Biden’s no LBJ but he must protect voting rights. What else is the presidency for? | US voting rights | The Guardian

Joe Biden points to his face mask in Atlanta, Georgia in January.

In 1963, when the newly sworn in Lyndon Baines Johnson was advised against using his limited political capital on the controversial issue of civil and voting rights for Black Americans, he responded: “Well, what the hell’s the presidency for?”

The Reality Show axed after one season

Trump’s record distinguishes him as the worst president ever. He has lost the popular vote in two national elections. He has been impeached twice, with conviction still possible in the second case. He has been an accomplice to the mass murder of over 400,000 Americans and counting due to the coronavirus. He has caused a massive economic crash. He has incited an insurrection against the government of the United States. He played a corrupt game of footsie with the president of Ukraine, and has been oddly but consistently subservient to the president of Russia. He has grifted the American people out of millions of dollars. He has pardoned associates and acquaintances who could implicate him in crimes. He has been incompetent, indifferent, lazy and vindictive. To top it all off, he has rushed to execute 13 people before his term is up — the most by any president in 120 years.

The end of democracy? If Trump loses, Trumpism still wins

“Trump has attacked virtually every important check-and-balance institution in the US that’s got in his way – the intelligence community, judges, the media. Every significant constraint, he wants to get rid of it.” Of course, he’s also opposed to the ultimate constraint in a democracy – the outcome of elections, unless he happens to win.

. “It’s got crazy when you have a US president promoting completely outrageous false information like QAnon,” the fantasist conspiracy movement. “He came into office completely unprepared and instead of being awed by the responsibility, he’s failed to take it seriously. From top to bottom, he’s filled his administration with mediocrities whose only qualification is loyalty to the President’s family. “Almost every statement that comes out of his mouth is a lie. It’s hard to imagine anyone with worse judgment and less qualified to be president.”

Tom Switzer: Donald Trump fans the flames of resentment and hatred

Protesters gather near the White House on Saturday.

Despite Trump’s pledge of making America great again, the nation is badly off track and there is a haemorrhage of confidence in its future.

As bad as things are now, imagine what happens when the gravity of the looming economic crisis is evident. Americans from anarchists and socialists on the far left to far-right extremists have powerful incentives to get their pitchforks out and bring the system down.

Fire, pestilence and a country at war with itself: the Trump presidency is over | Donald Trump | The Guardian

Donald Trump looks back as he boards Marine One on the South Lawn of the White House on Saturday.

You’d be forgiven if you hadn’t noticed. His verbal bombshells are louder than ever, but Donald J Trump is no longer president of the United States.
Policing in the US is not about enforcing law. It’s about enforcing white supremacy
By having no constructive response to any of the monumental crises now convulsing America, Trump has abdicated his office.

He is not governing. He’s golfing, watching cable TV and tweeting.

‘Worse than Nixon’: Democrats lay out impeachment case in landmark report

The report of the House Intelligence Committee accuses US President Donald Trump of inappropriately trying to influence Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky.

US President Donald Trump subverted official foreign policy for his personal gain, undermined American national security and engaged in an unprecedented attempt to obstruct an impeachment investigation, according to a pivotal report released by Democrats.

The report by the Democrat-controlled House Intelligence Committee, released on Tuesday (Wednesday Australian time), provides a likely blueprint for forthcoming articles of impeachment against Trump over his dealings with Ukraine.
