What happened to Indigenous Rights? The world will judge Australia harshly – Pearls and Irritations

Sunrise in Australia; a dramatic contrast of red and black behind the gold disc of the sun; the image is reminiscent of the iconic Australian Aboriginal flag.

The World viewed Australia as Voting No to Indigenous Rights and Voting No to Palestinian Rights. That makes us unique and exceptional assholes even among colonizing nations.

We should not be surprised if as a consequence of the defeat of the referendum the world judges us harshly, accusing us of bad faith and hypocrisy. The extraordinary fact that our international commitments were rarely, if ever mentioned, in such a consequential debate suggests, at least, that the face that we turn to the world is very different from the one we present to the domestic electorate, and that international documents we sign up to are kept from sight rather than explained and publicised.

If you 'don’t know' about the Voice, how about you actually listen?

“Yes” Lidia but It begins with a “Yes”  and not “No”

Senator Lidia Thorpe was at the National Press Club outlining many of the arguments the Indigenous “progressive No” have been making, and highlighting what she believes is the way forward:

– Truth-telling about Australia’s history,

– Implementing the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody,

– Implementation of recommendations from the Bringing Them Home Report,

– Writing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples into Australian law, – Treaty.

Climate of contention clouds Voice Referendum

Intentional confusion on the part of the fearmongering LNP seems to have gained some traction in Australia as far as the First Nation Peoples are concerned. Australia remains unique and behind the rest of the world in its resistance to what other nations have regarded as common sense for generations.

According to the latest Resolve Strategic poll for Nine media, support for a Yes vote in the upcoming referendum has fallen to 44%. Opposition has climbed eight points to 39%, while 18% are undecided.

NT senator brings family story to ‘no’ campaign ad

jacinta price

Senator Price speaks for herself and is entitled to as any individual is. However, she doesn’t speak for Indigenous Australian Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders peoples and ignores their place in the history of this Nation.

The very fact she’s an MP doesn’t make her special or guarantee that she is operating in the best interests of Australia. Her Voice will not only correct our history or improve it by resisting the necessary changes to the past 240 years of racist decision-making for and about the First Peoples of this Nation. Australia remains the only Colonial nation on this planet that fails to acknowledge the history and the people here before 1788.

The new coalition spokeswoman for Indigenous Australians says the voice referendum will divide Australians along racial lines in a new advertisement

Australian War Memorial needs to own Australian frontier wars – » The Australian Independent Media Network

Proper recognition and commemoration of the Australian Frontier Wars at the Australian War Memorial would be a practical expression of the Spirit of Uluru. As the Albanese government begins the lengthy process of enshrining the Voice in the Australian Constitution, having the Memorial commit to Australian Frontier Wars recognition and commemoration could happen soon – provided the will exists in both the Memorial and the government.

Day to Day Politics: Defining Aboriginality. Hanson style. – » The Australian Independent Media Network

Thursday 1 December 2016 1 When in an interview with Andrew Bolt, Pauline Hanson said ”there’s no definition of an indigenous Australian” I at first blush thought she can’t be serious, surely. “I think the whole lot needs to be opened up on this, a big debate on this.” She said. Yesterday, in response to some…
