The longer the burning of fossil fuels goes on, the worse the problem will become. The cost of extracting oil will continue to increase as accessible reserves decrease. When we stop burning oil, all that will be left in the oilfields will be the expensive dregs to extract for making our soap. The sensible approach now would be to encourage the death spiral as quickly as possible. Force the end of fossil fuels for power and preserve as much of our reserves for the rest of society to use. But governments are generally not in the business of forcing huge industries to collapse.

Government stands by renewables goal as Dutton flags opposition

The ALP government confirms their action to increase renewables in order to reduce energy costs and emissions. While Dutton confirms nothing but a promise of opposition to the government offering no alternatives.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton signalled the Coalition would not support legislation for a more expensive, 43 per cent emissions reduction target by 2030 but declined to specify the size of its own, more modest target. “We will announce that before the next election,” Mr Dutton told the ABC.

Parts of NSW and Queensland are suffering unprecedented floods. At the same time, they are experiencing an unprecedented pandemic. Before that, they were dealing with unprecedented bushfires, following unprecedented heatwaves causing unprecedented drought. The loss of biodiversity is being labelled an extinction event as we clear land and destroy habitats. More pandemics are inevitable as we further crowd the planet. Despite decades of warning from every credible expert about the inevitable consequences of constant growth with no regard for the environment, our politicians assume surprise when their unbridled fetish for wealth and power wreaks havoc on the world. We have to sell coal because it increases our GDP. Temporarily. Until the next unprecedented “natural” disaster comes along.

As recommended by the Jenkins Review, on Tuesday, Prime Minister Scott Morrison delivered an acknowledgement and apology to those who have been victims of bullying, sexual harassment and assault whilst working in our Federal Parliament. Apologies are nice but actions speak louder than words and Scott Morrison’s actions continue to prove that he is a heartless, self-centred misogynist. The Prime Minister’s words are at best meaningless, at worse complete lies and his apology is simply a calculated political decision. (POSTURING)

World’s top 10 countries in green bond issuance – Chinadaily.com.cn

Global green bond issuance grew for the ninth straight year, climbing to a record high of $269.5 billion at the end of last year, up from $266.5 billion in 2019, according to the nonprofit organization Climate Bonds Initiative. The United States had the largest issuance of green bonds with $51.1 billion, followed by Germany with $40.2 billion and France with $32.1 billion. China and the Netherlands rounded out the top five with $17.2 billion and $17 billion, respectively. Green bonds involve money borrowed to invest in environmentally-friendly projects, and can be issued by central and local governments as well as banks or corporations. According to the Climate Bonds Initiative, the green bond market has been accelerating sharply over the past five years, with 60 percent average annual growth since 2015. It also predicted that 2021 could be another record year, with issuance rising to as high as $450 billion. Let’s take a look at the top 10 countries leading the way in green bond issuance last year.

As the window for meaningful climate action closes, climate change skeptic Bjorn Lomborg tells right-wing media everything’s going to be all right | Media Matters for America

Morrison along with the Fossil Fuel Industry haven’t changed they have simply moved from denial to less head-on tactics to delay climate action. Lomborg seems to get dragged out for an airing every time Cop comes around and Morrison has simply adopted what Abbott tried to make respectable as far back as 2015. It simply failed Lomborg’s Coppenhagen Consensus Council was seen for what it was. A promoter of  Do-Nothing Governments.

Lomborg’s true value for the polluter industry and its fellow travelers in right-wing media is that he provides a thin veneer of seriousness and sincerity about climate change on one hand, while advocating climate inaction on the other. This cynical stance mirrors that taken by the fossil fuel industry, which has shifted tactics away from outright denial toward subtler forms of climate delay.

Climate change clock ticks as the EU and China work on a Clean Energy Strategy – » The Australian Independent Media Network

While the rest of the planet is making an effort to fall into line and agree on the existential disaster facing it. Scott Morrison remains the last man standing in denial marketing. He sounds more  the voice of the Tobacco Industry rather than the leader of the world’s biggest polluter per head of population and an apologist for it. Like Trump he’s all for seemingly telling Australia he’s going to make “some of us great” and fuck the rest including the world. “We are going to do it the IPA/Murdoch/NLP way”

However, with the European Union recently not ratifying a Comprehensive Economic agreement with China, buying into mostly US driven human rights accusations on China, which in my research hold little evidence, with conflicting claims, is putting humanity at a great risk in hampering a joint strategy in tackling climate change. Geopolitical finger-pointing with agendas never helps humanity. However, a cooperative approach does. The climate change clock is ticking close to an irreversible point for humanity and the European Union must decide.

A controversial US book is feeding climate denial in Australia. Its central claim is true, yet irrelevant

Koonin frames his book as a brave attempt to reveal how the climate science we’ve been relying on all these years is, in fact, uncertain. But the book’s major flaw is to imply these uncertainties are news to climate scientists. This is patently untrue. Science is never settled. But there is enough confidence in the science to justify significant climate action.

Trump Can’t escape having called Nazis “Very Fine People” by SOTU Spectacle

Trump made Bannon his chief strategist in the White House.

Bannon praises Benito Mussolini, who is not as widely vilified in today’s America as he should be. His armies slaughtered 330,000 Allied troops during World War II, including large numbers of Americans. Of 45,000 Italian Jews, 8,000 were delivered to Nazi death camps and a similar number were forced to flee abroad. Some $1 billion was stolen from them as a community.

But guess what. In an opinion poll, 72% of Jewish respondents said they hold that Trump is at least somewhat responsible for the synagogue massacre.

His SOTU spectacle cannot cover up that he helped galvanize those Nazis who invaded Charlottesville.
