How cartoonist Naji al-Ali told the story of Palestine

It was 5:00 p.m. on July 22, 1987 in London. Cartoonist Naji al-Ali was walking towards the offices of the Arabic newspaper al-Qabas when a shot rang out. He was struck once in the throat by a lone gunman, mortally wounding him. In a hospital five weeks later, he died on August 29. At that time, he was the most famous cartoonist in the Arabic-speaking world.

A Garden of Stone

The public, in particular the Democrats, need to demand the Army release the report that was filed after the incident. The American government has spent too much time lying to its soldiers, Marines, Navy seamen, airmen, and everyone called to the colors. There were no WMD in Iraq, but there was oil, and securing access to it is a hell of a thing to ask a man or woman to die for, but some did, and their caskets were wrapped in flags and shrouded with the greater lie that they were defending our freedoms. Their honorable service to dishonest politicians is a moral contradiction creating a rot at the core of our democracy. We do not honor their memories by allowing a convicted felon, adjudicated rapist, serial philanderer, insurrectionist, and pathological liar to even trod the ground where they rest, nor can we tell lies to the families of the fallen.

Or they will have died in vain.

Rebuking New York University for trying to Outlaw Criticism of Israel by Conflating Zionism with Judaism

We write on behalf of the Middle East Studies Association of North America (MESA) and its Committee on Academic Freedom to express our grave concern about the updated Guidance and Expectations for Student Conduct which the administration of New York University (NYU) circulated to the university community on 22 August 2024. Some of the provisions of this new policy statement impose unacceptable limits on the right of students and faculty to freedom of speech and assembly, and the guidelines also threaten academic freedom. They thereby infringe on the values of open inquiry and freedom of expression that are foundational to higher education and to citizenship in a democracy.

UNRWA head accuses Israel of buying Google ads to block donations to agency

“The spread of misinformation & disinformation continues to be used as a weapon in the war in Gaza,” he wrote.

Israel has campaigned for years against UNRWA, the main organisation delivering humanitarian aid to Palestinians in the occupied Palestinian territory and providing services for Palestinian refugees in other countries since 1949, claiming it has connections with “terrorists” and lobbying for its closure.

Last month, the UN denounced an Israeli government spokesperson after he described Lazzarini as a “terrorist sympathiser”.

Israel tightens restrictions on food, medicine at Gaza crossings

Israel’s Hasbara Games. It first announced loudly and constantly that it would and has allowed food into Gaza, but the UN failed in distribution. Israel doesn’t broadcast the continuous evacuation orders that prevent that distribution. Then we hear Vaccines are being generously supplied, but not that health workers are being targeted and told to evacuate and people are being constantly kept on the move. Now the restriction of food and medicines is being reported again, we can expect announcements on Israel’s humanitarian generosity and the failure of NGOs again.

Israel’s West Bank Attacks Fuel Its Annexation Plans

“This is not as much about Hamas as it is about the Israeli state’s long-term plan to eliminate, wipe Palestine off the map.”

“Even the elders of the family who have seen it all — lived through ’67, lived through the intifadas, Oslo — they’re like, ‘This is the worst it’s ever been,’” Asi said.

“People who pride themselves on being resilient and not being afraid as part of their Palestinian identity, they are genuinely afraid,” she continued. “To leave one’s house, especially if you have a son, is to have a real material fear of death. … If something happens, there’s not going to be an investigation, there’s not going to be a tribunal: It’s going to just be another statistic.”

1988 News

As the Israelis have sought to throttle the five-month-old Palestinian uprising, they have turned to a form of arrest that they call “administrative detention” as one of their prime weapons. Until December, Israel generally held about 50 Arabs under these regulations. Now Israeli officials say the number is at least 1,700, more than one-third of the total 5,000 Palestinians currently imprisoned for alleged involvement in the revolt.”

‘The result, according to critics, including defense lawyers, human rights activists and diplomats, is an arbitrary and harsh system of secret justice that has few discernible rules or standards and that offers its victims no workable appeal. …

Trump represents chaos and division while Harris represents unification and normality. And in a political landscape where the nephew of a former president can campaign on the evils of vaccination and a 6 times bankrupt, maybe-billionaire can brag of overthrowing the election, and no American citizen is sure whether to vote or not and if they do, will their vote even count – unification and normality is sorely what a fractured, disUnited States of America needs.

Mary Kostakidis, for years the face of television news in Australia as anchor of the SBS

The complaint to the Australian Human Rights Commission, from Alon Cassuto, the CEO of the Zionist Federation of Australia, highlights just two Kostakidis retweets from January this year, both of which contain a video of a speech by Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in which he allegedly called for the ethnic cleansing of Israel.

One of the retweets is from independent British journalist Richie Medhurst, who was arrested at Heathrow airport and held for nearly 24 hours under the UK Terrorism Act this month. Medhurst is one of the most vocal critics of Israel’s war on Gaza. The other tweet is from a user named Censored Men.

Cassuto wants Kostakidis to apologise, remove the allegedly offensive materials from her X account; promise not to post similar tweets in future and pay his legal costs.

The complaint was levelled under Section 18C(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act, which says:

“it is unlawful for a person to do an act, otherwise than in private, if:

 (a) the act is reasonably likely, in all the circumstances, to offend, insult, humiliate or intimidate another person or a group of people; and

 (b) the act is done because of the race, colour or national or ethnic origin of the other person or of some or all of the people in the group.”
