Our American democracy, even when we were happy with it and thought it was doing really well, it already had a whole series of undemocratic natures that no other healthy liberal democracy has.
Our electoral college, nobody has that. That was a compromise to rural states. We have the fact that our elections are run by partisan agents. No other healthy liberal democracy has that. Canada, this enormous country, has an independent electoral commission that runs all of the elections. Every ballot is the same no matter if you vote in Prince Edward Island or the Yukon. Or that we allow so much money to be injected into our system. Nobody else has this.
For years Trump threatened anyone ready to speak out against him with money or the courts. He was the most practised Don in the country with 4000 court cases to prove it. However, the Jan 6th Committee hasn’t been bought or a court it’s simply there to gather the facts for the American legal system to decide whether charges should be brought. However, Trump while President made every effort to swing that system his way. The question remains just how much and solid must the evidence be against Trump be for an indictment to be made?
Donald Trump famously joked that he was so popular with his fans that he could literally get away with murder.
“I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose any voters, he bragged while campaigning in Iowa back in 2016.
Never mind the voters. Here we are, 18 months after his presidency, staring at clear evidence that Trump led a criminal conspiracy to interfere with the 2020 election and the constitutional duties of Congress. He intentionally incited a violent mob that he knew was armed to mount an attempted coup on Capitol Hill.

I can’t speak for others, but I felt violated as I heard that jury verdict read yesterday in the Kyle Rittenhouse trial. It was justice gone off the rails. It was insane. A comparable argument might have been that a rapist who enters a home wearing a condom on his erect penis had no choice but to continue with the rape once he’d thrown back the blanket to find the victim sleeping in the nude. Oh, and she must never be referred to as a “victim” because her nudity has provoked the rape.
According to an Associated Press investigation, there were only 182 ballots, out of 3.4 million cast in Arizona, that had problems clear enough for legal review. Of those, only four led to charges, split evenly between two Democrats and two Republicans. Not a single vote was found to have been counted twice.
“After years of indefinite detention without charge or trial; a history of torture and cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment; and multiple attempts at a thoroughly failed and discredited military commission process, it is past time to close Guantánamo’s detention facility and end indefinite detention.”
Supporters of the QAnon conspiracy theory claimed that a video of President Donald Trump admitting his presidency is ending is actually a sign that he will stay in office. In reality, it’s more of a sign that the community is dedicated to its delusion of a Trump second term in office regardless of the facts.
Discredited right-wing video producer James O’Keefe and his organization Project Veritas have released a new video spreading voter fraud conspiracy theories by targeting some of the most vulnerable Americans and their right to vote.
The two-minute video from January 4 fearmongers about homelessness advocacy groups in Georgia allowing unhoused people to use the groups’ mailing addresses for voter registration in the lead-up to Tuesday’s Senate runoff election in the state. O’Keefe’s group is known for infiltrating progressive organizations and campaigns and secretly recording people connected to them, then heavily editing the footage to suggest wrongdoing.
Pence is a serial science denier. He says smoking cigarettes does not cause cancer. He has called the human-caused climate emergency “a myth.” The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine involves science and Muslim immigrants, so why is he getting it?
I believe these are essential tasks for journalists in the coming years. I call on existing newsrooms and philanthropically-supported initiatives to field an army of reporters — God knows, enough of them are unemployed right now — and send them out to communities all over the country, to help us figure out what is happening to America.
leaked audio of Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp—currently under fire for spearheading voter suppression efforts as he also runs for governor of the state—saying that the get-out-the-vote operation of his Democratic challenger “continues to concern us, especially if everybody uses and exercises their right to vote.”
In the 21-minute recording of Kemp’s remarks at a closed-door campaign event in Atlanta on Friday, obtained by Rolling Stone, he expressed concerns about Stacey Abrams’s voter turnout mobilization, which has ramped up in response to Kemp suspending more than 53,000 voting registrations—mostly of black voters—and purging 107,000 more from the rolls.
For the past decade, the United States has been quietly assisting opposition groups in Nicaragua, helping them organize resistance to the country’s popular leftist president Daniel Ortega.
U.S. officials hope the country’s opposition groups will create a new political movement that can defeat Ortega at the polls or pressure him into stepping down from power. They fear that without their support, Ortega’s opposition will remain weak and divided, making it impossible for anyone to mount a successful political campaign against the Nicaraguan president.
