Opinion | For Mainstream Media, the Extreme Gore in Gaza Isn’t ‘Brutal’ | Common Dreams

A parody of The New York Times is called "The New York War Crimes"

But with military campaigns waged by the U.S. and its allies, media’s humanitarian concerns tend to fade. The uneven deployment of “brutal” seems like a clear case of Western media not just shielding a U.S. ally from justifiable criticism, but actively inciting public hatreds of Palestinians by portraying their violence as exceptionally inhumane despite paling in comparison to that of their colonial oppressor.

Palestinian Photojournalists Document Gaza’s Carnage

24 October 2023, Khan Younis, south of the Gaza Strip. “It took a long time for people to search the rubble. To remove the injured and dead bodies of adults and children alike. You think about your own children, aware that this may also happen to them. You cry, you choke. It’s very hard. No one is without pain in the Gaza strip. Whether you have lost children, family, friends, neighbours… Whether they are wounded or killed. The suffering is everywhere.”

Why They Hate Us: Anti-Zionism in the Jewish Community – CounterPunch.org

As we go forward, it is worthwhile to recall a truism about struggle often attributed to Mahatma Gandhi: First they ignore you; then they laugh at you; then they fight you; then you win. We have reached Stage 3. They are fighting us. As unpleasant as it is, remember this: The vehemence of the vituperation aimed at us is directly related to how close we are to winning.

Ultimately Netanyahu is likely to be stymied by one factor which operates in both countries but which he is unable to control: domestic public opinion. In the West, including the United States, it has turned decisively against Israel, even if the spat with Iran becomes a temporary distraction.

Dmocrats “we remain concerned by the stark differences and gaps in the statements being made by the State Department and White House on how Israel has not been found to be in violation of international humanitarian law, either when it comes to the conduct of the war or when it comes to the provision of humanitarian assistance, which are contradictory to those made by prominent experts and global institutions.”

As global challenges increase, embassies and their representatives become more important, not less so.

If the takeaway from the two latest embassy incidents is that the protection of diplomatic premises can be secondary to whatever is politically expedient on any given day, then it will be of great detriment to the management of international relations. Diplomacy will become much more difficult

Six months after October 7, a lament for the paths not chosen

Destroyed houses from the October 7 massacre in Kibbutz Kfar Aza, southern Israel, April 7, 2024. (Chaim Goldberg/Flash90)

The right thing for Israel to do now is to end this terrible war — in Gaza, and with Iran. We must reach an agreement to return the hostages who are still alive, bury our dead, allow the Gazans to bury their dead, and start thinking about new directions in order to ensure the security of all the region’s residents. That would require Israel’s government to do something that almost no Israeli government has done for decades: put our safety above the settlements and the desire to live forever by the sword.

Jordan’s involvement in intercepting Iran’s missiles provides a glimpse of what that alternative future could look like.

Palestinian History: Understanding the Past, Engaging with the Present

A Brief History of Kill Lists, From Langley to Lavender

Lavender system had a database of 37,000 Palestinian men with suspected links to Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ).

Lavender assigns a numerical score, from one to a hundred, to every man in Gaza, based mainly on cellphone and social media data, and automatically adds those with high scores to its kill list of suspected militants. Israel uses another automated system, known as “Where’s Daddy?”, to call in airstrikes to kill these men and their families in their homes.

Peter Maass, Author at The Intercept

“I’m Jewish, and I’ve covered wars. I know war crimes when I see them.” Maass, who was a senior editor at The Intercept until earlier this year, has spent decades covering wars, including the Bosnian genocide in the 1990s that killed about 100,000 people over nearly four years. He says many of the same war crimes he reported then are part of Israel’s current assault, including sniper attacks on civilians, bombing of civilian infrastructure, attacks on bread lines and besieging whole populations by preventing food and other aid from entering. “What seems to be unfolding in Gaza is even worse than what I saw in Bosnia,” says Maass.

Suspending the Rule of Tolerable Violence: Israel’s Attack and Iran’s Retaliation – » The Australian Independent Media Network

For decades, Israel has struck targets in sovereign countries with impunity, using expansive doctrines of pre-emption and self-defence. In doing so, the state always hoped that the understanding of tolerable violence would prevail. Any retaliation, if any, would be modest, with “deterrence” assured. With the war in Gaza and the fanning out of conflict, the equation has changed. To some degree, Ben Gvir is right that concepts of restraint and proportionality have been banished to the mortuary. But such banishment, to a preponderant degree, was initiated by Israel. The Israel-Gaza War is now, effectively, a global conflict, waged in regional miniature.

This week’s congressional letter also cited a March 23 statement from dozens of organizations — including Doctors Without Borders, International Rescue Committee, Oxfam America, and Save the Children USA — that called out Israeli authorities “consistently and arbitrarily” denying, restricting, and impeding humanitarian aid.

