To stop this trend, AIPAC – backed by millions from Republican donors – quickly became the top outside spender in Democratic primaries, dropping $26 million in 2022. This year, AIPAC plans to spend a cool $100 million, and the group’s top target is Bowman, whose primary is Tuesday, June 25.

“[I]n barely a month, an AIPAC-affiliated super PAC has spent $14.5 million — up to $17,000 an hour — on the race, filling television screens, stuffing mailboxes and clogging phone lines with caustic attacks,” the New York Times reported. “With days to go, the expenditures have already eclipsed what any interest group has ever spent on a single House race.”

Saturday evening witnessed the biggest Israeli demonstrations against the government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu since the outbreak of war on October 7, 2023, according to the Israeli press as summarized by Al Jazeera. Some 150,000 are said to have rallied in Tel Aviv alone. They demanded that the prime minister resign.

At least eight people have been killed in an Israeli air attack near an aid centre that was the main headquarters of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) in the Gaza Strip.

The air strike on Sunday hit the main gate of the organisation’s compound in Gaza City in the north of the enclave, injuring multiple Palestinians. The facility is used to distribute the little humanitarian aid that gets into Gaza.

  • the freeing of the remaining Israeli hostages held by Hamas (about 80 believed to still be alive, along with the remains of about 40 believed to be dead).

Pain gets worse for Gaza’s older people | The Electronic Intifada

Now 87, Samira has lost a great deal of weight during the current genocidal war on Gaza.

She has been repeatedly displaced and forced to live in a tent.

The situation is particularly gruesome for a woman of her age, who has diabetes.

One symptom of diabetes is a need to urinate frequently. Samira does not have a bathroom near her tent.

Using a crutch, she treks to a bathroom a considerable distance away, accompanied by her children. The sound of Israel’s violence is unavoidable on these treks.

Samira rented an apartment before the war began. Israel has now destroyed that apartment.

Pain is a constant presence in her life.

If Samira eats she feels pain. If she is hungry she feels pain.

Samira used to visit the doctor for regular checkups. As Gaza’s healthcare system has been directly attacked and placed under the worst imaginable strain, Samira has not been able to have proper medical assistance.

And so her pain gets worse and worse.

Without naming names, a joint statement by 93 countries in a show of support for the International Criminal Court is an unmistakable rebuke of the lawlessness of US and Israel.

Most criminals don’t dare threaten prosecutors. Only mafia dons do.

It’s the same with nations, most of which wouldn’t think of threatening the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), its legal staff and their families.

Only the most powerful and those with its full backing would intimidate the ICC with impunity. Though experts prefer to call it “international relations”, sadly the hierarchical order of nations resembles gangsterism.

Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant had better enjoy Israel in the summer, because their future ability to travel will be circumscribed when they are convicted of war crimes by the ICC.

In a search for efforts to change politicians’ attitudes towards Israeli policies, to cease the ‘Hamas, Hamas’ explanation, to foster humanity towards Palestinians, electric shock treatment may not be suitable, but could be worth a try.

If cruel and genocidal actions were classified as evidence of a political mood disorder requiring urgent treatment, electrical convulsions could surely be applied to Prime Minister Netanyahu and the right wing zealots in his Cabinet.

Closer to home, to discourage Opposition leaders from collusion with Israel’s determination to eliminate Palestinians, giving them a therapeutic jolt from a usually reliable source could be timely and justified.

At least, this imaginative electric intervention could reassure citizens experiencing the Gaza malaise that something was being done. In addition, my friend might not be permanently pissed off.

According to a report from Haaretz, Shin Bet Israeli intelligence officers arrested a doctor in Gaza on Nov. 11, 2023 and interrogated him for suspicion of holding Israeli hostages. Six days following the arrest of 53-year-old Dr. Iyad Rantisi, he was reported dead at the Shin Bet interrogation facility in Shakima Prison.

