Oh dear – our new PM is not up to the job – » The Australian Independent Media Network

BACK TO THE FUTURE  OCTOBER 2018

We know Scott Morrison has held several portfolios, immigration and treasurer the most important. The electorate might have hoped that these experiences would have endowed him with a modicum of general knowledge about how government works, some feel for how international diplomacy is carried out, some notion of what to say, to whom, and when. But, after just a few short weeks, we are left disillusioned. Our accidental PM seems to have learned almost nothing of these crucial political skills – every day he shows he’s not up to the job.

Did you hear the LNP telling us that China was building a military base in Vanuatu? Or was that Norfolk Island?

Oh wait, that was 2018 when the headline read China eyes Vanuatu military base in plan with global ramifications.

Despite racking up huge debts and a structural deficit that will continue for years, the Coalition are still laying claim to being better economic managers, a claim that is debunked by Alan Austin in his article Worst debt blow-out in the developed world refutes Coalition claims of economic competence Having lost the battle to stop marriage equality, persecution of the rainbow community has moved to expelling gay students and stopping trans kids from playing sport. Different target, same bigotry. Oh, and death taxes….again. You have to wonder what the point is of this travelling circus since we’ve seen and heard it all before.

Sinclair had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad year and it has only itself to blame

It appears Trump isn’t as good for business as they’d hoped but they can’t admit it (ODT)

Sinclair Broadcast Group began 2018 hoping to finalize a massive deal that would cement its place as the country’s largest owner and operator of local TV stations, after having more or less weathered a few bad news cycles about its obvious conservative bent. But the local TV news giant is ending the year with arguably higher negative name recognition than ever before and with its proposed acquisition of 42 more stations rejected. In fact, one of its most formidable competitors is now aiming to knock Sinclair out of that top spot. And Sinclair has only itself to blame.

One thing about Sinclair’s immediate future seems particularly certain, though: It’s going to keep up its harmful tactics. There will be more offensive “must-run” segments, and probably more brain-washy promotions in the spring, and definitely more blatant agenda-pushing with the Trump administration. The company has shown little desire to change behavior or admit when it’s done something morally objectionable so far. Why would it start now?

Biggest Stories of 2018: Israel announced Apartheid, Shot Thousands of Civilians

2018 was in many ways a turning point for the position of Israel in the system of Western, liberal, capitalist democracies. It had long sat uneasily among France, Britain, and the United States, inasmuch as it was founded on a formal racial supremacist principle that Jews must rule the state. Racism is important in the other democracies, as well, but it is not typically enshrined in the constitution. The French Rights of Man mentioned nothing about race.

2018 was the year Israel finally went completely rogue and ensured that it can no longer be considered to be in the club of liberal capitalist democracies. It is now formally an Apartheid state even inside the Green Line. It is also the year when the Israeli elite consciously decided to shoot down with live ammunition unarmed, peaceful demonstrators in the thousands. These authoritarian policing methods most resemble those of fascist states of the interwar period.

“It’s Quite Scary”- Climate Scientists Alarmed as Europe Melts in Record Heat

Stockholm (AFP) – Researchers expressed concern Thursday about the rapid pace of climate change, after a glacier on Sweden’s Kebnekaise mountain melted so much in sweltering Arctic temperatures that it is no longer the country’s highest point.

“It’s quite scary,” Gunhild Ninis Rosqvist, a Stockholm University geography professor who has been measuring the glacier for many years as part of climate change research, told AFP.

Parliament faces a new year but it’s still the same old circus

Yes, the conservative “carnies” are starting the year on an upbeat note. A far cry from last time when they strapped ringmaster Turnbull to the “Wheel of Death”, where a conga line of human cannonballs took turns firing themselves at him as he spun, faster and faster to the right.

Trump Asks ‘Why Are We Letting People From Shithole Countries Come Here?’ | Crooks and Liars

It took nearly a year, but finally Trump’s racism oozed out all over the White House today during a discussion on immigration.

According to a Washington Post report, Trump went off during a discussion on immigration reform and the DREAM act compromise reportedly agreed to by lawmakers, asking “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?”

Trump was specifically referring to immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and Africa as lawmakers proposed restoring protections for immigrants from those countries.

with profits flowing, and political clout solidifying, the arms industry will begin 2018 happier than ever. President Obama was a good friend to them, approving more than double the value of arms sales reached by George W. Bush. Trump, it seems, will be even better.
