Peter Dutton has the worldview of a Queensland cop. It’s in our interests to give him a go

<p>

An effective opposition leader, one who can reframe his party around mainstream values, is good for us all.

His forays into racial stereotyping –saying in 2018 that Melburnians were afraid to go out to dinner because of “African gang violence”, and his 2016 comments on the “mistake” of resettling Lebanese Muslim immigrants in the 1970s – were deeply disappointing.

Dutton is also notorious for boycotting the apology to the Stolen Generations (something he later said he regretted), which will put him, and his party, in an interesting position when they formulate a response to a referendum on the Voice to parliament. Dutton, as a former Queensland cop, has seen Aboriginal disadvantage up close, and perhaps he believed the apology was tokenistic.

But symbols matter in politics, and the Uluru Statement from the Heart is not virtue-signalling from a white-woke minority. Besides, what the right-wing of the Liberal party calls “woke” is becoming increasingly mainstream, especially when these issues are framed for what many of them are – a request for fairness.

Election 2022 results: Peter Dutton to be next Liberal Party leader after Scott Morrison steps down

Peter Dutton is poised to be the next leader of the Liberal Party.

Let’s hope the Booby wins the leadership prize because he’s sure to lead the LNP further into purgatory. With Dutton, as a leader, there’s no return. The thought of Australia becoming a more equitable place and returning to a “fair go” is now a possibility.

Will the Liberals bow to the Nationals who saved their ass in the regional wilderness? Who will lead them back to respectability? Dutton/Joyce are climate deniers and have an iceberg’s chance in hell of becoming historic heroes . Watch their members abandon ship, because it will only get worse, as they make the LNP spend years in PUNISHMENT PARK. I’m sure there’s an Abbott still dreaming.

Scott Morrison’s strategy to win outer suburban and regional seats from Labor and hang on to power failed in the 2022 election, with Peter Dutton emerging as the man most likely to be the next leader of the Liberal Party.

Patriarchy has had its day – » The Australian Independent Media Network

Men must realise that this implies no threat to them, no disenfranchisement nor emasculation. Empowering women will not disempower men but rather help to, as Robert Kennedy said in 1968; “tame the savageness of man and make gentle the life of this world.” In the civilised world, in these troubled times, the very survival of humankind depends upon collaboration, cooperation and mutual understanding. Patriarchy has had its day.

In summary, if Scott Morrison is a prick, how good a prick is he?

Donald Trump looked directly at the eclipse, ignoring his own government’s safety advice – ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Most of the millions of Americans who watched the total solar eclipse did so wearing safety glasses. US President Donald Trump did the opposite.

Incidentally, a press release sent out to journalists shortly before the eclipse took place explained that the Commander-in-Chief would be “watching the total eclipse from the Truman Balcony [of the White House] with the First Lady.” BuzzFeed’s Zahra Hirji noted that from Washington DC, only a partial eclipse would be seen – and shortly afterward, the White House press statement was updated

The Trump administration and its figurehead already have the ignominious reputation of being the most anti-scientific federal government in living memory, but this may be a new record. Honestly: how can anyone get a solar eclipse wrong – on multiple occasions?

Well, there’s a first time for everything, we suppose.
