Al-Aqsa Flood & the End of Partition

The world must face the reality that Palestinian political demands cannot be erased or sidelined under the all-encompassing but unconvincing banner of fighting terrorism. Rather than learning these lessons, Western policymakers appear content to serve as active partners in the Israeli regime’s current ethnic cleansing campaign — the nakba of my generation.

Dutton’s border protection rhetoric is nothing like his border protection record – Pearls and Irritations

Passengers walking through Australian border force lines

When the Media reports what you say rather than what you did. It’s not Australian it’s News Corp

Dutton created the ideal environment for criminals to exploit Australia’s visa system. The recent report by Christine Nixon lays bare Dutton’s failures on border protection.

Sadly, few Australians will remember Dutton’s failures on border protection. They will remember Dutton’s rhetoric and fear mongering on border protection.

Displaced Ukrainians stuck without access to Medicare, rental assistance | SBS News

Yevhen Kalivod from Dnipro in Ukraine.

Yes, another Morrison Promise in action, The bubble that is fast failing to materialise into little more than a vacuous announcement..

Ukrainians who have come to Australia after fleeing their war-torn country have found themselves stuck in limbo without access to Medicare or the right to work due to restrictions on their visitor visas (subclass 600). Advertisement Displaced Ukrainians are waiting for the federal government to grant temporary humanitarian visas (subclass 786), which would allow holders to work, study and access Medicare for three years. Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Immigration Minister Alex Hawke announced on 20 March plans to make the visa available, but it still hasn’t come to fruition, meaning displaced Ukrainians have been completely dependant on not-for-profits for food and accommodation since their arrival.

Nah – you can’t change the date – » The Australian Independent Media Network

Of course, we can change the date. While we can’t unscramble the egg and pretend Captain Phillip and his ships, full of the ‘dregs’ of English society never landed, we can move the date of the national celebration and reflection to something far less confrontational to many. Maybe we should consider a long weekend around the time of the first sitting of the Australian Parliament – which occurred on May 9, 1901. After all, the long weekend is an Australian tradition we probably all support! What do you think?

Nuclear White Elephants: Australia’s New Submarine Deal – » The Australian Independent Media Network

It does not get any messier or more chaotic than this. Since 2009, when Australia’s Future Submarine Program (FSP) known as Project SEA 1000, began to take shape, strategists and policy makers have been keen to pursue the next big White Elephant of defence spending. And few areas of an already wasteful area of public expenditure are more costly – often mindlessly so – than submarines. The Australian effort here is particularly impressive. Pick a real winner by signing a contract for a yet to be designed attack class submarine, supposedly necessary in an increasingly dangerous region. Ensure that this design is based on a nuclear model and remove that attribute, aptly described as “dumbing down a nuclear submarine by removing the whole basis of its superior capability, and then charging at least twice as much for a far less capable submarine.”

The AFR’s 2021 Rich List shows we’re not all in this together

An inequity stacked system

While the financial well-being of everyday Australians has been hit hard by COVID-19, it’s quite the opposite at the top end of town. “Australia’s billionaires have thrived during the pandemic year”, is how the AFR puts it. But let’s not laud this as an achievement. It’s a glaring signal the system is stacked. Through the worst economic crisis in a generation, the elite got richer while millions of Australians just hung on, or saw their slim assets evaporate.

Trump’s Rosy Economic Outlook Is a Big Lie | The Smirking Chimp

As per an analysis by FiveThirtyEight.com, the 3.5% unemployment figure is misleading; only about half of all employable Americans are working full time, 10% are working part time, 2.1% are actively seeking work but are unemployed, and 1.8% are not seeking work but want a job. A whopping 35% are out of the job market and not actively seeking work.

2017: A year of Turnbull, Trump and rampant neoliberalism

Neoliberalism currently dominates world politics. This wealth shifting from labour to capital is based on trickle-down theories. By giving more money to the 1% – the so-called wealth creators – there will eventually be more money and jobs for the 99%. The only problem is that the 1% do not create wealth. Their profit, interest, dividends and rent, come from workers.