“We remain concerned by the stark differences and gaps in the assessments being made by the State Department and White House on how Israel has not been found to be in violation of international humanitarian law, either when it comes to the conduct of the war or when it comes to the provision of humanitarian assistance, which are contradictory to those made by prominent experts and global institutions,” the members of Congress wrote.

Mass grave discovered at Gaza hospital occupied by Israeli forces | Gaza | Al Jazeera

A United Nations (UN) team inspects the grounds of Al-Shifa, Gaza's largest hospital, which was reduced to rubble by a two-week Israeli raid, on April 8, 2024.

Health workers in northern Gaza exhumed the first corpses from mass graves in and around Al-Shifa Hospital on Tuesday, after they said Israeli forces killed hundreds of Palestinians and left their bodies to decompose during their two-week siege of the complex.

At least 381 bodies were recovered from the vicinity of the complex since Israeli forces withdrew on April 1, Gaza Civil Defense spokesperson Mahmoud Basal said on Tuesday, adding that the total figure did not include people buried within the grounds of the hospital.

Iran is acting more rationally than Israel — for now

Israeli security and rescue forces take part in a drill near Meron, northern Israel, April 16, 2024. (David Cohen/Flash90)

Had Iran sought to catch Israel by surprise, it could have unleashed the ballistic missiles that were deployed in the final phase of the attack, whose flight time is 10-12 minutes, without any warning. Moreover, the overwhelming majority of these missiles were aimed at Israeli military bases — that is, Iran refrained from targeting civilian population centers. Only one person was seriously wounded as a result of the attack: a 7-year-old girl from an unrecognized Bedouin village, who was injured by a fragment of a missile that was intercepted by the Iron Dome (unrecognized villages, home to over 100,000 Arab Bedouin citizens in the Negev/Naqab desert, are not provided with shelters, leaving them completely exposed to rockets and falling shrapnel). Immediately afterward, Iran announced that as far as it was concerned, the issue was settled, unless Israel insisted on retaliating further.

Netanyahu Bolstered Hamas – CounterPunch.org

It doesn’t escape anybody that, to a large extent, this has to do with Netanyahu’s desire to escape accountability for his actions. What is becoming increasingly evident is that absolute power has transformed him, making him even more ruthless and more impervious to criticism or to the calls for human kindness.

“Anyone who wants to thwart the establishment of a Palestinian state has to support bolstering Hamas and transferring money to Hamas. This is part of our strategy –to isolate the Palestinians in Gaza from the Palestinians in the West Bank,” he declared years later. Consequent with this strategy, between 2012 and 2018 Netanyahu gave approval to Qatar to transfer a total of approximately a billion dollars to Gaza, half of which went to Hamas, including its military wing.

Israeli Massacres Continue in Gaza, as Returnees to North are Targeted and Refugee Camp is Bombed

In fact, it is by now all a war crime. This is not “self-defense” or “defeating Hamas.” It is just bombing people you think may have served in the Hamas paramilitary at some point, and everyone around them. Some 10 percent of the AI identifications are admitted to be faulty. And the rationale for killing every single paramilitary member is weak, especially if it is done from the air, leaving them no opportunity to surrender, and especially if you are trying to kill their children and wives along with them.

Gun Culture, Israeli Style

While the Biden administration displayed a welcome bit of good sense in making it clear to Israel that it would not supply guns to be given to civilians, Ben Gvir is unlikely to allow that to stop him. Few Israelis will object right now to equipping settlers with rifles, as hostility toward Palestinians in general has intensified. But a permissive attitude toward guns will only lead to an increase in violence and, just as importantly, will crystallize the anger felt by both sides, making any hope of justice and reconciliation even more remote.

Netanyahu, Empowered by Biden’s Grant of Impunity, baits Iran into his genocidal Gaza War

Instead, Biden and his allies declined to condemn Netanyahu’s action, continuing the North Atlantic insouciance toward Israeli war crimes and continuing the implementation of their double standard whereby International Humanitarian Law applies only to white people. That is, there is not as much difference between Trumpian white nationalism and Biden’s foreign policy as it might seem on the surface, though Trump is of course far worse.*

Are the United States and Israel heading toward a Divorce?

The administration has not stopped supplying Israel with military assistance or attached any conditions on that aid, despite some congressional pressure. More than 30 House Democrats, including Nancy Pelosi, recently sent a letter strongly urging Biden “to reconsider your recent decision to authorize the transfer of a new arms package to Israel, and to withhold this and any future offensive arms transfers until a full investigation into the airstrike is completed.” The distressing part is that it took the killing of international aid workers, not the tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians, to prompt such a letter.
