outside to find up to 40 police officers swarming his street.

“I went out to be a stickybeak, as you do, and I was told quite promptly: ‘Go, go back inside, do not come out’,” he told Triple M.

“Looking around, they had blocked off the road. It was only six doors down. It was pretty surreal.”

Last week, Australia’s terror threat level was raised from medium to high, meaning a terror attack on home soil was now officially considered “likely”.

The nation’s outgoing spy chief ASIO Director General David Irvine said an attack could manifest itself in a “Bali-style attack, although Prime Minister Tony Abbott said on Friday that the agencies had not detected any “particular plots”.

Uthman Badar of Hizb ut-Tahrir Australia, which describes itself as a political party whose ideology is Islam, said in a statement: “The AFP and NSW Police this morning conducted heavy-handed dawn raids involving hundreds of police in Sydney’s north-west suburbs as well as in Brisbane.

“As late as last week both the Prime Minister and outgoing ASIO boss David Irvine confirmed that there was no intelligence of any plans to carry out attacks in Australia. A few days later and we wake up to heavy-handed raids and talk of a ‘terrorist network’ planning attacks.

“The timing of these raids is suspect indeed. With the ‘anti-terror’ laws, which hit a wall in the community, to be tabled to Parliament next week and with ‘military intervention’ imminent in Iraq, these raids are very timely for the government and its propaganda campaign for the same.”

We have government ministers lining up to tell us that Australia is ready to join the US in Iraq; a very broad statement that tells us nothing specific, but does succeed in mobilizing the minds of the ‘gung-ho’ brigade.”

It’s been year full of gaffes, embarrassment and a budget disaster the government needs a deflection to draw attention away from it’s failings and the rumblings in it’s ranks. What better than an illusion of a threat. How original how bright. Margret Thatcher always said if in crisis governments create a crisis to hide their crisis.

Abbott’s announcement came after ASIO Director General David Irvine’s  assisting Abbott to draw our attention elsewhere. While the media lapped it up for a second nothing more has been said why? Abbott is sabre rattling  a show  for us but big brother US of A isn’t racing to action. But Bolt and the Murdoch Press are on board trying to lift this leaner telling us how well he operates on this international level. Are we to believe our Tony is a major adviser to the all big players?

” If the government wanted to be truly effective in its efforts to protect us from any terrorist threat, would it not be more prudent to do it without a megaphone? After all, that is what they are doing with border security.”

Why are they making such a noise about combating terrorism? Ram ping up a perceived threat, as has been happening recently, is nothing more than a pathetic attempt to win back votes. It achieves no other purpose, except to alert possible terrorists to be more vigilant and to be on their game.

Our pivot of the pacific draws our attention to the Ukraine and the Middle East. Abbott believes he has a winner; with National Security. Will anybody raise  the fact that Abbott has just given up 40 years of goodwill created by the ABC within the Pacific Region  to China because of his  $230 mill cut to it’s budget. A cut promised not to be made.  China’s news broadcaster Xinhua  is in Fiji and this week has signed a contract to supply the regional news in English, French and Chinese to Vanuatu and it’s neighbours. That’s National Security that Tony Abbott or Andrew Bolt aren’t talking about.
