No, Mr. Smotrich, Palestinians are not New in History, and all Nationalisms are Modern, including the Israeli

As it now stands, there are two nations on the soil of geographic Palestine, an Israeli one and a Palestinian one. The Palestinian nation, however, is prevented from having a national government. Palestinians are stateless, they are a homeless nation. They are kept stateless, and therefore without basic human rights, by the much stronger Israelis, who get billions and sophisticated weaponry from the United States annually.

That disparity between a full Israeli nation and the stateless, rights-less Palestinians, has driven the conflict and ensured that Israel comes out on top.

The Communist Party claims to have brought prosperity and equality to China. Here’s the real impact of its rule

The current promotion of Chinese culture by the communist party-state is nothing more than a cynical move to exploit any opportunity to boost Chinese nationalism as a tool to provide legitimacy to the regime.

Terrorized Yet? If You Speak Out, You Probably Have Been. Or Will Be. | The Smirking Chimp

Which is why we’d better root out this homegrown terror with at least as much urgency and a lot more sanity than we did when we spent billions attacking the wrong enemy, getting ourselves mired after destabilizing the Middle East, all while enriching war profiteers and giving the American troglodytes of the right a big boost in their power to do us all harm.

Trump’s Executive Order to Manipulate the Minds of US School Children – Stephen Lendman

On November 2, Trump signed an executive order that aims to manipulate the minds of young children. “We will state the truth in full, without apology (sic),” he said, adding: “We declare that the United States of America is the most just and exceptional nation ever to exist on earth (sic).” If bipartisan US hardliners get their way, education at all levels may resemble Nazi Germany and Israeli indoctrination of children. After Nazis gained control in 1933, the infamous Nuremberg Laws followed. Education featured indoctrination and loyalty to the Reich. It laid the groundwork for wars to come. Scholar Louis L. Snyder witnessed Nazi rallies and practices firsthand. He explained that “(t)here were to be two basic educational ideas…” “First, there must be burnt into the heart and brains of youth the sense of race.” “Second, German youth must be made ready for war, educated for victory or death.” “The ultimate purpose of education was to fashion citizens conscious of the glory of country and filled with fanatical devotion to the national cause.” As one of the world’s most militarized societies, Israel resembles Nazi German.

The GOP’s Sinister New Nationalism | The Smirking Chimp

Trump is engaged in political triage. He doesn’t bother campaigning in areas of the country where he’s disliked by the majority. He directs federal funding as much as possible to areas dominated by his supporters. He insults his blue state opponents with electoral impunity. It’s sobering to learn that, according to an analysis in the Cook Political Report, Trump could lose by five million votes — nearly twice the margin of the popular vote in 2016 — and still win the presidency via the Electoral College. Now that is a disgusting mess.

White Nationalism’s Most Powerful Accelerant

The greater problem remains structural, far bigger than the fate of any individual sleaze monger. Educating those susceptible to their messaging as to why these voices are so toxic will be a harder struggle, given the sheer scale Big Tech offers. It will not be easy to do so without meaningful action by the tech industry, which only now seems to be somewhat recognizing that they have become to America today what sidewalk display cases were to Nazi Germany. Whether the U.S. political system is up to the challenge is highly dubious, but I am heartened by New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Arden’s immediate and tenacious workto stop the spread of the Christchurch shooter’s video and extract answers from Facebook.

I see no contradiction between justice being served against the worst progenitors of right-wing extremism and empathy being exercised for the souls of those seduced. If far-right extremism is but a symptom of a national sickness, then the source of those issues is still upstream from the dead end of such violent hatred. And that’s our responsibility to combat—wherever and whenever we encounter it.

Morrison, take heed: nationalist posturing comes back to bite you

Our government understands at least some of these things, which is probably why it loves free trade agreements, and why Scott Morrison as treasurer was so dismissive of Tony Abbott’s suggestion that we slash immigration, citing the billions of dollars it would cost the budget. But this government has now entered a phase of reflex nationalist posturing (remember that thing about acknowledging veterans on Virgin Australia flights?). It simply cannot resist an opportunity to wear the flag as a cape and tell the world who’s in charge. You might love or loathe that as you please. The trouble really starts once you believe the fantasy it offers, because it’s unravelling around the world before our very eyes.

Nothing but blue ties from now on? Or academic and democratic freedom? – » The Australian Independent Media Network

Desperately, the Turnbull government begs the ANU to take on The Ramsay Centre; confer ersatz academic legitimacy on a cheer squad for cultural supremacists. It woos the university for six months but is flatly rejected Thursday.

Vice-Chancellor Brian Schmidt BS Phys, BS Astro, AM Astro, PhD Astro is polite but firm as he lets Ramsay know it’s on the nose. ANU has “serious concerns about its autonomy”, he says. His objections expose The Ramsay Centre utterly. And by extension they are a trenchant criticism of a Coalition keen to undermine if not silence a free and open society.

Professor Schmidt tells Fairfax Media, Thursday, that the Ramsay Centre had “sought a level of influence over our curriculum and staffing that went beyond what any other donor has been granted, and was inconsistent with academic autonomy”. This would set a precedent that would completely undermine the integrity of the university,” he continues, noting the ANU had declined donations before and “will again”.

How nationalism takes shape on Israeli and U.S. borders | +972 Magazine

Americans and Israelis need to resist not only border walls, but also the sentiments and systems that make them possible. By Nadia Naser-Najjab In promising to build a new wall along the American border with Mexico, U.S. President Donald Trump has openly sought to mine the deep racism and chauvinism that runs through parts of American society. Although it has been justified in practical terms, the wall has a particular symbolic significance: it renders a country increasingly unsure of itself and its place in the world, shaken as much by its own contradictions as by an external threat. [tmwinpost] Given that…
