While the overall picture of Oct. 7 has become clearer, an independent investigation is necessary to fully understand the events.
Israel has blocked such an inquiry and destroyed evidence, likely fearing it would reveal inconvenient truths that could undermine what little public support remains for its ongoing military operations in Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon.
Prior to October 7, religious Zionist and other far-right factions had gained influence over Israel’s military, judiciary, and parliament. They have used the war to tighten their grip on power, suppressing the few challengers to the ongoing violence.

Yet once again, this was not enough for the Israeli government.
We must understand what happened leading up to that nightmarish day and certainly we cannot be blind to has happened since.

Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestinian lands, its continuing apartheid rule over millions of Palestinians, and its extreme violence to defend that rule, all put Israel’s survival in jeopardy, as Israel faces dire threats from global diplomatic isolation and the ongoing war, including the war’s massive economic, social, and financial costs.
We need to once and for all dispose of the West and the East as a clash of civilizations. Militaries and militias should not have to race to eliminate either side. They should instead realize that their fate is as intertwined as their past, and that only dialogue can solve conflict.
