Reflecting the diminishing public support for the AUKUS deal, a new Guardian Essential Poll has found that only one quarter of Australians support paying the $368bn price tag to acquire nuclear submarines. For decades Australians were gung ho about going to war – almost any war. Today – despite the best efforts of the Nine Media (Peter Hartcher in particular) and other media – they are now far more hesitant.

But not the National Party
More than 60% also say they support the Indigenous voice to parliament, with the Liberal party at risk of alienating younger voters if it backs the Nationals’ position
A majority – 59% of a sample of 1,027 voters – say the Liberal leadership change in late September has made no difference, and the government remains the same as it was before the shift. Only 20% think the change of prime minister has created a refresh.

With the postal survey campaign now in full swing, and with analysis suggesting opponents of marriage equality have outspent the yes campaign by about five-to-one in television ads, the latest poll shows 55% (down 4% from a fortnight ago) support changing the law to allow same-sex couples to marry and 34% (up 3%) are opposed.
