After Brexit and Trump, rightwing populists cling to power – but the truth is they can’t govern | Jonathan Freedland | The Guardian

House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy (second from right) with staffers during the ninth round of voting at the US Capitol in Washington, Thursday 5 January.

If they can’t elect their speaker how can the expect to govern?

There has been a karmic pleasure in watching the Republicans who won control of the House of Representatives struggle to complete the most basic piece of business – the election of a speaker – but it’s also been instructive, and not only to Americans. For it has confirmed the dirty little secret of that strain of rightwing populist politics that revels in what it calls disruption: it always ends in bitter factional fighting, chaos and paralysis.

Morrison re-ignites religious discrimination debate that drove a wedge through Coalition | The New Daily

Christians, The Blessed Minority, Promise to Rule the Federation.

Greg Abbott and Donald Trump

The LNP would do the same if it weren’t for Compulsory Voting. The ALP is the only party that actually respects the right of all people to vote and sets out to serve us all. Yes, they make errors and Pink Bats may have been considered one but compared to the errors made by the current LNP, and where they have brought us today, the ALP’s mistakes have been trivial. The LNP’s errors, on the other hand,  have been deliberate and have rippled across not just the domestic landscape but the planet and in the worst possible of ways.

More than 40 years ago, Republican political operative Paul Weyrich told a right-wing gathering, “I don’t want everybody to vote. Elections are not won by a majority of people. They never have been from the beginning of our country, and they are not now. As a matter of fact, our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down.”

The Insurrection Was Put Down. The GOP Plan for Minority Rule Marches On. – Mother Jones

However Trump has declared he was ready to destroy the GOP

In 2018, Democrats swept every statewide race in Wisconsin, ending nearly a decade of Republican rule. “The voters spoke,” Democrat Tony Evers said after defeating incumbent Gov. Scott Walker. “A change is coming, Wisconsin!” Not so fast. A month later, the GOP-controlled legislature convened an unprecedented lame-duck session to strip the incoming governor of key administrative and appointment powers and shorten the early voting period to dampen future Democratic turnout. Though their opponents had won more votes, Republicans believed only they were entitled to exercise power.