What has happened in Gaza since October 7 has exposed the brutal realities of occupation under which the Palestinian people have long suffered. Even before October 7, a record number of murders of Palestinians had already taken place on the West Bank in 2023, while settlers backed by the far right Israeli government were on a rampage of land theft. The Al Aqsa Mosque, third most sacred site in Islam, was being regularly invaded by settlers, aiming to demolish it to build a new temple. The world was ignoring all this. Now it cannot.

If there is any way out of this darkness, it is to shine the light.

Israel’s claims to being a “civilised democracy” and having “the most moral army in the world” have come under severe scrutiny by the international community since its disproportionate and dysregulated reaction to the horrific events of 7 October 2023. Whilst the flaming flags of “civilisation versus barbarism” are still being waved in Israel’s favour by some corners of the Albanese government, opposition parties and the media, such advocacy cannot be allowed to undermine Australia’s rule of law responsibility to protect its citizens from complicity in war crimes by foreign military forces, but also to show that the law applies to all, and that it is not antisemitic to state that to be the case.

The Jewish Council of Australia (JCA), appears to be a similar body in Australia. The JCA was only recently formed, and is said to be comprised of human rights experts. The JCA has expressed concern over another Australian Jewish organisation, in this case the AJA – the Australian Jewish Association – which the JCA sees as advancing an extremist position of superiority of Jews over and above Arab peoples.

Israel Threatens all-out War against Lebanon’s Hezbollah: Curve-ball for US Presidential Campaign?

Israel says that Hezbollah – the Lebanese political party and militant group – has pushed it close to an all-out war after the organisation posted a nine-minute video of drone footage, showing military and civilian areas in several locations including the Israeli port of Haifa. Israel has now publicly stated that it has approved military plans to move to a war footing against Hezbollah. Lebanon is on Israel’s border and the two countries have a long history of conflict and tension, which has been intensifying in recent months.

Israel’s escalation would be a significant blow to Biden ahead of the US presidential election. The Israel-Palestine conflict is already eroding Democrat support and Biden has repeatedly been accused from all sides of mishandling the situation. If further violence ramps up in the region, this will put even greater pressure on Biden, in ways he doesn’t need, just before the US goes to the ballot box.

After Gantz’s resignation, Netanyahu shut down the war cabinet, leaving only the far-right voices of the most right-wing government in Israel’s history to make the day-to-day decisions regarding the war.

Two of those extremists are Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, who will now have even more influence given their role in the security cabinet, which is expected to take on more prominence in war-time decisions.

With the absence of moderate voices within an emergency wartime government, the far right is seizing the chance to promote a second war.

None of that amounts to evidence of a successful, systemic infiltration by Hizb ut-Tahrir into Australian pro-Palestinian activism. All that journalist and documentary maker Nick McKenzie can demonstrate is that they have been there, hanging around.

Why did they not consult Australian Muslim community groups to find out about the years of tireless work undertaken counteracting the influence of groups like Hizb ut-Tahrir within their community?

McKenzie didn’t bother. He only spoke to counter-terrorism figures.

Because the aim of this coverage appears purely counter-terrorist — meaning to promote criminalisation.

Activist communities can and must police who we let man the barricades with us, but anyone who thinks this “investigation” is for us is a fool.

Australia must recognise Palestine to promote peace – Pearls and Irritations

If we don’t recognize Palestine we don’t recognize that Israel has killed and wounded over 120,000 people and has continued to illegally occupy seize and settle land disposed of the people living there. Basically, we are washing our hands of the matter like Pontius Pilate. Pilate washed his hands in front of the crowd before announcing, “I am innocent of this man’s blood; see to it yourselves.” The Jewish people shouted in response, “His blood be on us and our children.” It’s a passage that would be used for millennia to persecute the Jewish people.

In opposition, our prime minister and the Labor Party were fierce champions of Palestine and passionate voices for justice. I ask that we summon that spirit of old and do the same in power. Let historians write of us that we were on the right side of history, that we boldly reinforced international law, and that we were a shining beacon and voice for freedom.

It is time to recognise Palestine.
