Israel was told ‘you are not alone’ – but year of war has left it isolated62%
71%Percentage of Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents in US who said they had little or no confidence in Netanyahu, in Pew Research published in May
Israel’s first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion, famously said: “Our future does not depend on what the gentiles will say, but on what the Jews will do.” His argument was that the Jewish people could no longer be dependent on others as they had been for 2,000 years. Instead they were independent, self-reliant and creators of their own destiny.
In Gaza and Lebanon, Israel is projecting its force while burrowing itself deeper into a quagmire. While it may achieve brief operational successes, it fails to extinguish the spirit of the resistance or coerce it into submission.
What is even more striking is that by 2065, 49 percent of Israelis under the age of 15 will be ultra-orthodox Jews. In other words, by the time Israel as a nation is more than 100 years old, its essentially secular and Zionist character will be fundamentally altered, given that the typical ultra-orthodox Jew has views and values that are at odds with other Jews. Thus, members of the Haredim community overwhelmingly support the application of religious laws (Halakha) as a way of governing Israel, believe in gender segregation, prohibits membership of women in political parties, practices strict dress codes for men and men, abhors the notion of women singing in public and would like cessation of commercial activities during the Jewish Sabbath (which fall on Saturdays). There is, according to one survey, hardly any interaction between Haredi Jews and others. More importantly, ultra-orthodox Jews have historically opposed Zionism as ‘religious heresy’.
According to DFAT, since signing the MOU with Israel on defence manufacture in 2017, Australia has exported $16 million worth of military related equipment to Israel. Around $3.28 million of that has been on the Federal Labor Government’s watch since coming to power in May 2022, with another $1.57 million of military material exported to Israel in February this year.
If the Albanese Government is genuine in calling for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza and a two-state solution, it needs to re-evaluate those connections between the two countries that may hinder these objectives and apply sanctions. These include halting the weapons trade, support for illegal settlements and reviewing dual citizenship for those serving in the IDF.
Australia is much more than a bit player in relations with Israel, as a closer examination of the extensive connections between the two countries illustrates. These links go under the radar of the general public most of the time.
Western journalists claim to report the news objectively and fairly. If they really did, this is what coverage of Netanyahu’s assassination might look like…
Gaza’s children have no voice. Their cries go unheard. Their tears evaporate in the summer heat, and merge with the winter rain. No one comes from outside to make a documentary about them. No one comes at all.
If Gaza’s children survive, will they ever get to dance?
In 2010, I was living in Paris, and I went to, to the United Kingdom and never came back. Until now. It’s. Good to be back. And it’s good to be amongst people who, as we say in Australia, who give a damn.
It’s good to be amongst friends. And I would just like to thank all the people who have fought for my liberation. And who have understood, importantly, that my liberation was coupled to their own liberation.
The basic fundamental liberties which sustain us all have to be fought for.
And that when one of us falls through the cracks. Soon enough, those cracks will widen and take the rest of us down. So thank you for your your courage in this and other settings and, keep up the fight.
