‘No one could have believed while he was prime minister that Fraser’s final intervention in Australian politics would be the argument for the abandonment of the US alliance.

Words Tony Abbott would choke on

Lucy and I were very sad to learn of the death of our friend Malcolm Fraser and we send our condolences to his wife Tamie and their children.Malcolm Fraser came to the Parliament as a young farmer from the Western Districts of Victoria. He grew into a great leader of the Liberal Party and a reforming, visionary Prime Minister who laid so many of the foundations for the diverse, multicultural nation we are today.

Malcolm was rather shy and often appeared somewhat aloof (not least because of his great height). But those who knew him well saw a warm, droll and often very exuberant man.

In office and out of it he showed himself to have a big and compassionate heart. He introduced the Aboriginal Land Rights Act in 1976 and was a strong campaigner against racism around the world leading the Commonwealth’s campaign against white minority rule in Rhodesia and apartheid in South Africa.

Malcolm Fraser’s Government established the Family Court, the Commonwealth Ombudsman, the Human Rights Commission and our first Freedom of Information legislation.

He was a passionate believer in multiculturalism and immigration. He enabled large scale migration from Asia, including over 50,000 refugees from Vietnam. He established the Special Broadcasting Service as a multicultural broadcaster.

Modern Australia would be very different without his vision and leadership.

As Petro Georgiou said when he retired from the Parliament in 2010 “To those who have sought to denigrate Malcolm Fraser I just want to say one thing: Malcolm Fraser’s fusion of political toughness, with compassion and social conscience, is simply beyond their comprehension.”
He was a young Prime Minister and had a long retirement enjoying vigorous good health until his recent illness. He continued to play a very active role in public life, never afraid to criticise governments when in his view they fell short. I was privileged to work closely with him on the Republic Campaign in 1999.

Malcolm was a fierce political warrior, but over the years he set a great example of the importance of reconciliation and remembering the things that unite us. I think all of us were delighted to see the way in which Malcolm and Gough Whitlam became friends in their retirement and found common ground in several causes whether it was defending Fairfax from takeover or advocating an Australian republic.

Above all he was utterly committed to Australia and its independence and maintained his writing and advocacy on foreign policy right up to his death. A fierce cold warrior during his days in office he became over the years concerned that Australia was too compliant with American foreign policy especially with respect to China.

Indeed his last tweet from 11.20 am on Wednesday this week, little more than a day before he died, was linked to an article about Chinese foreign policy.

Whether one agreed with him or not, in whole or in part, one thing was never in doubt. Malcolm Fraser was a passionately patriotic Australian with a big, liberal vision for our country and its people.

Scott Morrison has no respect

Back to the Future. Leaders are meant to be inspirational who does Abbott inspire??? Oh yes ISIL

Andrew Wilkie

Howard should be tried for ‘conspiracy to commit mass murder’, says Andrew Wilkie ex Lieutenant Colonel ADF.

Howard says Wilkie an ex ADF intelligence officer ex LNP member is wrong despite being embarassed. Malcolm Fraser said it then and is still saying it now.

Independent MP says former prime minister should be ‘deeply ashamed that he lied’ over the 2003 invasion of Iraq

MP Andrew Wilkie “I was shocked to see that John Howard is only embarrassed, almost embarrassed for himself. What he should be is deeply ashamed that he lied to the Australian public 11.5 years ago, and took us into an unnecessary war, a war that has killed countless Iraqis and other people, which effectively destroyed that country and created the conditions for the rise of not just the Islamic State but other groups,” Wilkie told reporters in Canberra.

“Look frankly I’m disappointed that the prosecutor at the international criminal court hasn’t thought to hold John Howard responsible for conspiracy to commit mass murder.”

Howard argued the 2003 invasion did not play a major role in the rise of Isis which now holds large swathes of Syria and northern Iraq.

Wilkie said Howard should have made a “compelling humanitarian” case for dealing with Saddam Hussein in 2003 and told the voters the invasion was about Australia’s bilateral relationship with America, not WMDs.

When asked again if he was suggesting Howard was partly responsible for the rise of Isis, Wilkie responded “I’m not suggesting it, I’m stating it as fact”.

“If we had not gone to war 11.5 years ago, and destroyed that country and created this security vacuum, then the circumstances would not exist for Islamic State to have emerged and to grown strong and to conquer the land that it does. So yes, they are responsible.”

ABBOTT ADMITS MORAL GUILT BUT WON"T BE BLACKMAILED OR CAPITULATE

“I don’t believe any thinking Australian would want us to capitulate to moral blackmail”
What sort of PM is Tony Abbott?  to come out with a statement like that? It suggest some “moral turpitude” of which the government is guilty & has no intention of stopping even if blackmailed. In a lot of countries eg USA it’s breaking the law. Rolf Harris tried to refuse to capitulate to moral blackmail and he’s in jail.
Eric Abetz comes out yesterday and said yes there were some 11 trivial suicide and self harm attempts by some mothers behind razor wire. However they have been  medically attended to now. Both Abbott, Abetz and their right wing media  suggest that acts of self harm and attempted suicide are t minor strategical behaviours? Under the Mental Health Act these behaviours are far from trivial patients are generally transferred to ECU. The women have been behind razor wire for 12 months and are clinically depressed and in fear of their children’s poor  and deteriorating health. They apparently wanted their children adopted out of detention for their their safety and medical well-being. How hard is that for a mother? Mothers in desperation do desperate things. If Abbott or Abetz found the women in their households doing these minor things would it be a cup otea and an aspirin?
Where is our minister for No Information Scott Morrison? He must be grinding his teeth over the political ineptitude of his leader Tony Abbott and Senator Abetz. There are 120 spin doctors from two departments who are not doing their job, ask Andrew Bolt. No Morrison is in Sri Lanka being tortured by the news from home and the assurance from Sri Lankan police that those asylum seekers returned to face illegal departure charges will get ‘enhanced detention’. What on earth is this special form of detention? No information is available.
Abbott and Morrison also need Malcolm Fraser like a hole in the head who has pointed out that transferring 150 asylum seekers to a navy vessel in International waters and not Australian waters is tantamount to Piracy on the High Seas and another morally questionable act. But I guess Labour has to suffer  Bob Carr the media chasing Paris Hilton of their party who stood up to defy Canada, UK and UN by saying he thought Sri Lanka was a fine place to return asylum seekers. They have no record of human rights abuse. Serial rapists would love Carr on the parole board.
