Climate Crisis: Greece’s Record Rainfall, Flooding, are part of a Mediterranean trend to more Dangerous Weather

According to Murdoch Media, these events are local and exceptional only in those areas in which they occur and maintain there’s nothing to worry about globally. Australia predicted to be the most threatened place by global climate change is being laughed at by News Corp and on a regular basis by hired media puppets like Andrew Bolt and Rowan Dean. Despite the increasing scientific data that’s been collected even when the government cut back on research.

These unprecedented flash floods were triggered by rainfall from the arrival of Storm Daniel on Monday September 4 which also affected Turkey and Bulgaria. The following day, in the village of Zagora, a record-breaking 754mm of rain fell in just 18 hours, leaving parts of the region of Thessaly in crisis and unable to respond.

Breaking the suicidal impasse – Pearls and Irritations

Part of a globe with map of Australia on wood background.

Man on a mission to not just self-destruct but take the planet with it

In the last few months events have occurred globally which indicate an astonishing, but not unexpected, acceleration in the pace of climate change. The world has now entered a new era of extremely dangerous climate impacts which are already proving catastrophic in many parts of the world. The factors which hitherto have constrained warming, such as the inertia of the climate system and the cooling effect of atmospheric aerosols, are fading, pushing the global climate system into uncharted territory.

Idalia: DeSantis may not want to “politicize” Climate Change, but Climate Change is determined to Politicize DeSantis

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, on being asked about human-caused climate change, said he did not want to “politicize the weather.” Of course, it is not the weather that is at issue but climate, which is long-term and repeated weather patterns. DeSantis ducked the question because Koch Industries and ExxonMobil etc. are big donors to Republican candidates and he did not want to alienate them. DeSantis says that hurricanes are not more frequent now than in the twentieth century. But frequency is not the issue. Intensity is the issue. DeSantis turned down $350 million from the Biden administration for the green energy transition, of which governors like Michigan’s Gretchen Whitmer are making use to create jobs and slash carbon pollution.

With the beginning of the hurricane season, the climate is announcing that it is perfectly happy to politicize DeSantis.

Climate Change is now throwing at us Every Weapon in its Arsenal, from Heat Domes to Massive Wildfires, to Mega-Hurricanes

For the most part, the earth is heating up just in the way that climate change models from a decade ago had predicted if we went on spewing 35 billion tons of carbon pollution into the atmosphere every year. And we have. The frightening thing is that unfolding climate events are sometimes worse than the models had suggested because of factors of which the models did not take account.

Climate Change Litigation: The Montana Precedent – » The Australian Independent Media Network

Mordecai Bromberg wiser than the Supreme Court

The lower court decision had shaken the fossil fuel industry with its finding in favour of the eight children and their litigation guardian, an octogenarian nun. Justice Bromberg found that considering the potential harm arising from carbon dioxide emissions was a mandatory consideration of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act. The Minister for the Environment also had a duty of care given that it was reasonably foreseeable that the Australian children would face a risk of harm in extending the mine project. Furthermore, the Minister had control over that risk, given that she could approve the extension, and that the children were vulnerable to a real risk of harm arising from climatic threats.

What do climate denialists say when the facts change? – Pearls and Irritations

Contrary opinions. One hand, thumb in the air, gives a favourable opinion, another thumb pointed down, opposes it.

Remember when Andrew Bolt kept telling us the world was “cooling”. He no longer does but parrots off that the proposed “solutions” to climate change are wrong. Has the worm really turned?

The indefatigable Creighton does though use one of the most recent versions of the denialist position with the proviso: “Noone denies that climate changes. It always has, for reasons obviously unrelated to human activity. The question is how much of its our fault”.

for some time now, researchers have suggested that the balance of arguments propagated by climate sceptics or denialists has shifted from denying or undermining climate science to challenging policy solutions designed to reduce emissions.

“To comprehend the truth and not act upon it – is there a greater sin than this? Knowledge masked is murder.”

We might also take solace in all this with A.E.Housman’s “The house of delusions is cheap to build, but drafty to live in, and ready at any instance to fall…..It is and it must in the long run be better for a man to see things as they are than to be ignorant of them.”

But then it’s hard to see things clearly if you read Adam Creighton and watch Fox news or Sky After Dark.

Two white youths raise their fists into the air in celebration. They stand next to a bright blue sign that partially reads "Montana Youth Making." In the background, others give high fives.

Would Dan allow a decision like this to happen in Australia? Or would kids trying to sue the State in Australia be decreed “Vexatious Litigants” and have them arrested for contempt?

A healthy climate is included in your constitutional rights, at least if you live in Montana. On Monday, District Court Judge Kathy Seeley sided with the 16 young plaintiffs who sued Montana three years ago, arguing that its pro–fossil fuels legislation violated their right to a safe environment. Seeley ruled in the case, Held v. Montana, that “plaintiffs have a fundamental constitutional right to a clean and healthful environment, which includes climate as part of the environmental life support system.”

