Nine Entertainment Chairman Peter Costello is overseeing an organised attempt by management at Nine to cover-up the alleged sexual assaults of numerous female journalists at Channel 9 by former News boss Darren Wick.
On the 15th of March 2024 the SMH reported that Darren Wick had resigned but it turns out Wick was given a $1 million handshake to get lost after a sexual assault complaint.
The alleged sexual assaults were first reported on Monday (20/5/24) last week by News Corp websites and papers.
On one side, a small Australian media player. On the other, the world’s most powerful media moguls from Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation. Independent news outlet Crikey has just taken its fight with Lachlan Murdoch public, writes Mark Sawyer.
Before journalists can repair their broken institution, they first need to admit they have a problem.
But while journalists behave like they are untouchable and beyond critique, Australian news media standards will continue to degrade, and audience trust will decline.
When journalists are criticised, whether it be instances of bias, misrepresentation, factual errors or terrible ethics on display, we see a familiar pattern. First, they complain of “trolling” and “abuse” from whoever it is who points out their flaws. Then their colleagues jump in to defend them and join in the chorus of criticism against those who complain. Rinse, repeat.
This collective circling of the wagons and in-group defensiveness creates an impenetrable culture that refuses to self-reflect or confront problems from within. Like a snake eating itself, this downward spiral is unsustainable.
But these kinds of tactics from conservatives shouldn’t be understood as arguments. Instead, it’s all just flat-out trolling. None of these “arguments” are offered in good faith. The point is, as Steve Bannon once famously said, “to flood the zone with shit,” which is to say to derail efforts to inform and engage the public by pumping out so many dumb arguments, trolling tactics, and other distractions that few people can pay attention to what really matters.
Even as Fox continues to attract significantly more viewers than Newsmax overall, its rival’s growth is bad news for the network. Since the election, CNN has pulled ahead of Fox in the cable news ratings for the first time in decades – a reflection of the splintering of the conservative audience and unhappiness with the election outcome among Trump supporters.
Trump accordingly puts out his erratically changing messages through free-kick interviews on Fox News, essentially a propaganda outlet where whatever he says, true or blatantly false, is accepted. When in contact with other news media – professional journalists instead of professional propagandists – he tries to discredit them, insulting the reporters, squabbling, claiming incredibly they are liars.
Chinese Media is a threat but Murdochian Media isn’t a threat to Democracy. How does that work when Chinese media is paid for and broadcast on Foxtel and News Corp core effort in Australia is to shut down the ABC? (ODT)
In September 2018, billboards adorned with kangaroos and pandas began popping up around Australia’s capital cities as part of a $500 million advertising campaign urging viewers to “see the difference” on China’s Central Global Television Network (CGTN) — available on Foxtel and Fetch TV.
SHARRI MARKSON is the national political editor for the Daily Telegraph.
She has won the prestigious 2018 Kennedy Prize for Journalist of the Year for her “scoop” in exposing Barnaby Joyce, in February this year, as the man who had impregnated his former staffer, Vikki Campion.
The only problem is that Markson was not the first person to reveal this truth.
As Bruce Haigh wrote in Independent Australia in August:
The problem is that she did not break the story of Barnaby Joyce’s affair or [the] pregnancy. Credit for revealing the affair goes to Serkan Ozturk, the editor of True Crime News Weekly on 24 October 2017. News of Joyce’s staffer’s pregnancy was broken three weeks later in Independent Australia, in a story by Sydney bureau chief Ross Jones on 19 November 2017.
As President Donald Trump’s administration implemented a new “zero tolerance” prosecution policy at the border that led to unprecedented and systematic separation of immigrant families and locking kids in cages, right-wing media flailed around trying to blame the administration’s policy on anybody or anything except Trump.
The president’s media enablers blamed Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush, “the law on the book,” Democrats in Congress, the media, the families themselves, and even “the Illuminati of K Street” for the Trump administration’s policy
If you live in a midsize city or battleground state, you are now more likely than ever to see pro-Trump propaganda and conservative spin on your local news — just in time for the 2018 election season — thanks to conservative media giant Sinclair Broadcast Group.
Media Matters has identified communities that will see competitive congressional midterm races and that have Sinclair-owned or -operated news stations. Many Sinclair stations are already airing national news programming with a conservative slant, and they will be ramping up coverage of their local races.
We’ve already tackled Nevada and Tennessee. Now, we’re taking a look at New York.
News Corp reported the Gold Logie winner was “a bit over The Project” and now had his eyes on a return to the national broadcaster, where he worked before joining Ten’s news and entertainment show in 2015.
In a different era, when decency was the norm, the members of the U.S. House of Representatives would not seat a thug like Gianforte in the chamber. In the age of Trump, it’s okay to beat up a reporter.