Wildfires, pushed by powerful winds, raced through Lahaina, Hawaii, on Aug. 8 and 9, 2023, leaving a charred and smoldering landscape across the tourist town of about 13,000 residents that was once the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii. At least 36 people died, Maui County officials said. Others were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard after going into the ocean to escape the flames.

During Earth’s hottest year, Murdoch’s climate denial is un-fucking-hinged – The Shot

Andrew Bolt for years insisted that the REAL science showed us the world was cooling from 1998 until 2018. He falsely accredited himself with Adelaide University qualifications when he had none. He was even included in the IPA’s book published at the time of REAL facts and declared a “world expert. Today Mr Bolt is a nobody even in the current decibel output of the News Corp’s new brigade of climate deniers claiming to provide us with the REAL facts. They have all barrelled over the top of Andrew Who? Who has been left behind in their wake.

Given the gravity of climate denialism’s consequences, it should in the future be considered a serious crime. We would not be in this perilous position without it. This isn’t Thought Police shit, calm down Twitter Blue subscriber, this is about perspective, about survival, about punishments fitting the scale of the sin. We lock teenagers up for possessing marijuana; why not CEOs, and politicians and journalists for collaborating with our species’ own demise? 416,000 Years Ago, All Greenland’s Ice Melted and Raised Sea Levels 5-20 Feet: A Warning from the Past

About 400,000 years ago, large parts of Greenland were ice-free. Scrubby tundra basked in the Sun’s rays on the island’s northwest highlands. Evidence suggests that a forest of spruce trees, buzzing with insects, covered the southern part of Greenland. Global sea level was much higher then, between 20 and 40 feet above today’s levels. Around the world, land that today is home to hundreds of millions of people was under water.

Scientists have known for awhile that the Greenland ice sheet had mostly disappeared at some point in the past million years, but not precisely when.

Oceans absorb 30% of our CO2 Emissions; Phytoplankton are Central to its Climate Impacts

In Australia, AGL is about to double it’s profit. The mega electricity and gas supplier delivered its upgraded full-year profit targets on Friday. AGL shares jumped more than 14 percent higher in early trade and closed at $10.60. Meanwhile, they continued to announce again and again their “plans” to replace their antiquated coal plants. These “announcements” have now spanned years of no action on the part of this giant Australian emitter of CO2. Gunna AGL is what it is all talk and no action.

The ocean holds 60 times more carbon than the atmosphere and absorbs almost 30% of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from human activities. This means the ocean is key to understanding the global carbon cycle and thus our future climate.

It probably reflects the resurgence of the world economy as the COVID pandemic has transitioned to an endemic infection and governments have dropped most prophylactic measures. How Big Oil is Manipulating the Way You Think About Climate Change – scheerpost.com

A logic professor explains how a persistent, subtle fallacy has infected public discussion of climate change.

In medieval times, gamekeepers trained dogs to the hunt by setting them on the trail of a dead rabbit they had dragged through the forest. Once the dogs were baying along the rabbit’s scent, the gamekeeper ran across the trail ahead of them, dragging a gunny sack of red herrings. Red herrings are smoked fish that have been aged to a ruddy, stinking ripeness. If any dog veered off to follow the stench of the red herrings, the gamekeeper beat him with a stick. Thus did dogs learn not to be lured into barking up the wrong tree.

This practice became the namesake of one of the best-known types of fallacies, the red herring fallacy. As a philosophy professor, this is how I explain the fallacy to my students: If the argument is not going your opponent’s way, a common strategy — though a fallacious and dishonorable one — is to divert attention from the real issue by raising an issue that is only tangentially related to the first.

The Market Won’t Save Us: How to Rapidly Reduce Deadly Fossil Fuel Use

( Foreign Policy in Focus ) – The burning of fossil fuels—oil, coal, natural gas—is responsible for nearly 90 percent of global carbon emissions. Despite almost-universal recognition of the need to reduce the use of those fossil fuels, the industrialized world is having the hardest time breaking its addiction. The economic rebound from the COVID-19 shutdowns generated the largest ever increase in global emissions from fossil fuels in 2021—around 2 billion tons. The increase in 2022 was considerably more modest—thanks to a surge in renewable energy investments—but it was an increase nonetheless. Meanwhile, subsidies for fossil fuel consumption rose to….

2/3s of the Extra Dry Air that encourages Wildfires comes from Humanity burning Fossil Fuels

The earth’s atmosphere can make things wet or dry them out depending on the water vapor pressure. When there is a Vapor Pressure Deficit, it dries the earth out. VPD is defined as “a measure of atmospheric water demand defined as the difference between the amount of water vapor in the air and the amount of water vapor that air would hold at saturation.” If there is a lot less water vapor than the atmosphere would normally hold, all other things being equal, you have a bigger deficit. A dry atmosphere also makes the earth beneath it drier. Dry land conditions are conducive to wildfires. The dryness of the atmosphere can also be seasonal. But more than 66% of the summertime vapor pressure deficit in the West has been caused by human activity in burning fossil fuels.
